I am a huge fan of the author Marcus Thompson. He's talented, interesting, bright, and articulate.

This is not one of his better works, to say the least.

Put simply, if you know very little about the NBA's dynasties (ex: you don't know Magic's early years, Bird's trash talking, Bill Russell's discovering of "jumping", Jerry Krause's role on the Bulls, etc.), this book is probably worth the read if you wanted to know more.

However, if you're a basketball fan who grew up with the Lakers and Celtics in the mid 80s, this book will do nothing for you. There is nothing new explored. No novel opinions. No awesome unknown stories. Put simply, it's not interesting. One might even call it boring.

I love MTII (author) and cannot stand Bill Simmons, but Bill Simmons is a great example of various techniques that can be used to make rehashing history very interesting.

I'm still a big MTII fan though. Everyone has a hiccup now and then.

3/10.

Fun content and interesting context on and off the court. Downside is this needed more editing - some glaring errors in the text and even the key W-L charts for each dynasty. Also illustrations instead of photographs is an interesting choice, but I liked them.

Some interesting chapter ending statistics but, not much else. A real lightweight of a book.

I wasn't exploring a foreign topic here, but this was a fun read. For one, I enjoyed Marcus' explainers for choosing each dynasty, and secondly, it's always enjoyable to hear about the stories of the early NBA and the players and coaches that took the league from nothing to something.

Fun, easy read. I loved the section on the 1989 Detroit Pistons. A fantastic - and often underrated - team.
