She sends the dead. He heals the living.
Together, they destroy the world.

Scarred by childhood trauma, Sister Kaedra never wanted to join the order that sings the dead into the afterlife. Yet with her rare talent desperately needed in the battle-torn land, she must do her duty. Otherwise, tortured spirits will corrupt into vicious, bloodthirsty monsters.

Once outside the Order's lands, Kaedra sees first-hand the evils of war. She watches her beloved partner, the healer Lukoan, slide into despair. One by one the atrocities of war threaten to break them, and Kaedra's doubts regarding her calling fester into heresy.

When tragedy strikes, one defiant note changes their lives, and deaths, forever.

A redemptive, dark tragedy.

This one is hard for me to review perhaps because it is so, so dark. Maybe? It gradually got super depressing up until about 90% of the way through and yet I couldn't put it down. If you have experienced deep, deep tragedy in your life perhaps this will be more hopeful for you than others or perhaps it could go the other way depending on the person. This is definitely not a feel good book, but I suppose the title and the caution at the beginning give that away.

The story and the characters are really well done. The rhythm of the writing completely fits the story. The writing is artfully choppy, and it fits the book perfectly. It's like someone who is traumatized and jerking through their thoughts is writing it - totally appropriate for the book! Love that!

So.... I am glad I read it, but I do still feel icky. I'll be thinking about the story and processing it for a while. I have my own traumas I am working through. The author really understands abuse and its many facets. If you are a woman who has experienced abuse by a spouse or partner this has the potential to both trigger you and help you feel understood. If you have someone in your life that is going through an abusive situation and you don't quite understand them, this could help.

This took courage...

I applaud the heart and strength behind this book. It shattered me but as a great book said "Better to go to the house of mourning Than to go to the house of feasting, For that is the end of all men; And the living will take it to heart. The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning..." May this book increase your wisdom and compassion and cause you to seek the One who is the true singer who accompanies the believing to their rest. "The Mighty One, will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing.”

Heartbreaking and full of hope.

I love all her books but this is the best one. Character development is so good that after finishing this book my heart mourned the loss of people I had come to care about. The conclusion is well done, it leaves you with a feeling of peace that I find quite rare with stories. This story is unique, beautiful and absolutely worth reading.

My feelings are all over the place but mostly SAD

Ok, I don’t really know how to rate this book. I have given it four stars ⭐️ because it’s just so sad there really is no happy at all in this book (in my opinion only) ... When the other reviewers say heartbreak, WOW do they ever!! Honestly it is all sad, the only thing good to come from all the heartbreak is the main character finally finds Acceptance in herself. I guess that is such a good thing to come out of everything in this book. I do want to warn everyone, I wouldn’t really call it a HAPPY ending but it does end on a good note, you just better have tissues with you!!!

love and hate it

This was amazingly written with great character development and a real connection to the main characters. With that said, it makes it harder to ever want to read it again because it’s a tragedy piece. Glad I read it this one and only time. I encourage you to join the journey once too.

Destruction in Grief

A beautiful story about loss and letting go. Amity Thompson envisions a harsh world torn apart by war and the traumas of those trying to heal and provide comfort.

DNF at page 190.

The story was really interesting, but just didn’t captivate me, and I didn’t have the endurance to try and finish it currently.
