There are worse things haunting Cace Talbot than the ghosts inhabiting his beloved hometown. Hidden in Arizona’s Mule Mountains, Bisbee was small in a cozy way and just casually haunted with specters from its wild and sometimes dark past. Then, Laurence “Lorrie” Nixon returns after breaking Cace’s heart twenty-five years earlier and the town becomes too small and the memories a lot scarier.
Lorrie’s waited long enough and is determined to win Cace back no matter how hard he has to grovel. He’s already got his work cut out for him when a pair of copycat killings with echoes from Bisbee’s past cast suspicion Lorrie’s way. Lorrie turns to Cace and their band of childhood friends for help solving the brutal murders.
Cace doesn’t want to see his first love accused of a gruesome crime he didn’t commit but that doesn’t mean he’s letting Lorrie Nixon back into his life. At least, that’s what Cace says. His body on the other hand... Can Cace help find a killer without getting caught up in the memories and the pull of Lorrie’s lips?
Author of the popular Nannies of New York and Boys of Lake Cliff book series, K Sterling has self-published dozens of books. K. is known for fast-paced romantic thrillers and touching gay romcoms. There might be goosebumps and some gore but there’s always true love and lots of laughter.
Not much of a mystery, not much of paranormal and the second chance romance felt also a bit flat to me... firstly, why didn't Lorrie come back earlier? I didn't really understand it. And secondly, didn't Cace forgive him too easily? However, the group of friends was interesting and makes me curious enough to read more of this series.
A returned lover, a tired cafe owner, two dead bodies, more than a couple of ghosts and a host of fascinating locals come together in the town of Bisbee in this new series from K Sterling.
I took my time with this read, absorbing this richly woven world existing fictionally in the settings of a real town. There's a lot to take in, with a lot of history and world building being introduced in this book as part of a large-scale series set-up, however those familiar with this authors' style will understand appreciate the world building being created here and you just know this series is going to surprise and delight.
I like that there's romance but that's really only one of the stories being told here, the town is rich in history (real and imagined) and it's occupants are definitely on the quirky scale. I'm looking forward to getting to know more.
I love that it's a second chance romance at that between two guys in their mid-40s, and that whilst there is true angst and anger there for past mistakes, that there a maturity in these characters conversions, convictions and actions.
A great series starter with a brilliant cameo by a couple of familiar Lake Cliff favorites.
This book touts romance with murder and paranormal spookiness ... but there's not much featured of the ghosties (at least I got no tingly feelings) and the murders really only started quite a few chapters in and not a lot of investigating goes on by either the MCs (aside from Lorrie being suspected of being the killer himself for a brief moment). So if you're wanting a brisk plot with sleuthing action or paranormal battles ... this book is not for you. The deaths seemed incidental to the plot despite everyone decrying the tragedy of the victims and I note such random slayings seemed to have little to no impact on Bisbee's tourism traffic.
A lot more detail went into setting the 'romance' scene for the bachelors of Bisbee ... I admit I was floundering in chapter one by the sheer number of characters being paraded before me (and that's not counting all the townie secondary characters linked to said bachelors). A couple of potential suitors for our boys as well a guest spot by two of the author's MCs from another series (Detective Lane West and Dr. Aiden Sharp) added to the volume of names I had to keep track of.
I don't believe this series will be 'a goer' for me - 2.5 stars rounded up to 3.
Cute little mystery that takes place in a little town in Arizona. Sounded charming. Short read so not really all that fleshed out but long enough to work. Not sure I would have been so forgiving had someone left me for 25 years but who knows? Like it enough to find out what happens with our other bachelors.
A whodunit, a murder mystery, a ghost story and a second chance romance. This is a story about friendship, loss, pain. Every character here has lost, loved and hurt. Enjoyed this read, likable and believable characters, interesting plot with enough twists and turns and character development to keep it moving at a fast pace. Looking forward to book 2 in this new series.
When reading second chance romance, I hoped and needed grovelling, lashing and tremendous effort made to beg for forgiveness. In this, I feel like Lorrie had it easy because well, someone died and he was suspected of murder. The ending for the crime plot was a bit too abrupt and it would be so much better if it's more well developed. But then I am interested to follow the series to see how the story of the side characters.
I wanted to like it. I was like ooh! Group of friends! Ghosts! Suspense!
I shouldn't have done it.
I know I don't like 2nd chance romances. And this book had everything I hated about them.
I'm 30% into and it's allllllll about the angst. Choices were made people. Dude left. He didn't kill your dog or anything. Calm down. "It should have been HIM raising my son with me not my ex" gag. Then don't fucking have a kid with your ex. Get over your ego man.
