An ancient curse seems to be causing bad luck in the charming village of Ballydehag, Ireland—witch Quinn Callahan’s new home. When someone is murdered is it the curse? Or is there a very human murderer on the loose? Moving to a small Irish village was supposed to keep the middle-aged witch out of trouble. Yeah, that didn't happen. Quinn and her bookish vampires must find the real killer and end the curse before someone else dies.

I'm in love with this series! The main character, a strong, intelligent middle-aged woman and her supporting cast of witty, intelligent people are wrapped in a well developed and well thought out plot that will keep you guessing! The cast of potential killers is intriguing including a demented ghost, but the twists and turns of the story line will have you excitedly turning pages to see who the real killer is! If you haven't started reading this series yet, you absolutely should! This series is brand new with a fresh spin to a paranormal cozy mystery to have you delightedly entranced in murder! The audio is outstanding as the narrator captures the characters and brings them to life for you quite excellently! I can't wait to listen to the next book in this series!
AVR: I like the plot in this one. It wasn’t exactly clear who the murderer was or even why. And the addition of a local legend makes for an even more interesting story.
Bea: This story was much tighter than the first one, more focused on the mystery and on character building. The local legend adds quite a bit of color to the story and identity of the murder was a guessing game. I did not see it coming. All the details came together nicely and we get a hint of politics and possible treachery.
AVR: I agree. I forgot about the hint of politics and treachery. Good call on that. Hopefully that will get expanded upon in future stories.
Characters
AVR: The characters are coming together. I was worried in book 1 that the town would be too tiny to make for a decent long running series, but I’m beginning to think it’ll work. At least for a while anyway. I think adding Biddy O’Donnell may be the key to some serious future shenanigans. She’s a very interesting character and I hope she doesn’t just fizzle out.
Bea: To be honest, I'm still worried about the town being too tiny for a source of multiple murders or a long-running series but so far, Warren is handling it. I liked that fallout from events in the first book weren't swept under the rug but were realistically dealt with. Quinn's rather dramatic antics in the first book left her with some uncomfortable relationships with people in town and now she has to deal with that. I was apprehensive at first when Biddy O'Donnell was introduced but by the end of the story I was warming up to her and her potential as a long-running character.
AVR: Oh, yes! The fallout from book 1 is definitely touched upon and well-deserved, too. But Quinn is handling it which I like. I’m kinda hoping the author adds a few characters here and there as the series goes on thus alleviating the very tiny town being able to carry a cozy murder series. A B&B would certainly help to do that.
World Building
AVR: There’s a bit more description of the world, but not as much as the building of the characters. Which is ok by me. I really like that this series seems to be focusing more on the witchy magic stuff than the Vampire Knitting Club series.
Bea: I actually felt there was a pretty good balance between the actual world building and the character exploration and growth. I like how Quinn balances both magic and basic investigative skills to solve murders and mysteries and I like that she makes mistakes. She's an amateur detective and it shows. Luckily, she has a crew of vampires ready and willing to help, as well as some human accomplices.
AVR: I agree Quinn is an amateur detective, but she seems to do it in a not so in your face nosy kind of way which is refreshing. And I love the vampires helping with investigations. How exciting for them! I mean, living a long life might get a bit boring after a while.
Overall
AVR: I think this is a much tighter book than book 1 and that may be because book 1’s usually bear the brunt of introduction. The writing is fast and smooth and keeps the pages turning. The murder mystery kept me guessing and Biddy O’Donnell’s story arc is fascinating. I’m looking forward to the next book.
Bea: I agree, this book was tighter; it seems like the author has found her rhythm with this series. I'm optimistic about the future of the series and looking to the next book.
Chapter and Curse by Nancy Warren is the second book in her Vampire Book Club series. The characters are developing well and Quinn makes a determined protagonist as she sifts through the clues to solve another murder. It was another engaging and delightful easy read.
Though not a complex story it was quite engaging. I enjoyed the twists and turns. And dare I say, there may be the start of a romance??? I’ve already downloaded the next in the series.
"Being from the outside makes you different. Being single makes you different"
Seattleite Quinn Callahan is currently living and working in Ballydehag, Ireland where she was "banished to" after a "situation" involving magic. You see, Quinn is a witch.
When William O'Donnell dies, his wake is held in his home, as was the tradition in this small town. His daughter, Brenda, is holding it together, barely, and quickly begins the process of clearing out the old Georgian home where she had once lived. Quinn agrees to dispose of the collection of books for her, and in doing so, finds in amongst the dross, a few books she returns to Brenda...or tried to. Brenda has been hurt and the result is her death. And Quinn and the Vampire Book Club set out to find out what really happened.
