Shifters are a secret, powerful race in the world. They live among us and have jobs, lives, and seem every bit as normal as anyone else. Renea was one of those shifters. She lived in California. She worked with her best friend in the cut throat fashion industry. She even liked to go out and party and have fun just like anyone else. Renea was doing well and enjoyed her day to day life. That is until she met Caleb. The man that she literally ran into. He is changing her whole world. Then there is Dante, her wolf man, he has her submitting to everything he is. Let’s not forget about Josh. He’s the one that she had thought had got away. Renea has had a tough life and that will only become more difficult as her past catches up with her in an unsuspected way.

Renea is a shifter in hiding. Even from herself, though she doesn't know it. Several chance meetings line up 3 different guys. All shifters. But on a date with one of them things start to go wrong. There's another shifter lurking in the wings. But what he wants isn't a mate.
Spoilers ahead. Ok, there's an interesting story buried in there. It's just buried in a fractured first person present tense. Homonyms are mixed up, tenses slip, some things get pluralism that didn't need it, and sentences contradict each other from one paragraph to the next. It's an editing mess. But the basis is decent. *She meets all 3 and constantly thinks she has to choose. Something they reinforce themselves. *She literally goes from thinking this to inviting all 3. *Two of the 3 think the same way until they suddenly decide sharing is caring. But they didn't inform her of that. *The next day she's mating her wolf and thinking that he has to establish himself as alpha or the multiple mate thing won't work. As if it's happened before. But if it had, why would she have to choose? *She runs away while knowing that she's being hunted. *She's a predator species that's known for camouflage, patience, and successful kills. She froze like a deer, ran away and huddled. What?? *She's being hunted for something she forgot about. And once they realize it they leave her alone to be kidnapped? A little contrived that. *All we know is that there's a special shifter breed. But how are they able to hide scents? Not even continuously, but just at the most opportune times. *What happens to their clothes? Nothing has been mentioned about magic. A 7' wolf isn't going to be able to wear what a human was, and the clothes survive perfectly when they shift back. But no one ever strips before changing. No mention of torn clothes. And they shift back fully clothed. Huh? *Her hair goes from shoulder length, to getting cut into a pixie style, then is suddenly in a ponytail? *She slut shames herself. Which really goes against her later thoughts that multiple mates aren't unknown. And I really just don't like slut shaming. It's a holdover thought from when women were property.
Like I said earlier, there's an interesting story line. What with the mystery shifters and all. But it needs a lot of editing, some lining up of conflicting ideas, and plot hole plugging. Stories run on 3 things: plot driven, character driven, or world building. The plot is ok but needs tweaking. The characters contradict each other and themselves. And we don't get to see how this would differs from ours other than that shifters exist.
I was super hoping to love this book after winning a giveaway from the author on TikTok, but I definitely didn't love it. The dialogue is super stiff, and especially in an "urban fantasy" setting, it's VERY noticeable. No one says "I will do that" or "It is the only way" in modern times - we use contractions. It's in the 3rd person POV but it feels really strange and I can't put my finger on why it feels wrong. The story is also full of holes... it's novella-sized, but rushes through a lot of things with little information. I wish I had more worldbuilding and lore. Definitely found my fair share of typos and grammatical errors as well (misspelled character names, tense changes, etc.) I'll read the others in the series because I'm in it now, and I'm not one to DNF anything, but I don't have much hope they're any better.
The writing is stiff and feels awkward at times. I don't know if it's the tense, the telling the reader as opposed to showing and describing, or the unnecessary play-by-play of things that don't add to the story but I just couldn't sink into it. Unfortunately did not finish.
