Her Commanders

Rate this book
Cali has spent her entire existence hiding everything she truly is from everyone… including her family. Love isn't something she believes in. She's seen the harm that so-called emotion can cause in her own parents' relationship and wants no part of it.

Star Base Commander Jamis Dexxirs and his Sub Commander Taarig Ynn are well known for their attitudes toward females and their sexual preferences. They are Apre, one of the most powerful, long-living beings in the universe, so why settle for one female when there were so many to choose from.

Could have been worse

I usually love Eidem’s books & she is a good author that made me not hate it. It simply didn’t like the commanders.
The commanders are a long lived species that are very sexually active, they claim that that carefully pick their partners but I saw no evidence of that. C1 saw her & was attracted but immediately forgot her & started flirting another female that came onto him. An accident happened & they were trapped together & he acted very insufferable. C2 was a bit better, when he was attracted he pursued her as soon as he could. They all an encounter where the C1&C2 felt extreme emotions toward her & that scared C1 so he immediately backed off & C2 followed his lead. This is where it really ticked me off because C1 went & picked a female & took her to their room & C2 went along even though he felt they were doing wrong. They didn’t go through but only because certain events prevented them but they later claimed even if those events hadn’t happened they couldn’t completely betray her. I call hogwash, C1 didn’t seem willing to stop & completely determined to go through with it. So I didn’t like their attitude & betrayal. It was palatable because they recognized they were betrayed her & apologized for it. I did like her, she was a strong female that always pushed back when they got overbearing & was no innocent little thing (I liked that she lived her life before she met them, cause they certainly overdid theirs).

Cali, Taarig and Jamis.
I enjoyed it, but it was pretty damn ridiculous.

Oh and then there's the sex that would make Jordan Silver proud...

Cali is a human who is used to being overlooked because nobody takes Humans seriously. We have too short a life span. (Don't I know it!)
But Cali isn't really human either. She just likes to use it as camouflage.
The story starts with her watching Jamis chat up another alien woman before catastrophe slams home. Next thing you know she's locked in a one man escape pod with Jamis and he will never forget her now.

I liked Cali's character. She reminds me of Cassandra from one of MKE's other books. Also a special snowflake who kicks ass and takes names. No doormat here!
But the bad guys after Jamis and Taarig were just so OTT farcical they kinda ruined the story for me. It was bad enough to have one super crazed villain, but to have 2 !?!?
I far preferred the villain who was out to get Cali.

So there's LOTS of villains in this one.

The commanders (Jamis and Taarig) were OK. I liked Taarig, if only they could have dumped Jamis.
It's not in the same universe as the Cassandra book.

By the end I was kinda bored because Cali just superpowers ANYTHING thrown at her and her commanders.

There's 2 epilogues, but I was kinda tired of rolling my eyes by then.

Safety is OK

I'm so disappointed in this book.

Eidem's Tornian and Kalizians series are some of my all-time favorite romances. The worldbuilding is delightful and I loved all of the political intrigue mixed in with the romance, especially in Grim. The hair beads in the Kalizians series are one of my top 5 favorite soulmate indicators.

This... was not that.

Good things first: I liked the heroine! She's very independent and determined to make her own way, which is always great. She runs a bar and is really kind to her employees, which I always love to see.
I liked the way Eidem wrote triad relationships and I wanted more about not only the MCs' relationship, but more about the heroines' parents' relationship.

Everything else:

The pacing of this book was so odd! Usually, romances go like this: they meet, they fall in love, there's conflict, they resolve the conflict, then lots of smooching and a HEA or HFN, yes? This book *technically* followed that structure, but the meeting/falling in love part took most of the book! The MCs weren't all together for the majority of the book and it felt so weird. By the time they all got together, the book was 80% over, so the conflict and resolution took another 15%, and then both epilogues (yes, two epilogues) took the last 5%. It felt so uneven and weird to read.

