Violent Kingdom #2

Vengeful Queen

Rate this book
USA Today bestselling author Lili St. Germain continues the story of a damaged Capulet princess, as she seeks the truth about her Montague captor in a world full of secrets and lies.
*****

The CALIFORNIA BLOOD series, set in the criminal underbelly of San Francisco, follows two warring families who are ruled by blood, power and twisted desire.

Burn in Your Blood is the second book in the series.

Sometimes, we lose ourselves in the devastation of love. But sometimes, we find ourselves there, too.

ROME

Avery Capulet. The forbidden fruit. The apple of her Daddy’s eye. The newly-minted Queen of California’s criminal underworld. And now, the missing girl nobody can find.

I know where she is, though. Kneeling before me, tears spilling from her eyes as the last bit of her dignity bleeds from her.
I don’t want the pound of flesh that the girl who betrayed me delivers, but I don’t have a choice.

Avery Capulet. Moaning underneath me, as pain merges with pleasure, skin to skin as we do what we can to survive. In the dark, in the wild, we’re like animals. I try not to love her. I try so damn hard.

But the war waged inside my heart was won a long time ago, by a girl who should have known better than to trust a man like me.

AVERY

Rome Montague. The boy from my past. The man in my nightmares. The dark, secret lover who makes me feel things I never knew I could feel.Love and pain can both drive you insane. I fight, and I fight, until all I can do is surrender. Be pulled under. Submit, until I barely recognize myself.

Rome Montague. When he looks at me, I forget the lies that destroyed our past. When he makes me come apart underneath his touch, I forget where we are, and that a faceless enemy pulls our strings like marionettes.

The outside world beckons bright, teasing us with mirages of safety and respite.

But the light of day is a cruel lie.

Because once we find a way out of the dark, we both realize that our nightmare has only just begun.

5 tortured souls stars
a dark retelling of Romeo & Juliet

tropes: rival families, forced proximity, revenge, suspense
trigger warnings: kidnapping,non-con, mental and physical abuse
reading order:
Vicious Prince (book 1)
Vengeful Queen (book 2)
Violent Reign (book 3)
suspense: high focus
mystery: high focus
characters' development:high focus
characters' chemistry: moderate focus
steamy scenes:moderate focus

I'm utterly speechless. Starting this book I didn't think it could get this dark, this twisted, this intense. I've read quite a few forced proximity books but they were all chill compared to this one. There were scenes where I just had to take a break from reading because I couldn't stomach what was happening. This book is low-key Jigsaw meets Romeo & Juliet.
Avery (the h) at first sounded like just another average heroine but after seeing what she went through and her undying power I'm stunned by her character. Rome was equally interesting and so powerful to me. You first see him as this rich boy turned tattooed street drug dealer and you begin to judge him but as the book and storyline progress, we get more in-depth into his character. This love between these two was stained as a result of 10 years of pain and distance but it never grew weaker. What they went through bonded them together with the most terrifying yet beautiful twist the author could provide
the plot: Avery Capulet put Rome Montague in prison a decade ago when she stood in court and lied against him in favor of her family who had taken away the Montagues' fortune as a result of their rivalry. Now Avery must agree to an arranged marriage her father organized for her to continue the Capulet's dynasty while Rome spends his time selling drugs as an ex-con. The events that follow next force Avery and Rome to connect again in the most twisted way. but the real question is, can they survive together?

Avery Capulet and Rome Montague’s twisted mafia tale finally continues in book two of the Violent Kingdom series. There’s a recap in the beginning as it’s been a while since book one was released to help you get right into this twisted dark story. Taken on her 20th birthday by the XO killer. Locked away with Rome, her father’s enemies son. Will Rome and Avery be able to survive the torture and madness their captor creates? Will they ever be found? This is a extremely violent and very dark, captive story. There are major triggers including rape so be warned. As much as love dark romances there were some scenes where even I was like O.M.G! That’s all I’m going to say as to not spoil anything but, What A Wild Ride! If you love twisted, dark suspense novels you need this book! This ends in another jaw dropping cliffhanger as there is one more book to come. Told in dual POV.

Angst Rating : 6/10

Heat Rating : 8/10

They both have a past full of lies and betrayals but now is the time to save each other and not rehash their past and feelings. Their enemy is not done with them yet. The tasks become more horrifying and now they have no choice but to do whatever they can to save each other.

