Secrets of Magic is a flavor-filled book that finally gave me a neat mental picture of how to justify spell slots. (The magic-user's head is equated to a palace with only room for a certain number of "floors," which represent the various spell levels and associated slots. As the magician's skill increases, they gain access to different "floors.") It's good stuff, and while I tend to play martial characters more than magical ones when it comes to tabletop RPGs, Secrets of Magic definitely makes me want to try my hand at the new version of the magus, which is one of two classes offered here alongside the summoner, AKA Rydia from Final Fantasy IV.

Mechanically, this book presents two great ways of allowing "gish" characters without displacing either martial or spellcasting classes. But moreover, I was surprised by how good the writing about different types of magic and how they are integrated into the world and history of Golarion ended up being. Great for GMs or for players!

I am afraid I can't give this a flat 5-star rating.

We enjoyed the content, new classes and artefacts and spells, the page layout is a matter of taste and at times too cluttered for me, and the format is the standard 2e formatting that we've grown very fond of.

But there are here and there are instances of me wishing Paizo had spent a sentence or two more for the sake of clarity. Like for example Spellhearts. The two of us had to do some brain-racking and at the end guess whether you need one action for the spell and the attack or if there were any limits besides the three actions per round.
