Inspired by the true story of the world-famous six-toed felines of the Ernest Hemingway House in Key West, Florida--and the fur-raising hurricane that nearly blew them away--Hemingway's Cats is a delightful novel packed with colorful characters, adorable cats, a little romance, and a lot of humor.
Laura Lange didn't come to Key West to fall in love. As a recent college grad--with a useless degree in English--she came to work at the historic Hemingway home as a tour guide. Why not? She wrote her thesis on the iconic author. She has no other job offers. And she's desperate. Now Laura is falling desperately in love--with the fifty-four frisky felines who freely roam the estate. These descendants of Hemingway's original cat have not only stolen her heart--they're changing her life in ways she never imagined . . .
First there's Nessie, the bushy-tailed house mother of the cats who seems to have adopted Laura, too. Then there's grumpy old Pawpa Hemingway; the cat thieves Chew-Chew and Whiskey; the big-pawed Boxer and Bullfighter; and dozens of darling kittens. The locals are lovable, too. Laura's having a great time with her boy-crazy bungalow roomies, the Crabb sisters, and especially the young, handsome cat keeper, Jake. But Laura's summer of fun is about to take an unexpected turn--a Category 5 hurricane is about to make landfall directly on their doorstep . . . They can't possibly evacuate fifty-four cats. So Laura, Nessie, and all of their friends decide to hunker down in the Hemingway House to weather this storm--together.
Can you please do me a favor? Please don’t tell my corgis that I use to be a cat person. Yes, I know. It would break their hearts.
When I first moved out on my own as a young person, my first fur child was Patches. She owned me, and lived with me through the birth of my two sons all the way to my move from Southern California to the central coast – beautiful Cayucos, California. Before I bought my house here in Morro Bay.
We added quite a few cats to our family over time. They were quite irresistible. Demanding. Independent. Purr-fect. And, well, easy to love. It wasn’t until I retired from my teaching career that dogs entered our family. And, over time, as in every family, the cats passed. Still, please don’t tell my pups, okay?
So, every now and then, I love a good cat story. And, when I was with my grandkids, who happen to have cats, because obviously my sons grew up loving cats, it was only obvious that this book should happen.
As we were dropping off some of my books at other Little Free Libraries in the neighborhood, they saw this one in one of the neighbors Little Free Library and said, “Oma, this one looks perfect to read!” So, how could I not resist all those cute faces on the cover?
Have you ever seen a six-toed cat? How about a few of them? Or 54 to be exact!
In this story, they happen to inhabit the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum in Key West Florida. And they don’t mind befriending Laura Lange who has recently taken the job as a tour guide at the museum hoping to also work on her college thesis on Hemingway. Of course, it doesn’t hurt to enjoy a love life, too. For Laura that is!
But Laura isn’t really the star of this show. The cats take center stage. And one of them is Nessie. And, the author gives readers insights into their “thoughts” along the way. Including their habits and personalities.
It was a fun, light read with endearing characters, and some humor. And being Florida, some inclement weather to overcome.
Cat lovers will especially rejoice in immersing themselves in this joyful, romantic, entertaining, purr-fectly imperfect tail! (Yes, I spelled it wrong on purpose!)
Fiction inspired by the true story of the famous six-toed felines at Ernest Hemingway House. A cast of quirky characters including the cats and kittens. A charming breezy read.
A charming tale based on the true story of how 54 Hemingway cats survived Hurricane Irma in Key West. I remember being gripped by the story of these 6-toed creatures who rode out the storm with Hemingway House employees in 2017. As a cat-person, I knew this was a must-read and it truly was! Great fun for lovers of felines, Papa, and the entrancing Keys.

Thanks to the author, Kensington Books, and NetGalley for the ARC. Opinions are mine.
Inspired by the true story of the famous six toed cats that lived with the author Ernest Hemingway. Laura Lange came to Key West, Florida after graduating form college with a degree in English. Her job was to help with the tours of the famous Hemingway house and the many descendants of the original Snow White cat with the six toes. The cats became famous when a pending storm (Irma) threatened their lives. They rode out the storm and Laura became inspired with her writing.
What a fun novel this is! A recent college graduate moves from Syracuse, New York to Key West, Florida. She is going to work at the historic Hemingway House, and anything is possible! While this is a fictional tale, solely from the author’s imagination, it sounds so realistic! The characters, including those who work there and at neighboring businesses, are a delightfully eclectic group. Based on what the author writes about the setting, I would enjoy visiting there. I would definitely want to meet the special cats!
