Ryan Kaine is on the edge….

Lara Orchard is on a mission to prove herself.

Convincing her partner, Ryan Kaine, that she needs combat medical training, they fly to Denmark under assumed identities.

Kaine is on high alert, keeping a watchful eye on her throughout the course — but it’s not her medical skill he’s worried about.

Despite knowing the gunfire and the bombs aren't real, Lara struggles to control her fear, but leaves herself exposed to a threat she doesn't see coming. In a desperate attempt to protect her, and breaking his own moral code and a few bones, Ryan Kaine is pushed to his limits…

If you like Lee Child, Mark Dawson and Robert Ludlum, you’re going to find the Ryan Kaine series compulsively addictive.

Kerry J. Donovan

#1 bestselling author with the US-based Lucky Shores romantic suspense series and the Ryan Kaine military action thrillers, and creator of the popular DCI Jones Casebook series of police procedurals, Kerry J Donovan was born in Dublin, before spending many formative years in West Wales.

Kerry earned a first-class honours degree in Human Biology and a PhD in Sport and Exercise Sciences. A former scientific advisor to The Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, he helped UK emergency first-responders prepare for chemical and biological attacks in the wake of the 9/11 atrocities. This background adds a keen scientific edge to Kerry’s writing.

Kerry’s life experiences help him add an extra layer of realism to his stories and his characters. For example, readers will discover the water-borne adventures of his action hero, Ryan Kaine, a former member of the Royal Navy’s Special Boat Services, as authentic and exciting as a night-time dip in the Bay of Biscay.

As the owner of a “pristine” Honda NC750X, you’ll often find him touring the less well-known regions of Europe in search of interesting locations for his novels. A life-long sports enthusiast and open-water swimmer, the moment Kerry catches a glimpse of the ocean, it’s off with the bike leathers and on with his wetsuit.

A citizen of the world, Kerry recently returned from spending two decades living in the heart of rural Brittany and now lives with Margaret in a recently renovated bungalow in Nottinghamshire, UK.

When not writing, Kerry enjoys riding his motorbike, jogging, swimming, spending time with his four wonderful grandchildren, and travelling the world.

On The Edge.... A quick read, an interesting read...

Lara after Ryan's battles on the 83 case in the last book decides time to take a real medic course, so we have book 5.5 or 6!

Can Ryan really take a back step and let Lara do a course on her own !

A medical training course in Denmark. The perfect chance to prove herself. One woman is on a mission to do just that.

When former country vet, Lara Orchard, convinces international fugitive, Ryan Kaine, she needs combat medical training, they travel to Denmark under assumed identities. While Kaine keeps a very close eye on Lara throughout the course, it's not her medical skill he's worried about. Despite knowing the gunfire and the bombs aren't real, Lara struggles to control her fear, but leaves herself exposed to a threat she doesn't see coming.

In a desperate attempt to protect her, and breaking his own moral code and a few bones, Ryan Kaine is ... On the Edge.

Two main reasons for this book, a great chance to strengthen the relationship between Lara and Ryan.

Two, bring in a nasty character that could be packed away in the memory pack for a later book!

This lightning fast novella is the sixth episode in the best selling Ryan Kaine's 83 series of action thrillers.

Great to catch up with a whole series of books of Ryan Kaine, although behind many others!!

Four stars.

Once again Kerry Donovan has created a terrific story in the world of Ryan Kaine and Laura Orchard. I loved getting to see another side of Ryan and Laura; one in which Ryan isn't trying to save someone else, but fighting for "his Laura". Mr. Donovan shows a kinder/gentler side of Ryan while at the same time, showing exactly what Ryan is capable of when someone he loves (especially Laura) is threatened. While the story is not greatly involved (being just a novella) it still manages to cover all the bases of suspense, tension, and action, with touches of the love story we've come to expect between Ryan and Laura. It also provides the perfect lead-in to the next book in the series, which I look forward to getting my hands on. I have read all of Mr. Donovan's work (as far as I know) and he has yet to disappoint me. He didn't this time either. If you haven't read the series, be sure you do. You're missing out.

Still very racist, but also lots of action and that is what keeps me reading....

Other then the highly racist sayings and characters, I truly enjoyed the goings on of Ryan Kaine and crew.
Doc " Lara Orchard" , Ryan's lady and doc on call has signed up for a medical combat course. Of Course , they come across a white supremacist gross dude that thinks that women are only good for sex, and in the kitchen .... Boy does Dr Lara upset him !!!
One thing leads to another, and White dude dares to tangle with the dynamic duo ...
Stupid white guy !!!
Lots of action kept me entertained, but I do indeed wish that this world was more inclusive to people that aren't pink\white.
Oh well, on to the next racist rant......

