I can't see the shadows that lurk in the dark.

It was supposed to be my first summer on my own, but then I meet Seth, Axel, Jasper, and Cody.

There's something about them that drew me closer and they seemed hell-bent on protecting me.
I didn't think I needed protecting until people started showing up dead in the woods.

So much for a quiet summer...
Can I escape the shadows, or will the darkness consume me?

Shrouded In The Dark is a standalone shifter paranormal reverse harem novel with 140k+ words that includes M/M.

I liked the concept of this book, especially because Becca strays from the typical norms presented in books like this. However, I felt that the relationship between Becca and the guys felt a bit forced. Cody by far was my favourite character and changed the dynamic between the characters. Overall it was a good read.
Looking forward to seeing more of Aspen Black's work

DNF @ 71%.. did I even read the same book as everyone else? I’ll admit, the idea of a MC mating with different shifters was certainly intriguing. I also give this book a point for the diversity: our MC is plus-size and suffers from anxiety (she also can’t see in the dark due to a medical condition). However, that is about it for me. This book was all over the place, and I thought it might’ve been because the timeline is weird (college students on break, summer in the mountains, etc) but I think it just comes down to the writing style. The best way I could sum it up would be: 2016 Wattpad Twilight fan fiction.

The characters are pretty flat and I don’t find anything really redeeming about any of them. Stereotypical boys-next-door who are all bros and have been friends for years. MM is in the book, which I don’t mind, but for all of the talk about “being pack” and “being family” it felt like their interactions were out of necessity, not desire.

I found the MC to be so… unappealing that I honestly had a hard time reading this book. Not to mention that her best friend is essentially dating one of the boys that she befriends, and yet when she starts to develop feelings for said boy, she is genuinely surprised that her BF shoots it down. I mean sure, maybe they were in a weird patch (hello, summer break?) but I was appalled that she thought it was even appropriate. Anyways, maybe I just didn’t suspend enough belief with this book.

What in the pick me girl twilight fan fiction wattpad fuckery was this?

Let's play a game called "Did it Happen in Twilight or This Book?"
1) There's a group with a funny name that begins with a V that oversees the Paranormal beings and exterminates them if they become too visible to humans... (Venandi = Volturi???)
2) The fmc is human and in danger from a rogue Paranormal being so a family of Paranormal beings agree to patrol outside her house to protect her
3) the fmc is destined to be with the Paranormal guys but they initially reject her bc she's human and they could hurt her. They also have the option of "turning" her into the Paranormal being but don't want to do that to her so they resist that option until it's her only choice for survival
4) they have to bite the fmc in various places to turn her after her heart stops beating bc their saliva will save her
5) the fmc becomes a newborn Paranormal being with an UNHEARD OF amount of control over her strength and powers...there's also a guy in the group who can't believe it bc he struggled with his own self control for a long time
6) the newborn take a run through the woods with her mate shortly after waking up from turning

***if you guessed: these all happened in twilight AND this book you would be correct**

Let's not even get into all of the fatphobic references made about the plus sized fmc by herself and others. Boooooo.

I LOVED this story!! I like the twists, the intrigue, and how much speculation I had throughout this book! The author drops the bread crumbs and then BAM! The story takes a turn you didn't see coming! I have to say, Cody is probably my favorite. I know! They're a package deal but come on! The author is amazing and really draws you in. It's not all action and bad things happening, we get so many touching moments, so many romantic and melt your heart why can't this be my story moments, and then we get hit with action and steam and intrigue-and wow with some of the twists! The evolution of the FMC is what surprised me the most and besides Cody, might be my next favorite part of the book. It doesn't seem possible that one book could bring a character into their own in such a natural way, but the author does it magnificently! This book is the definition of an amazing romance. It's one of those where you'll find yourself so involved, you'll be quoting it at random moments. And the ending is as perfect as you can get.

🌟🌟🌟🌟💫

Ok first off, this book is so freaking hot! 🥵🥵🥵 Word of advice, listen in public with caution to this audiobook. Bridget and Jake Bordeaux do such a phenomenal job of bringing all of these characters to life! Both do such an outstanding job of adjusting their voices to each character. I also loved Loved LOVED that the narration is fully integrated so anytime one of the guys speaks during one of the sections that is from Becca’s POV, then Jake narrates it & vice versa. It is so well edited together too that it sounds completely natural.

