About the author

Her writing focuses on contemporary social issues. She is a perceptive observer of the changing urban milieu and her writing closely examines the contemporary Bengali middle class. Crisis in human relationships and the changing values of the present era along with degeneration of the moral fibre of the society in the backdrop of globalisation and consumerism are depicted in her prose. Exploitations and sufferings of women regardless of their social or economic identities find a distinct voice in her writing. While she is famous for her writing on women's issues, she does not consider herself as a feminist. She took up many odd jobs in her early youth and finally joined the public service which she left in 2004 to become a fulltime writer. Her long career is reflected in many of her stories and novels.

Over the past two decades, Suchitra has written about 24 novels and a large number of short stories in different leading Bangla literary magazines. Some of her acclaimed novels are Kachher Manush (Close to Me), Dahan (The Burning), Kacher Dewal(The Wall Of Glass), Hemonter Pakhi(Bird of Autumn), Neel Ghurni, Aleek Shukh(Heavenly happiness), Gabhir Ashukh (A Grave Illness), Uro Megh(Flying Cloud), Chhera Taar, Alochhaya(Shadows Of Light), Anyo Basanto(Another Spring), Parabas, Palabar Path Nei, Aami Raikishori, Rangin Pritibi and Jalchhobi among others. Her novels and short stories have been translated into many Indian languages such as Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Oriya, Marathi, Gujarati, Punjabi and English. She also writes novels and short stories for children. Her novel Dahan was made into a movie by famous Bengali director, Rituparno Ghosh.

সুচিত্রার "দহন" কিংবা "উড়ো মেঘ" পড়া না থাকলে হয়তো "হেমন্তের পাখি" আরেকটু বেশি ভালো লাগতো। অনেকে এই কাহিনি পড়ে খুব বিরক্ত হবে। বলবে, "সব পুরুষরা কি এরকম? সবাই কি এগুলো করে বেড়ায়?" রক্ষণশীলদের কথা আগেই বাদ। আমি অনেক দেখেশুনে এই সিদ্ধান্তে উপনীত হয়েছি যে, উল্লেখযোগ্য কিছু ব্যতিক্রম ছাড়া, "আধুনিক" সব পুরুষ অদিতির স্বামী সুপ্রতিমের মতোই। তারা নারী স্বাধীনতায় বিশ্বাসী, তারা নিজেদের স্ত্রীদের "স্বাধীনতা দেন", যতক্ষণ পর্যন্ত নিজেদের ইগোতে আঘাত না লাগে। অদিতি সংশয়ী, ভীত সন্তস্ত্র, কিন্তু খাঁচায় বন্দি দুর্বল পাখির উত্তরণ দেখে তারও হয়তো শক্তি  হবে নিজের পায়ে দাঁড়ানোর, তারও দরকার নিজের পায়ে দাঁড়ানোর।

It's phenomenal. প্রতিটা মানুষের নিজস্বতা থাকা যে কত জরুরি! অদিতি'র সংসার তাঁর জামাই আর দুই ছেলেকে নিয়ে। জামাই সুপ্রতিম ব্যস্ত তার কর্মজীবন নিয়ে, পাপাই-তাতাই ব্যস্ত নিজেদের নিয়ে-তাদের আকাশ এখন অসীম! এদিকে অদিতি'র সময় কাটে নতুন নতুন শখ নিয়ে- কখনো সেটা শাড়ির বিজনেস করা কিংবা পাখি পালা; কোনকিছুতেই বেশিদিন মন বসে না- আর সে উপলব্ধি করে কী ভীষণ একা সে! আবারো শুরু করলো লেখালেখি- ছোটবেলার সেই লেখনী ছাপিয়ে উড়াল দেওয়ার স্বপ্ন। কিন্তু তাঁর সংসারের সবাই কি তাঁকে সাহায্য করবে? তাঁর ডানা মেলে কি অসীম আকাশে উড়াল দেওয়া হবে? এতো সুন্দর আর সাবলীলভাবে আমাদের উপমহাদেশের মেয়েদের গল্প তুলে ধরা হয়েছে! এই গল্প অসংখ্য হোমমেকারদের, যারা নিজের সর্বস্ব বিসর্জন দিয়ে সংসারকে আগলে রাখতে চায় যেন বাকি মানুষগুলো এগিয়ে যেতে পারে। এই গল্প এই সমাজের সব অদিতির, যাদের পেছনে ফেলতে কেউ ২বার ভাবে না।

