Sundance #4

Shattered

Rate this book
A telepath with a lethal twist.

My name is Neely and I live among shapeshifters in the desert truckstop town of Sundance, California. As a telepath-spiker, I can read a person's thoughts.

I can also spike deadly power straight into their brain.

Since narrowly escaping a paranormal prison with my life, I made a promise to use my abilities to protect myself and my friends—including my boyfriend, alpha leader, Lucas Blacke.

No more hesitation, no more second-guessing, no more rules.

My epiphany comes at the perfect time. My life in Sundance is more dangerous than ever–the shifter attacks on me haven't slowed, I'm battling enemies within the Blacke group, and now there's a powerful new beast with the ability to climb inside my head, hunting me.

In the past, I sat back and waited for my enemies to attack. No more. This time, I'm taking the fight to them.

For readers who enjoy urban fantasy with a side order of romance, fast-paced action, and a dash of humor.

I had some real problems with the last book in this series, and so I waffled on whether to read this book. And the stuff that bothered me in the last book persisted through this one, so I was mostly unhappy.

I just don't have a lot of patience for the leads allowing people who harm them fucking terribly - the evil trancer in the last book (and yes, he is evil, I don't give a fuck what his reasons are - abducting someone and participating in their torture makes you evil, full stop), Dan, her father, the list goes on and on - go on with zero fucking consequences. Neely's determination to keep Lucas at arm's length got old two books ago, as did her insistence that she do everything herself alone.

I don't particularly like Neely anymore, and I definitely don't respect her or Lucas and his pack. I actually laughed out loud at the bullshit when this book revealed that Chandra talked Lucas out of punishing Dan for his shit in the last book. In what universe is that a good idea for any shifter group? Not punishing betrayal simply invites more betrayal. And no, allowing him to be challenged isn't a punishment - he could and would have been challenged for position anyway. That's how packs work.

I loathe her father. Literally loathe ... even that word doesn't feel strong enough for what an utter bag of shit I think he is. He's no father. Just a fucking sperm donor.

That all said, I think I'll probably read the next book, because the end of this book made it seem like finally - finally! - there is going to be some growth that ends most of the stupid bullshit that bugs me the most. So we'll see.

OMG... loved it!

This was the book I’ve been waiting for in the series. We finally get the truth about Neely and her abilities, plus there was a hell of a surprise in store for everyone. There is also a newer bigger threat to Neely and Shifters in general emerging, her father is still lying like a rug, more betrayal ensues, and on the home front.... well, Dan has really crossed the line this time.

Loved every second I spent binging this. Only downside is I have to wait for the next book to see what happens after Neely’s final comment.

These always start a little slow, but this one was really good. (They're all really good.) I really enjoyed how the magic system has expanded.

As a standalone book I loved it. It was an intricately crafted problem and the solution was a fun read. As a series I am getting kinda tired of the same format. XYZ group wants her spiker ability, they either abduct her or manipulate the situation etc and the end result is a confrontational showdown.

I love the diversity in terms of people of different races having prominent roles and I love how diverse the Sundance pack is with lots of different types of weres being welcome there.

I dont know why she was so shocked, I saw the twist at the end coming a mile away. The clues and hints were all there in prior books, but I am looking forward to the next book and hoping desperately that this time it does not follow that pattern.

This book is probably the best in the series. The things I complained about not being addressed enough or prevalent come to the front here. And it's done well. Neely's growth, her and Lucas' growth, the mate bond, the main plot is developed well, the B plot is done well (OOOOOOOOOOOOOO that end was great), and just overall I liked it and enjoyed it and will probs read this one specific book again.

So, why only four stars? I honestly don't know. When I finished reading this book, I had no interest in reading any more Sundance books. Yea, there is still development to happen and questions that need answering, but I just...had no interest anymore. It could just be me and that's 100% fine and why I did 4 stars and not 3. The whole series is building up to the things that happened and are revealed in this book. I don't know if I'll read Shifted (Sundance 5), specifically right away or not, but damn it was a good ride.