Nancy Warren has written a fantastic sequel to her first Vampire Book Club. We're learning more of the reasons behind Quinn's coming to Ballydehag and the twists in this novel kept my reading almost entirely in one sitting. Highly recommended 5/5
[disclaimer: I received this book from the author and chose to read and review it]
Excellent pace, wonderful story and a very good mystery. I enjoyed this second book in this series. We find out a lot more about Quinn and her background in this story. I enjoyed the history. I also liked the developments with an ancient witch who turns out to be related to Quinn. I liked almost everything about this book and will continue reading this series. The only thing I didn't like was that the Vampire Book Club has almost no role in this story. They are basically relegated to a minor character. I really missed Lochlan. However, it looks like the next book may be more centered on the vampires so I am looking forward to that.
I'm really enjoying this series. I love the characters that we're slowly getting to know in the little Irish village . I'm really looking forward to the next book it the series and seeing what happens next.
2020 bk 280. The second in Warren's newest 'witch' series. Set in Ireland, American Quinn Callahan, finds herself in another mystery when a ghost appears in a mirror while she is attending a wake. Turns out the ghost isn't a ghost but a hag and a witch and a many times great-grandmother of Quinn's and a woman who wants to rule the roost again. In the midst of battling Grannie for control, Quinn finds herself trying to solve the murder of a woman who might have become her friend and almost loses the friendship of the woman who didn't do it. Pretty well crafted, but I do prefer the Vampire Knitting Club just a little bit more than this series. And the Vampire Book Club - what a way to make a reader blush - compliments from Oscar Wilde himself!
I really enjoyed this book. We get more insight in the main characters and the people living in the village. There is another murder and I had no idea who the killer was and why it happend.
There is also the beginning of a new more continious story to the history and the why Quinn was sent to this specfic location.
I really enjoyed this little mystery. Nancy Warren's books have been nice mysteries with humour and magic as a little extra spice on the side. In this one however the magic was much more at the forefront and was handled with just the right balance of creepiness and humour that I could enjoy the nerves while being totally relaxed that it was all going to turn out alright.
The literary equivalent of watching the rain outside while enjoying a nice warm tea by the fire.
Good simple addition to the series. The murderer was a surprise! Several parallel mysteries to solve, the local legend reveals a family connection to Quinn and some more insight into her powers. The Vampire Book Club was largely missing from this book which since it’s the VAMPIRE BOOK CLUB series it would be nice if they played more of an active role in the investigations.
not much of importance in this book it almost put me to sleep tbh. i do like nancys cozy mysteries but this one was below expectations sitting at 2.5 star listen
As I said with the first book in this series, this delivers exactly what you expect it to. Still very similar in execution to Nancy Warren's other series "The Vampire Knitting Club." It was delightful all the same and the mystery portion of this cozy mystery was well thought out as well.
The MC for this series is akin to Lucy early on from Vampire Knitting Club only that she's middle-aged and is supposed to actually be a witch. While Lucy could get away with a number of things due to ignorance of witchcraft, some of the MC's actions seem very clueless; she comes across as exceedingly dense if not an imbecile. Add to that, that she's extremely judgmental, rude, has zero qualms about accusing people of murder despite having no evidence, is a gossip, and a panicky drama queen makes her a rather annoying and unpleasant character and it makes for a rather grating book to try to get through.
On top of this, I found the concept of
I almost DNFed this one twice. I think part of the issue was the audiobook version. I found the narration to be decidedly snide and snarky which added to a very negative impression of the MC. As it is, I won't be following this series any further which is a shame since overall, I quite enjoyed Vampire Knitting Club.
𝑪𝒉𝒂𝒑𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑪𝒖𝒓𝒔𝒆, Book #2 in the Vampire Book Club series by Nancy Warren
Warren is building a very nice series which, while occasionally crossing into the Vampire Knitting Club universe, is beginning to be a solid world of its own. Interestingly, while the first book contained an appearance by the head vampire from Knitting Club, Rafe, the head vampire from the Book Club, Lochlan, appeared in the last book of the Knitting Club, and, with this #2 book of this series, moved into the spot for the Book Club that is occupied by Rafe in the Knitting Club series. So, familiar character lines in the two series, yet each is definitely a stand alone series.
Wonderful pacing and flow, a dandy plot that keeps the reader guessing till almost the end as to whodunit, plenty of action, not cliffhanger ending, and very good proofing and editing. I did find one proofing error, just before the end of the book, but it was the only one, so I'm letting in slide.
