Cruel Curses #1

Clouded By Envy

Rate this book
He only ever wanted to be human. She only ever wanted to save him. Sometimes the very thing you wish for, is your undoing...

Brenik has always been envious of his twin sister, Bray. Everything always came naturally to Bray, even after crossing through a portal from their fae world, while Brenik spent his time in her shadow. So, when Brenik discovers a way to get what he has always desired—to become human—he takes it. However, the gift turns out to be a curse that alters him in ways he never saw coming.

Bray can’t help but be concerned for her brother, more so when he vanishes. While waiting for Brenik to return, she meets two brothers who realize she is not the least bit human. Her dark bat-like wings are proof of that. But somehow, an aching bond forms between Bray and the older brother, Wes.

When Bray reunites with Brenik, she finds an overpowering need for blood stirring deep within him. If Bray doesn’t help Brenik put an end to his curse, it will not only damage those who get close to him, but it could also destroy whatever is blooming between her and Wes.

Perfect for fans of Sarah J. Mass, Jennifer L. Armentrout, and Holly Black. Clouded By Envy is the first installment in this highly addictive series with enticing shifters, scorching romance, and morally gray characters.

In my quest to become a more well-read and genre-diverse connoisseur of great literature, I often pick up a book that I think will be one thing yet turns out to be something quite different in a wonderfully shocking and engaging way. I've read several novels written or co-written by Candace Robinson in the past, but when the opportunity to read her upcoming release, Clouded by Envy, arose, I had to jump on it -- initially from the cover alone. What is that!?! I bet you want to know... it's gorgeous and captivating and peculiar and oddly sensual, don't you think? Throw in the always-intriguing concept and deadly sin of envy (I'm Roman Catholic, so my repression requires me to love it) and you've got all the makings of a fine book. Guess what? It totally lives up to that hype!

I'd classify it as science-fiction, fantasy, young adult, re-appropriation of a few fairy tales, and life advice. There are two worlds. There are twins who were abandoned by their parents. When they're magically transported to a human environment, and they only look human at certain points in their lives, there's bound to be a plethora of page-turning scenes, intense thrills, heart-stopping emotions, and a few eye squints -- at least for me because I kept finding myself trying to guess how it could possibly end given the different themes encircling this complex story.

Robinson excels at capturing the young adult voice of someone yearning to escape and find whatever's missing in their heart or mind. She draws you in based on the sadness of what's happening to a seemingly kind and lovable character, then tosses you to the wolves with a scene so crazy or shocking, you no longer know what to believe. After being tossed around a bit, you develop your own sense of connection and wait for the next shoe to drop. In this case, the characters often forget to wear shoes, so it's kinda fun to see how that eventually plays out (just including a little side humor so after you read the book, you'll get what I am saying here)!

If you like something different, or something you know well but that's been turned upside and written from the perspective of a non-human creature, you'll enjoy this novel. It's on the shorter side in page count which makes it easy to get through in a few hours one afternoon or evening. It's also something you can put down and pick up again without feeling lost. The story is told in alternating perspectives from the twin protagonists, but there's a few other character POV's sprinkled from time to time so you see what's happening in totality. What a ride! I look forward to seeing everyone's thoughts and reactions when it's officially released in early 2019. I got lucky and received an ARC (thank you) which made me quite happy... this is the 4th or 5th book I've read by the author... always leaves me thirsting for the next one.

Clouded By Envy by Candace Robinson is a fantasy read that to me falls into a bit more new adult than young adult content or for a more mature YA audience. The story is told mainly from the points of view of the two main characters in it, Bray and Brenik, alternating their chapters.

Bray and Brenik are twins that are faerie like creatures that most resemble bats and were born in another world. Bray was the first born and stronger of the twins with Brenik being the weaker and from the moment they were born the twins only had one another as they were abandoned simply for their being the two of them.

Bray and Brenik were also born into a world in which they were prey and always in danger but the pair were able to cross over into our world. In this world Brenik’s envy of his sister continues and while Bray makes friends with some humans Brenik follows a much darker path.

Having read several of Candace Robinson’s previous books I have come to expect to find an extremely engaging and creative story. From the moment you lay eyes upon the cover of this one you can’t help but be intrigued and think what the heck is this?? But believe me as amazingly outstanding the covers to her books are Candace has the content to back them up and they are even more unique and definite page turners. With Clouded By Envy being a fairly short read it was still packed with plenty of action and fully fleshed out characters and plot which made it easy to fly through in one sitting being anxious to see how it would all turn out.

I received an advance copy from the author, many thanks to Candace Robinson for allowing me to once again read early.

If Holly Black and Sarah J. Maas had a book baby it wouldn't be far from this.