The heroes felt really underdeveloped as characters and I think Eidem took a lot of shortcuts for establishing why they're bonded and want to have a third, so they felt like they were barely modded out of the box, you know what I mean? It's like if you bought two Ken dolls, painted their eyes different colors, and then tried to tell me they aren't Ken dolls, they're a new and different type of dolls.

Also, I kept expecting this book to somehow connect to the Tornians, Kalizians, or Imperial series, since all three had room for sequels. Hell, the end of Ull's book practically said "Stay tuned for the next book!". That connection never happened. I don't mind an author starting a new series, but since so many things are still unresolved in her other series, I was really hoping this book would give us more answers.

I had a lot of hopes for this one, but it let me down and I'm sad.

Sorry to say that I didn't love this book, I love all her other books but this one I couldn't. One of the commanders was a complete jerk and the part where they betrayed her, even if they said after that they wouldn't have gone through with it, that was too much. I like the other commander a little bit more, and I did love Cali but she should have made them grovel a lot more.

Fantastic

Absolutely fantastic I loved this book but in fairness I love all her books. The characters are do well written and I couldn’t put it down as soon as my preorder downloaded I just read it until I finished. I highly recommend this book but more I highly recommend this author. Great book!

What a nice change. Will there be more in a series or just a singular. Loved character development and another strong female.

An engrossing read. I liked the characters (a Hogg named Hamm) and the silliness of her made up language. A good story, all told.

Loved it. Great SIFI MFM manage romance

Cali Baker is an Earthian, living on a space station, and just bought the bar she had been working in for the last four years. On her way home something happened to the ship, forcing all to evacuated.
Star Base Commander Jamis Dexxis. Doesn't remember how he ended up in the pilot escape pod with the tiny Earther female. He is attracted to her and proposes a pleasurable means to pass the time until rescue. Cali isn't buying what the handsome Apre commander is selling. Once rescued they go their separate ways. Cali has secrets.
Jamis can't get the little Earthian off his mind. He and his sub Commander, best friend and bonded, Taarig Ynn, have often shared women, while looking for a Lalla they can share. While the attractive Earther 's short lifespan excludes her as a life mate, their is nothing against a no strings fling.
Cali affects Jamis in a way that sends him running. Taarig, has a similar experience. She is perfect for them, bonding her and only having her for such a short time is something Jamis can't contemplate. Taarig is not so sure. Acting on her attraction to the two Commanders, has hurt Cali in unexpected ways.
A string of troubles on the station keeps putting the three together. It takes a near death experience to bring them together. Then their is Cali's secret. Her parents to contend with.
Fun, fast paced and steamy SIFI, MFM, romance. Loved Cali, and her men. Nice epilogue to wrap up their story. Cali has even eight brothers and Xanto, her might as well be brother. Hoping they will get stories.

Great read!!😍

I'm not usually a big fan of the sci-fi/alien genre but M.K. Eidem's books seem to be the exception. This new book was no exception. I'm not certain if this book is meant to be a standalone - or the start of a brand new series - but either way, I was hooked.

WHAT I LOVED:

1) That the author wrote polyamory.

The author step outside her norm of monogamous romance and took a turn at exploring the dynamics of polyamory or a multiple person relationship - and I gotta say, "she did it beautifly!" I polyamorous stories so seeing one of my favorite authors flexing her writing chops was amazballs!

2) There is potential for brand new series.

While this was definitely a satisfying read as a standalone, there is still potential for a series. I'm kind of hoping (keeping my fingers crossed) that it does, indeed, spark a "Zaegrus" series revolving around Cali's older brothers'

3) The Setting.

I've beginning to think I might be a secret Trekkie because I absolute loved how the main characters lived in outer-space on a star base (space station). I dug the spaceships, the ear links, the vat of glowing middle gel and all the different co-mingling lifeforms.

spoilers may appear after this point in the review

WHAT I HAD MIXED FEELINGS ABOUT:

1) The background mystery that is Cali's heritage.

