Rate this book
A trio of misbehaving, mango-loving monkeys have a close call as the creator of Don’t Worry, Little Crab gives readers a taste of vicarious mischief.

Three little monkeys and their big monkey are sitting high on a branch in the forest canopy. “OK, monkeys! I’m off," says the big monkey. “Remember . . . Whatever you do, do NOT go down to the mango tree. There are tigers down there.” Mmm . . . mangoes! think the little monkeys. They LOVE mangoes. Hmm . . . Maybe . . . maybe they could just look at the mangoes. That would be OK, right? With vivid colors, bold shapes, and his trademark visual humor, Chris Haughton is back with a deliciously suspenseful cautionary tale about pushing boundaries—and indulging your more impish side (when nobody is looking).

Three little monkeys are told not to go down to the mango tree - there are tigers there! But mangos are so jucy and sweet - MAYBE if they just go look at the mango tree - surely there is no harm in that. This could be a 'stranger danger' book for small children - helping them understand things can change very quickly when you put yourself in a bad situation!

Maybe… is young children’s picture book about three little monkeys who are learning a life lesson. When their mother leaves them alone, she warns them not to go to the mango tree as there are tigers around who want to eat them.

When she leaves they talk each other into just going to look at the mango tree. But they can’t resist getting closer for a taste as they love mangos. What they can’t see are the tigers waiting in the bushes, lurking and watching the monkeys, getting ready to pounce.

The story for me was about emphasising to children that they should 1) do as you are told. 2) you can’t always see the danger. The monkeys certainly learned a valuable lesson – maybe…

The illustrations throughout are full-page and are just like the cover, with lots of deep reds and blues. The text is kept to a minimum, making this book quite a simple and quick read.

The book was enjoyable and entertaining. It would make a lovely class or bedtime story.

The author begins each of his books with a quote. This book started with Aristotle's quote "...we learn by doing".

As always, the illustrations were expressive and cute.
But I am concerned that these monkeys are not just engaging in mischievous, but dangerous behavior. I know, it's a jungle out there. And monkeys have to deal with predators wanting to eat them. But they didn't even see the tigers.

I'm not sure I want to reinforce behavior in a tiny human that is akin to climbing into a wild animal enclosure (or running into traffic).

This is super cute, albeit simple, and follows three cheeky monkeys stealing mangoes whilst trying to avoid a tiger.

The narrative is really engaging for small readers, asking questions they can nod along to emphatically. The addition of Jungle animals and funny encounters was also really nice.

The only failing of the story is that it’s very short and very simple, even for smaller readers. But it still provided a fun bedtime story nonetheless (and children are tough critics so that’s saying something!)

Featured in a grandma reads session.

These types of operators are found in every walk of life. Big Monkeys lay down the law, little monkeys obey for a while, and then begin to justify their non-compliance with all the reasons couched in a Big Maybe. . . .as I was reading this out-loud to a darling crew who mostly just saw monkeys, mangos, and tigers, my mind was all over the place with corporate and organizational ways this could be used. . .with labels applied to the various aspects of this tale, identifying the monkeys (big and little), the temptations (mangoes, et al), and tigers.

Sometimes it matters. Sometimes it don't, depending on the consequences brought by tigers. AND I could surely see this backfiring for all the same reasons.

It may surprise you, dear Reader, that I am often accused of overthinking. I just don't see it. Kid vote was 3. I would have gone higher, but they weren't apprised of my deeper thoughts on this. They might get ideas. Bein' monkeys, and all.

Three little monkeys are warned by their grown-up not to go down to the mango tree because there are tigers down there. The monkeys, thinking they know better, disobey and visit the mango tree anyway.

The pictures in this book all have a red background and most of the time, only monkeys, mangoes, and trees appear against it. The monkeys have large white eyes with black pupils, and bodies of dark blue and green. The tigers, when they appear in the background, are depicted using a dull red color that hides them from the monkeys. When they come out to attack, they are orange with black scribbles making up their features. The illustrations depend largely on facial expression and body posture to tell their piece of the story. Kids will delight in knowing the tigers are present before the monkeys notice them and the visual drama when the tigers finally pounce makes for a very exciting and satisfying climax to the book.