Ok, so I quite enjoyed the previous books, though there were some things that were annoying. I won't be continuing because these "small" things kept happening throughout the series and I'm just done reading it.
I did like the story and the mystery behind the FMC's origins and powers. That's probably the only thing that kept me going.
The things that bothered me probably won't bother other people, but for me, they just made me roll my eyes, and once that happens, I know I'm done with a book.

1- The FMC started off alright, but then turned into the type of heroine that annoys me. The "I'm such a strong woman and I don't need a man to help me, and I can do it all on my own. blah, blah, blah and then gets herself into a situation. I might be picky when it comes to my heroines but I like a good mix of independence and vulnerability without stupidity. To give you an idea, my favorite FMC in UF is Kate Daniels, nuf said.

2-She kept refusing to join the MMC's group/pack because the didn't want him to have "power" over her. At first, I understood, and it made sense, but once all the drama that followed her kept happening and she still refused, the stupidity was just too much. Again, I'm all for a strong heroine but not at the cost of her common sense.

3-I didn't like how little we saw the MMC. This is not strictly a romance book, so, I understand that the romance here isn't the driving force of the plot. That doesn't usually bother me, so, I think I just didn't like THE WAY it was done here.

4-Lastly, I didn't like how the author forced certain PC terms and ideas into this book. I won't go in depth but it just felt forced and unnecessary for the story.

As a whole, I'm disappointed that I got this far in the series and just couldn't continue.

It feels so good to be back in the world of Neely and Lucas. Once again, Shifters come to Sundance for the sole purpose of either kidnapping Neely or talking her into joining her pack. She is sick and tired of all of the disruptions and damages to her panderia but this time something else’s is going on and it has the potential to take away the one thing Neely values most, her freedom.

There are new bad guys in town and they are known as legion. They are a collective of sorts kind of like the Borg is Star Trek. They want to break Neely down only to rebuild her in to suit their needs and become their weapon. They have freaky skills that messes with your mind and causes delusions.

To make matters worse, Dan and his wife, Farrah, are outwardly hostile towards Neely to the point she no longer wants him to guard her. His position as third in the pack is challenged and soon he will know a new kind of fear.

Neely decides to go into offensive mode by taking the upcoming fight away from Sundance and into Texas. This is where she fight her enemies, unveil some traitors and finally discover her true heritage. There is plenty of sizzle, action and intrigue in this series and each installment is consistently good. I for one appreciate this about C.P. Rider. Additionally I like the fact I don’t have to wait a long time in between installments. The next book will be out soon and I can’t wait!

‘Shattered’ is book five in C.P. Rider’s The Sundance series. Previous books in series are recommended to be read prior to this.

Seriously how much trouble can one Spiker-Telepath attract? It would seem like a lot. Once again Neely, Lucas, The Blacke Group and Tower Witches find themselves under attack from a new enemy, hell bent on making Neely their weapon.

Again I find myself not liking Neely’s attitude. How much more does Lucas have to do to prove his loyalty, devotion and love to her. She is so stuck in her ways that she could make things so much easier for them both, but no her stubbornness just gets in the way again and again.

We don’t get to see much of Lucas, The Blacke Group or Tower Witches in this book. But we do get to spend some time with an ally from Austin Texas and his pack.

I love seeing the loyalty, love, respect and devotions from every character from the Blacke Security Team, Tower Witches and Neely. The witty banter and Friendly teasing between these characters helps balance out the heaviness from all the attacks and threats to Neely’s life at Sundance.

So much happens in this book, challenges, threats, death, betrayal, rescues, kidnappings, transformations and so much. I loved every moment of this nail biting, edge of your seat action packed roller coaster.

Nice to see the relationship between Neely and Lucas develop further - realistic hang ups, arguments and reconciliation. But it’s often a little difficult to figure out why so many people like Neely so much as throughout the series there isn’t much personality that comes through other than persistent denial and we don’t get much development of relationships outside of Lucas. The story line was a little weak for my liking - it felt like the story could have been told much more quickly. The first two books were much better, than the third and fourth. These last two books (and it looks like the fifth) all feel like the author decided to add in a longer plot line but it feels a bit rushed in conception and long winded in writing. There’s also some secret keeping with poor motivation and potentially disastrous consequences from someone who is meant to be smart - so really the secrets are there to add some shocks without being consistent with the characters involved. I feel pretty conflicted since despite all this, I still quite like this series in general.

