Este manhua lo tiene todo: humor, romance, amistad, temas sociales como el bullying, el travestismo, la presión social y escolar y la importancia de romper el tabú acerca de la menstruación.

Coming off of literally the worst piece of media I’ve ever read (Rent A Girlfriend) and a massive disappointment (In These Clothes Called Fat) I just wanted to go back to basics and read some queer romanceslop. And She’s Still Cute Today was everything I needed it to be.
Though like for a premise as simple as the asocial top student and the extroverted bottom student becoming close and falling in love kinda, it’s very unique and different from its peers. I mean it doesn’t not do the cliches, how they do them in fun and creative ways you wouldn’t expect to see your typical story. In general it handles its topics really well, especially the serious ones.
Like it goes through things like Transphobia, Suicide, Stalking, Bullying, Depression, Divorce, Trauma, Child Abuse, Child Neglect, Body Dysphoria and probably some other things I’m forgetting. And even if they’re not all done perfectly, they’re still really good and decently unique tacklings. Especially I’m big on the arcs with Xavier and his secret getting revealed, the one with Lex’s mom’s depression after her divorce and the Mindy and Mina bullying arc. It paints a picture of like, even if us and the people around us are not perfect, we can still learn, grow and become stronger people.
And that whole message manifests best in my absolute favourite part of this manhwa, the characters. I love all of them, every single one. Dee Dee, Lex, Xavier, Hank, Faye, Mina, Elise, Nathan, even the moms and Mindy. They’re all really interesting and compelling characters. My favourites are of course the main duo of Dee Dee and Lex. Watching their bond form and how they learn and grow both as friends and persons over the course of the 125 chapters is such a lovely thing. Like fundamentally the characters we meet at the beginning of this manhwa are not the same people at the end. At its core this is a series that is build around, and cherishes, the bonds we make in our school lives, and how they help us to change and grow as people.
Despite all this glaze, I do have my issues that stop me from giving it 5 stars. Firstly, the whole basis as to Lex and Dee Dee’s relationship being born out of a half-assed lie from Dee Dee is left forgotten and unresolved after like 15-20 chapters, especially when, based on the teaser, it was probably supposed to come back in some way. Though I’m not giving too much flack, because you can tell at some point the author’s intents for the series changed.
Secondly and worse though, despite all the build-up, all the clear intentions, how the characters talk to and about each other, and all the genuine flirting that goes on, it doesn’t commit to any of its relationships. I’ve heard people say that it’s just a thing with Chinese GLs that it’s always a sort of grey area they have to inhabit. But I’ve read 4 other Chinese GLs that all commit to the relationship things and some even get pretty explicit with it. And it’s not just the gay or lesbian relationships that aren’t committed to, it’s the straight ones too, which probably fared the worst.
Which leads to my third thing that this so clearly was meant to have a part 2 that’s seemingly never releasing. Even looking past the unresolved relationships that feel too explicit to be tease yet refuse to be official. The ending is so open ended in a way where like, you know it’s meant to be an ending of sorts, but you also feel like something else is supposed to be coming after it. And it doesn’t even have one of those little “thank you for keeping up with this story and for supporting all these years :3” notes, it just ends right there. But it’s been 4 years since this wrapped and, outside of a development hell Drama, not a lick else has come from this series.
Though overall, I love this quite a bit. It came to me in a period where I really wasn’t feeling a lot of what I was reading, and I just needed something simple and sweet to binge, and it was that and a good bit more. If you’re looking for something cute and fun and sweet, that’s usually unserious but still has the capabilities of being serious when need be, this is a great read.
