Bizzy Bear is trying his hand as a pizza chef in this novelty book full of tabs to slide, push, and pull. Watch Bizzy Bear gather ingredients, cook the pizzas, and deliver them to hungry customers. Perfect for little ones who love to help out in the kitchen.
Benji Davies is the illustrator of the Bizzy Bear books, Bizzy Bear: Let’s Go and Play and Bizzy Bear: Fun on the Farm. As a child, Benji knew that when he grew up he either wanted to make films or draw pictures in books. He is still working out which he likes best, and currently divides his time between illustrating children’s books and directing animation.
He has worked on a huge range of subjects and platforms, with clients as diverse as such Waterstone’s, Sainsbury’s and Oxfam, and in countries as different as India and Australia. He’s illustrated for several major publishers and is pleased to be working on Nosy Crow’s start-up list.
This super cute board book will send tiny chefs into a pizza-induced happy place! Bizzy Bear is busy making pizza at Topo’s Pizza, helped by Mouse and Dog. He delivers the pies on his bike to other adorable animal denizens in the town. The big draws of this book are the sliders which allow kids to mimic slicing tomatoes in an up-and-down motion and knead the dough as well. Besides the sliders, there are several wheels to turn to choose pizza toppings and to follow Bizzy Bear on his bike around town. The digital art is Richard Scarry-esque, with diminutive animals with friendly faces, in warm bright colors. The rhyming, following a “Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear” scheme, is iffy in a few places, but the sweet art and interaction with pizza making more than make up for it. The 8 pages are super thick and sturdy.
The story has a nice flow with each page having a rhyming (or fairly close) feature. The various pull tabs, sliders and spinners are engaging. I can see this being utilized before a child makes their own pizza and gives a chance to talk about various toppings that can go on a pizza. My only criticism is that Bizzy Bear is chopping with a chef's knife...I think the line could have been prep (instead of slice) the veggies or similar, but it may also lead to conversations of parents telling their children that knives are for grownups or they have to use a special type of cutter. Otherwise, nice book showing how a pizza is made and that it can be delivered to homes as well. It also features a brick oven that the pizza comes from once cooked.
Loved that the movement in this book mainly made the Bear do actions instead of it just being a sliding panel that showed a new pic. It was super fun to cut the veggies!
