Off the coast of North America lies a penal island known as the Island of Killers.
No electricity. No prison guards. No mercy.
And every woman who ends up on this island is a convicted murderer.
When eighteen-year-old Lydia Brone is sentenced to serve time on this island for accidentally killing her mom’s abusive boyfriend, it feels like a death sentence.
If Lydia hopes to ever return home, she’ll have to forget who she is and become someone else… someone capable of choosing survival over humanity.
The Feral Sentence Serie is truly a MUST-READ for anyone who loves really fantastic dystopian adventures. But this isn’t a light and fluffy read- be warned! This is gritty, raw, violent, emotive, and a ‘hang on to your seat’ and brace yourselves because this is going to get INTENSE. There are potential triggers contain throughout the series such as violence, murder, abuse/domestic abuse, manipulation, and more. So keep that in mind if you are sensitive to any of these subjects. I stumbled on this series purely by accident, and I am soooo glad that I did because I was so hooked on the story within the first few pages that I practically inhaled the entire series in only a couple of sittings. It is entirely addictive- the characters, the ‘world’, the story makes for completely riveting reading. Shade Owens world building skills are sheer perfection. I was transported into the story, struggling to survive right alongside Lydia and the rest of the cast. Ms. Owens writing is immersive, captivating, vividly exciting, and entirely addictive. I am hooked and will happily devour anything she ever produces, because WOW. This is a heart-stopping, action-packed, intense, dystopian thriller- with adventure, danger, violence, a fight for survival, friendship, battles, dramatic developments, savagery, fantasy, a remote island prison, jungle, no escape, politics, corruption, brutality, futuristic sci-fi, factions, war, games of cat and mouse/mind games, challenges, risk, betrayal, and SO, SO, SO MUCH MORE. The Feral Sentence introduces (and follows) eighteen-year-old Lydia Brone who has been sentenced to Kormace Island- a penal colony for the worst of the worst inmates and is known as the Island of Killers. She is transported to the island after killing her mother’s violent boyfriend accidently while trying protect her mother- but the helicopter doesn’t ever ‘land’ on the island, instead Lydia is thrown from the airborne helicopter into the ocean, where she has to swim to the ‘safety’ of land. But this is only the start of her survival adventure, as just because she finally reaches land, doesn’t mean she’s ever really ‘safe’- at all. And so, the intensity and adventure begins. Lydia, and the rest of the cast of characters are so well-developed with their own unique individual personalities, quirks, and flaws. Shade Owens has a bold, dynamic, and very vivid writing style that easily brings her story to life- it was like watching a movie play out before my eyes, The descriptions are quite detailed and vivid- painting a powerful picture of Lydia, the island environment, and the quest for daily survival. Right down to the living conditions, camp, ‘native’ clothing, tools, food, jungle, animals, hunting, scouting, battle scenes, intensity, suspense, the ’feral’ vibes, and every other engrossing detail. Just brilliant! The series contains: -The Feral Sentence: A Dystopian Survival Thriller (The Feral Sentence Book #1) -Beasts of Prey: A Dystopian Survival Thriller (The Feral Sentence #2) -Primal Instincts: A Dystopian Survival Thriller (The Feral Sentence Book #3) -Reign of Blood (The Feral Sentence #4) -Game of Death (The Feral Sentence #5)
This would definitely make a fantastic movie or television series! Highly Recommended Reading!!! Happy Reading…
This novel is absolutely brillant. The title of the series was quite captivating and caught my attention right off. The Feral Sentence is a collection of four novellas that are excellent read for fans of young adult thrillers. While advertised for the Young Adult category I would suggest it is appropriate for all ages. The stories feature an exciting setting with characters that are memorable. It's a futuristic work that deals with resilience, creativity, and the will to survive against all odds in a very harsh and unforgiving environment filled with prisoners. As you read it will be up to you to put the pieces together! This is a unbelievable read! It pulled me in from beginning and held me to the end. Occasionally I would have to tell myself to breathe! The world building is detailed and imaginative. This novel has strong, well-developed characters and an ingenious story line that keeps you turning the pages. I recommend this novel and would read more novels by this author
This story is non-stop action. The female characters are believable and bad-a$$! A corrupt government & court system convict people unjustly for crimes committed in self defense or defense of others, although some convicted are truly violent. The US Government stops funding prisons & instead drops convicted “murders” in the ocean just off a remote island where the women who make it to shore are left with nothing but the clothes they are wearing to live or die. Great read!
Could not put this book down! This was my first read by this author, Shade Owen's has a great writing style. The first book is good the5th book is outstanding. The entire story should be unbelievable but she has created a story with strong women character's that have been sentenced to an Island prison. I can only say read the series. It takes you on an emotional roller coaster... equally
So many memorable characters in this series. So much friendship, so much death. You can picture this happening, like a movie playing in your mind, as you’re reading. The last battle scene is mind boggling! I’m sorry to reach the end of this one... I highly recommend this series.
Such an intriguing book. Could not put it down. However would have been much better if it had stopped at the fourth book. The last book just annoyed me. Why try making things over dramatic when it could focus on Ihe corrupt government. Taking a different turn was totally unnecessary.
If you love action, thrillers and lots of questions to answer you have to read this series. There is blood, sweat and tears, literally in these books. What will be the end? Read this series by Shade Owens and you will love it. I am finished and actually have already started another series by this Author. A new favorite Author for me to enjoy.
This was probably twice as long as it should have been, it's very repetitive. There's so much time spent in Brone's head rehashing the same thing over and over, I wound up skimming a lot. The descriptions of the non-white women seemed quite racist. There's a lot of violence and gore, which bothered me less than all the mentions of the lack of hygiene.
It's not beyond believability that in a future world, the concept in this book may or may not be a reality! Excellent storyline and characters you will either love or hate, support or wish were dead. High praise for the author and his ability in crafting words that produce a series that will leave you breathless.
This series is absolutely the worst set of books I’ve ever read. Poorly written, with minimal proofreading. The author apparently doesn’t know the difference between “stock” and “stalk”, and is absolutely in love with the word “smirk”. This purchase was money I won’t get back; don’t waste yours
Very intense, lots of twist and turns, spellbinding are just a few of the words I would use to describe this series’s. I found it very hard to stop reading every night in order to go to sleep. I kept wishing the this series was a read and listen book so that I did not have to wait too find out what was happening!
Wow, just due. So enjoyed this book and got to the end and was like, that’s it. Where’s the ending? What happened? I need to know more. Was there a follow up written? Don’t end it like that
Hard to put down. Once you pick this book up you can't put it down. The story is simple. A convicted murderer is dropped on a prison island without guards to serve her sentence. Let the adventure begin.
What a great read! Gripping from the first page & rocketing to the finish. Great story and character development. Characters I felt I could relate to. I didn’t want to put it down.
This was a fun, easy, but unexpectedly engaging series! I really enjoyed the plot twists, relationships between the women on the island, and the protagonist's growth. If you like fast-paced, empoweing, feminist, dystopian fiction, you'll love this series!
Omg, I couldn't stop reading long enough to write a review, but now, what can I say? This series kept me up at night, couldn't stop until I was finished.
This series was so different ftom my usual fare that I could hardly put it down. Very dark and gritty but with humor as well. I will definitely read more by this author.