ps. সুপ্রতিম একটা asshole. রাগে আমি অনেকদিন বইটা তুলে রেখেছিলাম কারণ সুপ্রতিমের কান্ড-কারখানা পড়লে আমার গায়ে আগুন ধরে যেতো।

মধ্যবিত্ত বাঙালি গৃহিণী অদিতি। সে বাড়ীর বউ, স্ত্রী এবং মা। কিন্তু তার বাইরে? তার কি আর কোন পরিচয় আছে? এই উপন্যাস মানুষ কে ভাবতে শেখায়, নিজের চেনা গণ্ডির বাইরে মানুষকে চিনতে শেখায়, চারপাশের পৃথিবী টাকে। খাঁচার পাখি আর খাঁচার গৃহিণী এই দুই জীবনের সমীকরণকে যে এত সহজে এক করে দেওয়া যায়, সেটার জীবন্ত উদাহরণ হল সুচিত্রা ভট্টাচার্য্যের এই উপন্যাস।

অদিতির জীবনের গল্প এইটি. তার ভালোলাগা গুলোর পাত্তা না পাওয়ার গল্প. তার অবহেলিত হওয়ার গল্প. নায়িকা অদিতি হলেও, খলনায়ক তার ভালোবাসার সকলেই. স্বামী সুপ্রতিম উচ্চপদস্থ কিন্ত জানেনা স্ত্রী এর পছন্দ গুলো... সে কোনোভাবেই মেনে নিতে পারেনা স্ত্রী এর নাম যশ, তাইই হেমেনমামাকে অপমান করেন. অদিতি লেখালিখি ছেড়ে দেয়. অথচ সে শুধু ভালো থাকতে চেয়েছিল. সেই মতো গুছিয়ে নিয়েছিলো সবই. সাহিত্যের হাত ধরে ধীরে ধীরে বেড়ে উঠছিল তার মননের এক আশাবাদী চারা গাছ. কিন্তু প্রকৃতি কে বাধ সাধল তার তার পুরুষ. খুকু হারিয়ে গেলো, মরে গেলো... আর মৃত্যুর কারণ হল তার প্রিয় টিয়াপাখির খোলা আকাশে ডানা মেলায়!

“হেমন্তের পাখি” একটি সংবেদনশীল ও মন ছুঁয়ে যাওয়া ছোটগল্প। গল্পে হেমন্তের পরিবেশের সঙ্গে মানুষের ভেতরের নিঃসঙ্গতা ও স্মৃতির মিশেল দেখা যায়। পাখির প্রতীক ব্যবহার করে লেখিকা হারিয়ে যাওয়া অনুভূতি ও সম্পর্কের কথা বলেছেন। ভাষা খুবই সহজ কিন্তু গভীর অর্থবহ। গল্পটি পড়লে এক ধরনের নীরব বিষণ্ণতা ও ভাবনার রেশ থেকে যায়।

সুচিত্রা ভট্টাচার্যের "কাছের মানুষ", " নীল ঘূর্ণি " বা "দহন" এর মতো নয় "হেমন্তের পাখি"। মানবজীবনের জটিল মনস্তত্ত্ব, সম্পর্কের টানাপোড়েনকে ছাপিয়ে একজন ৪৫ ছুঁইছুঁই নারীর এক অন্যরকম অস্তিত্ব সংকটের আখ্যান "হেমন্তের পাখি" উপন্যাসটি।

