Stormy Morgan thought coming home to Shadow Hills would break her. Instead, she’s found strength, and only part of it is because she’s discovered that she’s a witch. Now, with her great-grandmother coming to town, she’s finally in line for some answers. Now she just has to solve a pesky little murder before she’s free to cast and curse.

Following their first date, a quiet outing for pizza and romance, Stormy and her boyfriend Hunter Ryan discover that the owner Giovanni Rossi was gunned down in his parking lot sometime during the overnight hours. To make matters worse, Stormy believes she dreamed of the murder before finding out about it, which throws everybody for a loop.

Even though Hunter would prefer Stormy focus on her great-grandmother, he’s resigned to the fact that she can’t turn away from the investigation. Together, they start digging… and discover some disturbing clues involving various community members.

Stormy’s magic is evolving, almost on a daily basis, and it’s only outpaced by her curiosity. Once faced with a mystery, she can’t look away, and those who love her most will be dragged along for the ride.

Strap in, because as Stormy learns more about what she can do – with a little help from the Winchesters from Hemlock Cove – she’ll become a force to be reckoned with. She just has to survive long enough to reach her full potential… and that’s easier said than done.

This book felt really thin on the plot side. I got the impression that I was supposed to delve deep into the happenings of Stormy's and Hunter's relationship and sort of forget about everything else.

Ehh, sorry, but that didn't work for me.

I get that there's a whole other bunch of witches in Hemlock Grove Cove and that they probably have their own book series going, but I feel like they are intruding in this one. It's not really a cross-over, it's more like an invasion.

They take up so much space and time that there's not much left for Stormy to evolve on her own as a character and have her own life and development in her own town.
There are too many characters. Too many other storylines that are hinted at, but that plays no part in this series what so ever.

By the way: Why make up resolutions and ways to handle things with your boyfriend when you can just ask the witch and FBI agent in the next town over how they handle things and then copy what they're doing?
I don't know... This just rubbed me in all the wrong ways possible. I felt like I had tuned into some day-time soap-opera instead of a mystery when so much time was spent on talking about how one manages a witch+normie relationship. Utter snooze fest.

The actual mystery itself was ok. Nothing more, nothing less. The murderer turned out to be a full-fledged psychopath, which I guess ... meant absolutely nothing at all since more time had been spent on discussions about domestic situations between witches and law-enforcement officers than, you know, any murders and serious sleuthing happening.

Also Alice. Can someone please hit her over the head with something for me? She's just so annoying. I don't get why anyone, family or not, puts up with her. It doesn't make sense. It's not like she's at least useful for something. Unless you count bear bait, or something, I don't know...

Sebastian seems like the seed of a great gay best friend, but he's also the stereotypical gay best friend. He has almost no other character traits and that's because there's no real room for him in the series. It's too crowded!

Stormy's granddad continues to be headstrong and amusing in all his quirky ways, but also quite high up on the annoying scale. Great grandma showing up made things a little bit funnier, but then again, she's also just a minor character that's given zero development while being forced out of focus and frame ever so quickly to make room for some Stormy and Hunter drama.

Like arguing at length about a coffee maker.
Yeah. That's totally what I want a cosy mystery to spend time on. Suuuuuuuure. #irony

Ok, fine, I like that Stormy is all feminist and sticks up for herself, but she's also very, very pigheaded and proud and unwilling to accept help which makes me so frustrated with her.

I think I'll give the 4th book a chance as well, but if that doesn't shape up into something more interesting I might drop out of this series.

The ending with the cat was ... rather random.
Sure, I had suspected something must happen with that kitty sooner or later, because why else is it even in the books, but oh my was that handled weirdly.

it was sort of a book

Yep, that’s about all I can say about this one. It was boring, flat and undeserving of praise.

I was really hoping the introduction of the great-grandmother would have helped the series along. It did not. There was barely any fire in her. She suddenly has someone in her family that got the witch genes, and what does she do, pretty much nothing. She tells her that the local Winchester family of witches might be able to help but is more involved in getting drunk off their wine, in place of helping her own family member. Okay, let her get drunk, but can’t she help too.

