Four Christian time travel romances by Sara Blackard.
Visit the wilderness of the Colorado Rockies as the Thomas family embrace the impossible to discover all God has in store for them. Fall in love with these riveting tumbles through time and space.
Vestige of Power Joseph, a man of the wilderness … thrown into the wilds of the city. Can Joseph and Victoria look past those grasping for power around them to their true destinies or will the shadows of doubt keep them from all God means for them?
Vestige of Hope Thrown out of his element into a time not his own, Hunter Bennett must overcome his doubts to save the life he never knew he wanted. Viola Thomas’s idyllic life in the new state of Colorado is shattered when her father fails to return from his winter trapping trip in the Rocky Mountains and a man tumbles into her life from the future. Now she must trust a man from a world far from her own.
Vestige of Legacy When Samara McKenna is violently attacked and somehow ends up one hundred and forty years in the past, it appears her dreams for the future have once again been ripped from her. While trekking through the Coloradan Rockies in 1879, Orlando Thomas finds a wounded woman. As he races to save her from the harsh wilderness bent on destroying them, he hopes his failures of the past don’t catch up to them.
Vestige of Courage Beatrice Thomas lives a simple life on an isolated mountain homestead in 1879 Colorado, but she prays for a life of adventure. When Chase Bennett stumbles upon the most beautiful woman he’s ever seen in the middle of the woods, she provides a distraction he doesn’t need. As their friendship grows, Beatrice is bewildered by the complicated lives of those in a modern-day world. The adventure she longed for may be more than she can handle. Torn between the past and the promise of a better future, can Beatrice move forward and grasp the vestige of courage that’s buried deep within her?

What a unique read! Time travel, romance and a mystery all in one! I really enjoyed reading all the books in this series and like that they’re all connected and you continue to learn more about characters in the previous books. Highly recommend this series!
This Christian Time Travel series is exciting. I am so glad I took a chance on another new author because diving into this series was an adventure I wouldn't have wanted to miss out on.
Overall Complete Series Reflections (4.9 founded to 5.0): This series is well done. It pulled together various elements, such as: time-travel; credible Christian historical fiction; refreshing romantic relationships that led to marriage; and throughout the series, uplifting integration of faith and practice was showcased. This series stands out from books that declare they are creative and uniquely Christian, but that fail to inspire. The heroes and heroines in this series honored God and didn’t marginalize Him in their lives. I found it pleasantly ironic that the word “vestige” appeared in each title, as the simple meaning refers to “a trace of something that is disappearing or no longer exists.” Each person who “traveled” had been living with an ache, a sense that something was missing in their lives, but eventually realized and that God had brought them to the place and time best fitted for them that He had directed them. I have at times felt that sterling Christian fiction was a disappearing commodity. Thanks Sara for this series. Below, I rate each book individually and give my reflection on each book.
1) Vestige of Power – a Novella – My Rate 5.0 I loved the way this book opened, Joseph’s “home deep in the mountains [of the Rockies] …suited him” (page 7). Right away, we know this is a man who lives by the scripture “be content with what you have…” This is not a man with angst, jealousies, and desires for what he can or doesn’t have. Without boasting, we read that Joseph believed himself capable, able to “hold his own in any situation” (page 7). He wasn’t young, but a man of thirty-one years, raised in the mountains and nothing much “caused him concern.” Rarely do you read of a person being content, capable, and skilled without also being cocky, proud, and arrogant. These characteristics become pivotal in the later chapters as Joseph and those he cares about encounter a perilous situation and scurrilous people.
The scene appears idyllic, pastoral even, but Blackard interjects a foreshadowing with the phrase “though something unknown caused him a sense of unease that stirred within his spirit” (page 7). And sure enough, on page 8 the creek bank he is walking along gives way, weighted down by a heavy bag of gold, he recently took out of the cave he owns, he plummets into the swollen, raging creek. Could he drown? No! The next paragraph tells us he is alive, having crashed onto a refuse heap, still clutching his gold and his rifle, smelling wretched in the middle of bustling Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania of 1852. WHAT!