Clouded by Envy follows the split perspective of twins, Brenik and Bray. They were forced to flee from their own world and enter the human sphere when hunters sought to consume them. Their bat-like features and winged bodies made them an anomaly here, but they learnt that humans can hold inside of them an extraordinary kindness, even for beings so other than themselves.

As well as traversing a new world together, the twins also have each others differences to contend with, for they might be born of the same womb but definitely do not inhabit the same mindset. Brenik, ever jealous of his sister's natural advancements in life, seeks to make a deal that only the devil himself would deem fair and the potential for disaster proves imminent.

What begun as a light yet intriguing tale soon turned to the darkly Gothic, as classic literature influences infiltrated the text. Just as in Robinson's other novels, the Quinsey Wolfe's Glass Vault duology, the influence of other novels is heavily felt yet this never felt like anything less than completely its own story.

Urban fantasy and romance are not two elements I ever look for in my literature, and yet this book, that contained both of them, managed to win me over immediately. The whimsical combined with reality and a plethora of lovable characters litter the text, leaving this to be a one-sitting read I tore through in one angst and drama-filled morning.

My Rating: 4.5 Stars!

Envy can turn us all into monsters if we never learn to accept the good in our own lives. Things just came easier for Brenik’s twin sister, Bray and as much as he loved her and needed her, it was envy that nearly destroyed them both. Being fairy-like creatures in the human world only made things worse and Brenik’s envy and discontent with his lot in life causes him to make a foolish and deadly bargain with the Stone of Desire.

CLOUDED BY ENVY by Candace Robinson is filled with the love two siblings have that is tarnished by the jealousy one twin has for his sister. While sometimes reading like a young adult tale, it becomes apparent that it is the essence of the youthful characters that give it that feel as darkness fills Brenik and creates a deadly situation he cannot control. When his “bargain” turns into a nightmare, Bray may be the only person able to help him, but can he accept help from the one person he envies the most or is it too late to atone for his sins?

A wonderful fantasy that comes alive with as much sunshine as darkness with characters covered in layer upon layer of facets and flaws with a fresh twist on family and fairytale creatures.

When the author offered me a review copy of her new release, I expected a fairly standard YA fae story, but what I got was an incredibly unique new adult urban fantasy read! There are a lot of moving pieces to this plot, but they all work well together, whether we're exploring life with a couple of human brothers with Bray (who I loved — she's just a fun, likable little thing), or watching Brenik struggle through a lot of very traumatic, odd changes in his life.

The story changes perspectives between the siblings, and while I had a lot of fun with Bray's chapters, Brenik's were more conflicting. The plot was more intriguing to me on his side of the story, but his character and I didn't mesh well, so I found myself growing frustrated with his poor decisions (which was probably intentional on the author's part!).

Finally, my favorite thing about this book was honestly its mid-90s setting and the media references and jokes. I grew up a 90s kid, and I laughed out loud at how sudden and fitting some of the references were (like the secondhand embarrassment thrown in by Wes' outcry of "Ru-fi-ooooo!" in the dollar store — I'm smiling just typing that). I don't think I'd ever seen so many 90s nods in a new adult read and now, it makes me realize how much I wish more authors would use them!

Thank you so much to Candace for offering me the chance to read an advance copy of this fun little urban fantasy story in exchange for an honest review!

Whoa! I stinking loved this!

Oh, what gorgeous book has fallen into my hands, swept me away with its story and left me heartbroken to bits in the best of ways? This one has!

Where to begin?

Let’s start with the gorgeous cover. Simply beautiful. The art of the branches continues for every new chapter beginning through the entirety of the book, and I always enjoy that extra touch.

Before I was able to start this novel, I already peeked inside to check out the first few paragraphs and I was hooked. A story of young bat siblings stranded during a deadly war against their kind in a different world? Well…I was in and all over that different concept, intrigued about what was to take place.

Bray and Brenik, twins and bat creatures left by their mother after birth, have been raised by two special friends in succession. First, in the world of Laith where they were born and later on in our world. Though they are twins, one was the stronger - Bray, and Brenik - the weaker and smaller one of the two.

Through a mysterious stone gate, their first caretaker, Junah sent them to find refuge in the human world. There, Bray was afforded a wish by the Stone of Desire, while Brenik was left without a wish in his sister's shadows, as always.

Ten years pass by, and the two of them live in the tree by an elderly lady’s property who takes them in and teaches them about their new world. By the time she passes away, Bray has mastered the wish of turning into the form of a human girl and back at her command but didn’t make much use of it since her brother would not be able to participate.

Throughout the years, Bray has always looked out for her brother, but he is loathing himself for being different, weaker, and what he perceives as useless. Often he disappears to the Stone of Desire, to ask for amends that could change his life. And while Bray is waiting on him for days on end, she befriends the two brothers, Wes and Luka, who have moved into the house of their former caretaker.

