Another terrific edition in the Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls series, this time focusing on 100 immigrant women and their global achievements.
You’ll meet a female spy, artists, physicians, archers, scientists, acrobats, actresses, chefs, and many more.
As a child, I loved reading mini bios and wish the Rebel Girls’ books had been available then.
I dare anyone to read this splendid collection and not come away inspired to pursue your most cherished dreams. The colorful illustrations are gorgeous too, done by talented female artists from across the world. 5 of 5 Stars!

Thanks to the author, Rebel Girls and NetGalley for the review copy. Opinions are mine.
The title of this book is pretty self-explanatory: 100 stories about 100 awesome immigrant women. I love that each portrait of the women was done by a different woman-identifying artist (100 portraits and 70 artists). These stories are important ones, but having one page of text for a person’s life story is never enough. The intention is to spark interest in young readers and hopefully they’d read up more about these immigrant women. There were times where the story progression didn’t feel smooth enough, but I guess that is the downside of the very limited length.
While I appreciate all these stories, I did have a little issue with diversity. I can see that the author tried very hard to include as many countries of origin and destination as possible, but 63 out of the 100 stories were immigrant women who ended up moving to the US. Also, as happy as I am to see the mention of one lesbian (yes, the word “lesbian” is used, too), having only 1% being LGBTQ+ is not very reflective of the world population and I wish there were more (or pointed out if there are others in these 100 entries).
And fun (or not-so fun) fact: one of these immigrant women is Timnit Gebru, a computer scientist who was fired from Google earlier this month (Dec 2020) for attempting to publish a paper on the bias and discrimination inherent in AIs. (Note unrelated to the book: AIs are very biased due to how machine learning is done; in short, all data are biased and the AIs trained by said data are nothing but bigoted.)
This collection is very informative, and many of the stories are incredibly wholesome. I think it works as a good introductory book for young children.
I received an e-ARC from Rebel Girls via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
The ARC of this book was provided by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This book belongs to the Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls series, but the concept here is a bit different. This volume focuses on immigrant women, who for some reason or another left their birth country and moved elsewhere. Some did it out of necessity, others just because they were looking for new opportunities. The women included in the book are from all over the world and have very different professions. The author really did an amazing job and every illustration is breathtaking as always. It's a really nice book to read even if you aren't a child anymore or don't have children yourself. I strongly recommend it!
Despite the Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls series being targeted towards youngsters, I found myself as a thirty-something loving every second of this inspirational book and have read each one as well as purchasing several copies for friends and family — both children and adults — and they are always well received. I feel this particular book is especially important due to the division this country is experiencing based on people's views of immigrants; some people need to be reminded just how much immigrants have contributed to our society and societies around the globe. It does a fantastic job of illustrating how their achievements are just as worthy and valid as anyone elses and should be celebrated alongside those who are British by birthright; this is not only a positive message for adults to hear but also children. There's often a disparity between how much people believe immigrants benefit the economy and the country as a whole, brought about by the media and politicians, and their true value, however, there's no doubt this superb and uplifting book rightly sets that straight.
Elena Favilli has once again created a book that is both educational and entertaining and featuring some exceptional artwork, too. These books empower girls to pursue their dreams without limits and inspire children to dream bigger and realise their fullest potential, by introducing them to extraordinary women throughout history. The women and girls featured in this instalment are from all walks of life and from both the past and present. Each of the stories is complemented beautifully by a vibrant full-page portrait of the individual in question drawn by a selection of different female artists and a two-page spread is dedicated to each of the extraordinary immigrant women. Information provided about each individual: their name and occupation, their life story, date of birth (and passing, where relevant) and the country they immigrated to and emigrated from. From a magician to a neuroscientist, a spy to a figure skater, this is a heartwarming and thought-provoking collection of bedtime stories inspired by the life and adventures of 100 heroic women. Roll on bedtime! Many thanks to Rebel Girls for an ARC.
Beautiful illustrations. Great choices in who to feature (I loved that a couple from my neck or the woods were included too). And a diverse range of careers - neuroscientists to ballerinas with activists and authors in between!
Thanks to Netgalley for sending me an advanced copy of this book, which to be honest I was really looking forward to reading.
I had already read the first two books of Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls and I loved them and this was no exception, I even think I liked it much more than the others.
In this we learn the story of a hundred immigrant women who in their own way contributed to society and the world to make it a better place.
But apart from the achievements these women had, we also see how it was hard for some of them to be in a country that is not theirs because of the discrimination they suffered and I think it is important to know their stories, tell them so that characters are in their lives. same position, they can see that they can achieve great things despite being an immigrant.
Again, thanks to netgalley for sending me this book in exchange for an honest review.