They have a lot of things they need to do starting with vengeance and finding out who is that person behind the mask who hurt them beyond measure, that is when they both escape. It is now a battle of death and escaping to finally overcome their fears and take their revenge.

Overall Opinion :
After that cliffhanger of the first book , I was honestly excited to see that the second book was coming soon!! I can't’ wait for the final read and can’t even tell you guys how amazing this installment was! The ending of this book was also another huge cliffhanger that had my jaw on the floor and I still haven;t recovered from it, I need the last part asap because my brain is going crazy over this one simply marvelous!

This trilogy has a lof of triggers in it that a person needs to keep in mind , it has a detailed rape scene and lots of knife cutting. description

I read the first book Vicious Prince two and half years ago, so I didn't remember a lot of what happened between Rome and Avery in that book. So I made sure to check the highlights and scroll through the book to refresh my memories. I was excited to get back to the world Lili created for the Violent Kingdom series. Lili is one of my favorite dark romance authors so I was certain that she would deliver a great book. Vengeful Queen picks up where we left off and Rome and Avery are in the hands of a psychotic killer. It was very difficult to see how this monster broke the two main characters down. A lot of horrific and evil things were done, and it really broke my heart. While Rome and Avery are enemies, you see them grow closer together in captivity. They try to motivate each other to hold on and not give up.

"Everything about you turns me on. But it doesn't just turn me on, Avery. It sets me on fire."

First of all, I loved that the author took her time in this book. If I remember correctly I found the previous book a bit too fast-paced and wished it was longer. She totally delivered in this book and set the mood for each part of the book. I was fully hooked on the story and intrigued to see what would happen next. There were a couple of twists, which I am used to from this author. I had my theories about certain things but I have to say that Lili did an incredible job of throwing me off the scent. There is a lot going on but it never felt too much. I loved seeing the characters grow. Especially Avery went through a transformation and I admired her determination. This book was dark, sexy, romantic, and suspenseful. I saw a couple of things coming but the ending definitely has me super excited to get my hands on the last book in this series.

My little dark loving heart almost burst with excitement when I found out that this book was on its way and let me tell you, it did not disappoint. I don’t have any triggers and I welcome being lead out of my comfort zone and I have to say, Vengeful Queen really pushed the boundaries with it’s extremely violent and very dark plot.

The opening chapter stole my breath with its shocking and brutal scenes and similar ones throughout the book are equally, if not more, disturbing and difficult to read. Those scenarios are decidedly challenging, the depravity difficult to comprehend, but for someone who likes the darkness, I found them fascinating, wondering just how far they’d go. Those of you who also embrace a dark read will understand when I say it got my adrenaline going and my heart pumping and I absolutely loved it.

I thanked goodness that Avery and Rome had the support of each other for the most part, as I was so far past hoping for the best and in fact began despairing along with these characters, that they would ever find their way out of captivity. A fantastic plot, with twists and turns and bombshell revelations I didn’t see coming, had me on the edge of my seat. A certain turn of events towards the end of the book now has me desperately chomping at the bit for the concluding part to Avery and Rome’s epic tale. And THAT ending? Just brilliant!

The first book was good and I love some of this authors other stuff. However, the wait for this follow up has been ridiculous and it was not worth it.

Maybe because I’ve been reading YA that last couple weeks I expected too much on this one. But I am quite disappointed. Avery is a spoiled moron, and Rome’s kind of being led by his dick in this second book.

It starts where we left them, imprisoned by the XO killer. Their imprisonment and the torture they’ve both endured for the last six weeks has bonded them and Rome is back in love. In love with the girl who lied and sent him to prison. And it’s set up so that Rome looks like he was the kidnapper, this isn’t a spoiler, it’s kind of known pretty early on in the story. So when they finally get rescued, guess who goes to jail for it. Now, Avery has been through Hell and so she spends some time in the hospital. All that time, she knows Rome’s been arrested and is in jail, and all she does is tell the detectives they’re wrong. She doesn’t use her considerable clout to get him released, she doesn’t even help hire a lawyer for him! Then she’s released and she’s going to church, and getting smoothies...and poor dumbass Rome is sitting in jail. I was kind of done at this point.

But no, Avery finally greases the wheels and gets him bail and released. Then she pulls several ridiculous stunts, ending in her own arrest. Granted times are hard for her not knowing who really is responsible for her kidnapping, and they get worse when two people closest to her get arrested for it also.