It was equally annoying - while simultaneously enticing.

The questions surrounding her parentage drove me nuts. I was constantly trying to put the pieces together: how she could be half-Zaegrus if both her "Mom & Dad" were supposedly born on Earth.

Did that mean her "Dad" couldn't have biological fathered her?

Had someone else fathered her?

Where exactly did the other half of her heritage come from?

It was a puzzle I was determined to figure out but still couldn't piece together.

2) Caradoc's gender

I spent the majority of the book trying to figure out Caradoc's gender. The name is ambiguous in nature and I couldn't readily determine a specific gender like I would for Paul and Dakota. It took some time (roughly about 75% into the book) to determine if "Caradoc" was male or female.

3) The nature of her parents triad.

The author doesn't come out and explain upfront what gender her parents triad includes two of. You know her Mom is obviously Earthen, which left me thinking Paul was Zaegrus - because she talked about his "gifts" - and that explained Cali's heritage.

4) The forced Mating/Melding.

Her "Dad" was forced into a mating/melding with the Paramount (aka Caradoc) ...which made me think (assume) "Caradoc" must be a woman for some reason! It took some time to work out that Cali's use of the words "Dad" and "Father" was specific and used to denote two different males!

If I had known upfront I might have clued in to that distinction sooner.

5) Who her biological "father" is.

In the story the commander and sub-commander become "part Zaegrus" when they melded/mate with Cali. So, likewise, her Mom & Paul would have also become "part Zaegrus" after their melding - so Caradoc IS responsible for the Zaegrus portion of Cali's heritage. I know that both men considered her their daughter, but only one can be the biological father (unless there something I missed) and I couldn't figure out which Male it was.

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE:

1) How abruptly the story ended

Ending the story on a conflict that wasn't resolved by the last chapter was disconcerting. While the some of the conflict was addressed and eventually resolved with the multiple time-gap epilogue, it wasn't my favorite aspect of the story.

There were too many unresolved issue between Cali and her parents.

I wanted a heart to heart between Cali and her "Father" - the paramount; they had other issues to address besides just his attacking her mates. They needed to discuss how she perceived him after viewing her mother's memories, why what she saw caused her pushing him out of her life, the fact that she hid her gifts from her not just him but from her parents in general, and the reason she felt she needed to do that.

Some of that was brought to her mother but as it was "Caradoc" she had the issue with and it felt like she needed to address it with him/as well.

That parental relationship should've been fixed prior to the ending the story.

2) The epilogue.

In my opinion - the epilogue - should only happen after everything is resolved in the story. It should have a "sneak peek" of their future. Therefore it should have solely revolved around her being pregnant, wanting to settle down with a permanent home near her parents, and showcasing the fact that the relationship with her parents was back on track.

Instead, it was used to bring resolution to an outstanding conflict with her parents.

So, again, not my ideal ending.

Despite that flaw (in my opinion) I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend to others without hesitation!!

Damn I definitely shouldn’t start another book for gods sake ... I really don’t know what to do with me anymore hahaha but guys I LOVE alien books and being a RH too? hehehe one of my favorite kind of book and yeah I look like a junkie trying to justify my addiction.

I’m liking Cali she’s a little sarcastic and funny , Jamis is funny too , when he first meet her , he actually thought he saved himself and Cali? What a cocky bastard just my kind of guy , and WTF is Cali ? She absolutely doesn’t sound like a normal human . I’m definitely already liking this book their bickering is so refreshing. I’m really intrigued ...Cali has a big secret and I’m so f*cking curious .

Cali is awesome...I’m seriously the girl doesn’t accept sh*t of no one , she is absolutely a badass and so f*cking strong , I love her character . I’m finding so interesting the things about the world building and the culture of the beings , I like the book isn’t just from one POV . Cali species is so intriguing and secretive, I think she is a lot more than she let the eyes see .

