A collection of 13 award-winning short stories (true crime/narrative non-fiction) concerning the true adventures of California Fish and Game Wardens and the wildlife-destroying outlaws they pursue. These stories illustrate the wide variety of wildlife-related problems wardens face in California, which has a greater diversity of wildlife and wildlife habitat than any other state and is second only to Alaska in its vast expanses of wilderness.

The life of a game warden is pretty interesting. These true stories gave me an insight into their job and how tedious and frustrating it can be. The quote by one warden sums up justice, "We catch them, they let them go." "They" meaning the judges. It definitely seems like a thankless job and I'm sure most law enforcement officers feel the same way.
I enjoyed all these stories but my favorite was The Ghosts of Tipper Slough. I also enjoyed the bonus audio chapter Combat Fishing. I had a blast listening to that story being told.
One thing I would have enjoyed being added to this book is a glossary. Some words and phrases known only to the hunting community and game wardens were unknown to me. Thank to Librarything for this free book and the opportunity to read and review it.
Collection of true cases solved by California wardens of that state's Department of Fish and Wildlife. Most involve poaching and illegal killing of game. Some also involve drug "busts" and one involves the draining of a wetland, which kills the birds, fish, and animals that call it home. This has led to a monster wildfire with much destruction and loss of human life. This book has given me a window into the danger faced by these wardens and patience needed to bring the miscreants to justice. The author is a 30-year veteran of that organization, now retired. I thank LibraryThing for an ARC.
I enjoyed this non-fiction account of what Game Warden's do in their jobs. I received this for free and I voluntarily chose to review this. I've given it a 4.5* rating. I found it interesting and enlightening. I was shocked in some cases at what these perps would do. Partly this is because I never thought it through before. As property owners where wildlife roams at bit, we have to consider who we let hunt on our property. I appreciate the opportunity to read this. Would be good for landowners to read.
This is a fantastic series by a former California Game Warden. Each volume is a series of stories of the brave men and women in charge of protecting our wildlife. The poachers and others they face are awful and too often don’t receive the punishment they deserve from some of the judges. I love listening to the creative ways the wardens plan and catch the bad guys in the act. The story of the loss of the wetland was truly heartbreaking. The audiobooks are a fantastic addition to the books. I hope we get more stories.
This was a very short read but filled with great stories involving game wardens and their often dangerous work. I'd like to read the other Seasons. It takes a special person to do what they do, often without backup.
I'd like to thank LibraryThing for a copy for my review. It's been months since I've won a book from Goodreads so I am very appreciative.