The writing was kind of juvenile and Avery was a blasted moron, and her inner musings sounded like a thirteen year old girl. I’m out on this...

⭐️ 4 "Dark, Dark, Dark" Stars ⭐️
It's been a long time coming, but Lili St. Germain is finally back with the second book in the Violent Kingdom Trilogy, Vengeful Queen! I remember reading Verona Blood, now titled Vicious Prince, a couple years back and adoring this dark Romeo and Juliet retelling. The ending was jaw-dropping and the wait was killing me, needless to say I dived into this sequel as soon as it hit my kindle. Once again, this novel is bursting with depravity, violence, darkness, despair, but also lighter feelings like hope and love!

Vengeful Queen starts strong and fast right where the previous book ended, with Avery and Rome in captivity at the hands of a cruel and vicious kidnapper. In this atrocious environmment, they both try to stay strong, but it's not always an easy feature. Doubts and misery plague them! Their only light into this gloomy world is each other. I enjoyed how they slowly rebuild their broken relationship throughout this ordeal.

All read long I was hooked on everything happening. The plot line with all the twists and turns had me intrigued and suspicious of every single character. I just wanted to know who was behind the kidnapping and discover what the future holds for Avery and Rome. Overall, this book was a page-turner! I can't wait for the final installment as it ended on another cliffhanger!

I really hate cliffhangers! I wish that writers finish all their series before publishing their stories. All the joy is lost if you have to wait for months and sometimes years to get the sequel of your stories.

I've got this book as an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Truth be said. I couldn't really remember what the first book was about, because I have read it a long while ago and also in between read so many books.
I did remember, that there was kidnapping, torture, pain and rape.

Now when I started reading this book it kind of started whereI thought it would, but we also got a tiny bit of recapitulation of the first book which helped tremendously. (Usually I hate it but in this one, I needed it).

I can pleasantly say that this book had a lot of thoughts in it. And the first thing that I truly liked was that the main characters were held in kind of like a prison, not for a few days but actually for six weeks, which usually we get rarely. Mostly the main characters or character stay in this for like a week and then they are scarred for the rest of their lives, you know. Like it kind of feels like the authors don't really want to come up with a lot of ideas as to what can happen in "Hell", but I can pleasantly say that Lili St. Germain thought of this exceptionally well. Usually I don't think I would be too interested to read characters stuck in "Hell" for so long, but she made it interesting and painful and you could truly sympathise with the characters.

There were parts in the book that I liked more than the others, but they were also parts which I didn't really like, but that depends on each and everyone of us because, you know, we are different.

The storyline of this book is exceptional and it is truly worth waiting such a long time for the second book. I can honestly say that Lili St. Germain had this plot in her head for so long and played with it, so that the way she wrote it was amazing.

I don't know if I mentioned this in my previous review, but I loved how this was an interpretation of Romeo and Juliet in a new scary light. At least I think it was or is. Truthfully I love this version so much more. It's more our kind of century or like probably more like my style, but either way haven't read the original book.

Along the way we find out or we think we found out, who that is or why and by the end of the book I was shocked to the core. I was left speechless and I am just praying that it all goes out right, like I truly hope that this book has a happy ending, because otherwise I think I will come up to Ms./Mrs. Lily and just scream my nerves at her and demand a REWRITE!!!

At the end of my review, I would like to say that this book is really darker and if you're not up to it, you should read it. It gets darker than the previous one and you have to prepare yourself for it. Other than that you have to read it! The wait was 100% worth it and I'm recommending this book to everyone who can handle the dark side!

Also the ENDING??? What the actual EFF???? LIKE HOW?????

HELLO DARKNESS!! I absolutely devoured this book, after the long wait it was definitely worth it, so don't be put off. Luckily Vengeful Queen picks straight up in a way that refreshes your memory. It dives straight back into the terrifying situation the characters found themselves in at the end of book 1, as if anyone could forget that bombshell.

Their story doesn't get any easier as Avery and Rome drag us further into their twisted violent world. It's messed up, dark and delicious mind fuxkery at its very best. This Author knows how to deliver the shock factor in the most disturbing way, she never holds back and my Dark side loves and thanks her for it.

There were a few surprises I didn't expect in this story which were awesome, I was giddy with excitement. This book had all the craziness, the violence and the depravity I look for in a suspenseful dark read. It ticked all my boxes and I loved every minute.

