B.J. Daniels started her life in Houston, Texas, before her family moved to Montana at age five. She grew up in a cabin in the Gallatin Canyon near Big Sky and later on Hebgen Lake near West Yellowstone. Because of her love for Montana, most of her books are set there. Born into a storytelling family, all she'd ever wanted to do was write stories. After a career as an award-winning newspaper journalist, she wrote and sold 37 short stories before she finally wrote her first book, ODD MAN OUT. Since then she has won numerous awards including a career achievement award for romantic suspense. She lives in Montana with her husband, Parker, two Springer Spaniels. When she isn't writing, she quilts, boats and. makes rope/fabric baskets. She always reads, loving to lose herself in a good book.
5-I couldn’t put it down stars! ⭐️ Twenty years ago Kate lost her husband to a factory explosion while he was at work. She never got closure and continued to look for him over the years hoping he would find his way home to her and their two daughters. She built a wonderful life over the years, bought a beautiful home, and became financially secure by ghost writing books for others. Finally, she meets a man that she begins to feel comfortable with and when he asks her to marry him she reluctantly accepts. He wants them to celebrate the engagement by taking a small vacation to Canada for a few days. She had never seen snow so she decided to go against her better judgement.
While on their drive up from Houston to Canada they have car trouble and also get caught in a major winter snowstorm and have to stay a few days in a small off-the-beaten-path Montana town. While there, Kate runs into a town carpenter that looks exactly like her dead husband but he doesn't recognize her at all. Is it really him? Why is her fiancée so anxious to get back on the road immediately to Canada? He is acting very strange and angry with her now but Katie is needing answers in order to go on with her life.
It was so easy to become invested in what was going on in Kate’s life. From people turning out to be nothing like she thought they were ... to others turning out to be exactly what she hoped and longed for. Another fantastic BJD book and I'm looking forward to the next book in the series!
4.5 Stars: Out of the Storm is a suspenseful, edge of your seat, mystery and second chance romance. Kate Jackson's husband, Daniel, was declared dead after a refinery explosion twenty years ago. She raised their two daughters as a single mom and is finally ready to begin her life again. She is engaged to Collin and is going on an engagement trip to Canada mixing business, pleasure and wedding plans (they are picking up Kate's wedding dress). When a storm in Montana causes them to hunker down for awhile due to car damage and needing new parts, Kate stumbles upon Jon Harper, a carpenter who she is sure is her husband, Daniel. Collin cannot let this happen, he has things to do and plans for Kate.
This is the first book in the Buckhorn, Montana series and boy, did it pack a punch. There was so much suspense in this story. Throw in someone with amnesia, syndicate members putting a bounty on someone's head, kidnapping, drugs, crossing international boundaries, threatening family and some people with some very interesting government connections and you know that you will be taken on a ride. I was on the edge of my seat while listening to this one and I was not disappointed at any time. The characters are strong, loyal, loving and willing to put their lives on the line for those they love. I was rooting for Kate and Jon from the first time they met and I was happy to see that Collin will get what he deserves. I enjoyed meeting some of the other characters in Buckhorn and am hoping that their stories will be told in future books in this series. The audiobook was narrated by Corey Snow. This is the first time I have listened to a book performed by this narrator. Usually, I find a male voice trying to do female voices awkward, but I had no issues with this book. I thought his expression and tone were used perfectly to give each character an individual voice and add excitement to this story. This is one I definitely recommend if you enjoy second chance, feel good romances with some action and suspense. I was gifted a copy of this book upon request. The rating and opinions shared are my own.
The first book in the Buckhorn, Montana series, Out of the Storm packed a suspenseful punch with secrets, lies, kidnapping, betrayal, and layers of intrigue. The story follows Kate Jackson, a woman who lost her husband Danny in a work explosion. Though twenty years have passed, Kate never lost hope that Danny might be alive somewhere. Everyone told her to move on, but Kate couldn’t and solely focused on raising her daughters. Now, newly engaged and tentatively starting over with her fiancée Collin, Kate is stunned when she sees a man who looks exactly like Danny.