This book could probably work for story time, provided the performer points out the tigers when they appear in the background, as they are the only piece of the pictures that may not be noticeable at a distance. Otherwise, this book suits a plethora of themes: monkeys, the jungle, fruit (mangos), tigers, danger, obedience, and even foolishness. The fact that the ending is left open and the monkeys obviously don't learn their lesson also makes it a good book for sparking discussion with preschool and even early elementary audiences.

This book attempts to teach its monkeys a lesson, but they are unwilling to learn. Thankfully, the reader is probably not so foolish and will disagree with the monkeys' future plans as suggested by the final pages of the story. The book is funny, but the lesson about listening to adults and appreciating possible dangers also comes across well and will likely be taken seriously by young readers. I didn't like this book quite as much as this author's Shh, We Have a Plan but the tone in both books is very similar and fans of one will enjoy the other. I read this book to my three oldest kids, ages 3, 5, and 7, and they all enjoyed it and all agreed that the monkeys were not very wise.

Three little monkeys are told not to go to the mango tree because there are a lot of tigers around. But they say that "maybe" it would be okay to just look at the mango tree. And maybe it would be okay to just eat one mango. But they quickly learn that the situation is more dangerous than they realized, and there are tigers stalking them everywhere!

I love that this book teaches children the importance of obedience and safety while also telling a fun story! The illustrations are so cute and I love the adorable little monkeys.

The Chris Haughton brand is well established and well loved: bright blocks of colour and funny, tricky situations. Here the monkeys risk attack from the tigers to get at mangoes, only to be forced to seek refuge in a tree. So, no mangoes… but other temptations beckon…
And I laughed out in the bookshop.

Oh, the perils of ignoring your mother's warnings. The 3 little monkeys in this story press their luck as they sneak down to the mango trees for "just a look". Do they learn their lesson? Maybe... This book has been nominated for the 2023 Kentucky Bluegrass Award for preschool students.

ENGLISH:

A cute and sweet book (with plenty of humour) about 3 little monkey who think that it is safe to look at the mango’s, but is it?

In this adorable book, aptly named Maybe, we meet 3 little monkeys who hear from their mom that she is off for a while and that the three have to stay in the tree, because it is DANGEROUS near the mango tree. You know, standard mom warnings (just without mangotrees and tigers in our lives). I could understand that the 3 little monkeys were thinking. And thinking. Because maybe? Just maybe? Looking isn’t bad? Mom never said anything about that. And those mangos are looking mighty fine! I was looking forward what would happen next!

Because you know how kids are. First it is looking, then it is goes further than that! And we as the reader see that there are tigers lurking in the shadows, the illustrations clearly show us that DANGER is right around the corner. You just wish you could step into the book and warn the trio. Tell them that those mangos are mighty fine, but not worth the risk! Though, if I could step into the book I would probably just give them a mango. Haha. It got really exciting and a thrill. I mean, I know that there will be a happy end, almost all children’s books end with that, but still you are worried for the trio’s safety.

The ending. OH NO! XD

The illustrations were really fun and I loved the style!

All in all, a fun book about listening and that looking often ends into touching or just going for what may not be the best choice. Though kids here probably won’t get tigers after that, like this trio did.

This is such a funny story and with a great message too! Three little monkeys are sitting in a tree while their parent tells them to stay where they are, to not go near the mangoes because there are tigers about. But while waiting in the tree the three monkeys get hungry and they decide that maybe it’s okay to just look at the mangos. Once they check that there are no tigers about they decide that it’s not enough to look at the mangoes but maybe it’s okay to just take the one mango that’s so close to the tree. And then maybe a few more. But maybe the monkeys should be more careful, because maybe there are tigers about after all…

The hardback book is filled with thick matt pages of really colourful illustrations and text. I have loved every one of Chris Haughton’s picture books and this one is just as brilliant! The three monkeys constantly wonder if maybe they could just get a little closer to the mangoes, maybe have a bite, maybe more, but while the monkeys constantly push their luck, eventually danger does appear in the form of the tigers. I like how simple this story is and how the monkeys end up, hopefully, learning a valuable lesson, although the funny ending with a bit of a twist makes you wonder if they actually did!

