Rate this book

This introduction to the life and work of The (other) Donald is warm and cosy without being shallow or patronising. Some pretty deep concepts are teased out, certainly enough for the lay reader, and difficult biographical points are given an airing. The tea-sipping conceit might not be to everyone's taste but I enjoyed it and the drawings, building on Alison Bechdel's "Are You My Mother" (which is sitting in front of me waiting to be read as soon as I finish this review) are perfect.

I read this book for fun and it was fun. I really got drawn into the format and did indeed feel that I was reading the report of a friendly chat between Winnicott and someone who loved his work. It felt very authentic, but unfortunately it is not really a substitute for trying to get to grips with his writings. The book gave me a really good sense of Winnicott as a person but did not directly add to my understanding of his writings. But it was fun!

Disclaimers first: I'm by no means more than an interested reader in psychoanalysis, and I didn't know much about Winnicott's life or ideas before starting this book. Oh, and I, in general, do not enjoy biography books :D

I felt the book gives a good balance of personal details of Winnicott's life and theories in psychoanalysis. At times, the text goes into tiny details of matters that do not matter very much to me per se, but I just adapted my reading speed for those parts and overall it was an enjoyable read. The parts that exclusively deal with his theories I think were super clear and well explained and I found it very rewarding.

I personally felt that this book helped me connect some otherwise abstract intangible swarm of words to my own experience, and it also revealed new aspects of the therapist-client relationship to me. Oh and to be fair, I did enjoy some of the more aestethical aspects too like the tea or London street references :) I would suggest this to anyone who is keen about psychoanalysis.

Did not sparkle as much as his coffee w freud, but an equally well researched and playful book by the scholar most able to do this. As he notes in the epilogue:

“with the kind permission of the Winnicott Trust, I have had the great privilege of studying his deeply extensive correspondence, consisting of literally tens of thousands of pages of print. In fact, I may be the only person obsessional enough to have read through the entire collection of Winnicot's unpublished letters - housed in archival repositories on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean - not once, but twice, and sometimes even thrice. In preparation for my 1996 biography, I had interviewed approximately tro hundred people who knew Winnicott personally; subsequently, since publication, I have interviewed a further seven hundred or more.”

I love obsessional neurotics.

What a beautiful tribute to a man who has done so much for thinking about children and psychology, and so much more. Speaking of obsessional neurotics—Alison Bechdel (who illustrates the book) wrote (in are you my mother) of her desire to have winnicott as a mom. I totally get that. And I think, in some ways, we both have, through the legacy of his teaching and theory.

I have heard about him and some of his idea but I did underestand more about his theories and also the process of psychology establishments and chalenges.the writer has worked hard and could showed us different aspects of winnicott, the question in my mind is ,usually the people search and investigate and look for about what they missed or deprived in their life,so as book showed ,winnicot had a rich and good childhood physically and emotionally life ,so why he aimed children dieases and psychology?

Like Kahr's 'Coffee With Freud', a highly enjoyable overview of a great thinker's life and work. This is better though, since it doesn't finish abruptly and it has a sense of completion about it. Hugely recommended for budding psychotherapists or anyone thinking about working in the mental health arena-more than 'good enough'!

Very interesting for the context of the time. Sad that the passage with his ideas is rather short and comes just in the middle of the book. Besides, again, very interesting. The format is very readable which is pleasant compared to the rather challenging style of Winnicott.

I found insightful the perspective on the early infant stage / birth period and alike.

Reading this book made me feel like I know Winnicott. This is despite the fact that the author never met Winnicott himself. This is quite an accomplishment for Brett Kahr, and like him I wish I could have met Winnicott in real life.