"I thought he would have followed me once I became a famous artist" double gag. Again, GET. OVER. YOUR. EGO.
I might try Beau's book. I hope I don't miss any critical plots points cause I just can't with these two.
I do hope Baxter gets a book. I'm digging the Dick Tracey vibe from him a lot. Like a lot a lot. Who doesn't love a quirky character in a trench coat delving into cold cases *chef's kiss*
I love second chance romances but this one got off to a rocky start. Although there was plenty of delicious regret and angst, there were a few moments of interaction where Lorrie, the person who left, treated getting back together with Cace as a foregone conclusion. I wanted to see him put in some work and prove himself, not just say it was inevitable for them to get together again! It felt like he was just talking Cace into getting back together because he knew he could, not that he was actually trying to make up for anything. Thankfully it got a lot better in the second half of the book, and I got the moments I'd been waiting for.
The mystery wasn't that interesting and I didn't really see the point of Aiden. The book would have been made stronger by sticking to the already existing friend group (which I really liked) and developing those characters and bonds further. I couldn't understand why I was supposed to care about this random guy appearing from out of town that everyone instantly loved, but then I saw at the end that he was from another of the author's book series, so I guess it was mostly just fanservice.
Something I liked a surprising amount in this book was how understated the ghosts were. They were almost more set dressing than plot-related, which was actually kind of nice. It made the town a bit more memorable.
I think you are going to like the new town and cast Sterling has created. It's calm, sleepy Bisbee Arizona where ghosts haunt just about everything. The Bachelors' Club are a group of friend who have lived in Bisbee nearly all their lives (or close to the town). The kind of friendship that turns into family because it just feels right. This book center's around Case and Lorrie, 40-somethings that were inseparable through their 20's until Lorrie thought he wanted something else. He's back to fix his mistakes for good, but it wont be easy. Not only does he have to win back Case, but make amends with the brothers he hurt too. I know, I know... you've read this story. But did they have ghosts killing people? Yeah, didn't think so.
Sterling's new characters are everyday people, who own B&B's, coffee shops, and the local biker bar. They have kids, have daily routines, and know everyone that lives in the town. Just like you. But something is a little extra about them. They have lots of flaws, and not everything is perfectly fixed at the end of the book, but it's bandaged up enough that it will hold and allow everything to heal. I'm excited to see where these characters go, how they all come together, and what little mysterious this small town can create.
The beginning of Sterling’s newest series starts off with a bang. We are introduced to a new set of characters who tug on your heartstrings and make you want to wrap them in cotton.
Lorrie and Cace have had a hard past and Cace is forced to confront it when Lorrie comes back wanting his best friend and soulmate.
Cace is heart sore because of a previous relationship that went sour. He’s not sure if he can handle another heartbreak. But Lorrie knows they belong.
The way Sterling writes is lyrical. You’re sucked into the world of Bisbee and its quirky inhabitants. You want to know about the cast of side characters and how they relate to one another. You want to visit Bisbee and see the ghosts for yourself. I love how Lorrie works at forgiveness knowing that it won’t be easy. But he’s there for the long haul and he won’t give in. But the author will make you cry as the two men relive their lives through memories. Never fear, the lovers of Sterling’s heated moments, it’s there and oh so steamy. And for those wanting the mystery? She’s got you covered. I love how the real world murders is mixed in with the ghostly aura. I was curious to see how the case was solved and if the ghost did actually commit the crime.
If you love the Lake Cliff boys as much as I do, you're going to adore Bisbee Arizona and the cast of misfits in The Bachelors' Club. The old mining town has many secrets to unveil, some spooky inhabitants and a host of flawed characters in need of some loving - just my cup of tea!
In Book 1 we focus on the second chance romance of world weary cafe owner Cace and his first love Lorrie who returns to Bisbee to win him back. But Cace is not ready to forgive him just yet and there is the slight complication of two dead bodies and a ghostly prime suspect.
A bit of meddling from the other bachelors see the soul mates back on track and no other than Aiden and Lane make a cameo to help solve the murder mystery.
This is a deeply satisfying read and I can't wait to revisit Bisbee for Beau's story.
I really want to visit the town of Bisbee! I'd never heard of Bisbee before and after reading about it had to look it up on Google. What a cool town to have this new series take place in. I really enjoyed the main characters in this book and am looking forward to reading about the rest of supporting friends (hopefully) getting their happily ever afters in the following stories. I don't usually like books where the 2 main characters have broken up and they're coming back together, but I think it was handled well in this book. There was not instant forgiveness and both parties had to do their best to work with the circumstances and understand each other. I'm excited for the next book!