I really enjoyed the storyline of this book. It is a very well done stand alone reverse harem, usually I find stand-alone RH to not feel fully developed for each of the harem members, this is absolutely not the case for each character. Each member has such depth to them & great character development.

Who can’t resist some sexy shifters, a stubborn artsy curvy red head, a hidden world of magic & so much more! If you love paranormal reverse harems then this is definitely one for you!

DNFing at 10%. I'm so irritated with the FMC that I am nitpicking everything. Also, lots of weird written sentences - lots where the same word is repeated in the same and/or subsequent sentences. Usually regarding appearances. Not a direct quote, but stuff like this "His hair is hot, he's such a hot guy. Wow, his voice was so smooth and hot."

I thought this book was going to knock my socks off. From the first chapter there was so much potential. The introduction of the Charatera and the Inuyasha reference at the beginning of the book gave me hope.

That hope was sustained up until I was 55% into the book. The storyline for the first half was so intriguing. Not only were we learning more about the characters, but we saw the FMC go through some major character development. Additionally, the main plot of the book up until this point had me hooked.

And then once the first plot arc was complete the second one that was really just lurking in the background started to develop. And it was definitely not as good as the first. I found the second half of the book was MUCH slower than the front half. It was a struggle to get through the second half because of this. And to make matters worse, the climax of the second storyline was the penultimate chapter in the book. With the following chapter being the final one, in my opinion there wasn’t enough resolution time.

If you ask me this book could’ve been 2 separate novels based on the storylines.

One other thing that irked me throughout the book was the description of Axel. At first he was described as having lighter brown skin, but in the middle of the book it’s said that his bear fur is a deep brown to match his skin. It because confusing to me because I didn’t know how to picture him and it just bothered me throughout.

Kindle. 3.6. (had a good start not a good ending). I liked that it was an instant connection but not at the same time there was just enough story for it to be fast paced without it feeling overly rushed. Towards the end of the book some of the plot just became kinda annoying and typical/predictable/cliche not a good way and stuff just felt thrown in. The ending also was beyond rushed. Baseline I liked the plot, storyline and pace during the first half of book but not so much the second half. Also wasn’t a fan of Becca’s character development she got a little annoying and the change didn’t flow.

Shrouded in the Dark

This book drew me in from the beginning. I adored the female main character Becca and could connect to her struggles in general. I loved how she was portrayed as realistic as she is, struggling with anxiety, but making her own way through life regardless.

Her parents were absolute goals. Fun, loving and (over) protective, but still giving Becca room to make her own choices in life.

Then there's the men, who were absolutely amazing and just perfect for the FMC.

The author created a world I undoubtedly want to see more of.

I really enjoyed the book overall. The characters were lovely and the sort of cozy world that was developed from the start with the small town and the cabins was amazing. My only issue is I feel like it was all shoved into one book whereas it could've maybe been a duology (between this and Felicity's book)? I would've liked slower growth with the enemy and their defeat as it felt very rushed and anticlimactic.

I liked Becca and her guys. I liked that it was an instant connection - not necessarily attraction or love - except for maybe Cody, but the were all protective and caring. This is a stand-alone, and it’s fast paced, and fun. I kind of want Felicity’s story, but at the same time I’m not sure I’ve forgiven her for her actions in this story. Overall, this is a fun, fast paced read :)

This standalone was just what I was looking for when I was browsing! I loved the FMC. She wasn’t your typical FMC that made me love her even more. And the guys🔥🔥🔥 I flew right through this book.

This was so very, very good for the first 60%..... then it lost a bit of its appeal, and I couldn't even really tell you why. It's still a good story, but I slogged through the last bit. Maybe it was just my mood at the time. Deserves a 4 for the first half at least.

Mhmmmm, this book was overall a nice, sweet, and funny read. I thoroughly enjoyed the funny and witty comments back and forth between Becca and the guys - that Cody is a hoot.