Quinn, Lochlan and the rest of the cast of characters are looking into the death of a woman who has returned home after her father's death. Quinn had gone to the father's wake on the advice of her friend, the owner of the local old treasures store, in order to learn more about Irish customs, and the other residents of her new town. While there she stumbles on the ghost at the father's home, and a local legend that may very well explain the ghost's presence and why it made itself known to her. When the deceased man's daughter is killed a day or so later, Brenda's curiosity bubbles over and she finds herself in the middle of another murder investigation and its aftermath.
Quinn (I'm going to name my next kitty that name) finds herself following local tradition & attending a wake for Billy O'Donnell staged in his rambling house. His lawyer only child, Brenda, is done from Dublin. After stepping out for fresh air, Quinn sees Brenda having words with a young man she's refusing entry to the house. The next day, as she passes the ancient, gigantic & very magical yew tree getting trimmed, she picks up a branch from the tree for a future wand. She's learned of the saga of evil witch Biddy O'Donnell being hung then buried for centuries, kept there by the magic of the yew. However, trimming the tree has lessened it's power to keep thon witch buried. But at the moment, there's a more pressing mattter. Whilst clearing out her father's old treasures & trash Brenda has been bashed by a candlestick. She is found by Quinn, then transported to hospital but doesn't survive. So now Quinn won't rest till justice is done. Discovering Biddy has indeed escaped & is her several time great gran as well, Quinn has her hands full. All is not lost as Lochlan & the Vampire Book Club are more than ready to help. I' read all of the published Vampire Knitting Club, Vampire Book Club & The Great British Baking Show Contest. Looking forward to new stories in each. Thank you for putting them in KU, but I do occasionally buy boxset if they're no more than $2.99
Iv was not expecting the murderer to be who it ended up being and the motive for it was nuts too. Poor Brenda really didn't know what she had in front of her. In her haste to get out of town she was just going to give everything away or toss it because she thought it was junk. If only she'd taken the time to really go through things. Still, it wasn't her fault and it's not uncommon for anyone grieving to behave the way she was.
I thought the murderer was going to be one of her ex boyfriend's, Jack would've been too easy to suspect, given his history. I thought for sure it was the guy from Dublin. Never did suspect the person it did end up being.
I'm seeing more attachment/concern from Lochlan towards Quinn and it's really sexy, lol. I like that he's always willing to help out and listen to her. He clearly has some affection for her already.
I really appreciate how strong and capable Quinn is. She does own up to her mistakes and apologizes freely when she makes them, if allowed. Poor Kate has been accused of murder twice by Quinn and it's still willing to be friends. That, I think, is my only criticism so far of Quinn. She's quick to accuse before getting all the facts or most of the facts. She needs to look into things from all perspectives not just the one she thinks is right.

The Vampire Book Club is going to be just as great as the Vampire Knitting Club series. I love it. I love it.
I love that it takes place in Ireland. Cannot wait for hopefully Irish and Celtic lore to show up?. Maybe?
You know that old saying do not judge a book by its cover? The moral being that it may not be what it seems. That applies to the people in this story. (Also applies to everyday life.) It is amazing how things can be blown out of proportion or misunderstood. What it leads to are curses, legends, good and bad, and judgement of people and their character.
I even got fooled by the who done it. My suspect was not it. Took till end of the book at the reveal to see I was wrong. Will you figure it out correctly? Before the end?
Without a doubt. I need to hurry and get book one in this series read. I missed it because I thought it was just a cover change. Bad me!!! Bad me!!!
I can definitely say can be read as a standalone (by itself). Easy to read, fun cozy mystery. Thoroughly enjoyable.
This is my honest and freely given review. I did receive an ARC book.
Chapter and Curse (The Vampire Book Club, Book 2) by Nancy Warren Narrated by: Hollis McCarthy Release Date: August 27, 2020
Chapter and Curse is the second book in The Vampire Book Club paranormal cozy mystery series by Nancy Warren. There are currently three books in the series, while only the first two are currently available on Audible.
This book was so good! The story was great and filled with unexpected humor. I love the characters in the book, especially Quinn, who is starting to come into her own in her new home in Ireland.
This book is filled with all the supernatural goodness that I look for in a cozy mystery: a quant Irish village, witches, a book shop with a book club, a hot vampire, and a mystery!
I loved the murder mystery in this book. There were so many twists and turns that kept you in suspense until the very end!
The narration by Hollis McCarthy is absolute perfection! She really knows how to bring a story to life!
I definitely recommend this book to all cozy mystery fans!
I received a review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Quinn attends her first traditional Irish wake to say goodbye to Billy O'Donnell and walks into a tense row between his daughter Brenda, a Dublin lawyer, and the local ex-convict now mechanic Jake.