This was an absolutely great read, and I'm already hooked on this new series by Ms Sterling. After a devastating betrayal, Case is given a second chance to start over again. But does he want it? Also, as I was reading, I was thinking, does Lorrie really deserve it? Got to say that he really pissed me off, in this story, even though he was one of the MCs, and I've still not warmed up to him for what he did.
However, I love the fantastic friendship, some of the guys in the story have. They're so supportive of each other, and they really made the story, as far as I'm concerned. I also loved the supernatural/mystery element of the book. First class!
Great storyline and well developed realistic characters, relationships and ghosts - what else do you need to get hooked on a wonderful book. Can't wait for Moonlight and Madness. You need to give this lady's books a try. Recommend all of her work.
I LOVED it! I didn't think I would ever bond with a group like I did the Lake Cliff Boys but I think the Bisbee Bachelors might come in a close second! Great pace, relatable characters, mystery, intrigue, relationships, and ghosts make this a must read. It draws you in from the beginning and keeps you involved until the end....and makes you want more. I can't wait for the next installment. I'm looking forward to the next and the next and the next. Once again K. Sterling won my heart.
DNF at 15%. I promised myself to not DNF any books at beginning of this year but, sorry just no. I actually fell asleep when I hit that point of no return, and when I woke up I was just like aw hell no. Too much unnecessary angst & drama at the start, coupled with the dizzying array of indistinguishable characters and add in the writing style, it was just not for me.
I'm not a good reviewer . I don't like giving things away from anyone. But I will say I've been a fan of Miss Sterling from the get go ( my naughty girl). This is a great start of a new series. It's has everything you need. Its a true K Sterling story. All I can truly say is thank you to Miss Sterling for bringing me a breath of fresh air.
I love a good second chance romance. Although it breaks my heart that they spent years apart. I got a kick at the town being haunted. And we had a visit from Aiden and Lane!! They are my favorite Lake Cliff couple. Cace and Lorrie's story made my heart happy. Great story as usual with K. Sterling.
A different story from Ms. Sterling. Cace and Lorrie are the MCs. Second chance romance with them and a slow burner. We meet the best friends and the town of Bisbee. Hauntings, murder, and memories. Pretty good start to a new series. Can't wait for the next one!
Read for a group challenge. I blinked and missed why they'd broken up. I did like the son's support though. MC really wasn't worried he'd get stitched up for murder. I liked that the ghost thing was a seemingly regular occurrence. The other guy hung in there on the reconciliation but writing was on the wall from the get go. Will likely read the next one at some point.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Lorrie and Cace loved each other since their first steps and shared everything till things got to tough and all to real. Lorrie left to make a name for himself but lost the love of his life as a price. He is back now to win Cace back. Cace has a hard time forgiving Lorrie for all the years they lost and ex's he faced when Lorrie should have been by his side. Throw a few murders into the mix and our very much loved Dr. Aiden Sharp along with Lane and you have a really good story. My only problem was that K expected us to know who everyone was, what they looked like before being introduced to the surrounding characters. It made the story a little confusing.
Murder, mysteries and cameos, oh my. I thoroughly enjoyed my first visit to Bisbee, with it's kooky soul and roaming ghosts. Lorrie and Cace are soulmates, but Lorrie wrecked them and left town. Now he's back, and murder has followed him. There's a subtle humour to this book that had me smiling wryly at the clever way with words, and there's a particular phrase about time machines that I looooooved, it felt so right for the story. If you enjoyed The Boys of Lake Cliff, you'll definitely enjoy this lighter (but still kind of dark) start to a new series.
I received an ARC and have chosen to leave an honest review.
I just couldn't get into it. There were too many characters who were super similar all introduced at the same time but never explained. How hard would it have been to put "his son" in front of Owen, e.g. Everyone kept being mentioned like I should know them already, even though this is the first book in the series. And thus throughout the book I kept thinking: who IS this person? since so few of them were adequately introduced and had so little in the way of different personalities. This is especially frustrating in light of the extensive back stories shared about the characters- lots of deep info but little in the way of basics.
It had a good storyline, but I got confused a lot in the beginning from all the characters at the same time and trying to figure out who was who. Good story though.
K Sterling’s series The Bisbee Bachelors’ Club is a wonderful strange world to tumble into. For starters, it exists. Bisbee, Arizona is a real place. That knowledge alone sent me running to google as much as I could about a place that is as descriptively beautiful, narratively haunting, and just outright fascinating as you might imagine. The photographs made me want to take the next plane out to see it for myself.