অদিতি মজুমদার একজন আদর্শ গৃহিণী, জীবনের ২৬টা বসন্ত যে পার করে দিয়েছে শুধুমাত্র সংসার, স্বামীর খেদমত ও দুই ছেলের লালনপালনের পেছনে; যার পরিচয় এতকাল ধরে ছিলো শুধুমাত্র সুপ্রতিম মজুমদারের স্ত্রী ও পাপাই- তাতাইয়ের মা হিসেবেই। কিন্তু এক দুপুরে সাহিত্যপ্রেমী হেমেনমামার আগমনে বদলে গেলো অদিতির জীবন, সে যেন ফিরে পাবার স্বপ্ন দেখতে লাগলো তার সেই আজন্ম লালিত স্বর্ণালী শৈশবকে, যেখানে কাগজ-কলমের সাথে মিতালি পাতিয়ে সে লিখে ফেলতো একের পর এক গল্প-কবিতা-স্মৃতিচারণ। সংসা নামক খাঁচায় বন্দী পাখির ন্যায় অদিতিও যেনো মুক্তির স্বপ্ন দেখতে লাগলো এই লেখনীকে ভর করে। তার এই স্বপ্ন কি পূরণ হবে আদৌ?

উপন্যাসটি ঝরঝরে, মেদহীন ও সাবলীল ভাষায় লেখা। বিষয়বস্তুও বেশ সময়োপযোগী ও প্রাসঙ্গিক। আমরা নারীরা সংসার নামক যাঁতাকলের ঘানি টানতে টানতে ভুলেই যাই নিজেদের স্বকীয়তা, অনন্যতা বা নিজস্বতার কথা। অদিতিও ভুলতে বসেছিলো সে কথা। কিন্তু হেমেনমামার অনুপ্রেরণায় তার সুপ্ত প্রতিভায় ঘেরা সাহিত্যানুরাগী মনখানি আবারো রঙিন প্রজাপতির ডানায় ভর করে নেচে উঠলেও একসময় সে বুঝতে পারে, যে সংসার, যে স্বামী ও সন্তানের পেছনে সে প্রাণাতিপাত করেছিলো বছরের পর বছর, তারা কেন যেন তার এই ভিন্নধর্মী অথচ মননশীল সত্তাটাকে সাদরে গ্রহণ করছে না, অনুপ্রেরণা দেয়া তো দূর। অদিতি বুঝতে পারে, তার সাথে তার খাঁচায় বন্দী পোষা টিয়াটার আদতে কোন তফাৎ নেই। দানাপানি পেলেও মুক্ত আকাশ ছাড়া যেমন বিহঙ্গের কোন অস্তিত্ব নেই, তেমনিই অদিতি তার জীবনে একটুকরো অবারিত আকাশ হিসেবে চেয়েছিলো তার পরিবারের অনুপ্রেরণা, ভরসা, যা সে পেতে ব্যর্থ হয়েছিলো। আমার প্রশ্ন এটাই, এই ব্যর্থতার দায়ভার কি শুধু অদিতির একারই?

পরিশেষে এটুকুই বলবো, "হেমন্তের পাখি" সুচিত্রা ভট্টাচার্যের অন্যতম আন্ডাররেটেড উপন্যাস হলেও এই উপন্যাসটি কেবলমাত্র প্রতিটি নারীর জন্যই নয়, বরং নারীপুরুষ নির্বিশেষে সকল পাঠকের জন্যই অবশ্যপাঠ্য, কারণ অস্তিত্ব সংকটে কমবেশি আমরা সকলেই ভুগি, বিশেষ করে যখন আমাদের মুক্তিরূপী স্বকীয়তাকে তুচ্ছতাচ্ছিল্য করা হয়, অবহেলা করা হয়।

অদিতি, এক সাধারণ মধ্যবিত্ত গৃহবধূ, যে কিনা নিজের সংসার নিয়েই কাটিয়ে দিলো জীবনের অর্ধেক সময়, সে একটা সময় খুঁজে পেলো তার নিজস্ব আকাশ। সে লিখতে পারে। ছোটবেলায় লেখালেখি করা সত্বেও কি অবলীলায় সংসারের জালে আটকে এতদিন ভুলে ছিল এই কথাটা!!

