Fun book to read

I’ve read many books on NLP and this is the first one like this that I’ve read. I really enjoyed the section on reframing, limiting beliefs and values. I love the mix of client stories too.

‘Self-control in positive thinking depends on awareness’

Israeli author Anat Dor earned her Masters degree in Education from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem and has enjoyed a career in education, both in teaching students and in training teachers. She is also a personal coach and a Neuro-Linguistic Programmer (NLP) trainer for emotional management, relationship struggles, and trauma, as well as a bible teacher, managing the WIZO training center (Women’s International Zionist Organization), serving students with attention deficit disorders at David Yellin College, and conducting Mental Weight Loss workshops (losing weight through internal changes in the mind)!

Anat’s accessible guidance in this book, translated from the Hebrew by Noel Canin, is evident in her opening comments: ‘My father, a Holocaust survivor, was characterized by sensitivity, openness, adherence to achieving his goals and…a love of life. In his gentle, unique way, he passed on to me all this goodness, and I have tried to pass it on to my family and those close to me….For twenty-five years, I held various teaching and training positions in the education system. I reached a point where I felt I had fulfilled my self and decided to take early retirement. At this juncture in my life, transitioning between teaching Torah and facilitating personal coaching and NLP, I discovered the possibility of connecting these two wonderful fields…’ And that concept serves as the basis for this inspirational book.

Using portions of the Torah/Bible to present her points of developing self-transformation proves to be an enlightening tool for Anat’s clear communication of her concepts. For example, she opens with a portion of the book of Genesis revisiting the Cain and Abel conflict. ‘There is a correlation between thought, emotion, and behavior. Thought affects emotion, which affects behavior. Therefore, thought determines the response. The Efrat Model of Communication describes the stages of what occurs, leading from the event to the response: Event, Interpretation, Thought, Emotion, Response. When I experience an unpleasant event, an automatic, negative thought might arise in my mind, evoking in me an unhappy emotion to which I react, as happened to Cain. A negative event leads me to act out of an automatic, low and an unthought out emotion. I need to be aware of what is happening to me in these situations, to relax and allow the power of thought to open up to various, positive possibilities of thought, out of which I can choose the desired, positive response.’

It is this blend of reflection relying on biblical passages to demonstrate NPL approaches that makes Anat’s book both interesting and inspirational. This is a fine, quiet guide to finding harmony and happiness in life. Worthy of everyone’s consideration.