Damn ... with Jamis is HOT , Taarig is INTENSE I’m really liking them . Cali uses the best outfits EVERRRR hahaha I’m seriously the girl has confidence !! The sex in this book is another level hot ... look I read a lot of these kind of books hehehe but I really, REALLY liked the sex in this one , has a perfect balance and is explicit in a way you don’t get bored or overwhelmed with details *fans myself * .

Hahaha Cali’s Dad is really whoa , I’m really curious about Cali’s family...seriously this got me “ruking” intrigued and I’m thinking about always using this “Ruk” word because is more easy duh!

I’m getting confoundingly pissed with Jamis and his xenophobic reasoning. Damn I like Xanto and want him with her too ...and Cali’s family dynamics is really and when I say really I mean it I’m so ruking intrigued that I want a book about them . Hahaha Jamis doesn’t want to think about himself like petty or childish but guess what ? He ruking is !!! But he is forgiven because this happens uh ?

Damn it the Epilogue ...whoa hahaha I’m still astonished with how many years passed well when you’re immortal things have another perspective and how family fights are hahahaha I really liked this book that was so much more than I expected this was a wonderful surprise, but I missed some M/M action like ...are you kidding me ? They are mates and they don’t ruck ? I didn’t liked particularly this because was like had a wall ... I think the relationship between the three of them could be better if they all you know ...got really together, don’t get me wrong they ruck Cali together but Jamis and Taarig don’t ruck each other so I missed it because the relationship look unbalanced...and the same happens with her parents, damn this is a RH !!! How can it not have M/M action ?!

Mixed review. Some 4 star and some 2 star

First I love this authors Tornians, Kalizians and imperial series. They are the best sci fi romance out there by far. I have reread and relistened to them 3-4 times.

This one is not even close and for that readon it greatly disappoints. It is more in the line of her “kiss” series which you wonder how they could even be written by the same person. Ok so now the specifics of why I did or did not like this particular book

—-author is a good story teller with surprises and action She creates supporting characters you like The book is not boring

—strong, smart and caring lead heroine. This is a hallmark in all of her books

—-interesting world building although she does much less of it in this book then the others I love

—-I almost think the author must be going through a life crisis where she is really angry or disgusted with the male sex. It comes through. The males she creat as hero’s were jerks and never really did anything heroic throughout the book. The heroine fell for them because of physical attraction and good sex. There was nothing that should “trigger anyone by their actions but who would want them but someone superficial which the heroine was not supposed to be

—- sex was a very very casual thing for everyone and almost meant nothing. Maybe that is what it is like in this world but it is not really what I like to read about in the romance books

—-I did not see one heroic act out of the hero’s. Not one. It is hard to be excited about a book who portrays men as hero’s without showing one example of it. They also were not very smart to see certain things.

I only hope and pray this author reverts away from these books amd back to her roots

An enjoyable sci-fi romance.

I thought this sci-fi romance was fairly enjoyable because the heroine was a deeply sympathetic and nuanced character. However, I could not stand one of the heroes. I typically prefer alpha heroes in my romance novels, but this guy was terrible. He was selfish, cruel, and egotistical. It stretched my credulity to believe this guy would be capable of being a good lover. Selfish, entitled men are rarely interested in a woman’s pleasure in real life. Aside from that, the plot was high stakes and tight, with plenty of action and danger. The political maneuvering was quite interesting to read about. The heat level was three to four chili peppers. The world building was vibrant and interesting also. I went back and forth between giving this novel three stars or four stars. It was pretty well written, but the hero mentioned above was incredibly unattractive, which is exactly the reaction I don’t want to have when reading a romance novel. It has been a long time since I read a novel by M. K. Eidem, since her rate of releases is so slow, but I don’t remember her other sci-fi romance novel heroes being so off-putting. A mixed bag of a book.

