Rick Remender is an American comic book writer and artist who resides in Los Angeles, California. He is the writer/co-creator of many independent comic books like Black Science, Deadly Class, LOW, Fear Agent and Seven to Eternity. Previously, he wrote The Punisher, Uncanny X-Force, Captain America and Uncanny Avengers for Marvel Comics.
Big book with some different but connecting storylines. Steve Rogers gets smashed repeatedly Daredevil style while raising Arnim Zola's kid, Ian, in an alternate world. Steve returns old and powerless as Sam becomes the new Cap while Ian becomes his sidekick, Nomad. Then a retro story of how the Iron Nail was in SHIELD... easily the best story, awesome spy game with Winter Soldier... plus Lord Drain looks like David Bowie, super cool. Next is a Sam as Cap vs the Scarecrow story which was ok. Followed by Sam vs Zemo, where Zemo is brutal as hell... very cool. Last story was a Nomad in a altered future state where the evil republicians were Hydra and heroes were Democrats... complete politic slimeball trash except for Lil Ultron and a tarded out Pym.
Wanted to finish this before my trip to Hawaii but didn’t get to. Oh well, I’m finished now. Pretty solid stuff. Starts off with Cap getting whisked away to dimension Z where Zola rains supreme and was cooking up a scheme to come back and invade earth. Here we meet Zola’s son, Leopold who cap ends up taking and raising as his own and naming him Ian. They go through some crazy shit fighting to survive agains Zola’s mutates and his daughter, Jet Black. That ends in tragedy as Cap makes it back to the main 616. Although dealing with the sadness of the loss he experienced in dimension Z, it’s back to business. Bring in Nuke who has been given bad orders and is out on a killing spree. Plus we have Ran Shen, a former shield agent who turned on them and became the Iron Nail. You get the back story on all that in the mini series in here called Winter Soldier: The Bitter March. That was really good. Iron Nail teams up with Dr Mindbubble ( crazy name ) and others on a wild plot. Pretty good action throughout. At the end of it all is where Steve becomes and old man and Falcon takes the mantle of the New Capitan America. We have a few other mini series in the back too. All-New Captain America: Fear him dealing with Sam and Ian teaming up against the Scarecrow. All-New Captain America 1-6 with that same duo taking on Zemo, Sin, Taskmaster and Baron Blood. And finally Hail Hydra 1-4 which has Ian finding himself on Battleworld during Hickman’s Secret Wars. All were pretty good. Some ended leaving some loose ends which I wonder if they will be continued in Nick Spencer’s Captain America omnibus which is up next.
I got to give Rick Remender credit man because I feel sorry for ANYBODY trying to follow up to the amazing Ed Brubaker run. This run has its highs and it also has its lows but overall the positive outweighed the negatives for me. Remender took a sci-fi route with Cap’s story kicking it off with the DIMENSION Z storyline which I enjoyed. There’s a character in that story whom we get introduced to named IAN, and I loveeeeee that character sooo much and I won’t spoil why.. but I want MORE stories from him.
Most of all, we get introduced to a NEW Captain America later on in the run which I’m sure everybody knows who it is as this point and I LOVED THE NEW CAP. His stories are awesome, so cool to see how the world is trying to get used to him being the new Cap. And also seeing a roster of Cap’s old foes show up was also fun. So inspiring reading how both of these Captain America’s pushed themselves through their tribulations. I’m glad Remender wasn’t trying to repeat what happened in the last run and tried to do his own thing. He gets massive props for that. You have artists in here like John Romita Jr, Carlos Pacheco, Nic Klein, and others doing stellar artwork. Well done.
Didnt love this one. The Dimension Z and Zola stuff, as well as the new captain america stuff, were great but most of the book didnt really grab me. Its clear Remender had a vision for the first bit but the rest wasnt as interesting to me
There was only one way to follow up the best Captain America run ever ( Brubaker run) and that is to go in a totally different direction. Remender goes crazy and full on sciencefiction as Steve Rogers is zapped to Dimension Z another world where he spend years and years. This is Remender channeling his inner Kirby. Weird action deeply rooted in said scifi. This omnibus is action packed and somehow Rick Remender always has great artists attached to his work. Most is done by John Romita Jr. Which i dig. His work is inked by industry legend Klaus Janson, and together they are amazing. The other artists are very good aswell, and i love that Remender is not afraid to shake things up, making Sam Wilson the new Cap. This omibus ends with a couple mini series not all great, i liked Winter Soldier The Bitter March, and All New Captain America, but found the Hail Hydra series at the very end not really good. Cap remains one of my favorite characters, and i am happy to have this in the ever growing Cap collection.
While this run started off pretty strange with Captain America trapped in Dimension Z, the story was still interesting and Remender did a great job of showing the character of Steve Rogers. It was a bit of a surprise after reading Brubaker’s Cap, but the new direction worked out pretty well. The low point of the omnibus was the All-New Captain America: Fear Him. The Scarecrow villain was a big rip off of the DC villain with the same name. It just felt like a transplant. The omni picks back up afterwards with a strong finish though.