When Favilli and Cavallo's Good Night Stories For Rebel Girls first became a hit a couple of years ago, I thought the idea very endearing, and made a note to check them out properly after flipping through one in a book shop. When this new installment in the series, focused on immigrant women past and present, became available as an instant download, I jumped at the opportunity.
This is the first book that Cavallo did not contribute to, it is solely Favilli's work. The one hundred women included all left their countries of birth for different reasons—some to seek new opportunities, some out of necessity, some moved more than once. The women included were diverse in every sense of the word: From all over the world, and with all sorts of backgrounds and occupations, ranging from scientists, to athletes (a bit too many for my taste), businesswomen, politicians, artists, and activists.
Of the one hundred women included, I was familiar with about a dozen. I didn't keep count, but I'd say that most were contemporary women still alive and active today, and only a small fraction historical figures—I suppose the women who paved the way in more significant ways (I'm thinking of real watershed moments; big scientific discoveries, the suffrage, Civil Rights Movement, etc.) have already been included in the previous volumes, or didn't fit what this volume sets out to do, which is to teach children that people have worth and potential to achieve great things no matter where they came from, their funny accent, imperfect speech, or the color of their skin. In any case, I find the "...who changed the world" in the title a bit of a hyperbole.
Being Good Night stories, all the chapters begin with a "Once Upon a Time..." or "Once there was a girl...", and the text is very simplified, and meant to be appropriate and inspirational for young children. Concepts that would likely be new to a child, and may put a parent in a difficult position when asked to explain, such as "racism", "discrimination", "segregation", "refugee", "prejudice", "undocumented", or "holocaust", have footnotes and are succinctly defined in a glossary. I somehow can't see a child who'd enjoy a book like this be satisfied with those short explanations, but they might be good gateways for more in-depth, educational conversations. The hard topics covered however definitely didn't jibe with the easy texts, and I feel that a child mature enough to engage with these mature topics would have a higher reading level and find these vignettes too simplified and thus unsatisfying or not engaging and interesting enough.
It's a cute book, but I was most certainly not the target audience, and before buying this one, I'd probably look at the earlier volumes covering less obscure women—unless, of course, this is specifically a gift for an immigrant child who'd be inspired by these particular stories.