He fortunately is greeted by a passing clergy, Pastor Timothy Hudson, who asks, “Are you all right?” Pastor Hudson recommends a “bracing cup of coffee” across the street at his church. Joseph recognizes his story will sound crazy and land him in an asylum, but he stresses that “it’s the truth.” He explains that a few minutes previous, he was walking in the Rocky Mountains. Pastor Hudson is unflappable, but also recommends the strongest coffee available for Joseph. Then, he asks if Joseph has ever heard the story of Philip & the Ethiopian eunuch in the Bible. Knowing this is a time/space travel work of fiction, it becomes apparent how the author will connect to the theme of God’s direction & guidance. Cleaver. As any reader of Time-travel or Tall-tails fiction knows, this genre requires the reader to suspend some manner of logic or reality. Sara Blackard accomplishes this with credibility, even as she links it to following God’s leading in regards to our life choices. Pastor Hudson points this out to Joseph. Pastor suggest that Joseph needs to “figure out why He moved you here” (page 13). Their pastoral session ends with Joseph asking Pastor Hudson to pray for him and directions to the best bank in town (to deposit his gold).
The rest of the story is the working out of the mystery & villainy that revolves around Victoria Reynolds and her Father Randall Reynolds. Joseph figures out his God-directed purpose for being in Pittsburgh. This prequel is a short, but totally satisfying read.
2) Vestige of Hope - My Rate 5.0 The main characters are Joseph’s two daughters, Viola & Beatrice Thomas, their brother Orlando, and Hunter. Hunter is a special ops soldier on a trek through the Colorado Wilderness. He encounters a mountain lion that takes a swipe at him; he spins away, loses his balance, and tumbles down the mountain. He flip-flops through time to land in the Colorado Wilderness in 1877. Viola & Beatrice rather quickly discern that Hunter is not from their time. Hunter, when he recognizes that there are absolutely no jet streams in the sky, also comes to the same conclusion that he is in 1877, although still shocking. This simple story is spiced up by the nefarious Sweeney family and the trouble they cause on a number of fronts.
Some of my standouts for book 2: Faith and Practice are seamlessly interwoven in this story. All three characters are very comfortable with communing with their Savior via prayer and that prayer is natural. They constantly thank God for his help and guidance. I found it very interesting the various ways natural healing was used. It was amusing, when Hunter asks about pain meds (like Ibuprofen or Acetaminophen), he is administered “willow bark tea” by Viola. I appreciated that all concerned (Viola, Beatrice, and eventually Hunter) acknowledge that God is the author of Time and Space, and since He transported Hunter to their time and place, He must have a reason and a plan for Hunter. The hidden room with the secret door into the mountain that hid the Thomas gold mine, their stored food, and other supplies were hid to keep them from unwanted attention by others. This same room protected Viola at one point from Link Sweeney and likely was the reason Link and his brothers were skulking around the various Thomas family members. This book points to various ways that all family members worked to support the family. It also showed the various ways that we have been so blessed by the myriad of conveniences we take for granted. I read this book twice and I enjoyed and was blessed by the reading each time.
3) Vestige of Legacy - My Rate: 4.8 Legacy opens with missionary kid, Samara McKenna in a desperate situation, but escapes via time-travel. Samara doesn’t realize what has happen; she thinks she is still being pursued by a crazed killer. The writing is really tight, as a reader, I figuratively “held my breath,” fearful of Samara’s escape from her captor. It is here we learn of her estrangement from God. She prays, “Lord, help me.” But then derisively thinks, I haven’t prayed for years and doubt God will listen to me anyway. She is rescued by Orlando Thomas, a knight in shining armor. The story details Samara’s progression from acceptance that she has time-traveled, coming to grips with the joys and limitations of 1879, living through the time period of the Meeker Massacre, and her turning from rejecting God and her parent’s legacy to embracing God’s love and His care for her.