Jon knows that he is not Kate’s long-lost husband, but his past isn’t clear. What secrets is Jon hiding? And why is Collin so insistent that Jon is not Danny and that he and Kate must leave and cross the Canadian border? Jon might not remember all of his past, but he knows that he must do whatever it takes to protect this lovely woman from danger, even if it means revealing who he is.
I really enjoyed this action-packed, emotion-filled romance. The characters are well-developed, especially Kate, who is a devoted mother, a successful writer, and a strong woman. Kate loves her husband, and her unfailing loyalty and devotion to him are powerful. She loved Danny with everything she had, so when she sees a man that she thinks is Danny, you can imagine the reaction.
Dealing with her conflicting emotions about living in the past or looking toward the future, as well as finding out the true motivations of someone close to her, proves difficult and dangerous. Kate is so torn between her love for her first husband and her future with Collin, especially because she feels deep down that Danny is still alive.
The secondary characters are well-layered too. Jon, the quiet and solitary woodworker who might be Danny, is intriguing, and I was fascinated by his story. Several locals prove loyal and indispensable to Jon’s cause, and I’m eager to see some of these hard-working and helpful people of Buckhorn, Montana in future books in the series.
There are many twists and turns in Out of the Storm, which makes for a gripping and intriguing read. Plus, the love story is fantastic! I highly recommend this novel to readers who enjoy contemporary romantic suspense with great characters. Thanks so much to Netgalley, Harlequin, and the author for a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.
Kate was only a teenager when she fell in love with Danny but that didn’t mean that it wasn’t enduring and true. When her husband was believed to have passed away due to a workplace accident she found herself a widow and a single mother to two young children. She picked up the pieces of her life and two decades later is engaged to another man but she has never forgotten her first love.
Collin is Kate’s fiancé and he has arranged a road trip through Montana to Canada to pick up a wedding dress he ordered for her. When they find themselves stranded in Buckhorn, it may be the best thing that could have happened to her, but it is the worst thing that could have happened to him. She believes that one of residents may be her husband but uncovering the truth could have devastating consequences for everyone.
This story takes us on an action packed adventure filled with intrigue, surprises and a love that can overcome anything.
This is my first read of 2021! I got it from Brenda Novak. This is the second year I have followed her book club. She has not steered me wrong.

Well Colon gets made and says he will leave without her!
Out of the Storm is the first book I've read by B. J. Daniels but it won't be the last. The story is a great start to the Buckhorn, Montana series with lots of tension, suspense, and edge-of-the-seat action. And add some romance to the mix and readers who enjoy the suspense-romance genre will not want to miss this one. The characters are strong, realistic and likable (well, the good guys, anyway!). I'm eagerly looking forward to the next book in the series. I listened to a library copy of the audiobook and was not required to write a review. The opinions are my own. Corey Snow did a good job narrating the book which made for an enjoyable listening experience.
Interesting storyline, good characters and side characters, just too much redundancy in the text. A bit predictable with repetition of thoughts and information, but good enough for me to look at future books in the series.
I absolutely loved this book! Ms. Daniels has written the perfect story full of romance, suspense, and beautiful Montana. I am so excited this is first in a series and I cannot wait for my next trip back to Buckhorn, Montana.
I checked this book out of the library to read for an online book club. My honest review is not influenced in any way.
Out of the Storm by B.J. Daniels is a taut suspense about Kate, a 40-year-old woman who has been a widow for 20 years. She’d been unable to establish a new relationship until she met Collin. His persistence and kindness wore down her belief that her husband survived a tragic explosion that killed and injured hundreds. Daniels plants seeds of hope that Danny, Kate’s first love, might still be alive alongside uneasy feelings about Collin. This story’s suspense is riveting and the longing for lost love, heart-breaking. I hated getting to the last page.