With that rich, historic haunted town as both a backdrop and foundation, Sterling populates it with some great characters, of equal degrees of emotional depth and haunted backstories. The Bisbee Batchelor s Club. Stories written about the single men of the queer friendly, hippy artsy former copper mining town.
And it starts with one of the most emotionally haunted man of them all, Cace Talbot. Surrounded by his son and close friends, it’s still not enough to keep the pain away from losing his soul mate, the man who left him and the town to pursue his art. Cace is still struggling and Sterling make him easy to understand and relate to.
Especially when the man he’s been trying to forget returns to town. That’s Laurence “Lorrie” Nixon, who’s come back after 25 years away.
There’s a realistic look at the years these men have lost. It’s a true bittersweet element that runs through their reunion and reconnecting relationship. Discussions over what might have been, the children they should have had, the moments lost they will never get, it’s so sad in those moments when they are sharing memories , painful, and heartbreaking. It’s twenty-five years of love and loss and longing that they know could have been theirs but wasn’t. This aspect is there even as they decide to go forward because it’s ingrained into who they’ve become.
I love that Sterling is able to build this not only into the storyline but into their characters too. It makes the depth of their bond even more believable.
The murder mystery that runs along side the romance rebuilding is good but strangely just a secondary storyline. It never feels like a main theme. I liked how it plays out, but wanted a little bit more details and depth to the investigation until the reveal. It was all a bit pat for me.
But the relationship between Lorrie and Cace? That was emotional and heartfelt. And adding in all the found family members around them was perfect.
I’m onto the next. I’m absolutely sold on the town and these characters. And I’m a fan of the author, so I’m thrilled to gave a new series to binge.
I’m happily recommending Haunted Hearts (The Bisbee Bachelors’ Club Book 1) by K Sterling. Enjoy!
Haunted Hearts by K Sterling is the first book in the "Bisbee Bachelors' Club" series of...m/m romance, I reckon. Main characters are Cace Talbot and Laurence "Lorrie" Nixon.
Lorrie left the small town of Bisbee AZ 25 years ago to pursue his career as an artist. He also left Cace behind, but he never stopped missing or loving him. Cace was devastated when Lorrie left, but he built a life for himself, marrying and having a son via surrogacy. Divorced now, and older and wiser, Cace still isn't prepared for the rush of emotions that overtake him when Lorrie returns to town, especially when Lorrie makes it clear that he wants Cace back in his life and will do anything to get them back to good. Afraid of getting his heart broken again, Cace vows to keep Lorrie at arm's length, but it's not easy when all of their childhood friends, as well as Cace's son Owen, seem thrilled at the prospect of Cace and Lorrie getting back together. Things come to a head when there are two murders in town and Lorrie finds himself under scrutiny. Cace and Lorrie must work together to solve the crimes, which brings home just how much they have to lose if they lose one another again.
This was a lovely story, which focused more on the rekindling of Cace and Lorrie's relationship than on the murders and the subsequent investigation. My heart hurt for them both, even though I was firmly on Team Cace--he's not the one who walked away from what they had, although it became clear that they both suffered while apart. The investigation was interesting in that half the town blamed one of the resident ghosts and the police didn't seem too inclined to look much further. I enjoyed the paranormal elements and the raw emotions of both Cace and Lorrie, and the sexy scenes were very sexy. The story was far from perfect, but I loved it. Four stars.
The love of Cace Talbot's life left Bisbee twenty-five years ago and now he is back. Laurence "Lorrie" Nixon is now a famous artist. But, he comes home to Bisbee because he believes now is the time to win back Cace's heart. Both Cace and Lorrie are damaged by what happened in the past. Cace went on to marry, have a son and divorce. Lorrie can't help but wish that he was a father along with Cace. There is a murder and it looks like Lorrie is going to be blamed. That's when the Bisbee bachelors come to the rescue. Most of these men have been friends since childhood and Baxter likes to play PI. The case is solved and Cace and Lorrie are working things out. This book includes a strange community that is very loveable as well as characters you want to learn more about.
I started reading this because it's spooky season and I love paranormal/supernatural books. This turned out to be more of a cosy mystery than a spooky read but I'm not mad about it!
Case and his son Owen really rugged at my heartstrings from the start. I fell in love with both of them and got invested in their story from the start. Lorrie on the other hand took longer to grow in me. I wasn't a fan of his attitude regarding his past, butcher eventually won me over!
I really loved a lot of the side characters too so I'm definitely gonna read the rest of the series!