My Reflections on book 3: Orlando was awesome. He was a natural healer, using herbs he cultivated and dried for future use. He also was a shepherd, and in all he did, he pointed people to Jesus, the Good Shepherd. I have to admit that Samara McKenna took me a bit of time to like her character. She had serious trust issues, from lack of trust in God to lack of trust in her fellow man. She had lived a hard life, and wore a hard shell of protection around her, effectively keeping people away. We learn Samara’s story bit by bit, which also means, as a reader we gradually learn and understand her situation and issues. For me, this explains my gradual positive opinion change about her. Samara’s epiphany hits in Chapter 18, when she believes she is about to die; she confesses to the Lord, and sings a beautiful hymn, “Before the Throne of God Above.” This whole scene and the rescue are really potent. I’ll end with a cute character, Orlando’s dog Zeus. I love dogs and Zeus was a fabulous dog, amazingly trained, and definitely added to the story.
4) Vestige of Courage - My Rate 4.8 Courage is the story of Beatrice Thomas (Viola’s sister) and Chase Bennett (Hunter’s brother). This time the “vestige” that Beatrice has always felt, the problem she has struggled are answered, just NOT the way she planned. Again, God rescues from a bad situation, but differently. Beatrice is rescued from her frustration about lack of social interaction and adventure and Chase discovers the answers he craves concerning what happened to his brother. This story has many connecting threads and much for the reader to consider.
My Reflections on the last book in the series: It was a great read, but not what I was expecting, but upon finishing, just what was needed. Beatrice in Hope was a little caustic, and not always willing to be a group/family player. At times, her spiritual walk was more self-focused and not God-focused. But God knew what she needed and we see her grow and change. Chase seemed a little shallow at the beginning of Courage, but he also is given some challenges and forced to move from reliance on himself to trusting God. The secondary characters help build this story. Every book in this series was great and can be read and reread again and again. These books were more than fiction, they pricked at our hearts. P.S. Some of the scenes (attack scenes) could be intense for sensitive readers. The scenes are not protracted, but they are present.
Vestige of Power: This was a new and fascinating take on time/locale travel. I was thoroughly engrossed. I adored the emphasis on character versus money. I sincerely appreciated the constant search for God’s will and not being led by emotions. This was a lovely novelette romance. The historical aspect was engaging and interesting also. The thread of danger and suspense was icing on the cake. I also feel that this book is setting the stage for the rest of the series that I expect will tie in to the Prequel story “Mission Out of Control.”
Vestige of Hope: Time travel, danger, and following the Lord’s voice and will. An intense book that follows up after the prequel with Hunter. We meet new characters and get a taste of life about a hundred and fifty years ago. I loved this unique rescuer romance and and interested to see where this series goes.
Vestige of Legacy: This book is so different from the others but also a good read. I enjoyed the characters and their journey and struggles. I really liked the chunk of history woven in. I’m sad this series is almost done.
Vestige of Courage: Wow. Up until now, Hunter’s book was my favorite, but I think this one blew it out of the water. All of the emotions, they really drew me and gripped me. I flew through this book. I love how much it involves Zeke and bleeds right into his security series. I’m excited to head over there now and keep this story going.
I really liked this series. The time-traveling aspect of it was very well thought out. I appreciated that Sara did not try to explain how traveling back (and staying) in time would change the future and instead let the characters trust that God would handle that. That is one of the hardest aspects of time-traveling books and many authors try to explain things away but then everything gets muddled in the explanation. Unlike other authors, Sara has a great talent for incorporating religion into her books without beating the reader over the head with her views. One of the best things about a series is how different characters are able to be developed and then have their own stories with their own struggles. Each romance was new and exciting and each adventure had just enough danger. You won't be sorry you read this series!
Loved this series! It was such a fun time travel thing and I love how she wove elements of each person's story into the other stories. The all fit together so well and I loved that. The element of time travel is interesting and handled so well. I went from one book to the other with hardly a break, so I was glad to get them all in a set. I think this is a series I'll read again, which is something I rarely do. Her characters have so much strength and integrity, and even though they face big difficulties, the are true to who they are and grow into even stronger, better people. That makes for a good read to me! I won't finish a book if I don't like the characters or if I find them tedious, incredibly stupid or shallow. This whole series was a delight. Thank you, Sara!