I kind of liked this one but there was something off about it. It had a couple of short sex scenes that I skipped. It was like the author was told to write in a little soft porn. The story really didn’t need it. It was written well enough that I wanted to finish it but I doubt I will read any more from this author. Everything was worked out so well in the end, even I couldn’t accept it. I love happy endings but this was too good to be true, even for fiction.

Good start to the new series. It opens as Kate receives a proposal of marriage from the man she dated for the past six months. Although she accepts Collin's ring, she can't help having reservations. Twenty years earlier, Kate lost the love of her life, Danny, in a refinery explosion. His body was never identified, and she always believed that he was still alive, possibly suffering from amnesia. She still looks for his face wherever she goes, hoping that he's alive. Despite those reservations, she accepts Collin's proposal, prepared to finally move on with her life. When Collin springs a surprise engagement trip on her, she quickly loses her enthusiasm for the journey when they break down in the middle of a blizzard. Stranded in the tiny town of Buckhorn while they wait for parts, Kate is stunned when she spots Danny, even though he insists his name is Jon and he doesn't know her.
Kate's life suddenly becomes very complicated. On the one hand, she's sure that Jon is Danny; she just needs to convince him of the fact. On the other hand, she has a fiancé who is not at all happy about this blast from Kate's past. Kate doesn't know that Collin has ulterior motives, both for their engagement and this trip. He won't allow anything to interfere with his plans.
I enjoyed watching the relationship between Kate and Jon develop. She is dead sure that Jon is Danny and spends every possible minute she can with him, telling him stories of their life together, of their two daughters, and their lives since his disappearance. Jon enjoys hearing the stories, and though he wishes otherwise, he is sure that he isn't Danny. He can't tell her the truth about why but he can't deny that he is drawn to her. After a couple of run-ins with Collin, Jon's instincts tell him that the man is dangerous.
This is where the suspense of the story picks up the pace. Kate wants to stay in Buckhorn and spend more time with Jon, but Collin's situation grows more perilous with each day. Desperate to get Kate away from Jon, Collin takes steps that could put a bulls-eye on Jon's back. Meanwhile, Kate's youngest daughter is taken hostage to ensure Kate's cooperation. I liked how Kate kept her head and managed to warn Jon about his danger. Jon gets some unexpected help from his friend, Earl Ray, as he prepares to go after Kate and Collin. I was glued to the pages through the multiple twists until it was all over. The only thing to figure out was how Kate and Jon could be together. I wasn't too surprised by the how, but the process was very complicated. I loved the ending.
I enjoyed the time spent in Buckhorn and look forward to future books in the series. I loved how the entire town got into the relationship between Jon and Kate. The scenes in the café with everyone crowded around the window were fun. My favorite character is Earl Ray, who initially appears to be just your run-of-the-mill mountain town resident. It doesn't take long to discover that there is much more to him, and I can't wait to learn more.
Out of the Storm by BJ Daniels is an interesting book with some different elements. I like BJ Daniels as an author. Her books always catch my attention and I find myself looking forward to them.
Kate Jackson lost her husband over 20 years ago. She pulled up her bootstraps and worked hard to forge a new life for herself and her children. Over the years, she has thought she saw him numerous times, but she finally has decided to move forward. She met Collin and through time became engaged to him. He decided to bring her on an adventure, so she can see snow for the first time, supposedly. In reality - this trip became much more interesting for them.
The rental breaks down in a rundown town called Buckhorn, Montana. Here while they have to wait for the part, Kate runs into a carpenter, who she is sure is her husband. Collin, however as we get further into the mystery, is not who she thinks and up to something.
The main part of the story takes place over a week in time, however in reality, the story is over many years. This felt like a different type of story for BJ Daniels, but I found it interesting and wanted to know the conclusion. Out of the Storm by BJ Daniels was a good read.