The Cozy mystery for this book was such a let down. There was no mystery, the author wrote things so it was obvious who the murderer was almost from the start. The reasoning behind the killing was horrendous on top of things. Murder is always horrible, but this sociopath was just vile. His victim wasn’t much better.

Then the author creates a sub-plot where a local woman blackmails a gay man for cash, otherwise she will out him. That illegal activity will likely not be addressed, or if it is in the next book, Phoebe won’t be charged because Lorenzo doesn’t want to press charges. Doubtful they will even make her pay back the money she’s been getting for a year! Anyone should be able come out in their own time, but to think another person would use this information as blackmail is disgusting. How about the town just band together and force Phoebe out of town. The author is giving small towns a bad reputation by even insinuating that any portion of this story could be normalized in a community.

Then in the last few pages, Big Surprise! (yes that’s sarcasm!), when she finally decides to name the found kitten, it starts to talk and gives her his own name. Like anyone didn’t see that coming. Even if it wasn’t that he’s somehow a gnome and cat-shifter, familiars and witches have a long standing tradition and it’s common for a witch to hear and talk to their familiar. Of course since she was being called a hellcat over the three books, is it really surprising, a suddenly found kitten wasn’t going to be special.

The author needs to work on her editing, or actually write her own books. She has so many series under various author names, even using the formulaic process she’s developed, it’s unlikely she is writing all of these herself. I guess if she wants to lower her standards and let everyone think she writes crap, that is her choice. Maybe pay for better editing though at the very least. In the last book she states that the main lead was in credit card debt around $800, then in this book she’s suddenly saying she didn’t say the amount previously but it’s now around $5,000. Yet she is constantly commenting on how careful she needs to be about money and wants to pay everything off quickly. Also during different moments, her grandfather is letting her stay in the apartment free of charge for one month, but then in another section it’s for several months, and then it changes again further on. Be consistent! I am barely paying attention to the story, as it’s so bad, yet I keep picking up many editing story errors and plot holes. Someone who is struggling financially is not going to shell out for frappy mocha whatevers as often as the lead does, when at the same time she complains that money is tight. Yes, she deserves to have one occasion, but it seems more like she has one at least once a day or more. It doesn’t seem likely if she actually cares as much about her finances as she states.

Finally, is she going to make anything stand out in Hunter and Stormy’s relationship. Even having them talking with Landon and Bay from the Winchester series, it’s obvious they are a bad facsimile of these two. Now they go around suddenly saying Compromise like they’ve solved world hunger. No, they may have just finally grown up, got an f’ing clue and might possibly have stopped being so damned annoying to everyone else. Oh wait, no, they haven’t figured any of that out, they just say stupid crap, think it’s incite full and then continue to do whatever it is they wanted to do in the first place. Of course continuing to be as annoying as possible, because the author thinks that’s cutesy and somehow a good relationship.

There is one more book in this series that is already completed. For some stupid reason I am going to read it. If it sucks as much as these have, I’m done with the author. I may only support her via using the Kindle Unlimited app, but even that might be gone in the near future, when all she writes is derivative and contrived prose with reused storylines between each of the series. Be better!!

Extraordinarily entertaining supernatural cozy mystery series

This is an extraordinarily entertaining supernatural cozy mystery series. An outstanding cast of characters in an irritating storyline. Stormy grew up in a small Podunk town and could not wait to get out of it. She had a boyfriend all through hi school and they broke up when she went off to college. He stayed home. After college she end up writing I hit book and seem to be on her way to fame and fortune. Her first book so very well she made lots of money and spent it accordingly. Her second book however was a flop and her publisher dropped her in the spiral began. After several years of trying to write another book and find her way she eventually end up back in the small town where she started.
She had to get a job back working at the family restaurant and lived in a small apartment upstairs. Then one day playing with a Ouija board with her cousin something happened and soon as she started having things happen around her. She soon finds out that she is actually a witch. Everything else you’re going to have to read on to find out. This is the third book in the story and it is a very entertaining story at that. This town is only a couple towns away from Hemlock Cove where the Winchester family lives. There have already been a couple interactions with some of the Winchester clan and as always it is entertaining fun and who doesn’t get enough of Aunt Tilly and the young cousins. Check it out you will not be disappointed.

