Ahoy, muties — the X-Men sail at dawn! A glorious new mutant era has begun on Krakoa, but some nations are preventing mutants from escaping to their promised homeland. Which is where Captain Kate Pryde and her seafaring allies come in! Funded by Emma Frost and the Hellfire Trading Company, Kate and her crew of Storm, Pyro, Bishop and Iceman sail the seven seas as the Marauders, rescuing mutants in need! But the real cutthroats are back home in the Hellfire Club’s Inner Circle, where Sebastian Shaw has recruited a new Black Bishop to aid in his machinations against the Club’s two queens. A life on the ocean waves involves clashes with the anti-mutant Verendi, the size-changing pest Yellowjacket and more! But when tragedy strikes the Marauders, Krakoa will be reeling from an unthinkable — and perhaps insurmountable — death!
One of the best Krakoa era entries, it has a wonderful blend of action, humour, backstabbing, and politics. The roster is small and contained, allowing for more nuanced interactions and moments that are sorely missing in the bigger, more bloated pieces. Of course, I can't go without mentioning my love for Emma Frost. She continues to be one of the most charismatic and interesting characters (biased, I know), and every panel with her is an absolute joy. Perfect for those who want fun over long-winded world-building, Marauders is the breath of fresh air that cruises into greatness amongst its less than engaging peers.
The Marauders is a decent comic, though I'd probably give it 3.5. Instead of a 4, but I rounded it up instead of down. For context, mutants have an island nation, and the marauders travel the world rescuing mutants whose country won't let them flee. It's a nice premise, but the book is more interested in big multi issue stories rather than once off missions, which I'd have liked to see more of. Emma Frost continues to be the most dynamic X character, and Duggen knows exactly how to use her. Her relationship with Kitty (wait, no, Kate!) is the highlight of the book, and shows how far both of them have come over the years. Kate makes a great leader, though it's odd seeing her lead a team with Ororo on it. Some of the plots get a bit muddy, which is a trend with some of the Krakoa line, but I think this is the most coherent series so far; story wise at least. There are a few rotating artists, but they all do a nice job. I do feel Kurt should be on this team. His Way of X stuff is very good, but all his best X buddies are manning a rescue ship. Its weird that he isn't a part of it. It's also really gay. Really really gay. So that's awesome 👌
I first came across Marauders via Dawn of X and thought the concept of Kitty's unique situation with Krakoa and how it began to play out was very interesting and unique, and after reading the first twelve issues I was relieved to find the idea had not grown stale but had been thoroughly enjoyable from start to finish. This is definitely one of my favorite series of the X-Men renaissance we've been blessed to have received and I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoyed Jonathan Hickman's X-Men books and what other writers and artists have done with these characters. Marauders feels like a celebration of X-Men and the large supporting cast that has grown in the last 40 or so years. Go into with an open mind and no expectations and I think you'll be surprised at how charming and engaging this story is and how well these characters are handled by the creative team.
For me, Marauders was one of the standouts of the Dawn of X era. Re-reading it collected like this, it’s even better. I love the balance between in the moment banter between characters and going on little adventures, versus the long-term politics and conflict within and outside of the Hellfire Trading Company. You can obviously tell Duggan is as big a fan of characters like Kate, Emma, Storm and Iceman as I am. Their interactions are even more fun when you know all of their history together and can tell how much they’ve grown. The art is really nice and colorful as well. It’s a shame that there’s several different artists instead of one, but all are doing a good job and the look is fairly consistent. Especially loved seeing Emma’s constant outfit changes and Bobby constantly being drawn as a gay thirst-trap.
A second read, after previously reading these issues in the two paperback collections. One of the best Krakoa series is even better! Duggan is telling a truly serialized story here, and so it's a pleasure to read twice as much at once, to see the redevelopment of Kate, her growing relationship with Emma, the rise of Shaw, the development of Pyro, the expansion of the Hellfire houses, and so much more.
Truly, a great comic, with its focus on politics mixed with friendship. This is the type of adult storytelling that the new era of X-Men allows!

This book was just fun. The best parts are probably those where Kate Pryde and her teammates cruise the seas and have a good time bringing mutants to Krakoa. Even the political intrigue bits are fun and the arc seems to set up further stories nicely. This was my first forward into the Hickman era of the X-men after House of X/Powers of X and it was an enjoyable one. It’s not perfect, but I’m now even more excited to jump into the X-men by Hickman book sitting on the shelf next to this one.
One of the better X-men Krakoan story arcs. The premise was interesting, the characters are relatable, and some plot twists were really exciting. An enjoyable read!