The three of them get on very well while Brenik is staying away for longer than usual. When mysterious murders happen in town, Bray is beginning to wonder if anything has happened to her brother or if there possibly is a connection to the murder cases.

In the meantime, Brenik has finally struck a deal with the Stone of Desire. Was it everything he wanted it to be?

A deadly contract as readers find out at the end, but who will pay the price for it? Can love prevail through the cloud of envy or are the forces of the dark too strong and unforgiving? A conclusion that will leave you crushed to bits over the torment of human desires gone wrong with a glimmering brush of hope to save all the bat creatures and the future of Laith.

***

This book was precious as well as entertaining with an unforeseeable outcome. I enjoyed all the movie references made that I lived through back in the day as a blossoming teen, and it all fit like a glove for me.

I enjoyed Bray’s character immensely. She is sweet and kind, adapts easily and learns fast. Though she has had many chances to leave Brenik behind, she never does. Her heart shines in the interactions with Wes and Luka. Though there is a hint of romance in the air between her and Wes, the entirety of their connection is based on real friendship and they do nice things all day long.

Brenik’s struggle is the counterbalance in the novel. His torment is dark but relatable. All the emotions that Bray can constrain, he is discovering in full force and uncontrollably. Let’s call it perhaps hyper-emotional. Lust, envy, and anger are the greatest struggles he acts upon. Though he is adaptive as well, his motives deceive him into further troubles deeper and deeper. He turns out to be quite a bad boy…naughty and nice (-ish?).

The Yin and Yang balancing act in the novel is characterized perfectly with the siblings but eventually, a coin will fall and one will rule over the other. Admittedly, I enjoyed reading both sides. In alternate pov, it kept the story propelling forward unraveling everything in its path.

You’ll just have to read it yourself. I loved it. I think the author gets me…or perhaps it is the other way? Not sure…

Give it a try and enjoy,

Cheers!

Clouded by Envy is a little bit of Holly Black meets Peter Pan and The Picture of Dorian Gray.

The central characters are twins, Bray and Brenik, who are small fairylike creatures called bats. They are forced to escape their world called Laith to flee persecution and end up in Texas. The narrative switches back and forth between the twins' points of view.

While the twins look alike, Bray is kind-hearted and good-natured, while Brenik has a darker streak, and is  envious of Bray as she seems to have an easier time in life. He is bitter and envious, which turns him into a sort of monster.

This book was thoroughly entertaining, and the emotions are written in quite a believable manner for the most part. However, the romance aspect was rather cheesy and predictable.

The end was rather unexpected to me!  I will definitely read the next book in the series to see where this goes...

Clouded by Envy was a NA fantasy paranormal romance; a bittersweet story of siblings, envy, deepest desire turning out to be disaster, selfishness, dark vs light within self, choices and its consequences.

characters-
Brayora (Bray) and Brenik were twin sister and brother. They looked like small fairies, bats with human face. Bray was pure-hearted, amiable, smart and was quite mature. She formed relations with humans on earth easily. She was developed character and I loved the way she cared for Brenik but I did not appreciate she staying back in life because of Brenik’s selfish nature. I fell in love with her pure heart and jolly nature.

Brenik was envious, self-centered and blamed Bray for being weak at core of his nature. He loved her and hated her at the same time. There was lot of things bad about him but he also cared for Bray which he realized too late in the book. His negative role as a brother and the way he tried to repay the wrong he did at the end was exceptional.

Wes was amazing brother and Luca was most adorable kid. I loved everything about these two. They gave the book new turn and life.

what i liked-
This was the best book I read by Candace Robinson. I liked it even more than Quinsey Wolfe’s Glass Vault . Writing was mesmerizing, characters were creative and the world was unique.

The book was third person narrative written in two timeline- 10 years before 1995 set in a fictional world, Laith and the present time (1995) on earth- from Bray and Brenik’s POV, alternatively. It began a decade before 1995 which told the story of Brenik’s feeling towards Bray and how the seed of jealousy was sprouted in Brenik’s heart, how they escaped Laith and arrived on earth. Most of the book was in present time Bray and Brenik’s life on earth, how they survived on earth being the creatures from the other world and how it changed their life.

First few chapters outlined Bray and Brenik’s nature and more colors were filled to their character as the story progressed. I loved reading Brenik’s POV because of his two sides good and bad always at war with each other. I hated him for being selfish while on the other hand I liked that his conscience was not totally destroyed. Bray’s growing friendship with Wes and Luca was charming.

I was curious to know where Brenik flew to, why he left Bray and when he will return, whether he will find a way to lessen his venomous feeling for his sister or do something unspeakable. Book held my attention even more when Brenik stuck a bargain with the stone of desire and series of tragic events take place that lead to disaster.

Emotions in the book felt true. Family dynamic was realistic. It was fascinating to read complicated relationships. Vampire, Picture of Dorian Gray and Captain Hook made it even more unique. Concoction of fairy tale and classic created an intoxicating cocktail.