Laura is a young woman who has been fascinated by the Hemingway House since visiting there with her family several years earlier. Starting as a tour guide there is a dream come true, and she has prepared well for her job. Laura found interesting roommates who have an assortment of exotic pets, none of which can top the cat she met at Hemingway House when visiting years ago. Back then, she and the gorgeous green-eyed golden Nessie and she had a unique connection. Both she and Nessie are thrilled to see each other again.
The ups and downs of learning a new job, meeting the charming Key West folks, and spending time with the six-toed cats brings Laura no end of adventures. When a hurricane heads toward the island, all are to be evacuated. How does one leave behind the treasures of Hemingway House – the 54 cats currently in residence? Some of the staff simply could not do so. They did the best they could to prepare, but there is only so much humans can do when both Tropical Storm Sally and Hurricane Harry are determined to converge on Key West.
I enjoyed the humor, including the attack of the chex-mix-eating chickens and finding a pet boa constrictor in one’s room. There is also the excitement of being in the place of one’s dreams, apprehension of not knowing anyone, even roommates, before arriving, and the exhilaration of seeing the beauty of the area. I appreciated seeing the point of view of Nessie, the cat who favors Laura over all other humans. The fear of not only will the humans, cats, kittens, and house survive the high winds and rain, makes the story all that it can be. I would love to see a follow-up to this novel! I highly recommend this to anyone who has seen the real Hemingway House and cats, appreciates the delightful company of felines, and is up for the adventure of the incredibly ferocious forces of hurricanes and tropical storms and caring about another being so much to be willing to risk one’s life save theirs.
From a thankful heart: I received a copy of this from Amazon and Goodreads First contests; a review was not required.
This book was the perfect beach read, although it does involve a hurricane so maybe not for some people. I visited Hemingway house and Key West not too long ago so I love getting my hands on books that take place there. This was really cute and the cats even get their own chapters. It is the story of a new employee at Hemingway House and all the characters she meets in Key West. A hurricane is coming and obviously you cannot evacuate all the cats at the house, so they have to ride it out. Apparently this really was a news story back in 2017 with Hurricane Irma. This was also a great book to be number 50 for the year.
"In order to write about life, first you must live it." -Ernest Hemingway
And this is why I don’t watch Hallmark movies…. This book has all the cheese, cliches, cornball characters, eye rolly love interests I presume Hallmark movies have, and it ends with romantic pair ups, long lost sister cat pair ups, no character or their possessions adversely affected by the category 5 hurricane that hits, and of course every last bow is tied up in pretty packages.
The book was marketed as humorous and full of cute cat stories, and I had been to Key West on vacation earlier in the year and LOVED the Hemingway House and all its cats. But I found the writing weak and cutesy, not even closely chuckle-worthy. Having been on an HH tour, the author clearly padded up the plot-lacking story with facts and stories presented by the tour guides.
I’m giving this 1.5 stars and generously rounding up, only because of the cats……who in real life are completely awesome. I highly recommend a visit to the Hemingway House. It is much more enjoyable than this book.
Thank you NetGalley, Lindsey Hooper and Kensington Books for the ARC of Hemingway’s Cats. This is my personal review. This is a fabulous fun book to read. The book being based on Hemingway’s six toed cats is perfect. Hemingway’s house is a great place to visit in Key West and having been there I could picture in my mind the location. Laura Lange deciding to move to Key West to be a tour guide at the Hemingway House. She had done her college thesis on Hemingway and this was all the inspiration she needed to make her change in life. This is a book you will enjoy so much. Just seeing the cover is enough to make you want to pick up the book to read. The location- the people and the six toed cats make for a book you will want to share with your friends!
It’s a cute book, and an easy read, but very one-dimensional. I don’t suppose I know what I was expecting but I got bored about halfway through and couldn’t bring myself to waste any more time on it. I recommend this as the kind of book you bring with you and read for ten minutes at a time when you’re enjoying your morning coffee or waiting in your car for the kids to get out of school. It isn’t particularly enrapturing but the author tells a very sweet story.
In all honesty, I only read the first half of this book. So I may have missed the plot twists and other fun things. I really wanted to like this book, but it just didn’t grab me. I have gotten to the age where I just won’t spend the time finishing books that don’t entice me. So I may have missed something great. I felt there was no plot and the characters were very thinly developed. This is a hallmark movie in book form. If you like those movies, you will love it.
This is such a fun and happy book. It made me want to go to Key West, and Hemingway's House, and to see and pet Hemingway's six-toed cats. Loved the characters!