It was nice to read about an FMC that was different, and also having different shifters involved with her. The latter part of the book felt stretched, and I would have preferred it focus more on Becca's relationship with each of the guys, rather than about the fight with the Venandi. The inclusion of Wyn as part of the pack felt forced and unnecessary.

Be advised there is quite a bit of MM, which was also much hotter than that with Becca and the guys. The guys are sweet, no bullying, but they are not immediately into Becca at first, which is good, as the relationship-building in the first half of the book was really good. However, lots of unanswered questions, and the ending was abrupt. I felt like something was missing at the end.

Okay, I really wanted to like this book.

Plus size Mc, Wonderful.
Reverse Harem, amazing.
Great spice with crossing swords, I'm here for it!!!
Shifters, literal cherry on top.

I enjoyed the overall feel of certain characters, the concept was good, every book deserves love and to be written. Also, the parts I did enjoy, I found myself smiling at my kindle all goofy... I wasn't looking for a literary masterpiece.....
BUT the underlying misogyny was horrendous enough for me to start focusing on book flaws vs being able to enjoy the read. And not from the male characters...but from the FMC

1. I don't usually complain about poor editing when its an indie author, but be warned. The book is full of mistakes but whatever. That doesn't take any stars away. Just a heads up.
2. The "you're not like other girls" trope isn't an issue for me usually. But it was awful in this book. The FMC opens a BEER in front of the guys and they all stop and are shocked saying they cant believe she opened her own beer, that most girls need them to open it. Insert biggest eye roll possible. Same goes when she has seen star wars, when she plays video games, etc. No. This is a no for me.
3. By 50 % into the book, she's decided she wants all the guys, including the one who is dating her "best friend" and we are suppose to see this as a good thing?? And her reasoning is because her friend hasn't talked to the guy that summer, even though the friend expressed familial issues several times, and voiced how challenging it was to be able to talk to her at all. Then he goes against his "I'm not messing around with anyone cause I'm dating this one chick" to ... "let me put on a performance and mess around with everyone before talking to her...."???? What?? The whole thing is a mess. If the author thinks that the underlying reasons that we find out later were enough for a redemption arc, it fell short for me. I think if certain things were discovered in a different order, it might have been fine.
4. The fact that the author says women rarely are able to make the transformation of being "made" because their minds are too weak......WTF?? Its your world, and the reason you give is because women aren't as strong as men??? You can literally create ANY magical reason as to why there are fewer women. But as an author, your go-to is how weak women are.... Okay.

Anywho... I'll stop here. Two stars cause I enjoyed the spice I guess but getting there was hard.

Should have stopped while it was ahead

This book suffered from being too long. Had the book ended when Becca changed or shortly after the book would have been a solid piece and at least 4 stars. But the whole second half of the book was basically an entirely different book and it felt rushed, and like it came out of left field.

The best part of this book is the strong M/M relationships in the pack. Becca was part of the pack not the primary focus. There were solid, loving relationships between the male MCs before and after she got there and it made the group stronger and more believable.

I would have liked a whole lot more information about the male MCs and their pasts. For a book this long, we should know more about the MCs. Who is Seths brother, why does Cody think he has demons, what is Jaspers story at all, what’s up with Axels family, who are Wyn’s friends, and what new shifter society is Seth trying to build. None of that was explained. I think this would have been a much stronger book if these questions had been answered instead of the second arc of the novel.

I felt a bit mixed about this one.  I really really loved the first half or like the first 70% of the book but then it got a bit harder for me.  I didn't really care about the sort of end drama/plot stuff happening in the book.  I felt like it wasn't really necessary.  I would have rather seen more of their relationship instead. I actually had a hard time convincing myself to finish the book even at like 90%, I just cared so little about that section of the plot, even though I LOVED the first section.

I loved Becca.  She shares my name, and I love reading about a chubby heroine.  There are not enough of them in romance books.

I found it a bit for me that for a romance it still kind of felt unsettled at the end. Besides with one character, there wasn't really any I love yous back and forth. It seemed more like the start of a relationship but I wasn't really buying the "we are together forever" bit. It also seemed like the guys were so set and content in their relationship already she seemed like an afterthought that wasn't really necessary. I felt myself feeling jealous for her.  lo

Our FMC Becca spends her summer vacation alone in her families cabin. She is usually shy and introverted but can’t help the pull she feels for her 4 neighbors. As “animal” attacks start to happen around her cabin the 4 men vow to protect her. But will she accept them still after they reveal their secrets?

