Fascinating read

This is more than a story for learning German. It is very well organized. But more interesting is the way in which young professionals are making their careers. People from Italy, Spain, Poland, etc., are finding new opportunities there, using the internet.

Anna is a woman with two daughters, one an artist in Berlin, the other working as a marketing expert (and locked in a toxic relationship) in Frankfurt. Anna has big plans for the Floripa, a coffeeshop she runs, but one day she's hit by a car and all of those plans fall by the wayside for awhile. Thankfully, though, she can depend on her daughters and even some of her more regular customers to help her through these hard times.

"Ein Sommer in Heidelberg" is an intermediate German reader that uses a fast-paced, entertaining story filled with human drama to keep the student engaged while they're learning. The characters are well-developed enough that the reader could get a sense for who's talking even if there were no dialogue attribution (but mostly there is). New vocab is integrated into the chapters, with definitions provided at the base of the page, in story. At the end of each section are a series of review exercises to make sure students have comprehended the material, as well as refreshers on grammatical gender, adjective endings, and case.

A fairly advanced high school student could probably get through the book in a month, working at a moderate pace (faster if they really plowed through it). It's not quite as good as the "Dino Learnt Deutsch" series, but that little primer's the gold standard, and "Ein Sommer" more than fits the bill. Small illustrations are included at the beginning of the book to help the reader put faces to the names. Similar understated but colorful images are included at the chapter beginnings to give the reader a sense of place. Highest recommendation.

Loved it

This book helped me to feel more comfortable with how the German language flows. I learned new German words and phrases and was pleased that the way it was written often allowed me to figure out a new word's meaning without having to look it up. The story itself was very good as well! Definely plan to read more of her books

This is a well-structured book for improving your German. The challenge words are frequently supported by strong context, which makes them much easier to grasp. I also appreciated that the book follows a single continuous story rather than a collection of short stories; the continuity of the plot really helps with comprehension.

Decent story for a graded reader. It was nice to read one consecutive story instead of a lot of short stories like others I have read. Will look for more of this author’s work!