Climax was gripping, the end was heartbreaking, and Epilogue was wonderful.

Overall, it was fast paced, imaginative, fabulous NA fantasy that I highly recommend.

Clouded by Envy was not only filled with complex characters, but it was unlike anything else I have ever read. It was such a unique book! Especially since it was set in the 90s, I was obsessed with all of the mentions from the past. So if you adore fantasy books and want to read something that is unlike anything you've ever read before, definitely add this one to your list!
Each day she had carved a new word into the wood: selfish, lost, hate, missed, broken, insanity, misunderstood, heart, longing, and Hook .

We followed siblings, Brenik and Bray, who were fairy like creatures that called themselves bats. They came to Earth, after escaping from their world Laith, since their kind was being hunted down and slaughtered. While they lived in a tree, a second round of neighbors now occupied the house next door. Their new neighbors were Wes and Luca and I couldn't wait for all of them to meet! But Brenik and Bray's past set them up on two entirely different journeys. One was filled with light and the other was filled with darkness.
Bray rolled to her back, still smiling, as she stared up at the ceiling. Her chest was still filled with happiness—more than in The Goonies when those kids found the ship of treasure.

Bray was such a joy to be around. Her happiness was absolutely infectious and her interactions with Wes and Luca made me laugh and smile. The more we learned about Wes and Luca, oh my heart. I liked them right from the start. And I kept my fingers crossed that something would happen between Bray and Wes. It was all so innocent but at the same time magical. Their moments together were tender and it felt like they were made for each other. Wes could be so serious and Bray was a bundle of fun, they complimented each other perfectly. Well, except for the fact that he was a human and she was a fairy.
His head was a place he could not escape—an internal battle with no end. It wasn’t her— it was never her— it was always him. Brenik got that, but it didn’t stop it. Nothing did.

We alternated chapters between Bray and Brenik, and Brenik's chapters had such a different feel to them. Not only was he jealous of his sister, but he was completely self-centered and didn't always think about the consequences for his actions. He just wanted instant gratification. Some of his moments could be so erotic and then it would take a turn down a dark and twisted path and I was left with my mouth hanging wide open. I didn't like Benik at all, but ironically his chapters were consuming. His thoughts and the dark road he traveled down was impossible to turn away from.
Reaching forward, Wes placed his palm to her chest. “This is what makes you beautiful, Bray… Your heart.” He leaned forward and kissed the delicate area and caressed his way up, until he met her mouth.

On top of watching what happened to Bray and Brenik, there were also mysteries to figure out. I had some guesses, and while I didn't figure out Bray's, I figured out what would happen with Brenik. Since Brenik went down that darker path, I have to give a trigger warning for -
a child's death
. Usually that sends me over the edge and makes me livid. But it didn't and when you read this story you'll see why. So when I reached the end of the book, I was shocked what a trip the epilogue was! The ending left us at the perfect stopping point but at the same time we were set-up perfectly for a spin-off book. I for one am super excited and can't wait to read it!

Clouded By Envy is ONE OF MY FAVORITE BOOKS!!! This is truly the most unique fantasy story, and it is full of heart.

Brenik and Bray...twin brother and sister, they have a rough start in life from the moment they are born.
They flee from Laith to Earth. Brenik goes his way...which is not the easy way. Let’s say he does not choose wisely. Sometimes I was so frustrated with Brenik, but overall my heart went out to him. Bray, the protective and caring sister. How could you not love Bray? She has the most beautiful heart. She shares it with Wes and his little brother, Luca.

The characters are so real, so believable. You see the growth in the two main characters, both in different ways. The dialogue is so beautifully written that you become engrossed in these characters. All of them. The plot moves along so that you want to keep reading, you need to find out what happens next. A cool part too is the 90s references! And of course the Dorian Gray comparison!

Don’t miss out on this one!! It is a one of a kind, absolutely enchanting Fantasy that you are going to want to be sure to read!!! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!!! It deserves ALL THE STARS IN THE SKIES FROM EARTH TO LAITH!!!

”But the cravings will darken your soul--your heart--more than the envy already has. It will all be insatiable--do you accept this?”

BLURB: A green feeling. A bargain. A massive price to pay. Dracula meets The Picture of Dorian Grey in this creative and insatiable tale of two otherworldly creatures that find themselves in a world of humans and pavement.

I’ll say this right away, I don’t typically read New Adult books. I’ve read a few, here and there, but tend to not care so much for their content because they focus a lot on relational...aspects...between characters. Clouded By Envy also includes this aspect. However, I prepared myself going into this read that it would be there. While reading, I simply passed over those parts. They just aren’t my thing. I was elated that this aspect ended up being far from the main focus! Clouded By Envy took me totally by surprise. This book was so inventive. I’ve read several books by this author now, and I must say, I’m amazed each time at how versatile her writing is! Not only does she create new fantasy beings and creatures, she paints a new world, AND brings forth characters with so much of depth!