I’ve enjoyed this author’s books in the past and I enjoyed her writing style again. There were a few little things that bugged me (spelling errors and aspects of the hero’s personality and actions) but overall I enjoyed it and I wish there were more books by this author available to read. It feels like ages since she released a book, that’s why I read this one despite not being keen on the whole triad thing.

**spoilers**
What was up with the heroes both getting so carried away during that they badly hurt the heroine the first time they had sex? That was not sexy or romantic. Sure it supposedly made her different from their ‘other women’ but not in a good way. The heroine actually thought to herself that if she’d been human she would’ve been severely injured - and since the heroes did think she was fully human, that’s horrible and frankly inexcusable for such experienced men. She screamed in pain and then had to use her powers to heal her vagina before they could continue with sex 🙈

Ummm

I loved her beginning books, the newest ones seem to just be serial books. Like 10 cent copies of what she can really do. This book and this newly discovered world had the ability to be awesome. There was a powerful new type of species that would have been awesome to explore, but the character ls were too blase and had me cringing 😬. Jamis was a jerk that Didn't redeem himself. Those two continuously hurt the main character and she just keeps accepting it. Unhealthy relationship for party of 3... for being an all powerful being she was certai lying blase about being hurt by these two... a simple sorry and she's good. Even cheating. Like wth. I knew about this book from day 1 of release but was weary of betting it because her dragon books, while entertaining were too short to purchase and woefully incomplete. When I read the sample, it reminded me of the style of writing that first caught my attention when she first wrote Grim. This is a shame. No more doormats for female characters please. Ms. Eidem is capable of way better.

Sci-fi romance, two bangs and a buck and tada. Anyhow it is what it is. No really relatable characters, some do annoy the shit out of you (can we say the main commander). It also felt like this was once a F?/M? romance (all characters are not human). Then someone tried to pin in another M?. He kept coming across as an addition. The main FC would say something about liking the main commander (really there was nothing to like about him), then tack on the better other guy like an after thought. It was always she like him, then she would say "and the other guy." I don't know, it just sounded a little weird. I've seen it handled better. The funny thing was the second commander was more gracious, lovable, patient, and sacrificing even going to the point of giving up a career to stay with the main commander. He was admirable all the way and the main commander was like an irritating wart attached to his butt that wanted control all of the time. I loved it when the second commander finally just told the main commander he had just as much to gain in his relationship with the FMC as he did and just as important, and if he was going to have a immature hissy fit every time something went wrong he could just do it on his own time it was his problem and he was tired being dragged into his pouts and that he was going find his mate.

This book felt a little different to others of M. K. Eidems, but all the qualities of her wonderful narratives are present. Once again she builds a universe of alien species, a governance system and an intriguing plot.

What I liked:

- I loved hearing about the different species and their personality quirks. It makes me wonder what the defining traits of our species will be one day.

- Our main character had some cool abilities that she used to improve the lives of others around her, she was fair and her position didn't go to her head.

What could have been improved:

- The relationship development between the main characters felt a little rushed to me on this story. They slept together early on and their initial connections seemed to be solely physical. I would have liked more on the development of feelings between the characters.

Overall a good read by a fabulous author. I recommend the author to anyone that loves sci-fi romance with great world building.

Vintage Michelle Eidem. Instant classic for me.

I just finished "Her Commanders", and as with everything you write, I loved it.

I can't find a clue on whether this is the beginning of a new serie, which I highly hope it is. I find the Zagreus fascinating, and I am not ready to say goodbye to Cali Jamis and Taarig, yet. Specially with a little bundle on the way! Caradoc is also really intriguing, and I hope we'll see more of him.

Keep writing incredible stories! You have touched my life with so many of them. Grim and the Tornians, Kirall and Autumn, are stories that I've read too many times to count, and I know it will be the same with Cali and her Commanders. I've already read it back to back twice, to grab what I might have missed the first time.

God bless you for sharing your talent with us all, and for creating bigger than life characters we root for and fall in love with until we feel like we've known them all our lives.

