Japanese reinforcements arrive at Guadalcanal on the Tokyo Express as the Marines hold on with little food, a few battered airplanes, and a whole lot of guts. The navy continues to rebuild and the leadership in the South Pacific is shaken. Admiral King faces a possible American Dunkirk in the Pacific and the invasion in North Africa is imminent. Admiral Nimitz must make a change and only one admiral is ready to enter the battle. This new leader needs every possible advantage to win the pivotal battles of October and November, so James Brand and the Science Team are once again dispatched. Everything rides on a few good ships and their valiant crews.Elsewhere, scientists and engineers examine new ways to make war. Professor Brand’s old boss calls on the young prodigy’s expertise and assistance with an experiment that, if successful, will bring both political and military challenges...altering the future.
Mr. Porter gave us an intriguing expose of much of the history of the American involvement in WWII as revealed through the development of Lt. James Brand and his extended family of warriors. Although the initial concept of a teenaged genius advising WII leaders of legendary status was hard to accept initially, one learns to anticipate him "growing" into the role. His odyssey is artfully used to read us in on the actual historical actions and events of the era while organizing the accepted reasoning that caused the actual decisions that were made. The accompanying cast of characters brought in to the series are highly believable and accurate portrayals of the kind of leaders produced by " the greatest generation"---- at least, the ones I was fortunate enough to have known while I came of age. I look forward to Mr. Porter's next gift inn his series involving Professor James Brand.
Another Great Read in this wonderful Series Covering The Early Years of WWII I Both The Atlantic & Pacific
Great Action - Military, Technical, Diplomatic, & Political. Really describes what it takes to achieve success in the very. Complex Process of waging World War across the globe, at Sea, on Land, & in The Air. Weapons, Skilled Personel, Supplies & Amunition, and Intelligence,Strategy, & Tactics don't just appear. War is a very complex business Covered in sl.ost all aspects in this book, & Series extremely well. Romance blossums as well. SPECIAL LEADERS DEVELOP & Stand Out.
This book brought out the failings of the USN leadership. A lot of good men died because Admirals fought battles that were taught before radar and spotter aircraft. It also pointed out the failings of Congress not authorization of proper weapons. We had torpedoes that were forced on our troops and they did not work. We had radar, but no Commander used it as it was designed. Many lives lost because of poor leadership, both in military and congress.
Superb continuation of the Professor James Brand adventures…
The most enjoyable naval fiction series I’ve read in many years. As satisfying as C.S. Forester’s Hornblower books, as interesting as Alastair MacLean’s thrillers, and as educational as fact based as books by Tom Clancy, J. Eugene Porter hits another grand slam home run. Read, savor, and enjoy…
Every bok is outstanding from the historical events added to wonderful characters. I enjoyed every page. I look forward to the next book and what happens to the Captain, Carol, Flanagan and of course Lady Bagley and James.
Descriptions of battles are quite graphic, . Characters and plots interesting.covers both theaters of WW11,would encourage tracking series in order. A must read adventure!
Actually too much, I would have preferred a little more action description, rather than all the obscure .names and titles, which never were mentioned again. It was obviously extremely well researched
Finished binge reading the first four books of that which I am hoping will be a long series. As a WWII history scholar, the tracking with factual events is outstanding. And, the plausibility of a military muse is most interesting. Cannot wait for book 5
And grime, more actual combat. Still too many repeats of the many paragraphs, phrases and praises re the Science Team. Probably should be 3 books rather than 6, but I have a personal problem.....I stick until the end.....UNLESS it bores me to tears. So far, so good.
The ending was exceptional I couldn't help but chuckle. Though I did find many of the actual facts interesting. I look forward to hopefully continuing the saga of Lt. James Brand and the rest of the Science Team.