I enjoyed this addition to the series. It's my favorite thus far!

I am shocked that I've fallen in love with this series so fast. It's not usually my type of thing. This is a great series to read to get out of a book slump. A book slump happens when I have read so many dense, heavy-subject novels. A Little Slice of Death is light and easy to read. I think the greatest strength of this novel that I enjoyed the most was how the characters were nuanced. I'm not sure where Lee is leading the plot, but I thoroughly enjoyed the characters. Even though I loved this story, I can see how some readers may think it too light. But it was just what I needed to turn my brain off.

As I've stated in a previous review of book 1: I started this series thinking there would be more magic and mystery - but these elements were more like background noise. So maybe this is more of cozy contemporary fiction instead? Could even be romance. Either way, if you temper expectations (i.e., an easy read that does not have much mystery or magic), I think the books in this series are great reads when you need some much-needed R&R.

Quality of Writing 9/10
Pace 10/10
Plot 7/10
Characters 9/10
Enjoyability 10/10
Insightfulness 8/10
Ease of reading 10/10

Another murder 8n Shadow Hills and the cat finally gets a name.

Stormy is finally learning a bit about her witch powers thanks to help from the Winchesters who live in the next town, Bay and Landon especially are becoming good friends, Aunt Tillie ——-as usual—— is a menace and she’s joined in this book by Stormy’s great grandmother. Hunter and Stormy are finally dating —— officially—— and things are going well when one night Stormy has a weird dream in which she sees a murder happen. On waking next day she finds out the murder actually happened just the way she dreamed it. Hunter would like if she left the investigation to him but Stormy feels compelled to look into it herself, something which causes no end of bother. This is the third in the series and the characters are now well established my favourite is Stormys grandfather sort of a male Aunt Tillie and theres a shocker at the end you will not see coming which bodes well for the next book.

Repetitious & Slow

The first book in the series was slow but I outdo relate to the regional, small town ridiculousness and ambience that often reminded me of my youth growing up in such a place. So I excused the pace and looked forward to more action and better plot twists as the books progressed. They got slower with conversations harping on the same situation over and over and frankly, the only character I really liked was the acerbic Grandpa. The more I read the more I dislike Stormy, the lead female character. I like heroines with self-confidance or who become that way, a strong woman is willing to accept help as needed, is disciplined enough to keep her mouth shut when needed, doesn’t need compliments to feel better about herself (though they are always welcomed) explores her newfound abilities with awe and glee instead of trepidation and fear..and on and on. Did I mention I hate figuring out the murderer before the heroine does..

Just ok. There were multiple repetitive conversations. To the point that I had to confirm I wasn't reading the same page over again (e-book). Stormy needs help figuring out her new powers, but it seems most people that should be able to help - hello Winchesters and Gr-Grandma - are either clueless or trying to push her in the metaphorical pool to learn to swim. It was frustrating. Lots of play off on Bay and Landon's relationship with the developing relationship between Stormy and Hunter in this book. Not always something that is my favorite thing. Sometimes it's just too smarmy. Definitely was able to discern the killer before the reveal however the reasoning behind the murder was creative - if not a little sick. Phoebe's actions should soon get some negative reactions based on what was learned. The ending with the kitten was a huge stretch and quite truthfully pretty creepy.