This is a romantic suspense book and a western, all in between the pages of a compelling book. It is the story of Kate Jackson who raised her two daughters alone after a terrible explosion on an oil rig took the life of her husband Danny. Kate has always believed that Danny is still alive, but she is trying to move on with her life, even getting engaged to a new man, Collin Matthews. Setting off on an engagement trip to Montana seems adventurous until their SUV breaks down and Kate finds a man named Jon Harper working in a wood shop and is stunned at how much he reminds her of Danny. The story is fast-paced with wonderful descriptions of the Montana scenery and charismatic characters. This is my first ever B.J. Daniels book and I hope to read more in the future. I was excited to find out that there is a second book coming out in March and I hope that Earl Ray and Bessie figure prominently in it, too. Fans of romantic suspense will be enthralled by the story of Kate and Jon and their story of danger and life or death situations. Disclaimer I purchased a copy of this book via the Brenda Novak Book Box subscription program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions expressed are my own.
Kate Jackson lost her husband, Danny Jackson, twenty years ago in an explosion at an oil refinery. Now, she's engaged and finally moving on. However, while on an engagement trip with her new fiancé Collin, Kate sees a man who looks just like Danny but he says his name is Jon.
This is my first B.J. Daniels book, so I didn't realise this was in the genre of suspense-romance before I started reading. It's actually a complicated and suspenseful mystery. It's very compelling and I was completely sucked in. I noticed that it's the first in the series about Buckhorn, Montana and I hope Kate is mentioned again in the future books. I would really like to check in with her.
I did find it hard to connect with Kate. Kate's decades-long obsession with Danny eclipsed any interest she had in her fiancé or even her two children who are very much afterthoughts. I also felt that it was slightly overlong at 305 pages and a little inconsistent (I did read an an advanced copy though!).
Thank you to Edelweiss and Harlequin for providing me with an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Kate lost her husband to a tragic work accident twenty years ago. She’s raised two daughters and is now going to settle down with her new fiancé, but first he surprise trip to Montana to “see snow”, or so he says. Everything about this trip is off, and as the reader we know that her fiancé, Collin has ulterior motives, but we won’t find out what those are until at least halfway through the book. While in Montana, their old rental SUV breaks down in tiny town of Buckhorn and they’re stranded until it can be repaired. While there, Kate stumbles upon carpenter, Jon, who she swears is her deceased husband. Determined to find the truth, she sticks around, in opposition to her fiancé’s wishes, and unlocking some crazy twists and turns in the process.
This book has a pretty good plot. Based on the cover, I expected more romance, but it was surprisingly sparce, other than Kate’s “love” for her current fiancé and her deceased husband. There is a couple pages of descriptive sex, but that’s about it. I think there was some language, but it was far and few between. The plot outline was great and the twists worked well with the storyline. We watch Kate get some grit and stand her ground as the story unfolds.
However, this book could have been 75-100 pages shorter. It’s not very long to begin with, (my kindle clocked it at 245 pages), but there was a lot of repetition in Kate’s feelings for her current fiancé, her dead husband, the town they’re stranded in, what Collin could be really up to. She also tended to use both the first and last names when speaking about some of the characters, especially Jon Harper. Halfway through the book, when we are reading more about Jon, the author starts calling Collin (the fiancé) by his surname which threw me for a major loop. I wish she would have stuck with his first name. I kind of get why she did it, and I don’t want to explain more without having a spoiler, but it did throw off the flow of the book for me.
Also, it’s called a magazine, not a clip. This happens a lot in books. A magazine holds the ammo and goes into the gun. A clip is a thing…it can speed load a magazine. But the clip does not go into the gun. When I see this, I mentally cringe every time.
There also was some editing issuing. Twice I found sentences that made absolutely no sense because of the wrong word in the sentence or an extra word randomly in the middle of the sentence. I don’t typically catch editing errors, but those two stuck out to me.
All in all, I give this book 3 stars because of the basic plot line. This is the first book in a series but the next book follows some difference characters in Buckhorn, Montana and I’m not sure yet if I’ll continue on.
Out of the Storm by BJ Daniels Kindle Read 1/1/21-1/6/21 Three stars
This was definitely something different and beyond the normal cookie-cutter romance!