I have to say I have my eye on Father Mateo, he is one very interesting priest that's for sure. I need more of him.
I can't wait for Violent Reign because in true Lili style she has left us with another mind blowing cliffhanger that will leave your head spinning, your heart pumping and your butt clenching.👏

This was so much more in depth compared to Vicious Prince. A lot more of character/story development as well as the continuing view points from Avery, Rome and Elliott. The ending I totally wasn't expecting and LUCKILY we have about a month till the finale Violent Reign comes out! I can't wait to see how this all ends!

I received this book at my request and have voluntarily left this unbiased review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Vengeful Queen was an emotional roller coaster of a read. It was rage inducing. There were so many characters I wanted to enact violence upon but even through all of that my eyes stayed glued to the page. I can’t wait to read the conclusion. I recommend this book. It’s dark and messed up but I enjoyed it.

Lili St. Germain is back and dare I say she is BETTER THAN EVER! Vengeful Queen was 3 years in the making and I am here to say that it does not disappoint. Holy moly I was swept away almost immediately as we pick up right where we left off in Vicious Prince as Avery Capulet's world is turned on its proverbial head and nothing can ever be the same again.

St. Germain does not hold back as we witness the brutality that is thrust upon Avery and the boy she once loved as their lives endure endless days and weeks of a harsh brutality. Rome Montague is the surprise of the story as he wages his own battle for survival and yet will stop at nothing to make sure Avery stays alert and strong. There is so much at play as the heir apparent to the Capulet business and fortune rides on Avery's very being and whether or not she is strong enough to stave off those who want to destroy not only her body but her spirit as well.

The spark of life that is the realization that no matter what had transpired in the past between Rome and Avery, that there is still that love that no amount of darkness can extinguish is its own miracle of sorts. Their minds may be deprived of awareness of what is around them during their uneasy and unsettled time together, but their hearts knew better. Despite all the anguish and despair, Rome and Avery are forever tethered and that glorious realization only makes them stronger.

I loved watching as Avery became the Capulet her ailing father would be wildly proud of. There is clearly a new version of her after that fateful 25th birthday party and my hope is that this Avery can manage to find the balance she needs to live the life she wants. Of course, there are plenty of evil detours in the forms of the many well-written and detestable characters and I couldn't wait to turn the page to see what sort of mayhem they would thrust upon her next. Sure it was hard to watch and my stomach was in knots throughout. But like that car wreck on the side of the road, there is that insatiable need to look and once you do, you're not turning away.

This story is intense and complicated and extremely addictive. Loyalty is put to the test and surprises abound as seemingly perfectly executed plans of revenge and control unravel in the most unexpected of ways. I am in awe of St. Germain's ability to tie all the loose ends together in a way that the reader can easily follow along when there are a multitude of moving parts.

We are far from over as book 3, Violent Reign, will be here in February. I can only imagine what St. Germain has in store for us as the conclusion to this trilogy will undoubtedly throw me for a loop, albeit a truly enjoyable one, once more.

If I could give Vengeful Queen 10 stars, I would. My mind is still spinning and for this reader, there is nothing better. A must read, this book is twisted perfection!

Lili kept readers on the edge of their seats with the first book and Vengeful Queen honestly blew me away.

Reading Vengeful Queen is not for the weak of heart as the scenes are GRAPHIC! There is no sweet romance here but two people hopelessly clinging to each other and their last bits of sanity.

There is a pervasive stench of desperation emanating from the two main characters that hit you right in your gut and leave you in actual torment. I was right there agonizing with them as their bodies and minds whittled away until death looked like a reward. Avery and Rome's story is twisted and dark and made me tear up at times.

I favored this over the previous book as there is more insight into Avery and moreso Rome who we only previously got snippets about. I would say I was slightly disappointed in Avery as she seemed to be a glorified doormat at the beginning but her progression, later on, warmed me to her.

When writing about such dark matters (rape, abuse, kidnap etc) there is a mental toll that I felt could have been explored more. Such anguish wears down the mind, body, and soul and I wanted more on these areas.

The ending had me SHOOK! I cannot wait for the next book to see how it all plays out.