The story focuses around two peculiar characters. Siblings, Bray and Brenik are creatures known as bats. But they are not like the bats that come to mind--they are fae. Originating from a world known as Laith, the siblings narrowly escape a harrowing existence in their world, and are transported by the Stone of Desire to Earth. The stone grants their wish to pass, along with Bray to have the ability to shift into human form, unlike her brother, who is stuck in his bat-form. After living in secrecy for years, Brenik becomes tired of being “second” to his sister. A deep jealousy that has existed since their youth drives Brenik to seek the Stone of Desire again, so that he may for the ability to also change into a human.
”Brenik, there is a darkness and jealousy in you which has to stop now. I know you love your sister, but the envy needs to cease, or it will destroy everything that is a part of you.”

When Brenik persuades the stone to grant his wish, the stone does, but it calls for a sacrifice. Brenik will forevermore lust after human blood in order to remain in his eternally youthful human form. And lust, he does.

The overall theme of envy and jealousy makes this book such a powerful read! Jealousy snowballs into envy which snowballs into lust which only ends up badly. It shows how envy and coveting only lead to destruction of oneself and to those around. I could babble about this book all day and still have things to talk about! If you look for books with loads of meaning, here’s one for you!

Vulgarity: Some.
Sexual content: Quite a bit, including explicit scenes. (This is the only reason why this book wasn't a full five stars for me.)
Violence: Moderate.

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of CLOUDED BY ENVY in exchange for an honest review. What a ride! Let’s start the review with Brenik. Man, he’s one of my favorite characters because he has multiple layers–the good, the bad, the ugly, and the very-very bad! After escaping his world, he struggles to discover his own identity and finds it difficult to belong. In his journey and as time ticks by, he turns dark and bitter.

Now, enter Bray. For her, life is sunshine with a cherry on top. But when her brother, Brenik, finds her, her world crumbles down, affecting her beloved human friend Wes. When she finds out Brenik isn’t the brother she knew, she desperately tries to help him fight the demons that are torturing him.

Overall, this is a great novel with a twisty, compelling story, and multi-dimensional characters that feel real.

It’s hard these days to find a fantasy book that’s different OR that has a good mix of explaining a new world yet keeping the characters relatable. Clouded by Envy does that and soooo much more! It's an EPIC adult fantasy that will really keep you reading :)

Brenik and Bray are the epitome of yin and yang. Such opposites, such love and hate, and pull and tug. My heart both bled and got angry at Brenik, and Bray - SUCH a ray of light. I connected on more than just a reader level with these characters and if you have family that’s ever made you doubt the meaning of the word, you will too.

Beautifully written, a plot that makes you keep on reading even when your eyes are ready to quit! An engaging, heart-filled story with an ending that left me staggered. Loved. Loved. Loved it and recommend it!!!

The author Candace offered me a copy of her newest book for review. All opinions are my own. This book had many original ideas but the execution was slightly random to me. For example, the book starts out reading like a children’s or middle grader’s book ( just like Peter Pan and Tinkerbell). Now I love stories for all age ranges- this wasn’t a problem. So I’d settled into the story and was pretty much enjoying it when Brenik started effing and blinding! I’m not a prude- it wasn’t the swearing that was the problem- it was swearing in what I considered a children’s tale. Ditto sexual content (however mild). Then I thought it turned into a kind of romance, then there was the vampire element. The message of overcoming sibling rivalry and unconditional love seems to me to be one belonging in the children’s and middle grade range.

I really loved the characters and hope we get to hear more about Laith. I was a little disappointed this wasn’t a more detailed immersion in that world and hope that will be developed in future books in the series. i wanted to know more about the history of the Stone of Desire. I was very intrigued by this book. It could have been purely urban fantasy, high fantasy, YA with romance and I think any one of those versions would be more cohesive. Personally my money would be on either a ‘Hook’ style story OR a Holly Black style YA.
This book had lots going for it and was surprisingly addictive! Once I started I had to keep going! Many thanks to the author for my copy.

Ah, that's a hard one. First of all, I went into this book completely blindly. I was momentarilly drawn in by the fairy-tale, middle grade vibes... and then things escalated into an adult territory within a scene and remained strictly there.

The story has a lot of potential and I'm sorry to rank it so low but it reads more like a first draft. I was really thrown-off by the super-confusing achronological begining. Also, the ending was properly creepy/weird and I mean it in a negative way. That was disappointing because I was leaning more towards 3 stars but that's not going to happen now.

The worldbuilding is promising but also confusing and quite shallow. I really enjoyed both Brey and Brenik, and the Dorian Gray vibes were really strong which was a positive surprise, I cannot say that I've ever encountered this idea anywhere else.