Wow! What a great book, there were some surprises that I didn’t see coming.
Neely is being hunted again, this time by a strange wolf that manages to get inside her head and create nasty illusions. Saying that she must join a group, Legion, and help the war against paranormals, a little contradictory I thought.
After a few encounters with this wolf and a discussion, it is decided that Neely will leave town and visit Alpha Juan in Texas. The strange wolf seems to be Juan’s missing brother. This way the danger will be drawn away from Sundance. To avoid alpha problems, Amir accompanies Neely on her trip.
Naturally nothing goes as planned, there are more attacks on Neely’s mind, her father doesn’t show up for a meeting. There is magic involved but no one is really sure what type.
This is one of those books that is hard for me to review without giving up more information on the story.
There is action, magic, suspense, big surprises, and humour.
This is a great book, as are all of the books in this series so far.
It is definitely a series I will be highly recommending.

Finally- spoiler- finally she is going to join the group. Not until the bitter end of course, but finally!

This book was a game changer, lots of action and a new bad guy "Legion". At the beginning of the book I was getting pretty annoyed with Neely. She went all over the place in the dead of night and left herself vulnerable over and over. This was getting very tiring to us all, me and the characters... all of whom I love except for Farrah and Dan. Time for them to go!

Neely ends up in illusion land due to dire wolves power (?), which is kind of all over the place. She helps Gil, helps Alpha Juan, helps her Dad, helps all kinds of people without helping herself, so finally by joining the group, she is helping herself.

Oh, and she is now a wolf! Not sure why she didn't have Lucas help her but it made for a good scene with her naked in Juan's lap after a change. Poor Lucas, what he puts up with just so he gets to taste her cookies! lol

Another great book in the series. I still love it and can’t wait to see what happens next.

However I’m starting to feel that something needs to change. Every book so far has dealt with someone wanting to take Neely away and it’s getting a little old. Even though in this fourth book the scope is bigger and she isn’t the ultimate prize rather one of the prizes the baddies are after. But having to deal with problems that aren’t caused by someone wanting to snatch Neely would be nice.

Regarding that ending and what will happen after that last sentence, I hope Neely doesn’t backtrack in the next book. I’ve seen it a lot in series where a character moves forward only to go back to square one in the next book. So if Neely trusts Lucas now, for the love of god let her keep trusting him.

It would be nice to see Neely and Lucas more comfortable with each other instead of all the secrets.

Loved Neely and Lucas

"Back off, Blacke. I need to sample those," I snapped. He smiled at me, mouth full of pastry. "I can tell you right now. They're delicious." "You are not exactly discerning when it comes to pastries." "Take that back. I'm discerning. I just happen to have a sweet tooth for Mexican pastries, mi galleta azúcar." He waggled his brows at me and I rolled my eyes. "Where did you learn to say sugar cookie in Spanish?" "I asked Auntie Gert." He was so pleased with himself that I had to smile. Then I looked at the plate of pan dulce. He'd only left me one of each kind. "Glutton," I muttered. "Mean." Lucas polished off the last of his elote. "You should have said it in Spanish. I bet it sounds nicer. Most things sound nicer in Spanish."

I laughed reading this part. ^ Grab a copy of Shattered and settle in for a fascinating story.

I hate her father. I don't understand why she is still willing to put up with him since he lies about literally everything! But I'm glad to see that Neely is finally becoming better able to take care of herself. And maybe its my own ability to hold a grudge but I didn't like how she just keeps forgiving everyone. Her dad and Lucas even though none of the, prepared her or even alerted her to the possibility of her being a shifter. I don't care if it was likely or not, she needed to know it was a possibility so she wouldn't be blindsided like she was. I can understand her dad never tells the truth and her uncle was just following what her father told him to do but for Lucas not to tell her is a betrayal I can believe she just got over it in an hour.

Alpha Juan’s heard rumors of his missing brother’s location. Neely knows exactly where he is… partially. The dire wolf is in Sundance attempting to get Neely to follow him to be re-made. Amir escorts Neely to Juan’s ranch in Austin to lure his brother there while Neely attempts to delve into his mind and find the mastermind of the plot to zombie-fy supernaturals.