সংসার সামলে সে লেখালেখি চালিয়ে যেতে চেয়েছিল, নিজের পরিচয় চেয়েছিল। কিন্তু সে কি পারবে? তার পরিবার কি তাকে সাহায্য করবে?

সুচিত্রা ভট্টাচার্যের লেখায় আলাদা একটা স্বাভাবিক সাবলীল ব্যাপার থাকে যার সাথে খুব সহজেই একাত্ম হওয়া যায়। মনে হয় নিজের বাড়ির বা আশেপাশের মানুষের কথাই পড়ছি। এই গল্প অসংখ্য গৃহবধূর গল্প, যারা নিজের সব কিছু বিসর্জন দিয়ে সংসারকে আগলে রাখে যাতে সংসারের বাকি মানুষগুলো কৃতকার্য হতে পারে। বইটা ভালো লেগেছে আমার, আবার কষ্টও হয়েছে পড়ার পর।

এক গৃহিণীর জীবন কিরকম তা নিজের মা'কে দেখেই এই উপন্যাসের সমতুল্য ভাবে পড়া শেষ করলাম। নারীদের জীবণ সংগ্রামের শেষ নেই কিন্তু তবুও নিজেকে চেনা এবং পরবর্তীতে সেটাকে বয়ে নিয়ে চলা। এই উপন্যাসে সেটা উৎকৃষ্ট উদাহরণ।

Aditi, Ma, Khuku, Phool..... names of our protagonist, as called by the other characters inhabiting this short yet remarkable novel. Like any other common homemaker, she's a sister, a wife, a mother, a female as well, trying to search for her own identity.
She does not want herself to be defined as someone's sister, or wife or mother. The only name she wants to be known is for herself.
From the very start, we see a homely lady, bored with common household chores, struggling with a parrot to teach words and phrases. The aloofness, boredom and nostalgia of a past life and left out ambitions makes you remember Charulata from NoshtoNeer.
A sudden visit from Hemenmama, a motivator and mentor from past starts a chain reaction of events, unbridled and uncontrolled. Along with them, comes in her brother and his family, her childhood friends and neighbours. Her sons who are now growing up. Her controlling, egoistic, judgmental but dotting husband.
She puts pen to paper and lets her emotions flow. She let opens a long lost dimension, one that she thought was bygone. She started seeing her life, her family with a new lens. And so started the clashes. Is Aditi only wife of Supratim? His son's mother? A robot of skin and flesh to oil up and smooth the tool of family? Is there no scope for another Aditi outside this circle of life?
The author evokes emotion with simple and lucid language, that will stay with you, because the instances are from our ordinary day and times. Of our own families and dear ones. How we wrong them and placate. How we keep going ad coming close to our own. Of misunderstandings, and tolerance and betrayal. Of hiding secrets and divulging the same to hurt and feel superior.
A 133 page novel, simple but standing out, due to a fine-knotted tale, sewn with impactful dialogues and full-grown characters.

It's in us not only men it's in everyone. We have to fight with ourselves and surroundings to find out where it is wrong.

There are many layers of injustice on women of our society. A huge war needs to fought to break each layer at a time.

slice of life of a washed out writer rediscovering herself and her love for the craft of writing even in the midst of those humane chores necessary for sustenance of attachments yet useless in the grand scheme of things(that birds life sums it up i think),that holds us back from understanding the point of it all-learning and giving back(?)

this book is the reason i started writing reviews here(also after seeing my ex roommate keep a personal journal). this book made me feel that i want to write for myself,i want to write better.
So yeah if this has any effect on a cynical person like me most people will feel the same too.

Highly impactful for me but not that heavy with that literary sauce,i mean its a slice of life,i didnt expect as such