Five stars

I seldom give five stars, however, Amanda M. Lee deserves it. Having worked amongst first responders my entire career, I learned to appreciate the snark! I love all of the series that Ms Lee has written. She lifts my spirits with her books.
Since Aunt Tillie is one of my favorite characters, I enjoy the visits to Hemlock Cove. This book should have you laughing out loud often! It was well written and well edited. No foul language or vivid love scenes, which prove that a good romantic or mystery series should rely on substance, not smut. Well done, Amanda Lee.

At least we know the cat's name

It's good to see the mysteries pile up. The cold case of the previous senior center organizer, how did extra magic get in Stormy 's blood line , why is Phoebe so cross about the lines, or is she like that to everyone? How well can you live on $3000 a month in northern Michigan? How long will it take for Stormy to learn to harness and direct her powers? Why do any of these women seem to have heard of divination, much less do it? Why doesn't the potential seem to manifest in men? These questions indicate that the series could go on for years. I'm OK with that.

Murder, theft and blackmail.

Stormy has her first official date with Hunter at the pizza parlor but when he goes all gentlemanly and says goodnight on the doorstep she's slightly confused. A restless night ensues with a weird dream about a shooting.. but is it a dream? When Hunter mentions that Giovanni died after closing up the restaurant Stormy can't help but wonder if the dream was a premonition and ropes Alice in to go check out the scene of the crime after hours. Stormy's uncontrollable magic leads her to the weapon and then she's on a mission to help Hunter solve the murder whether he wants her to or not.

Finally! I’ve wanted her to name that darned cat got so long. I’ve also been waiting for him to talk, but wasn’t sure if he could actually talk.

As for Phoebe, Stormy has powers and when Phoebe is up in Stormy’s face she does nothing. I’d be manifesting my power and burning her or doing something…anything to fight back. Geesh it’s frustrating.

I know Stormy is new with her magic, but she’s not doing anything to discover just how powerful she is. Hopefully the…kranky…kitten becomes a sort of mentor to her. In this book she only used her magic less than a handful of times. Disappointing.

Next book is Follow the Crumbs (A Two Broomsticks Gas & Grill Witch Cozy Mystery Book 4)

I've read all three of these books and thoroughly enjoyed them. I especially like the protagonist's family and the town itself. Come on in and enjoy the screwball ambiance!

This series is very entertaining and has a distinct oddball charm. The characters are varied and interesting and while some are adorable, others are just horrible. Some somehow manage to be both. I'm totally hooked and can't wait for the author to continue the series and I hope there will be a new book soon.

Surprise reveals aplenty!

Well, this was fun! The mystery is nicely convoluted; no sooner does the reader get on the right track but a well-placed misdirect appears to divert attention. Poor Stormy finally has a worthwhile, supportive family member in her corner...and now she may become a hostage in her own home! Thank goodness for the Winchesters, Hunter, and Sebastian! I say she ditches that apartment and job, which rids her of family (and Krankle) manipulation, and moves in with Hunter. Can't wait for what's next!

Stormy is still working for her grandfather and dating Hunter. Her great grandmother is coming to visit and hopefully will supply some answers. After an official date at the local pizza shop the owner is found shot to death outside the building and the day’s deposits are missing. Who would want to kill the nice old man? And then town secrets start to come out. Story is the perfect person to learn them and pass them on to her law enforcement boy friend. I did figure out who the killer was early on but the motive was a surprise.

It's OK...But Grandpa Gets All the Stars

This one wasn't quite as good as the others. For one, Stormy kinda got on my nerves a lot more in this one. For another, the murder mystery wasn't as engaging to me. (After you've had old ladies poisoning people over euchre, you've set a standard.) The only really interesting thing (to me, anyway) happens at the very end of the book. It was still pretty good, and Grandpa's snark goes a long way for me as far as ratings go.

Onward and yon-ward (yes, I got that from Nature Cat).