Changes in Lucas’ pack are being laid at Neely’s feet as Dan loses his position while the pack overall seems more accepting of her. Neely continues to agonize over her relationship with Lucas as she re-discovers more about herself (and stomps her foot that no one told her).

Broken but better - resilient!

My goodness! This book was epic!

We finally found out about her origin - what she truly was. We learned about her mother and her gifts as well as her life. We learned a little more about her father. The Dire Wolf situation was intense. The spiking ability at the different levels was eye opening. The repercussions and the remedy left a lot to think about - she has to spike, but the cost is great but then again the answer to this issue is true trust.
I enjoyed it even more once I got to 50% of the book because it definitely picked up from there. Fantastic read!

I love this book, it is a really good series, although her dragging her heels over joining Lucas has had me screaming with frustration. It does get resolved in the end though one way or another. In terms of what's happening, she is having to fend off people wanting her to join their group and whining about it, even though she could have saved herself the entire aggro by just joining the person she is supposed to love. She does however learn more about her past, who she is and come up against a very powerful enemy whom she has yet to fully defeat connected to the sanctuaries but isn't the government.

Could not put it down

I really ...really...truly was trying to savor this book. I know the next one doesn't come out for a while, so I wanted to spread out the love. I ment to read it over a week. I ended up reading it over night (with work in the morning) and never fell asleep.

My only part I didn't like was there wasn't a lot of Neely and Lucas together in the book. However it really forced Neely to realize key things..what to know the key things..then read the book

Going to Texas

I dire wolf who can invade a persons mind and create elaborate illusions is trying to recruit Neely to help them destroy paranormal sand shifters with an end goal of enslaving humans. Neely must travel to Texas to help Alpha Juan Martinez find his missing brother and defeat this new threat. Neely’s dad goes missing, too, and she must find a way to stop this group and save her dad and Juan’s brother Gil.

Book one was ok. I was hoping for progress and there is none. Neeley is TSTL, her ongoing determination to do things on her own and to not join the pack is getting tiresome and repetitive. She is in denial about the danger she is in, how many alpha kidnappers have to show up before the light bulb comes on. I had hopes for this series, a minority MC with a unique power but I am done at this point.

Wonderful story

This just gets better and better. So exciting and mysterious at the same time. If you haven't read this series I suggest you go to the first one. It will make more sense. Plus, you have to read the series, otherwise you will miss out on an amazing story. The characters are phenomenal and each of them bring such wonderful things to the story. Time to go to the next one😁

Keep getting better and better

The Sundance series leaves Sundance for Austin for just a bit. Long enough for Neely to come in to her inheritance and find out more about her mother, father and the truth of who and what she is. Battles with prehistoric and mind mages bring out the worst and best in Neely and she eventually saves the day with help from her friends, old and new.

I love the writing of CP Rider. I love that every single character is written as a mature adult, sometimes they don't behave like one but even when they do something silly or childlike (as immature) they are mature enough to go back and work it out as adults. I really enjoy the way all of them talk about what's going on with them. Communication is the key, and Ms. Rider doesn't play the miscommunication (or lack of it) game, and if she does, it's rapidly solved by talking.

Wow!

What a ride this chapter of Neely’s journey is - introducing more great players (love auntie Gert 😄) and taking the phrase mind bending to another level. I didn’t think I could get more involved with the characters *holds hand up and admits I was wrong* 🤚🏼 this series continues to get better and better and I’m loving it!

This was boring and took forever to get through. It's like the author has a list of greatest hits and they are: Chandra's leather; Prickly Pear Margarita's; the family door bell; the discussion of crossbreeds and induction to the pack; and her little house on the prairie pajamas.
It's getting old.
No, sorry. It got old.
And fast.

I loved this book. Newly is an unlikely heroine, doubting her power and strength. Loved she has her witches to watch her back. But most of all I love her boyfriend, strong, funny and she's got her!

Awesome

This was really good. I liked that it went into depth about Neelys power. Also Lucas I just love him. I'd love for C.P. Rider to write a series about the Martinez shifters. That would be good. Overall awesome book. Can't wait until the next one.