Another installment of the Ryan Kaine series and we find Lara learning to be a medic. A rose among thorny dangerous men.
Simulated injuries become real injuries and emotions become heightened as Ryan protects those who are important to him.
Blood and a wee bit of love make this a true Ryan Kaine novella.
"Wait until I get you alone, Ryan Liam Kaine."
"His powers of recuperation operated perhaps fifty percent faster than the average patient, which was a huge advantage in Ryan's line of work."

The 6th book is different to the others in the series, as it focuses on Lara Orchard, whom ex-SBS Captain, Ryan Kaine has now known for 8 months, on a training course. After a dramatic few days in Denmark, with a dominant antagonist, the story ends with the arrival of a message indicating the next book will continue to build on the story following Ryan’s support of The 83 victims’ families. Although it was good to get to know Lara better, I did miss that part of the series, in this novella which finished far too quickly for me but did show that Ryan really needs to recover his edge.

While trying not to include spoilers….really still enjoy the premise of the stories and the principal characters. For me personally, I dropped a star on this rating based on the “villains” in this story. It was a difficult read for me as the dialog the villains used was excessively offensive. While I agree there are people in this world that fit that mold I find then despicable and vile. Ryan deals out justice accordingly but I just had personal issues giving page time to those type of people.

Short on length and action.

I really hope Mr. Donovan can turn it around in the next book or two of this series. The entire plot of these stories is getting wrapped around the relationship between Ryan and Laura, and I’m 99% sure that people aren’t reading books in this genre for the inner turmoil Ryan feels, torn between his desire to keep Laura safe and his longing to have her by his side. Yech….

Different.

A shorter story than is the norm which for me is disappointing. Having said that, a slightly different approach has been taken which involves Lara coming into her own. Coup!e that with the fact that Ryan will protect her at all cost and yes, it is a good novel.
The action is fast paced as expected and all the action is based in Denmark. You will have to read the book to find out what goes on!

Author needs a year off.

Author needs a year off. 20% of the book is filler regurgitating the previous story. Many authors use a prologue for that which doesn't cut down the book. And the story line itself was boring once you recognized the well worn Allies v. Nazis theme. Mr. Donovan can do better.

Extremely exciting!

Everything about this series has been exactly that, extremely exciting from the beginning and only increases as you're turning the pages faster. This Author brings everything you want in these novels and more. The suspense, fast paced action, the care given to each of the families of those that died.

On The Edge

I gave it a 4 because I feel that the author is word padding the “Doc” relationship of protection. It gets old after the first 2-3 books. The author may feel the need for readers who did not start at the first book.

I loved the scene where Lara is practicing her battle medic skills. The action picks up when an unexpected threat comes for her and Ryan must react to quash the oncoming assault, not without great danger to himself, his love, and his mission.

Repetitive

Disappointing , The first few books were entertaining but have become very mediocre with the story line and extremely predictable! It seems that the Masters are demanding quantity over quality! Such a disappointment

more trash talk than action.

This is the only Ryan Kaine book I haven’t felt positive about. The obscene trash talk was over the top and contributed little. It was actually pretty boring. Time to move on…

Find Something Better

There’s nothing distinguished about On The Edge, nothing to rave about, nothing that makes the work special. I’m seriously asking myself if I want to read more of Donovan’s work.

This will be the last book in the series I'll read. The first one was very good, but each subsequent book was a greater disappointment. I don't know if the author thought it would be a good idea to be more "edgy," but it was very off-putting.

Downhill Fast

This book in the series starts weak and goes downhill fast. A fake Irish accent? “The cheese and butter business?” Gave up there.

Not the best in this series, no real plot and it mainly centres around a disgusting South African racist and he really isn't worth a whole book being written about him.

Pretty Good

Quite short and nothing to do with the ‘83’ but nevertheless a good read.
OK as a stand alone story but much better read in sequence with the rest of the series.

Dr. Lara

The storyline centered around Lara's training as a combat medic. The interaction with one of her classmates creates the chaos and conflict.

Two stories in one

This book contained two different stories in two different locations. One centered around Ryan Kaine and Lara, and the second starred Danny. Two for one!