Note: I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review, but it did not include the illustrations, which are a big part of this series. The digital copy I accessed was also poorly formatted, with the quotes from the end of a chapter blending into the title and first paragraph of the next, making it hard or impossible to read. These issues did not have a big impact on my rating, only on my enjoyment.
I was invited to review an early copy of the third instalment of the bestselling Good Night Stories series. This time the stories and illustrations concentrate on women who emigrated from their country of birth. Among those 100 women are very well known names such as Rihanna or Madeleine Albright.
Personally, I enjoyed the stories of less well-known-to-me women like Lupe Gonzalo (Migrant Farmer and Labour Organiser from Guatemala), or football referee Jawahir Jewels Roble (from Somalia) far more than the stories of Diane von Fürstenberg or Gloria Estefan.
The outstanding illustrations in this book were made by 70 artists identifying as women from all over the world. A list of all the names is included in the back of the book.
An empowering read that shouldn’t be missing on any shelf.
This book was amazing! It was so much fun to know about so many heroic women. These women are an inspiration to everyone in their own ways. The illustrations are stunning too!
Thank you to NetGalley for my electronic ARC in exchange for my honest review. This book will be published October 13, 2020.
This is the third book in the series. Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls: 100 Tales of Extraordinary Women was published in 2016 and volume 2 in 2018. This latest book focuses on rebel girls who are immigrants.
I thought this was such a great idea - empowering young girls via bedtime stories to pursue their dreams despite all odds. I’m unclear what age group is targeted here but the short summaries are pretty simplistic. And yet the subject matter would be challenging for young girls: abolitionist, discrimination, refugee, prejudice, Holocaust to name a few.
My other big complaint is this book did not transfer well to a Kindle. The formatting was off, the illustrations didn’t display and it was hard to read.
2 stars for context but 1 Star for Kindle formatting.
Many thanks to NetGalley for providing me with an advance reader's copy in exchange for an honest review.
This installment of Rebel Girls follows the stories of 100 women who have achieved greatness in their respective fields and are immigrants. A few stories are more familiar than the others and we also get to read about lesser known brave and compassionate women.
All these women have made significant impact in the world. The stories are pretty short and children can read this book and get to know about a single person everyday. The diversity of the stories in this book is good and everyone can find a story that appeals to them the most.
The formatting feels a bit off in the Kindle version but I am pretty sure the hardcover is going to be beautiful to read. A nice book to read for inspiration.
So, I was originally gonna give this book 2.5/5. It's an average book, my main issue with it was that it mainly focused on women who immigrated to the United States with few mentions of any other countries. That was my initial review untill they included Golda Meir (a racist war criminal) as a "rebel girl" lol. I immediately lost interest after that tbh. Oh one more thing, when it comes to people who left European countries and went to Israel or the US.... the book makes sure to mention it's because of the Nazis. But, when it mentions people who left any other countries because of war (Iraq, Vietnam,...etc.) it fails to mention the reason ?? The book is intended for adults and children but I wouldn't recommend it at all for neither. Nice picture tho!

This is the third instalment in the bestselling "Good Night Stories" series and it focuses on 100 great women who emigrated from their birth country to another one. I think this one is a very informative and interesting book. I enjoyed every single story and I'm so happy to had the opportunity to found out more about women I already know and others I completely discovered thanks to this book. This is for sure an empowering and inspirational reading, I strongly recommend it!
My e-arc lacked the illustrations, which I think are a large part of the Rebel Girl series, so I've decided not to rate this book. I do want to say that I thought it was pretty good despite the missing art. I haven't read the previous books, so I don't know how it compares, but I thought it covered some interesting women, only a handful of which I knew beforehand. I think the idea behind the series is a truly wonderful one, and I'm really pleased that the series has proved to be successful. My main gripe with this book, though, is that I thought the bios were too short. A small page of writing is not sufficient enough space to cover the lives of these women, and because the bios were so short, I often felt I didn't get a clear image of the women in question. I also felt that the writing was perhaps a little too juvenile. I know that these are children's books, but I think they could have benefited from a little more complexity. But overall, this is a pretty good book and I imagine it's a good continuation of the book series.

I’m a proud owner of the first two Rebel Girls, both of which I’ve been reading to my girl; and I just recently bought this too!
Sticking true to their style - short snippets of each the brilliant women accompanied by vibrant and gorgeous illustrations.
I’m in awe of their stories. They don’t let their circumstances deter them from achieving their dreams and this one focused on immigrant women would make such an inspiring collection to all girls and even young women, who feel that they don’t belong and that the whole world is against them. Great lessons can be learned from these 100 immigrant women! I can’t wait to read their stories to my girl!
Brilliant work once again! Highly recommended!
Thank you Netgalley and publisher for the eARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are mine.
I love everything that Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls create! The books are fabulous as is their podcast and this book is no different. 100 inspirational women from all over the world who have immigrated at some point during their lives for various reasons are showcased wonderfully here. From different points in time, careers, and cultures these women are sure to inspire and become a heroine for a rebel girl. Each woman is uniquely illustrated by female illustrators from around the world and the artwork is stunning!
Don't you live whe 🌟women💫? because I do! English and Spanish review.
I read the first book of this collection of women stories and I loved it. When I saw this on netgalley I ask for it right away because these types of books gives you such a powerful message. This one in particular tells you about strong inmigrants women from all over the world; no matter their ethnicity, religion, age, race. They are from all times periods, all professions and as I said I, do think this can bring a powerful message to all the girls out there.
Enjoy it very much :)