This is definitely not in my top tier of shifter romances. And I have read A LOT! There was something missing for me between her and the guys. I didn’t feel any tension or excitement as their relationships progressed.

Also in the first part of the book the men are so enthralled with her because she’s watched Star Wars and likes rare steak. They’ve NEVER met any girl who likes those things. 🙄

There were some cute moments and in the last 20% or so it started to set up a much larger magical world than just shifters. Had that been introduced earlier I think I would have liked this more.

I finished it so that counts for something but it was more that I didn’t have anything better to read at the time.

I don’t know how I feel about this

First I liked most of the first half but then the second half start disappointing me and the plot was a little all over the place.

I really didn’t like the explanation of why there were less women shifters. Their minds aren’t as strong? Yeah, no thanks. But then I didn’t like the shifter lore either. They aren’t wereanimals and yet they can change their mate with their bite?? I don’t know, then add the mixed feelings the second half gave me.

Jasper was a totally different person from when we first meet him to after a few days at the cabin. Same with Axel and Seth. I loved Cody from the get go.

I really wanted to love this!

Ummm…
That’s it??!?
What the fuck??
Ok. So.

This book took me on a roller coaster ride of feelings.

I was a little iffy at the beginning. I wasn’t sure I liked the way the guys thought about Becca and I wasn’t sure about Axel being with Becca’s best friend.
But. We got through that little phase and everything seemed fine.
Things started to pick up.
The sex between all of them was hot.
I started to get to know the guys a little more and I was really vibing with the story and characters and how they interacted. Though I still wasn’t completely, totally convinced with the way they thought about Becca by the end.
Something was just off. It felt a little forced. Like the guys were, one, happy with just having each other, and two, just falling into the relationship with Becca because of the bond and the traumatic thing that happened.
We didn’t really even get any heartfelt, romantic moments from most of the guys with Becca.
I don’t know. I felt like the main focus was on the MM aspects of the book. Which is fine. I enjoyed those bits. But it made it feel like Becca was more of an add-on than actually a part of the pack.

And all throughout the first like half of the book little things are getting said or being done that seem to hint at some big secret.

Then the end comes and fucking nothing.
Those things that seemed like hints weren’t talked about or even thought about ever again.

Is there a second book with these characters that I don’t know about?
Because if there isn’t then the ending was absolute bullshit.

Also.
Becca was worried about being different after what happens. And all the guys reassure her she isn’t. But she really fucking is. Like a completely different personality. And some of it I get. But it would’ve really helped, I think, if certain things had been mentioned more. Or if she had picked up a sketch pad even One time in the second half of the book…

I don’t know man.

I saw the note from the author at the beginning of the book talking about how this book was written, half at one time then the rest a year later.
Im really wondering if she put those things in at the beginning with a plan for them and then came back after that year and either forgot or decided to switch it up, and never went back through and edited them out.
Honestly I hope that’s the case because if it was just random things she threw in just because then that makes it so much worse.
I mean. They seemed to be foreshadowing. But how they came about was too strange to be any kind of coincidence or even remotely natural, and even Becca in the first half thinks so when she learns more about the guys. But then that damn second half came and everyone dropped all that shit.

Really. This ending made me so fucking frustrated. Not only because of all the shit I just said. But also because of how abrupt it was.
Just. Poof. All the problems are solved. The end!
Cut to black!

Fucking bullshit.
I’ve only ever had this reaction to one other book that I can think of. And it was a series that ended abruptly and unfinished like this one, because the author was tired of writing it and just ended it any damn way she could to be done with it.
I honestly don’t know which one I’m more angry about.
I’m leaning towards this one, even though I wasted time reading 6 books with the other one.

Seriously, it ruined my feelings about the whole book for me.
I fucking hated that ending That much.

Ugh. I feel like screaming right now. I almost wish I had a physical copy of the book so I could throw it across the room. Or I don’t know. Toss it in a volcano.
*sigh*
Excuse me while I grab a drink and find a book to try to calm me the fuck down and maybe erase that dumb shot from my memory.