Erm. Well...without a plot or conflict, books can't get very far, can they? This book was literally everything a recent writing workshop told us not to do. I really, really liked the concept of this book, but there is no storyline and very little conflict. Laura herself is the textbook definition of Mary-Sue: the town loves her; she can do no wrong; and has boys fighting over her from the moment they meet. Also she's boring. I know almost nothing about her. I also cringed at how many times a page break started with "five days later..." or "two weeks later..." as its own sentence. The constant use of Spongebob time cards is very third grade.
I did like the setting and learning a bit more about the Hemingway house, but those facts aren't interwoven very well. If often feels like Hooper is speaking directly to the reader from a tour script.
When it takes me five days to read 140 pages, I know it's time to give up. While I know that this kind of book can be cheesy, that doesn't mean it can't be done right.
Laura Lange is excited about her new job. She’s a new tour guide at the famous Hemingway House in Key West, Florida. The historic house is known for the polydactyl (six-toed) cats who make it their home. Laura is immediately enchanted by the cats as well as the humans she meets in Key West.
However, it’s hurricane season and there is a Category 5 hurricane headed right for them. There’s no way to evacuate all those cats, so Laura and her new Key West friends stay together to protect the cats.
What a darling, sweet story. I’ve visited the Hemingway House and fell in love with every cat I saw. Each room had at least one cat making it their own. I’m hoping to some day go back. This story is based on a real-life hurricane event.
I enjoyed this story from start to finish. There’s some romance, a little suspense, and many, many beautiful and loving cats. You know this is a story I savored.
The characters are a motley group who make you smile. They all have their own little quirks. Of course my favorite characters are the cats. They have their own personalities, especially Nessie who is attached to Laura as soon as they meet.
It’s a story that touched my heart and gave me that “feel good” feeling. A wonderful escape from the real world. A true keeper!
FTC Disclosure: I voluntarily reviewed a free Advance Reader Copy of this book from the publisher and NetGalley. I was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own.
This is a delightful read for all of us that love cats and Hemingway. Thank you to the publisher, the author and to Net Galley. This is such a fun read that it is the perfect reading escape . This is pure catnip for cat lovers with wonderful descriptions and musings of all the cats at Hemingway house.
Laura is a tour guide for the Hemingway House. She adores Hemingway and the cats each with their own personality. She loves her job of giving tours and telling visitors about Hemingway and the cats. She has even done her thesis on Hemingway. When Hurricane Irma is approaching Laura and other employees decide to stay in the house with the cats. This is a exciting part of the book and kept me reading into the night. I had no idea the cats were at the house during Irma and was on the edge of my seat.
Nessie and Pawpa are two of the cats featured in the book. The author has a wonderful way of incorporating the cats into her story along with the humans. This is wonderful for those of us that have never been to Hemingway house and always read about the polydactial cats that call the house home and their caretakers. A wonderful read that I highly recommend and will be giving as gifts. Well done to the author.
I loved this story! I remember worrying about the cats every time I heard about a storm heading their way! I had NO idea they weren't removed from harm ( I guess I shouldn't be too shocked, I remember the animal rescues in New Orleans after Katrina? Horrifying. I could not have imagined anyone could leave their pets behind...) I was happy to read that others remained with them during this particular storm. I enjoyed everything about the book actually. But particularly loved the chapter about the town gossip! Very funny! I had to put the book down a couple of times to laugh and wipe away tears! That the group were in the middle of a hurricane and sharing the stories was amazing. I'm not sure I could have kept myself together enough to have even thought of anything except keeping alive. Loved the people in the book, memorable characters to be sure. I have never been to Key West, but it's on my to go to list. As a cat lover, I want to meet the felines!
I received a Kindle ark from Netgalley in exchange for a fair review.
Hemingway's Cats by Lindsey Hooper was a fascinating read! Laura is a tour guide for the Ernest Hemingway House. She adores Hemingway and the university graduate wrote her thesis about him. She also loves cats and her job of leading tours and informing visitors about Hemingway and the cats is perfect for her. She is having a wonderful summer with the cats, her room-mates and gorgeous cat-keeper, Jake until Hurricane Irma decides to make an appearance...
Loosely based on a true story, Hemingway's Cats was a compelling read. The characters were a very likeable bunch of folk and I loved the methods used by Lindsey Hooper of harmoniously blending the people and felines into the tale. With scatterings of humour, the deft writing style of the author impressed me, and I was invested in the story until its conclusion. Overall, a delightful novel that I highly recommend so dive in as soon as you can.
I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my own request from Kensington Books via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.