Then Father O'Flanagan starts a mission to fix the steeple and tidy the churchyard it brings nothing but trouble for Quinn.. especially when he calls in a fancy team of tree surgeons to cut back the ancient yew tree which according to a 400 year old myth is the only thing preventing the return of Biddy O'Donnell an evil witch who was hanged for witchcraft.
When Brenda drops off boxes of books for Quinn to get rid of and she finds some valuable editions she returns to the O'Donnell house and discovers Brenda's been brutally attacked.. is it Biddy risen from the dead and seeking her revenge, or maybe Brenda's fiancé Dylan who seemed to arrive after the hard work was done, or could there be darker secrets alive and kicking in Ballydehag?
Quinn's determined to crack another case and make sure that the right person gets put away even if it is a 400 year old ghost..
5 stars overall, 5 stars story, 5 stars narration A lively mystery and thrilling fairy-tale magic
This second book in this paranormal women’s fiction and cozy mystery series absolutely bowled me over with magical thrills and a delightfully unpredictable new character. In addition, the handsome Lachlan Balfour makes a cool appearance or two helping the lovely Quinn Callahan. This second book was absolutely delightful! Quinn is very relatable, and her adventure was highly entertaining. The mystery really kept me guessing, and I really cared about the victim and solving it. I thought that the climax/showdown was very exciting as well. I look forward to listening to the rest of the series because Nancy Warren has taken it in an exciting direction. I highly recommend this series. The fantastic narrator, Hollis McCarthy, gave a wonderful performance that further enhanced the high quality of this audiobook. She is one of my favorite narrators. This mystery was so good that I plan to re-listen to it.
I requested and received a free audiobook copy from the author, and I voluntarily wrote this honest review.
Chapter and Curse is the second book in the Vampire Book Club Series by Nancy Warren. This is quickly becoming a favorite series for several reasons. First the main character is older, has regrets which we all do as we age, has to learn her way around in a new place and that place is a small village in Ireland. Quinn is nearer my age than Lucy another character in a favorite Nancy Warren series. Quinn more like someone who could be a friend especially as she maneuvers through new circumstances in her life.
Still paranormal and cozy mystery that is excellently written so that you are completely caught up in the story. May Quinn not fall under any old ancient curses, bad luck or foul play as she continues to solve the murders that happen in this charming if unusual village. The publisher/author gave me a complimentary ARC of the book which I voluntarily chose to read and reviewed. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Quinn is surprised to be roped into attending the wake of a man in the village she didn’t really know. It’s awkward because it hasn’t been too long since she accused some of the villagers of murder. The O’Donnell house feels dark to Quinn and she can’t wait to leave. Before she manages it she sees a heated conversation between Brenda, the dead man’s daughter and an unknown younger man, Jack. Brenda is killed a day later. Quinn wants to know what happened. She follows clues in books owned by Billy O’Donnell and her instincts. There is Karen Tate, who Quinn has already accused of murder once, Jack, the old school friend and Dylan, the “fiancé. I was a bit surprised by the final villain. Quinn and Lochlan, a vampire, make a good team as they race toward catching the killer. I like the Irish setting and the bookstore. Quinn is a bit abrupt in her questioning but she grows on you. This is turning into a fun series.
Quinn hasn't lived in Ballydehag, Ireland for long, but she's a!ready getting to know the locals well, being sent there from Seattle after using her witch powers to defy the laws of nature. She did it for good reasons, but broke rules and now rules a bookshop in the village and inherited a cottage and a cat familiar. Her book shop holds the vampire book club upstairs in Wed where sexy vampire Lochlan joins a plethora of old vampires. She is dragged to the wake of old Billy and is frightened by the ghost of a woman in the mirror, and it isn't long before someone is dead and she's investigating another crime. I really enjoyed seeing more of Lochlan in this one working with Quinn. They make a great team, and the new character Bridget is great. I hope she stays. The village has lots of eccentrics and it's a fun and beautiful environment for this cosy paranormal crime series filled with magic and mayhem. Great fun.
Chapter and Curse by Nancy Warren The Vampire Book Club Series Book Two Quinn Callahan has been in Ballydehag, Ireland, running The Blarney Tome for about a month now. She's beginning to love this small town and the people there.
Not that all the people love her so much. After trying to solve a murder, she made a few enemies by bringing their secrets to light. Starting on her first day in town. Not the best start, but at least a murderer was off the streets.
Now, an older man has died. Of natural causes, thank goodness. But...something else is amiss. An old woman, a yew tree, and an old story of an evil witch. And of course, Quinn is in the center of things once again, which is just fine for the vampire book club members who always enjoy a good mystery to break up their boring immortal lives. https://justjudysjumbles.blogspot.com...