Overall, I think that promising-and-original-but-reads-more-like-a-first-draft is the best description.

I’ve happily jumped into every Candace Robinson book to date, but I don’t think I was ever as excited for any of the prior books as I was for Clouded by Envy. From the moment I heard about this one, I wanted it. It promised so many of the things I love, it had an intriguing blurb, and I fell in love with the cover. Thus, I was more than willing to dive in.

As there was quite a bit of time between finding out about this one and getting my hands on it, I created quite a few expectations in my mind. In fact, I had countless ideas of the kind of story I would be receiving. Therefore, I went in with all kinds of expectations. All of which turned out to be completely off the mark. Clouded by Envy was nothing at all like I’d imagined it would be, making it a wonderful surprise.

There are so many elements to Clouded by Envy, nods to so many different things. I want to list them all – all the references, all the comparisons you will make, all the odes – and yet to do so would be to ruin the surprise. There is plenty in store throughout this story, and the tiniest of detail could spoil it for you. Just know, this is one of those books that will appeal to numerous people for various reasons. What one person will love will not be the same thing that causes another person to love the book, and I love a book that can appeal to so many different people on so many levels. It really makes for a special read, something that will hook many and create so many views about the story.

Without a doubt, it was a unique quick read. Once I was sucked in I found myself unable to put the book down, happily completing it in a single sitting. I confess there was a bit of uncertainty at first – I felt as though I didn’t quite understand things as well as I could have – but once I was part way through, I was obsessed in numerous ways. Not to mention, the way certain things played out really surprised me, ensuring I was speeding through the story.

I’m also super eager for the companion novel. There are two things I want to see, and I feel as though the companion novel is liable to go with the latter (especially with how it’s labelled a spin-off). The first, and what I consider to be the less likely, is a prequel story. I want to better understand the fantasy world, I want to understand the fantasy creatures and the history better. The second, and what I believe to be more likely, is a continuation. I want to know what happened next, I want to see how a certain story played out. No matter which it is – or if it is something completely different – I will happily give it a read.

Brenik and Bray are twins from a world not quite like ours. They're not human either, related closely to bats. They are forced to leave their home and when Bray gets a gift from the Stone of Desire, it only makes Brenik even more jealous of his older twin sister. Deciding he can't take it anymore, he strikes a deal with the stone but it's not quite what he hoped it to be, he ends up murdering people. Can Bray save him or is he beyond the point of no return?

VAMPIRES!!!!! I said it, vampires. This book has vampires! Which thrilled my little vampire obsessed heart so much. That alone was enough to make me love this, well not really but it gets serious bonus points! The writing is great, fast-paced, not a single dull moment, every scene drives the plot forward quickly. It just hooks you so you don't want to put down the book. You have to keep going to the very end.

I don't think I've ever voiced this before but I'm not the biggest fan of reading about children because most of the time they fall flat to me... I don't know really how to describe it. BUT I loved Luca! He was so adorable. Honestly, all the characters were very well written, even the few that we only see for a few scenes. My favorite was Luca though, not gonna lie. There's even romance in this book and it's explicit, I mean the book is NA so...

Side note: I had no idea this was set in the '90s! It was so nice to step back into a time before cell phones controlled the masses and social media became the God everyone worshiped. I want to see more books set in this time frame.

My only complaint, I wanted more. This was on the shorter side and I found myself sitting it down because I didn't want it to end. Though that ending! I mean, can I get the sequel now... please? Bottom line, a great fast-paced novel that will suck you in and leave you wanting more.

Clouded by Envy by Candace Robinson
Published by The Parliament House

Meet Brenik and Bray. These two siblings are refuges from an alternate world where their species, the Bats, have been eradicated. Now these two tiny creatures must find away to live on Earth. Everything comes easy to Bray, where Brenik needs to struggle. This resentment begins to take its toll on the family dynamics and leads to a horrible, warped wish that leads to horror. As the story develops, Bray and her human friends must find and help Brenik fight the evil within to save him from himself.

This is a story of family, hope, loss and sacrifice. The author spins a great tale full of wonder and suspense and is not afraid of playing hardball. I really enjoyed the story and will definitely be on the watch for more from this author.

On top of the story, check out the amazing cover art for this novel. The cover invokes the wonder and awe that Ms. Robinson brings to her story.

I found Clouded By Envy refreshing, unlike anything I've read before. I thought Bray was so sweet and cute! I also really liked Luca and Wes. There were moments where I almost felt sorry for Brenik, and I was always curious to see what he would do next. A fast fun addictive read. I'm so glad I bought the paperback version so I can admire it on my bookshelf.