The story is so fun and simple but is filled with some great repetition which kids will enjoy and although the story isn’t too complex it still carries and teaches an important lesson about the importance of listening to warnings and also that danger can sometimes be lurking even when you think it is safe. I like how this important message is wrapped into the story and how this can lead to some discussion with children on this topic too.

The illustrations are so amazing. I love Haughton’s use of colour in this book, the monkeys are a contrast to the bright reddish world of their jungle and I love how you can see the expression on their faces which are especially funny when they are wondering if maybe something will be okay. The illustrations also show the tigers well. I love how these cats look and especially how they are subtely visible in the background of some earlier pages which kids might enjoy trying to spot. The illustrations are all so engaging and simple and there’s even one special one whick I really love which requires you to turn the book on its side to view it properly! I think the illustrations alone will make children want to look at this book again and again, and coupled with the simple story and great messge about safety, it makes a great book for children to enjoy and one I’d recommend!

Just this Once is Okay?

PLEASE READ THIS REVIEW ON MY BLOG: http://bookreadingtic.com/2021/10/16/... THANK YOU!

After the little monkey’s mother warned them to stay away from the mangoes because of tigers, she needed to leave. Will the monkeys listen to their mother? After she left, the only thing the monkeys could think of was how juicy and delicious those mangoes were. Then they start finding all kinds of uses for maybe and the rules.

Maybe they could just look at the mangoes, maybe they could get one mango, and maybe there weren’t any tigers. But maybe leads the little monkeys into all kinds of trouble, and they find themselves in a terrible situation.

Children will enjoy the illustrations in this over-sized, picture book because if they look closely, they can find things in the bushes that the monkeys don’t see. They can have lots of fun trying to warn the monkeys what is in there.

This book gives the parent a good opportunity to ask their child if the monkeys should have listened to their mother, and if the monkeys learned anything. You can also ask your child what they would do, and why there are rules.

“Maybe” is a fun story, but also a teaching story about what happens when trying to stretch the rules. This five-star book will be enjoyed by children aged three to seven. Little ones will love trying to warn the monkeys while stating what the monkeys should have done.

When the older monkey leaves, they warn the three little monkeys to NOT go down to the mango tree because there are tigers down there. But the little monkeys can’t stop thinking about how much they love mangos. Maybe… they could just head down and look. They see no tigers and a mango close enough to reach. They keep a close look out and quickly grab the mango. Yum! But what happens when they decide to have more mangoes and stop being careful? Tigers!

Haughton’s picture book about naughty and curious monkeys is a great read aloud. The text is made up solely of the monkeys’ dialogue with one another, so make sure you have at least four monkey voices at hand! With simple text, Haughton creates a book full of building tension that also offers a wild chase scene that will have readers merrily gasping along with the monkeys, before a final twist.

As always, Haughton’s illustrations are bold and bright. The deep blue monkeys stand out against the red backgrounds. Their simple and funny faces shine with their emotions as they pursue delicious mangos. The book expands its colors to mango yellow, rich oranges and purple/pink trees.

Gasps, giggles and glee accompany the monkeys on their adventure. Appropriate for ages 2-4.

This earned my, 5 Star Huggable award. It’s sheer brilliance! I hugged it with glee after I read it.

“Maybe we could just look,” is the question/suggestion posed by one of the three young Monkeys warned to stay well above the mango tree because there are tigers down there. And well, what’s a monkey to do when they know delicious mangoes are just hanging there. A look would be okay, wouldn’t it? And down they go!

This book grabs you from that first, whatever you do, DON’T! You know beyond any shadow of doubt they are going down to those mangoes. And so they do. After checking for tigers, there aren’t any, the monkeys, LOOK! And there are mangoes, so many, just within reach! And the, Maybe question/suggestion pops up again. Check again for tigers! Nope, no tigers. Mmmmm, so sweet, so juicy, I wish I had another. And so, down, down, no tigers, down all the way to the ground … TIGERS!!!

The brilliance of childlike thinking and reasoning is what makes this book a winner in my opinion. Chris Haughton absolutely nails it.

The bright red backgrounds beautifully portray the danger these innocents are surrounded by. The monkeys are painted in deep blues and teals with wide eyed innocent expressions. Gorgeous work!