Different.......

I liked the story, but it was certainly different from say, The Tornians Series, The Kiss Series, or The Challenge Series. For me, the whole style of writing was different. I can't exactly put my finger on it, but I can only say, different!!!! If it's the start of a series, I'll certainly continue to buy them. If it was a standalone, I'm glad I read it!! M. K. Eidem is an autobuy author for me. If it's got her name on it, I'll automatically buy it!! She's that good!! My main disappointment is that it WASN'T a book from one of her established series. I LOVE THE TORNIANS, SO MUCH!!!! Oh well, maybe next time!!! Ooooh, or a new book from The Challenge Series would be awesome!!! I love M. K. Eidem!!!!!

Cali, Jamis and Taarig

Exceptional does not come close to describing how very much I enjoyed this story. I wasn’t sure about the Triad, but it was done beautifully. I was captivated by the snappy dialogue, the interaction of the characters, the whole approach to the triad. I saw several reviews that were adamantly opposed to Jamis and his treatment of women. I read this book, skipping nothing, and I don’t think they read the same one I did. There is growing pains, changing from a player to a committed man. There were reasons why there was hesitancy, as there are in most romance novels. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Was there a book on the Supreme Commander, Dakota and the Carradoc’s romance? It seems familiar. Highly recommend. Please write more books!

Science fiction romance

This book was a (good) surprise release for me. I must have missed that the author was working on a new story.
I was unsure if I would like this story for a couple of chapters. Jamis was a bit too arrogant and Cali was... I want to say she was too strong a personality, but that isn't quite right. I liked Taarig.
This takes place on a Space Station. Jamis is the Commander, Taarig is Sub Commander and Cali is the new owner of the most popular bar. There is more to Cali than anyone knows. There are some interesting species. I would love to hear more about Cali's family and about Xanto.

The beginning of a grand new world

I loved these people! The world building was so thoroughly thought out. The complex relationships with friends and family was entertaining. The base sounded like an interesting place to be. Jamis drove me batty with his utter arrogance. I laughed and cried with these characters. Calli was a bad a$$ and nice too. My favorite secondary character was Xondo. I want to know more about him. Also her many brothers have to be having some exciting times. I’d love to read Callis parents story. I sure hope there is more coming from this world.

Really loved it!!

Ms. Eidem is one of my favorite authors. This is a terrific addition to my library. The world building and blending of time and space is remarkable. The characters and romance are believable and relatable, although I wanted to slap Jamiss upside the head a time or two. I very much enjoyed this book and devoured it in one day. If you like a strong female lead and a little mystery thrown in with your hot alien men then I highly recommend this one!

I am always glad to read anything by this author. This book was a great surprise and amazingly done. M.K. went outside her comfort zone and created a new universe that I can't wait to read more about. This book showcased individuality and acceptance of people for whom they are. Something that is needed more in our societies all around the world.
I was able to leave the reality of a Covid infected world and travel into space with amazing characters.
Thank you Michelle!

I didn't want to read this book at first because I thought it would only be an erotic one. What a mistake!!! Of course it is quite sensual and at time super hot 😆😆 there is also a real story and beautiful and deep characters behind.
I loved this new univers and alien species. I would have been so happy if the story went on longer but I will be as happy to read a side story or a sequel and see more of these characters!!!

Not her best but still worth reading.

I liked this book but was not really in love with the female character as she seemed slutty and too foul mouthed. The guys were man whores. This just didn't seem like her usual storytelling**it seemed that the characters were sleazy all the way around but once I got past that, the story was good. Hated the foul words, some were unnecessary.

Wonderfully entertaining

I have been looking for a story that had action and romance in equal measure. The plot is page turning addictive since the author has written it so well that the characters feel as real as their struggles and you are swept along on this wonderful journey culminating in a happy ending. I recommend this book and look forward to reading more by M.K. Eidem.