A Little Slice of Death by Amanda M. Lee
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Much like with everything Amanda writes, I highly enjoyed this book. I really like this series, and I like that it ties into the Wicked Witches of the Midwest series. My only complaint is that it feels like all the characters in Shadow Hills have the same personality as the characters in Hemlock Cove, it doesn’t feel like anyone necessarily has their own personality. That doesn’t really bother me too much though, bc I really like both series and all the characters funny quirks and manners of speaking, especially the healthy dose of sarcasm everyone has. I like getting to see Stormy beginning to come more into her own and accepting being back home, developing her investigative skills. I’d like to see her use and better understand her magic more, and I’m helpful that will be coming in the next book based on the small cliffhanger/twist at the end of this one.

Stormy Lives Up to Her Name

Poor Stormy just doesn’t know how to mind her own business, which is a good thing, otherwise we wouldn’t have a story. This time, the owner of a local pizza restaurant has been murdered. Stormy dreamed of his murder, and is determined to solve the case. To make things better, her witchy great grandmother is back in town to help. Amanda M. Lee never disappoints; another must read!

Keeps getting better.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. This might just be the best of the series so far. With help from the Winchesters, Stormy is starting to grow into her powers. Things are advancing with Hunter. And a killer is on the loose. The clues are minimal, but Stormy is relentless. The story and characters were intriguing and engaging. I look forward to reading more about these characters and their further adventures. This book is definitely worth reading.

Oh , my! Great story, plot twists, surprise ending!

I love all of her series - some a bit more than others. This book has more depth and breadth than her other books. A lot of quality effort and energy went into this one, and it has paid off. I don’t mind the usual formulaic approach to her writing, but this raises the bar! Looking forward to more, in the standard format, or this new one!

Again this Author delivers a good addition to her series. I really enjoy the crossovers and mingling of her characters from her different series! The residents ring true for a small town and I love the interactions between them all. Stormy is learning her abilities and about her relationship. A great ending as well, I love her kitten! I highly recommend this series and this Author’s other series as well.

Stormy is great!

I really enjoyed this book and I love the Winchester's and helping her become a better witch. I truly can't wait to see where her story goes. I wish Hunter had a different name though. I am a big fan of all of the AML and LHH series and when she uses names over again I get a little lost. All together it is turing out to be a great journey and Stormy is wonderful.

Too much....yet, there's something missing. Should be really good, but the characters, a couple of them at least, never seem to stop with the smart, cute, wise-cracking, snarky remarks. The gay guy who isn't out yet, is childish...he pouts when his ' bestie' doesn't include him in EVERYTHING she does....The witch in the neighboring village is way over the top...old, and probably senile. It's just too much.

Favorite in series

I really enjoyed this installment of the series. I laughed a lot. Hunter and Stormi get closer. EX.'s can be a real problem. I love Sebastian, he's like the little devil on Stormi's shoulder. Her powers are growing and I can't wait to see where this series leads. Highly recommend.

Stormy The Spy?

Stormy goes out with Hunter on a date to a local pizza shop. After they leave the owner of the shop is killed. Stormy dreams about it and is obsessed with finding the killer.

Plenty of magic, awkward moments, snark and some interaction with the Hemlock Cove characters.

Eagerly awaiting the next book!

Great Storyline With A Very Interesting Ending!

I love how Stormy is growing in her powers. The storyline was interesting from the very start and I couldn't put it down. I figured out who the killer was but only because of certain things and whoa that ending!!!! I can't wait for the next book based on that ending alone!!!

This was great

This mystery was interesting and a little bit difficult to settle on the murderer. With that being said, having the Winchesters involved was great. Love reading about them. The ending I did not see coming and now I am sitting on the edge of my seat wanting to know what happens next for Stormy but I have to wait for the next book unfortunately!

This series has been building with great characters and fun crossover energy. It just jumped to the top of list (the good list) with few snarky cmments.. No spoilers, but things get really interesting here and now I am excited for the next part of Stormy's story.

Love this series!

I absolutely love reading about a paranormal coming into their power and Amanda M. Lee doesn't disappoint. This story was filled with good and bad, murder and mystery, love and laughter, with a bit of Amanda's signature snark thrown in. There are also a few interactions with the Winchester witches!
