Mình đọc cuốn này thấy thật sự thú vị, nó giải đáp cho mình những thắc mắc của mình lúc mới học tiếng Anh. Đọc xong rồi thì thấy bực mình vì hồi giờ giáo viên tiếng Anh mình học, khi được học sinh hỏi vì sao từ này, hay chủ điểm ngữ pháp này nó là thế này chứ không phải thế kia thì phán cho ngay một câu rất gọn là "Vì tiếng Anh nó thế, các em đừng hỏi nhiều!". Mấy lúc đó chỉ muốn nói, không, tiếng Anh nó không thế, chỉ có các vị mới "thế" :)

Lúc mình hỏi trong một group trên FB về phần bài tập của cuốn này thì có một bác vào nói là nhập môn ngôn ngữ học tri nhận thì không nên đọc cuốn này vì nó có nhiều thông tin sai lệch, nguyên văn như này:

"1)In cognitive linguistics, there are controversial issues (actually the majority of topics are controversial). Is the prototype theory applicable? If so, which version of prototypicality does carry the heavier weight and why? Is foregrounding more useful or cognitive grammar? Can grammar be processed separately inside of the brain (assigning specific cerebral pathways and substrates)? Why functional words and content words should be treated differently? To answer these exemplary questions (and more), unequivocal evidence from neuroscience is usually imported. Accordingly, cognitive linguists modified their theories and responded to the criticism leveled at the original versions. Lee's book includes inaccurate information. Once you study it as a beginner, you will acquire such incorrect information as the base on which you will keep "piling on". 2) Eminent scholars have changed their opinion, over the past decade, as regards supporting/criticizing theories in cognitive linguistics. A 17-year-old book would be unable to cite so. AND 3) Most of cognitive linguistic theories share the basic tenets (and interfere with each other). Example's include Fillmores' FrameNet and Lakoff's Idealized cognitive model. A good reader in cognitive linguistics can teach you about the difference. I would not consider Lee a good reader. However, I agree with [...] that Vyvyan Evans is knowledgeable about this domain. I would rather prefer his 2009's book "New Directions in Cognitive Linguistics" to his read-with-precaution book "Cognitive Linguistics. An Introduction" (2006). HOPE THIS HELPS."

Những phần mình thích nhất trong cuốn này là phần nói về "Không gian", "Mở rộng nghĩa không gian", "Không gian tinh thần". Hai phần đầu thì dễ nắm bắt hơn vì nó gần gũi với mình, hồi nhỏ mỗi lần làm bài tập điền giới từ các kiểu mình cũng có nhiều thắc mắc, rồi cũng có cách để tự hình dung ra không gian lúc làm bài nhưng đọc xong cuốn này thì cảm giác sự hình dung đó nó nó toàn diện hơn nhiều. Đúng hơn, đọc những lời diễn giải sự hình dung của mình ra chi tiết nó rất thú vị.

Phần "Không gian tinh thần" thì như trong sách có nói, lý thuyết này đóng một vai trò quan trọng trong bộ khung tổng thể của ngôn ngữ học tri nhận, vì nó soi rọi trên nhiều hiện tượng ngôn ngữ, bao gồm quy chiếu, tính điều kiện, ẩn dụ và tính hợp tố. Mình sẽ đọc một cuốn về riêng phần này sau.

I occasionally encounter academic books that are just so well put together that I sit down and read chapter after chapter. I just finished this one and I think any English speaker would find it interesting. It offers explanations for a lot of the eccentricities of English in use.

From a linguistics perspective it's also interesting because it strongly rebuts Chomsky-style generative linguistic theories, and it does so quite eloquently and simply. I studied my B.A. in Linguistics largely grounded in Chomskyian generative linguistics and always felt it was just a little off. The principles of cognitive linguistics presented in this volume offer a very reasonable alternative explanation for many of the aspects of language that must be accounted for in a theory of language.

I am more than satisfied with this book. It offers wide variety of interesting linguistic topics, and its language is very clear and easily understandable.