It wouldn't hurt my feelings any if Candace Robinson wanted to continue the story. :)

Candace Robinson has done it again! She's created a story that uses fact and fiction to weave a spell over the reader and leave them wanting more. When it comes to a book by this very talented author, I know I'm going to take a journey with memorable characters who will surprise me along the way. She combines horror with the paranormal and uses books or films we know so well to give her readers stories that shine and remain with them for days after. There's just something about this author's work that stands out and has me excited for the next book despite this genre being one I don't read much of. Candace Robinson’s books definitely aren't to be missed, and the words best to describe them are - twisted magic!

‘She felt lit up, brighter than the moon and all the stars combined.’ - Bray

This 5 star story introduces us to Brayora and Brenik who, despite being twins, appear to be very different. Brayora is lightness, and Brenik is darkness. Brenik has always felt like he lives in his sister's shadow, and over time the envy and hatred he feels grows and leads to him making a deal that even the devil would be proud of. It's not until he loses something that matters to him that he realises how low he has sunk and he makes the ultimate sacrifice, which I feel redeems him. Whilst Brenik's life takes a dark turn, Bray's appears to take a different direction and she finally finds what she's always denied herself. However, this leads to a surprising twist in the story that had me gasping and re-reading to ensure it had actually happened. This is something I've come to expect from this author, and it's something she does so well. Even though there's an epilogue for Clouded By Envy, I can't help but suspect the story isn't yet over for Bray, Wes and especially Luca.

*I was sent an e-arc of this book by Parliament House Press in exchange for my honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own*

Honestly, looking at all of the reviews this book has received so far, it appears I'm the only one to not have enjoyed this book.

Part of me wonders if it's because I don't like dark fantasy, but the other part of me is screaming that even the writing wasn't fantastic. It was simplistic and clipped and lacked the finely crafted prose I would expect from a young adult fantasy novel. To be honest, it sounded like poorly written high school fanfiction. I hate saying that, because the author has certainly done more with writing than I could ever do. She is talented, I just think she has a long way to go and a lot of hard work to sharpen her skills.
The plot was certainly unique and I appreciated the originality of the story. Maybe it was a little too far out there for me as well. It went from being an interesting story about beings from another world, to a vampire novel with hints of Dorian Grey, to explicit romance scenes, to murder, and the freaking WEIRDEST 'saving of a main character' (ie Luca, for those who have read it) I have EVER read.
It was at times extremely crude and boorish. I thought the sex scenes were unnecessary and sloppily handled.

The ending made utterly no sense at all and was one of the most strange conclusions to a book I've ever read. Not much lead up, just... "here's how we solved this problem and now there's a happy-not-so-happy ending." It wasn't unique, just weird and frankly, disturbing.

I couldn't wait to finish this book and put it all behind me but I will say one thing for sure, it's not a story I will likely forget any time soon. So kudos to that I guess.

What made me pick this book up, was the beautiful cover. I was not disappointed by this story.
This book is a breath of fresh air. I loved what the author wrote down. It's so different than what I usually read. This story is told from two perspectives. Brenik and Bray. I loved reading from Brenik's POV. The author descibed the desire Brenik had to be better than his sister in way that made me sympathise with him. I loved the development of the chacater's.

I loved this book. I've read this book for a review, but I do only short reviews, so I hope this is good enough. It was a strange story, did not see this coming. And that's a good thing. If you love Fairytales but a little strange, than you should read this, it's just wonderful. Thanks for the read.

"Brenick's not a vampire - he can go out in the sun. He isn't immortal if he doesn't drink the blood." Bray grimaced.
"This is just like the whole bat argument. I let that one go, but I'm right this time. He's some type of damn vampire. I don't care what you say."

Review:
Well, Clouded By Envy was certainly unique. And probably the weirdest things I read all year so far. I'm not exactly certain what I expected out of this when I started it, but it certainly wasn't what I got. Yet I really enjoyed reading it because it was just so bizzare. Also it had some really cool concepts I'm not certain I have seen before. Some I definitely haven't.

The uniqueness was really the best part of this book. It just had some amazing concepts. The main characters are twin bats from another realm, Laith, and they've come to Earth because their kind is being hunted to extinction. They're afraid and they don't really know how to function in this new, weird world. Bray and Brenik and they have two wildly different personalities and he book alternates the perspective between the two siblings.

The main conflict in the book is their two different personalities, even. Bray was born with everything, pretty much perfect. Yet she is still kind-hearted. She makes certain that Brenick, who was born with every disadvantage, feels accepted and like he is just as normal as she is. Brenick, on the other hand, is a jealous creature and blames every disadvantage he has on everything and everyone else. He is consumed by it his envy.

And did I mention they were bats? Because Brenick, consumed by jealousy, goes to make a wish that he would be human. The Stone of Desire grants his request, only it will come with a terrible curse. He'll have to drink human blood. MAKING HIM A VAMPIRE BAT! I laughed so much. So, so much. If Brenick doesn't drink human blood, he'll die. It also brought in a lot of the "old" vampire myths which I really liked.

