"Crom laughs at you all. Only a strong arm bends the world!"

Conan Chronicles Epic Collection, Vol. 7 collects Conan the Avenger #1-19.

Under Dark Horse, story continuity always carries from one Conan series to the next. This new series picks up a few weeks after Bêlit's death in Conan the Barbarian #24.

This series is often cited as the turning point when the Dark Horse run begins to decline in quality. I do not understand this perception. Van Lente's writing is serviceable enough. I enjoy Brian Ching's art, even though he sometimes draws Conan too skinny. The coloring by Michael Atiyeh is excellent throughout. The centerpiece adaptation of "Xuthul of the Dusk" is superb.

This collection includes:

"Shadows Over Kush" (Issues #1-6) -- This is an adaptation of "The Snout in the Dark", a story fragment that was incomplete at the time of Robert E. Howard's death. He left a detailed outline explaining his intention for the rest of the story. Unfortunately, the story is too convoluted; it features twice as many characters as it needs for a fairly flimsy plot. This comic adaptation is probably too faithful to that outline, and it underwhelms for the same reason.

"The Damned Horde" (Issues #7-12) -- A fun if not overly original story arc that sees Conan and the survivors from Shebbah seeking a fortune in lost Stygian gold. Thoth-amon makes a return in Issue #10, which incidentally has some of Ching's best artwork of the series. Conan's arch villain was last seen in Kurt Busiek's framing story, which seems to have been dropped since Conan #50. I hope the sorcerer's reappearance here indicates Dark Horse will fully tie the events of the current narrative into that frame story set far in the future…

"Xuthal of the Dusk" (Issues #13-15) -- Guest artist Guiu Vilanova delivers a visual feast of contrasting styles and shifting perspectives in this three-issue arc. Van Lente lifts the dialogue and narration directly from Howard's short story (aka "The Slithering Shadow"). Eric Powell contributes three stunning covers. A++

"Blood Oasis" (Issues #16-19) -- A mysterious citadel in a desert oasis is manned by an order of silent masked monks. Their purpose is to keep a perpetual flame burning that holds the Elder God Nazu at bay. But events spiral out of control when Janissa the Widowmaker (last seen in Conan #39) and her band of freed slaves tries to storm the citadel by force.

The only bonus features included in this book are three character sketches by Ching.

Decent and entertaining but not the most memorable of collections.

Not as good as previous collections. Stories dragged on a bit. Brian Chings artwork is good though.
