Captain America was the right character for the right time. World War Two had begun, but the US had not entered the fray. The time was right for a character to leap from the pages of a comic book and enthrall a nation. Superman had been born before this, but now Timely Comics had to find the perfect character.
Jack Kirby and Joe Simon put their heads together and Captain America emerged. With his faithful sidekick Bucky Barnes, a classic was created, the comic an instant success and million seller. That was nearly eighty years ago, and through these eight decades, Captain America has continued to be a symbol for the relentless fight against crime and injustice everywhere.
In CAPTAIN AMERICA THE ULTIMATE GUIDE, the newest edition covers every facet of the character and the many incarnations of the character who was Steve Rogers. His origins came from the fact Steve was a typical 98 pound weakling who was not soldier material because of his weight and body size. He was injected with the Super Soldier Serum by Dr. Abraham Erskine, immediately changing body and confidence, becoming Captain America.
During the war years the comic most often had Captain America fighting the Nazi menace and all things associated with it. But the villains soon piled up including the nemesis named The Red Skull. Later such baddies as Baron Von Strucker, were only two of the handful of characters out to try and take Captain America’s life. The book follows the evolution of the characters from beginning to more modern times. I admit to reading comics featuring the Captain first in Tales of Suspense in 1964 until he had his own comic, and then into 1972 or so.
Scanning the book, one finds how times change and the manner in which Captain America has been killed and resurrected, with others carrying on the name of Captain America. The loves in his life, the wild plot twists, and the key comics over the decades are more than worth the price of the book. Any lover of comics whether past or present, will find this book a most noteworthy addition to one’s library, as the life and times of Captain America is enshrined in comic history.