I had such high hopes for this too.
Fuck man.
I really liked that first half…

This is another book I stumbled upon from a Facebook ad. Two things drew me to it. 1. Plus sized heroine 2. The menagerie of different shifters. I’ve read RH with different types of supernatural beings in them but all shifters of different species was intriguing.

So, I almost quit this book in the first 20%. I’m glad I stuck in there but it definitely wasn’t wowing me. My preferred genre is dark romance and always jealous/possessive Hs. Now, not all books have j/p Hs but I always like them more if they do.

This book kicks off with our anxious, introverted h going to a frat party with her BFF. There we meet two of the eventual Hs but here they are FAR from H material. The h’s BFF is there to see her “crush” Axel. He is one of h’s future Hs. Now there is a rhyme and reason to her BFF & future H “crushing” on each other but it doesn’t reveal until much later in the book. I was very put off by future H being so into h’s BFF that he was hoping she’d end up mating into his pack and being the center of his packs harem.

Second offense, the other H, Jasper, isn’t much better. He immediately puts h into the “friend zone”. His fox really likes her but he isn’t interested beyond friendship. I loathe friends to lovers with every fiber of my being so this was a big strike against it.

I persevered. We meet the other guys and things start to pick up thankfully. Unfortunately, she’s not a shifter and things aren’t super straightforward. She finds herself in danger though and they are already protective so things start to blossom. There’s also the weird situation with the BFF to contend with. She’s away dealing with family stuff and has put Axel on the back burner, she’s ignoring him and apparently dating someone else but doesn’t want to let him go either.

I’m not going to go into the details but it’s a romance so everything works out for everyone eventually.

I liked the Hs here. The h was ok. She had a Mary Sue thing going with a bit if NoT LiKe OtHeR gIrLs mixed in there. She was pretty extraordinary but it was only mildly irksome. I liked this more than I disliked it.

The book is 476 pages, it had a bumpy, slow start for me, this is a medium burn with h and one of the Hs getting it on for the first time around 47%. It felt like a long wait. All the guys are sexually involved so there is one MM scene at like 24%ish but they were a long establishment couple already

The spice takes a while to show up but it’s pretty decent. I’d say above average. I had low expectations but was pleasantly surprised.

The end fell apart for me. Once we progress past h’s dangerous situation and get the mating thing established the focus falls on this secret organization that hunts and kills shifters. Then there’s a resistance organization and we meet vampires and fae and the whole thing just lost me there honestly. I hung in there but there was definite skimming.

No virgins
No separation
No cheating
No scenes with others
No cliffhanger

Safety - as I mentioned before one H starts wanting hs BFF. This turns out to be because she was using pheromones to make him want her. It’s more complicated than that but I don’t want to drop spoilers. She wasn’t ever truly into him. I’d call this pretty safe.

For a long time people have been recommending this book, and I held off because of the standalone, and I usually like series. But thank goodness I decided to read it because it is absolutely excellent.

Usually standalone‘s tend to move super quickly, and it’s Insta live and I can’t get into it. What I loved about this story is that it started off as a friendship between them all. And I loved that. There was definitely instant attraction between a lot of them, but not the in love with them within two days. Not that there’s anything wrong with that but I really enjoyed how this was done.

Another thing that I loved about this book was the polyamorous nature of the harem. There’s a lot of MM (male/male) in this book. If you don’t like MM then this book is probably not for you, but if you do, it’s super hot and also very sweet.

I also really enjoyed the very thorough world building, which isn’t easy to do and a standalone. But I really felt like it was done very well. I could’ve use some more background on the characters… There was some but again difficult to do with a standalone.

A nice thing is this book is part of a duet. The duet is another character from this first book, but I’m hoping that there will be character crossover between the two books. NOTE: I’ve also read in another review that there is a series by Jenn D Young called Snowfalls Pride that should be read before the second duet back because they are characters in that series that cross over into the second book in this Duet. I’m currently reading that now, and I think there are actually a couple series by Jenn D. Young that are before that series. There’s nothing in any of these books that says you have to read those other books, but if you like reading and you like have in the world that’s built by a bunch of different books. I just wanted to give a heads up.