While Brenick is off doing his vampire routine, Bray is making friends with a human family. Which was slightly weirding me out a little bit because it felt the entire time that the author was trying to set up a Bat x Human romance. Yet it was also cute to watch Bray learn to be happy without her brother to always take care of, and to watch her become her own person.

I certainly had a fun time reading this. Partly because it was so bizarre. The writing wasn't the best ever, but it was completely readable. There were some holes in the story and a lot of things that just didn't seem to make sense, since things just didn't always feel like they were explained cleanly and clearly. Yet despite this I just had a blast while reading.

I received this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to Candace Robinson, The Parliament House, and Netgalley for providing the opportunity to review this copy!

“The envy needs to cease, or it will destroy everything that is a part of you.”

This was my first Candace Robinson's book and I'm sorry to say that I didn't love it as much as I hoped. I really liked the characters and the unique concept of the book but everything seemed rushed especially the second half. I wish it was a bit longer and there's more detail about the magic and the world. Sometimes it was a bit confusing for me.

This book was about Brenik and Bray, two siblings/bats from a mystical land called Laith. They both jump into the human world to escape from the hunters who already killed their entire family. Brenik was always been envious of his Older sister Bray and in the human world he becomes jealous of her sister's ability to turn into a human. So he attempts to strike a deal with the Stone of Desire to become human without caring about the consequences. Soon he becomes a creature that needs blood to survive. When he starts to lose himself, he begs his sister for help. Bray loves her little brother and she will do anything to help him break the curse, but it'll destroy her relationship with the people she has come to love.

I honestly liked the characters, but I couldn't emotionally connect with any one of them. Bray was a protective sister who loves her brother deeply even though he was such a jerk to her sometimes. Her selfless and sweet nature was very admirable. Brenik is a pretty complex guy who has a darkness inside him. Although I didn't like him, I felt sympathy for him. Wes is a good hearted guy who likes Bray. His little brother Luca is his only world. I loved Luca! He was simply adorable. I really liked his friendship with Bray. I think it's one of the aspect that I enjoyed the most in this book. The romance between Wes and Bray was okay-ish. It nearly seemed like a insta-love because they do develop feelings pretty quickly. I was slightly disappointed that this book focused very less on the romance because I wanted more Wes and Bray.

The plot was okay but the execution could've been better. So many things felt rushed and the ending was sort-of weird. Is this book a prologue to a new series? And I really liked the Dorian Gray twist, it's another thing that I really enjoyed. I couldn't predict the major twists in the book which was a good thing. The writing was not bad. The book was written in Brenik and Bray's POV's (third person). The setting was okay-ish but coming to the myths and magic, I was really confused. We don't get much info about their origins.

Overall, it was a decent urban fantasy read! Although it's not my favorite, I think many people would love it. So if you want to read it, then definitely give it a shot.

Such a wonderous peek into the lives of magical creatures living amongst us!

At first, I was a little skeptical. I’m not partial to hardcore Fantasy and the first few pages describe what can only be a fantastical land, inhabited by surreal characters. That said, I know Candace’s work well, so I expected more to the story, and of course, she didn’t let me down.

Best described as Urban Fantasy, Bray and Brenik end up in our world and their journey into adulthood is not an easy one. Without divulging too much, they experience a lot of heartache and turmoil, and their relationship in itself is as much tumultuous as it is loving. This results in Brenick doing something rash and dangerous, altering not only his sister’s life, but all the characters’ lives forever.

I enjoyed this book so much. I loved how Candace peppers her story with 80’s and 90’s pop references, adding a touch of nostalgia to my reading experience I definitely wasn’t expecting. Her characters are amazing, and the creatures she imagines would make Burton proud.

This is a 5 star read for sure, and I can’t wait to see what comes next!

Rating… A+

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of CLOUDED BY ENVY in exchange for an honest review. What can I say… IT WAS AN ORIGIN STORY!!!! I don’t care what anyone says, that is exactly what it was. And to avoid spoilers, I can’t tell you what creatures’ origin story. You are going to have to read the book!  Brenik is a very dark character and fit the title of the book, COMPLETELY. I was so rooting for him to get his act together. Especially since…sorry, spoiler. I fell in love with Braya and her self-sacrifice and kind spirit. She really helped shine a light on some of the darkness. And trust me, THERE IS DARKNESS! Her relationship with Luca was so adorable. I really hope Candace decides to continue his story. And Braya and Wes…swoon worthy indeed. My only issue was the length. And yes, I told her this. I wanted to spend more time in this story world especially because of my love of origin stories. You need that room to really explore. Well, I need that room to explore. I am not opposed to a book being 500 pages long! I honestly recommend you pick up this book. You will not be disappointed. 