This series is totally intriguing and spell binding. Two families become intwined with one another by traveling back through time over 150 years. First is Hunter who established a relationship with Viola. Their tale is exciting. Next is Samara who beguiles Viola’s brother Orlando. Through Indians and land grabbers they fight to hold their own property. The third time traveler is sister Beatrice who travels forward to be found by Hunter’s brother Chase. Lots more history is revealed to Beatrice and Chase through a trunk full of letters by the family left behind in the 1800’s. This is so captivating. This last segment will make you extremely emotional as you ponder the sense of loss the letters bring.
Not sure what prompted me to read this series, as time travel (science fiction, fantasy) has never interested me. But I am so glad I did. There is a bit of mystery. The characters are definitely well developed. While the setting is in 2 different centuries, the story line is more focused on how we handle being out of our element. Do we cower in fear or march bravely forward? There is a bit of history regarding the Ute tribe. There is a bit of environmental issues with how the land is developed and how spruce beetles impact the forests. But mostly it is about warm loving compassionate people who reach out to help. It is a testimony to how God is always there for us. And yes there is evil - those individuals who mean to do harm to others.
Sara Blackard has me hooked no matter what genre she is writing. I wouldn't say I'm the target market for this book, however, I love me a good romance with a twist and this has everything I need in a feel good romance. There's danger, suspense, time travel and a hunky heroine, not to mention a none too gentle tug on the heart strings. This is sweet romance with Christian characters of deep faith. Each book in the box builds on the one before but are so very different from each other. I definitely didn't see the book 4 plot coming so that was a great twist. Can highly recommend this box set!!
I love having all of the stories together in one volume. Instead of having to search for the next story, I can just turn the page to continue this wonderful series. Such fascinating people who you would love to know...and you get the chance to do just that. Sara makes traveling back and forth through time feel possible. It struck me that God was the first and ultimate time traveler. Get ready to experience romance, suspense and adventure through the pages of this book. Thanks for taking us along in this trip through times!
This series was a lovely surprise. It took me a bit to decide to read it as I typically do not enjoy time travel books at all; however, having enjoyed everything else I have read by Sara Blackard, I decided to take a chance. I really enjoyed them all. The characters’ tumbles through time was a unique aspect of the story that added to the overall book instead of being the only story line. I was quickly drawn into the suspense of each story and fell in love with everyone in them. I definitely recommend this series.
This set of books have everything! Imagination. Excitement. Adventure. Mystery. Romance. But most of all each story tells of God’s eternal love. I loved each story for different reasons but the last one was really good. I especially liked the chest of letters to speak to the future. So, dear readers, get your cup of tea and box of chocolates, carve out some time and slip into these novels. You will be transported to great entertainment!
Strangely, due to dreams I've been having the past few weeks, I've been thinking a lot about the references to fluctuations in time and space that I've found in the Bible. Then I see this series in one of the many Christian fiction newsletters I get in my e-mail inbox. I'm so glad I got it. The stories are fascinating. And who knows? I mean, God can do anything.
Wow. What a great series. I don’t usually read time travel genres, but this is beautifully written.
Each story has sweet sweet romance, suspense and inspiring faith elements with characters living daily lives for God.
Should be read in series order. God honouring romance. You won’t want this series to end but luckily there are two spin off series! (falling for Zeke in the Stryker security series & Roaring Fork series)
I enjoyed the series as a whole. The first book ended abruptly and could have been developed more. I was glad I kept reading the rest, they were much more developed. I liked the characters and even though the storyline was a little farfetched the were a nice light, entertaining read.
I discovered Sara Black are quite by accident. And I'm sure glad I did. I completely enjoyed reading the Vestige series. I think that, if you like clean romances, you will love this series. Even if you don't care for time travel books. The stories themselves transcend the genre and become totally engrossing. I'm off now to start the Stryker series.