Okay back to this book: One of the things that I loved about having a curvy FMC is that, although in the beginning, she has a little bit of self-confidence issues, and a little bit of why would these attractive men be interested in me?…It didn’t go on for very long. And sometimes I find that books when they have curvy women tend to continue with that “I don’t know why these hot guys like me” or embarrassed about their body. As a curvy woman myself I have pretty good self-esteem. Of course it took a while to get here but I don’t think it’s accurate when plus size women are often portrayed as having super low confidence. So super bravo, for that! ❤️

Honestly, this book is so good. It has so many great elements: strong, FMC, sexy, confident male characters, a really great storyline, family building, really, sexy, sexy scenes. Humor. And lots of sweetness in the romance.

Notes:
❤️ reverse harem
❤️ Kindle unlimited.
❤️ First person point of view. Multiple points of view.
❤️4 to 5 men.
❤️Lots of MM.
❤️ Polyamorous harem. Very sweet.
❤️Very funny
❤️Plus size FMC
❤️ Shifters
❤️ light bdsm (spanking)
❤️ Medium burn?
❤️ Very spicy!

I find it unusual for a shifter story that the shifters don't immediately sense that Becca is their mate. I was feeling very tense about Axel because he was with Becca's best friend, Felicity, at the beginning -- I considered them a couple although it seems they weren't really dating? Not sure how that works -- but anyway I was like, please don't tell me he cheats on Felicity with Becca and it was a bit of a murky thing but I felt satisfied at how it all panned out.

I love shifters because generally they're alpha, possessive and protective without tipping over the line into being domineering, manipulative, and controlling, and this proved to be the case in this book. If you don't mind MM (which I don't) then it's a good story, because all the guys are mates with each other before Becca comes along and becomes their "anchor". It was good to see their bond and their friendship, that they're not just together because of Becca but they already knew and loved each other and then absorb Becca into their family. I was also glad that there was a scene where they all come together to pleasure her, cos I've read RH where the FMC only sleeps with each mate individually.

I felt that Cory stood out the most in the harem as the prankster and the 'brat' of the group, as well as the one with a traumatic past, but there weren't much distinguishing characteristics for the other three men, and I felt like we never really got to know them as well as we knew Cory; we don't know what drives them, what made each of them into who they are. I wanted to know why Seth's younger brother, for instance, isn't part of their pack.

I liked that Becca, despite her anxiety attacks, is strong when she needs to be and pushes her own boundaries to do what she feels needs to be done. She might face anxiety, but she's no doormat or pushover. However she did have a TSTL moment in the book when she put herself in danger, which resulted in her nearly dying. I liked Becca's close bond with her family, especially her stepdad and ... not sure whether step-siblings or half-siblings. Still, she grew and developed more confidence in herself throughout the book.

Overall, a fairly satisfying read.

God this book was so long and for what

1. The pro, plus size heroine who suffered from anxiety and a temporary blindness problem.

-The con, her entire personality was her anxiety and that she couldn't see at night. And somehow people made fun of her or thought she was weird? I've been a fat woman all my life and I could walk around dressed as a clown every day and people would still choose to make fun of my size rather than anything else. You're trying to tell me people made fun of her because she had to carry a flashlight with her and got anxious? bffr she talked about it a lot and was like, "omg here we go now I have to tell them I'm blind at night. they're gonna run away from me blahhhh"

2.The pro, Felicity is her best friend who is actually a good friend. Respects her disability, doesn't make fun of it or her and actively sets out on her own to include her friend. She doesn't hide Becca. In fact throughout the entire book the reader can see how Felicity clued everyone in on how to make Becca's environment the most comfortable and safest for her.

-No con to Felicity, book two is her love story but I'm not reading it because I really hate this style of writing.

3. The men were fun and sweet. But it wasn't realistic at all tbh. But it's a book and I love living in fantasy land with the rest of you hoes.

-Con omg they were so fucking annoying. their banter was constant. I loved Cody, he was so cute and cuddly but I wished he would shut the fuck and that the scenes could move along. Again, this damn book was so long and there was so much talking and going around in circles. Get to the point!