There were a bunch of twists and thrills that had my anxiety riding on a teeter-totter. Kate was a bit obsessed to the point it seemed over the top over finding her dead husband especially after 20 years...but for some reason it really worked in this story.
I kept asking myself why the hell her fiance would put up with her actions...and then...bam...it all came together!
Katie was left a very young widow with 2 babies after her husband was killed in a mine accident She finally thinks she has let go and agrees to marry a man and go on a trip to Canada with him. Their car breaks down in a small town and she sees a man she is sure is her first husband. She has to find out the truth and what is the real reason they were going to Canada.
First book of the series, and first book I’ve read by Ms Daniels...WOW! This is a page turner with many twists I wasn't expecting. The characters are very realistic. Being from Montana and having spent time in northeast Montana I know the towns are small, and the descriptions of Buckhorn are spot on. It would definitely be a good place to hide from “the mob”. I am excited to read the next book in this series, which I’ve already ordered. If you are looking for a good suspenseful mystery, with a little romance, this would be a good book to read.
Really a 4.5 for me , I’m a pushover, when I enjoy a book I rate them high! Such a Great love story! Easy and heartfelt good read! Kept me interested...and loved that the author lives in Montana so the description of snow and the weather is true from experience. Follow @brendanovak , her BOOKCLUB read for January!
This is a contemporary romantic suspense in which Kate Jackson has finally agreed to marry her persistent ‘boyfriend’, Collin, deciding to take a chance again, after twenty years of waiting for her beloved husband, Daniel, to return. Daniel was declared dead after being involved in a huge refinery explosion but she’s never believed it. Collin takes her on a special engagement trip to let her see and feel snow for the first time but their vehicle breaks down and they end up staying in Buckhorn, Montana. Whilst there she meets Jon Harper and she’s convinced this quiet, reticent carpenter is her Danny. Jon isn’t convinced by her – and neither is Collin. However, the situation dramatically changes Collin’s attitudes and actions . . . Should she stay with Collin or take a chance on Jon?
This is a suspense filled story, packed with mystery, intrigue, secrets and lies. It is fraught with double dealing and danger skilfully mixed with a heartwarming romance. The story is a roller coaster ride, full of twists and turns to keep you guessing. The main setting of Buckhorn is brilliantly portrayed and there are some superb secondary characters, other potential romances and a real sense of community. This is the first story in a new series set in Buckthorn and I can’t wait to return there again.
Thanks to Harlequin and NetGalley for my copy of this book which I voluntarily read and have honestly reviewed.
My first book by the author and I enjoyed it! The characters were all perfectly written for their parts and had nice development. I don't think this couple will show up in the series again but I will definitely be reading more about this town!
I loved this book! After 20 years, she still believed her husband was alive. She kept seeing him in other people. I’m so glad with how it ended. Now to wait for the next one.

This book had twists and turns. Wasnt sure what the outcome would be. Hoping for a happy ending. It kept me engaged for the whole book. Can't wait for more books!!
A nice romantic suspense that moved at a decent clip. This is the first book I've read by this author, and I felt the plot did not seem formulaic and had a few interesting characters. . . Collin for one, Earl Ray, and Jon. Kate was ho-hum. For a seemingly smart person, it was a bit hard to see how she was so easily taken in. The author had some nice descriptions of Montana. I'll check out the second book and see how it goes.
This book was for a club read. Not one I would have picked up myself but so glad I found a new author. It centers around Kate who lost her husband in a refinery explosion 20 years before. But since the body was never found, Kate still believes he is out there somewhere – possibly with amnesia. She refuses to move on. That is until she meets a new man who takes her on a trip to celebrate their engagement. Their car breaks down in Buckhorn, Montana and it there that Kate sees someone who looks like her husband Danny….but the man insists he is not.
Loved this story, part romance (do we ever forget our true love?) and part intrigue. Things get a bit crazy half way through the book with some danger thrown in. This is book 1 of 3 and I will definitely be looking forward to continuing this series.