The vestig of time series from Sara Blackard is a great well written series based on Christian principles. They are very exciting stories where you get to know the characters well. It's about brave people who will do anything to protect and save others. Each story is unique. A very captivating series to read that makes you travel back and forth through time.
I have always been a fan of time travel books. This series did not disappoint. The characters love of Christ was inspiring, as the message of strong faith in God's will prevail throughout this series. Well written and well edited.
WHAT AN AMAZING CREATIVE PREMISE! FOR THOSE WHO WANT A LITTLE OUT OF THE ORDINARY THIS IS A SCI FI/FRONTIER/CHRISTIAN SAGA. I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THEM ALL. THANK U!
This is a great set of Christian Romantic Suspense books (4) with a time travel element. The characters are so engaging & the story lines interesting throughout. I highly recommend this set, & all Sara Blackard’s books. I’ve read all 22!
I just finished the Vestige series, and it was so wonderful! Hunter and Viola, Orlando and Samara, and Chase and Beatrice! Each one of their stories captured my interest, kept me turning pages far past my bedtime, and looking forward to the next! Vestige of Power; This is the prequel to the rest of the series. It will give you a glimpse of how the parents of the main characters in the rest of the series met and built their lives together. I'm not usually into time travel stories, but these are so well written, and use Gods' will as the venue for the time travel. God puts people where they need to be to save someone , or to live the life that He has planned for them. Vestige of Hope; Hunter and Violas' story. Hunter is modern day special forces. After a failed mission, he is hiking in the mountains to try to clear his mind. He falls and hits his head, and wakes up in the mid 1800s. Viola finds him and rescues him. But Viola and her family are facing threats of their own, and Hunter finds himself protecting them. While Hunter comes to terms with living 150 years in the past, Viola wrestles with the idea of falling for a man from the distant future. There is plenty of drama, humor and danger to go along with their budding romance. Highly Recommend! Vestige of Legacy; Samara is a modern day woman who escapes an ugly attack by being transported back in time. Orlando finds her and takes her in to heal her wounds. He is a strong Christian man, and he struggles with Samaras' lack of faith. This is a wonderfully written story about love, an Gods' redemption. The characters are so well written, with all of their foibles and insecurities, as well as their strengths. Sara Blackards' stories capture your interest and your heart. Vestige of Courage; Sara Blackard changes it up in this installment of the Vestige series. Beatrice is transported from her mid 1800s mountain home to the modern day world. Chase is in the mountains searching for his missing brother. When he comes across Beatrice, they find that they each have answers to the others' questions. As Chase helps Beatrice navigate through this strange new world, romance blossoms. This as a great conclusion to the series. I especially liked them finding old diaries that answered so many questions about the interim years between the two worlds. They really helped to make the series feel complete.
This series involving time travel, was the first I'd read from Sara. I originally read them individually but also recently purchased the entire set as a gift to myself and my grandchildren. I frequently like to reread books, and I knew these would be ones I'd want to read again. Also I thought the story lines would appeal to my teenaged grandchildren, at the same time being inspirational, which is hard to accomplish. They had adventure, romance, and mystery, not to mention a new twist on the time travel theme. I highly recommend Vestige in Time.
I really enjoyed this whole series and I highly recommend it for a fun time travel escape. Two highlights for me: 1. The prequel with an interesting take on time/distance travel that made the story feel more plausible than most, and 2. The final story that was a delightful wrap up of all the stories leading to it. I actually remember feeling giddy as I read the last book...and that doesn't happen to me often...hence, 5 stars. Well done, Sara, and thank you so much!
I was a little bit skeptical of the whole time travel idea. Because usually it is shown as magic or done using magic; not in this book, here Sara Blackard has used it to show God's unfathomable power and the amazing plans He has for us.
There were times I held my breath or wanted to cry with the characters; and the were plenty more times that I laughed so hard my sides almost hurt, whether with the characters or at them and some of the situations.
This is a lovely time travel series. The author has done a great deal of research into the various times she sends her characters back into. The characters are well developed and a real treat to get to know. I loved how they all came together with their dreams.