First of all, this is not my genre at all. If not references to Hemingway, his house and cats on a cover, I wouldn't fall for this book. It looked too much "Hallmark-ish". However, I was pleasantly surprised. There were quite a few things I learned from this book. It's atmosphere suddenly remainded me of "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society" by Mary Ann Schaffer. It's a pleasant relaxing page turning reading which meanwhile is a bit more than just a beach or an airplane novel. It actually inspired me to research more about Hemingway, to Google all the Key West hurricane stories, to think about visiting his house one day, and to maybe adopt a polydactyl cat if I'm lucky enough.
I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a comfort read, especially the cat lovers out there. All the characters (humans and cats alike) were quite charming and I ended up just flying through the pages. After reading this I will have to look up pictures of the real life "Hemingway Cats" and the Hemingway House in Key West. Sounds like a great place for a vacation... when it´s not hurricane season :)
Thanks to NetGalley, the author and publisher for an advanced reading copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Reading this book was a treat. Normally. I'm reading heavier fare, but I happened to get my hands on a copy so I thought I would check it out as a gift for my kitty loving pals. Well, I'll definitely order some copies for friends. I got caught up in the story, and read it straight through. I do have a cat, so I have a soft spot. But I was also impressed with Lindsey Hooper's research on storms and more. It was a very satisfying read in that the author left no loose ends. The characters and situations were fun. And I really want to visit Key West!
This is just a fun little short easy read. I’ve been to Key West and adore cats so it made me smile the whole way through. It’s not very deep, but it’s just a cute little book.
This seemed like such a cute premise. I love Key West and was excited to read a story set there. But, the third person omniscient point-of-view that included the CATS’ thoughts was just too over the top. The story got less and less believable. Also, as a Floridian, the naming of the hurricanes bothered me. Harry would not form after Sally - they are named in alphabetical order.
Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Books for the opportunity to read a digital ARC in return for an honest review.
This is probably the first cat-related book I’ve ever read, and I’d say it was just as cheesy as I’d expected it to be. But it worked with this story. I loved the different personalities of the cats and humans in the story. It was cute how everyone came together in the end.
"A book in which an animal or inanimate object is a point-of-view character", "Read a book featuring a beloved pet where the pet doesn’t die", loose interpretation of "an over 40 romance" and "A romance novel"
Hemingway’s Cats is the first book by Lindsey Hooper that I have read. A thoroughly enjoyable, easy to read story about the myriad of six-toed (polydactyl) cats that inhabit the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum in Key West, Florida.
Laura Lange moves to Key West to take a job as a tour guide at the Hemingway Museum (she did after all write her college thesis on Hemingway) …and thus the story begins. The reader is taken on a journey like no other as Laura adapts to life in Key West, her new job and a blossoming love life (possibly-only time will tell). Of note – this is not the first time Laura had been to the Hemingway Museum – she visited as a child and had fond memories of the museum since that time.
The book is filled with humor. I quite enjoyed it when Nessie (officially known as Ernestine Hemingway), one of the 54 four cats that roam this historic home, museum and palm-shaded gardens was speaking or more appropriately, the narrator was telling the reader what Nessie was thinking.
“Being a cat, Nessie has never read any of the Nobel Prize winner’s acclaimed novels or stories. Also, being a cat, she has never actually counted the number of felines prowling the Hemingway estate-because cats can’t count. Nessie does, however, know each and every one of the cats personally. She knows them like the back of her six-toed paw-or however many toes she has.”
Needless to say – Nessie is one of my favorite characters in the story! Additionally, I loved the names given to the cats – Chew-Chew (a food thief), Whiskey (likes to sample drinks!), Spinderella, Larry, Curly, Moe, Boxer and Bullfighter (big-footed brothers) and Pawpa – just to name a few. Each of the cat’s personalities shone through the storytelling, also reflected in their name, and it felt like I knew each of the cats as if they were my own.
Humor is not all that the book has to offer though. We get to read about a number of romantic encounters – not just Laura and her suitor(s)… but also other characters as well (specifically I am thinking of Margarita Bouffet – the general manager of Hemingway House and dancer extraordinaire).
Finally, who wouldn’t love a book cover with so many cute cats? I count seven in total and they are all adorable. Can you tell I like cats ☺
I found this an enjoyable, fun read which took me on a journey. I would like to actually visit the museum myself! Time will tell. Regardless – I got to explore and experience the museum through this delightful story. If you are looking for a light read, with endearing characters (and cats…and other animals!), a bit of humor, some romance, a bit of inclement weather that all the humans and cats must survive and a really funky cab driver named Mama Marley – then pick up this book, get yourself a margarita (okay – that is optional) and immerse yourself in some seriously fun reading.
