(Game Series # 6) Assia dela Serna's dream was to become a lawyer. Ever since she was little, she had dreamt of becoming one... But from a young age, she knew that her family wasn't financially capable of sending her to law school. Kaya naman bata pa lang siya, sinigurado niya na magiging maayos lahat ng grado niya. She made sure that everything in her transcript was perfect. She needed to get a full ride scholarship to the best law school in the country, St. Claire's Academy College of Law...
But things do not always go according to plan.
She didn't make it to SCA, but she made it to Brent. It wasn't the best school, but she met a lot of good people. She was happy. She felt like everything was going according to plan. She's gonna be a lawyer. She's gonna go home to her province and help the people in her town. Everything was great... until her last year in law school.
Defy The Game, this is the second time reading this book. I honestly appreciated the message of the book. And I'm happy with how it was resolved. Both MC, Assia and Vito, were so cute together and heartwarming to read. They were not really a couple the entire journey until the end, though. The only reason I wasn't able to give this a 4 stars atleast, because the first half of the story were not engaging. The narration was dry so I felt bored and almost put this to dnf. But the second half went ok, it became interesting enough to continue, though I find it funny how Assia was able to take the exam while Vito was in jail, then when the end was near it became a bit dragging. I didn't even finish reading the epilogue. So this is an ok book, I appreciated but nothing special or unique.
Finally, another Game series novel! The first 3 books are all included in my-all-time-favorite shelf, so even though I have a love-hate relationship with this series, I still can't deny the fact that I'm still excited whenever a new installment was released.
Defy the Game is the sixth book of the series (I skipped the fifth one because I'm not sure if I will be ready for it lol) and it revolves around Assia dela Serna, a strong willed woman whose sole purpose is to become a lawyer despite the challenges in her life.
I think one of the strongest features of Defy The Game is the issues tackled in the novel which are very timely and something that, in my opinion, everyone should know about. Trigger warnings for sexual abuse, rape, and violence against men, I like how these sensitive topics were all discussed. I also love the fact that this novel showed a very dark side of our justice system and the unfairness of society — how the public sees you when you were indicted, even if you were proven innocent. I wish these scenarios are all just purely fictional but the everyday news proves otherwise, which makes it even more easier to understand and heartbreaking to read. So kudos to the writer
The only downside is that I noticed a lot of filler words and redundant statements that make some parts bland and dry. I understand that the author wrote this novel based on her experience in law school, hence, the detail by detail retelling of law school life through her characters. I'd say it is a double edged sword, this way of writing is catchy, alright, especially for those who are interested in entering law school, but this could also be boring if not done right. There were also parts that I felt like hindi maayos ang build up or parang masyadong napabilis yung time skip.
The earlier parts are catchy, I was getting hyped up but halfway through the build up of the conflict, I felt like there was lacking with the way it was written. Maybe this somehow affected my intake of the climax/conflict of the story. I feel like the conflict has a lot of potential for me as a reader, I was waiting for the angst and for the tears to come out like how it did when I was reading PTG but it never happened. I can feel it, nandoon na, pero may kulang which makes me so frustrated, I can't pin point what is it but it's not really working for me :( .
Maybe I'll try re-reading this again in the distant future because I really really like the plot. Like I said DTG has a lot of potential for me because I love this type of storyline, baka second or third time's the charm pala for me, we'll never know.
Overall, 3.5 stars! ⭐
PS. Can I just say that I love the special chapters?🥹
i like assia, she's new to me.. an innocent probinsyana girl that's main goal is no boyfriend and studies only. i like her determination talaga, she's very goal oriented.
i like and hate vito, depends tbh. he is definitely a likable character considering how sweet and nice he can be to assia. just a vanilla type of guy in my opinion.
what highlighted the story to me more was assia being part of the friend grp. she was the baby, and so well loved by vito, sancho and niko. the bondings were very fun to read, and heartwarming.
like this one BETTER than rtg. medyo grabe lang talaga yung happenings dito. nakakasakit ng puso. pero compared sa iba, well.. its a bit lighter.
honestly sa both mcs may hate and like relationship ako. di ko maexplain basta OK lang talaga siya.
I kind of remember the saying—or maybe more of a question—“Why do bad things happen to good people?” while reading this book. Assia dela Serna, as Vito describes her, is literally the textbook definition of an “angel.”
This book opens your eyes to the fucked-up justice system that exists almost everywhere in the world. I admire Assia’s courage deeply. Despite everything she’s been through, she still held on to her original dream of becoming a lawyer.
Imagine dreaming of becoming a lawyer while also being a victim of the very justice system you’re studying. Imagine wanting to pursue law to help those in need, only for the same people you want to help to turn their backs on you. Still, I’m glad Assia found love in the law—despite everything.
Despite my plethora of school activities, the lack of romantic occurrences in my life compelled me to resume reading Game Series. It was a great decision. Not only was my desire for a love story satisfied, but so was my infuriated mind, which had been in shambles since the election began. As usual, Beeyotch never fails to address societal and political issues in her stories, while also excellently generating sublime characters that you will undoubtedly adore.
I really really want to know more about what happened after the first incident. I was waiting talaga na ma mention sa story.

i just love this book so much solely because of assia and her friendship with niko, vito, and sancho. my first book was rtg and the three had little to no exposure— except sancho— kaya seeing how they became close with assia was cute and heartwarming. the only slowburn i tolerate.
UGHHH VITOOOOO I LOVE YOU SO MUCH IT'S LIKE A BREATH OF FRESH AIR NAFEEL KO ULET ANG LAW SCHOOL VIBES AFTER THE GAGUHAN SA RTG JUSKO PO I LOVED THIS SM
vissia served the slowest of all slow burns and the friends-to-lovers trope perfectly i love them so much they’re literally the purest and healthiest gs couple.