This book was a torpedo launched high-speed into life as I know it. Once I started, I could barely wrench myself away from it to do ordinary things.. you know? Like eat and sleep.
Picking up exactly where Vicious Prince left off, we are thrust immediately back into the darkened basement world of horrors and torture. Escape seems impossible, and death feels imminent. But in the midst of so much hopelessness and devastation, a lost flicker of love manages to spark, and a second chance is offered, even if its time seems limited.
There’s so much in this book, so much that I can’t say because nobody likes spoilers, but more than that. So much I can’t say because you just have to experience it. It seems wrong to talk about character growth when you’re also discussing kidnapping, forced imprisonment, and all the ugly things that go along with that, but it’s true nonetheless. Avery especially, goes through such monumental growth through her ordeal. In less of a cocoon-butterfly sense, more of a blade forged in fire way. The girl born with a silver spoon in her mouth, who spent her first 25 years raging about the decisions made on her behalf, yet allowing them anyway, grows a spine of steel. And the bond that she and Rome develop is the stuff of romantic fantasies (save the torture).
It was always going to end on a cliffhanger, and it didn’t disappoint. But the burning question on my brain now isn’t who, how, or why. It’s simply: WHAT NEXT?!

I have been waiting for a really really long time for this book to come out.
And honestly, it was worth the entire wait!
This has everything you are looking for in a dark romance, there is sex, mystery, murder.
The author did a great a good job in creating a good plot and characters to go with it.
It's super dark and gritty, so if you have ANY sort of triggers, STAY AWAY.
The relationship between Rome and Avery was one of a kind, they went through HELL together, and the only person that could understand what they went through was each other.
Whatever happened in the past between them became inmaterial in the face of danger.

I highly highly HIGHLY recommend you to take a chance in reading this series.
The plot and characters are just A++++

This 2nd instalment of the series definitely tops the first book, and I can't wait for the 3rd book to come out, hopefully i don't have to wait too long.
It's not a standalone, so you will have to read the first book before reading VENGEFUL QUEEN.

Side Note: This book DOES ends in a cliffhanger, and it WILL leave you questioning everything you thought you knew

Vengeful Queen - Book #2 - Violent Kingdom Series - Lili St Germain
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The long awaited return of Lili St Germain with Book 2 in the Violent Kingdom series - Vengeful Queen was something I’ve eagerly anticipated and I definitely was not disappointed.

With a recapping of the terrible events from the previous book - Vicious Prince, Avery Capulet and Rome Montague are then thrust into a dark and putrid situation, one they appear to have no control over. Their lives and their fragile minds manipulated by serial killer, they’re trading a fine line between life and death. So much happens, so much grief, sorrow and terrible secrets revealed.

Every character in this series had such amazing depth and the story is meticulously delivered to accentuate every heart stopping moment.

Lili St Germain has reinvigorated my love of this genre and I’m now eager to read the third book in the series. I couldn’t get enough of this book. It was sublime. Every word! Every scenario, Lili St Germain knows how to thrill and chill her readers.

I had been expecting this book for years, and then, I just chickened out, fearing I wouldn't like it as much as I thought I would. Expectations come at a price, you know.
I should have known better! Lili St Germain is one of my favorite authors, and ince again, she didn't disappoint. She delivered a gruesome and thrilling second installment that had me bitting my nails all along. I didn't know what to expect. The mystery was brilliantly executed.
Rome and Avery's raw and beautiful bond completely balanced the gory details and the heartbreaking scenes.
Vengeful Queen left me craving for more, I'm glad the conclusion to this explosive series (so far) is already available!

Wow....definitely worth the wait!!! If you have triggers this book probably isn’t for you because dayuuuum that was intense. Rome and Avery end up in the XO killers clutches and he has help. This is a twisted story from start to finish that I couldn’t put down. Rome is a criminal through no fault of his own and Avery was the one who got him sent to jail. He becomes her lifeline in that prison. The twists and turns this book took are crazy and I didn’t expect the ending even though there were clues. Can’t wait to read the next book and see what happens. So much is left to chance. Will the XO killer take both of them again? Will Rome be able to save Avery? So many questions I need answers to! Definitely a must read for anyone who likes twisted love stories. Fantastic writing Lili can’t wait for the next book!!!

‘I might be too weak to walk, too injured to escape, but there is one thing my blood still sings for in those endless moments. Vengeance.’

Oh heck, oh holy heck. Shit. I didn’t, I couldn’t. Oh man. Oh Jesus. That’s about all you are gonna get from me right now. I’ll be over here waiting for the final book to come out because damn. I can’t even English right now.

So bloody emotional. I cried, I laughed, I smiled and I’m now broken and shook asf. Lili imma need you to put me back together please and thank you.