-Con everything Becca did the boys would rejoice. fr she opened a beer by herself and they were like OmG a wOmAn CaN Do tHAaT? THe WoMaN We DaTE aRe So MeEk aNd LaMe.

I wished this ended when and then book two could have been the second conflict

Copypasta from my Audible review: I really enjoyed both narrators (fantastic pacing & tone changes!), the main characters, and the overall plot, minus the very rushed feeling ending - as a writer there were a few nitpicky things that grated, lots of “I did this, I did that” rather than showing that is very choppy when read out loud but honestly the overall concept and the absolutely delicious steamy scenes made up for it.

I loved that the relationships between the harem were established before they met the heroine, I loved that the men were so emotionally secure and affectionate, I love that they didn’t all instalove with the heroine and brought her into the fray at a reasonable pace. The shifter elements where a mix of traditional and unique that was enjoyable. Once the pack was established with it’s new members the steamy scenes just got better. Some of it was a little repetitive, like Cody’s brat antics, but it was endearing. I wish Jasper had gotten more screen time so the speak; I feel like he got the least of all and almost felt like an afterthought after his part in the beginning.

I wish the ending had been extended; it really abruptly cut off and despite being advertised as a standalone feels incomplete and like we’re missing the completion of the Fae business which is where I left off the fifth star. I don’t feel completely satisfied like I normally would after finishing such an intriguing story. But overall I’ll read this author’s work again.

(And I would definitely listen to these narrators again. Like I said above they were really well paced and the tone changes were excellent; they were great about alternating voices too and just overall really enjoyable to listen to. I struggle with flat narrations and this was anything but.)

this book needed significant editing for plot, pacing, and style/grammar. it was way too long, especially since significant portions of it didn’t need to be as fleshed out as they were. the supposed big bad was dead by 55% but their relationship wasn’t settled so a whole new big bad was introduced and then dealt with in a very anti-climactic “battle” at the very end. everyone was weirdly juvenile in action and speech. also the whole “a girl who like star wars?!?!?!” thing nearly took me out. is jasper a misogynist or becca or the author? it felt very not like other girls pick me. i guess the characters are young, but not so young as to realize that women can have interests because they are also people? and this is definitely a me thing but it’s weird that her coffee shop order is a flavored steamed milk. there wasn’t a correct noun possessive form until 94% into the book; the author used exclusively plural forms till then or the incredibly awkward “so-and-so and i’s something”. i get why wyn was added to the plot, but it didn’t feel particularly well integrated. at least imo none of the sex was actually sexy, plus i hate the RH trope of needing to individually engage with each to like add them to the collection before anything can move forward. since our fmc has 5 partners, it dragged the book significantly in the the middle. also not sure why felicity had to be a venandi; maybe if she’d turned out to be an actual enemy it would have been interesting but she wasn’t so it just felt unnecessary. i don’t think ill be reading anymore of the author.

Okay, so I read peoples comments and I have to say, I agree. I loved all of the characters and how different they were from each other, and I really loved Becca.

I just think that after 75% of the book, I was no longer as invested in what was happening. Of course I read the reviews before I finished the book -why, I don’t know- so I was aware of how other people felt as if the second half way unnecessary.

I hate to say it, but I think they’re right. Black could have made the whole rouge plot last a lot longer than it did. There were so many twists or turns she could have taken, but she didn’t. The rouge was there one minute and then poof! His head is now being sent in the mail.

And let’s talk about Wyn. . . I loved Wyn! I adored him! But where in the actual hell did he come from?

I liked how Black added Wyn in there, but couldn’t it have been a little earlier in the book? He came late and therefore I was skeptical about adding him into their little pack, but damn. Otherwise, I loved him as a character. He was awesome and my second favorite after Seth.

It goes Seth, Wyn, Axel, Jasper, and then Cody. Sorry, Cods. You’re all adorable though!

Anyway, so I didn’t finish the entire book. I’m not going to lie about it. But I’m at 87% and I’m counting it as read.

This would have been an amazing 200-300 page book, but I’m not feeling the 400+ pages. If it’s going to be that long, I need a little more. . . Something!

Anyway, this book was good! I did like it, it just could have been better. 🤷🏽‍♀️
