"StoryPeople" is about the memories you have of your life. The stories & drawings on these pages are selected favorites from the first three StoryPeople "Mostly True" (1993), "Still Mostly True" (1994) & "Going Somewhere Soon" (1995). Still mostly true, just like before. We hope they start you on a great adventure, the way they have so many others. Let us know how it goes...
I've loved Brian Andreas for years, but never owned one of his books until this past summer, when someone very special gifted the old roomies and me with a book of his stuff. I took it with me when I left the house (it was selfish and I know it). If you've never read Brian Andreas, it's a singular and wholly fulfilling experience that I can't describe.
Inscription: "The voices in my head said this belonged in the House of Hot. I listen to the voices. -Hedgie"
A couple favorites:
"When we lived in the city we used to leave the lights on to keep away the burglars. Now we leave the lights off to keep away the neighbors. My mom says it's because there's always a chance we'll like the burglars."
"They came to sit and dangle their feet off the edge of the world
and after awhile they forgot everything but the good and true things they would do someday."
"It was a summer's night and the smell of the old rose bush was heavy as rain and she asked me in
Found this in a Little Free Library. It's a quirky little collection of musings, whimsical memories and dream fragments accompanied by weird stick-people drawings. It was a quick read--I needed something I could finish quickly for my 19th book of my 19-book reading challenge of 2021.
I find that as I read and reread Andreas's books, different stories hit me strongly at differnt times. I like them all, but some just really, really, really resonate for me. It's interesting to me that the same book can be so different for me time and time again.
"It is a collection of goofy-looking, childlike drawings and enigmatic strange little aphorisms, all the way through the book. The pages aren't numbered and there are no chapters, so you just have to wander around and experience whatever you happen to find. Whatever time you spend with this book will be worth it."
I for one love the way Andreas mind works and have loved finding random treasures of wisdom. It reminds me that everyone has a story to tell. Everyone.
I love everything Brian Andreas publishes! I own every book and have several framed prints in my home and psychotherapy office. There is a wonderful little shop in Apalachicola, Florida that sells his work. My mother and I would go there and read sections aloud to each other and laugh and laugh. We would buy one book each time and go have a marvelous lunch of grouper, shrimp, and oysters overlooking the water and I would read passages to her. Delightful memories! Thank you, Brian Andreas!
My best friend from the dorms my freshman year and I read this book together. They are little poems of irony and are sometimes depressing, sometimes funny, sometimes make you smile and are just amazing. He has a ton of books too like this so its really fun!
If there was only the text itself, I might have given this four stars, because I really like most of the little stories. But I must say--the drawings creep me out, and I just can't give it more than three stars because of it.
A little book of art, poems and magic. And then it is so much more than words and drawings and joy. I got this book at a little packed with treasures crazyshop in Galveston before several hurricanes probably closed down the bewitched place...but I have a photo of it somewhere amidst my books. Buy and read this book, especially if you don't like poetry or art. It'll put a spell on you.
A mostly funny, clever, and like-able collection of Andreas' word art/poetry with only a few not-very-family-friendly pieces that didn't appeal to me. A good anthology for those who are fans of Brian Andreas' art; I picked it up because it was free at my library book store and it was a good once-through fast read, but I probably wouldn't have ever bought it. A few particularly poignant selections in the book I'll probably frame or use as starting points for further art, but I don't think I'll hang on to the book itself.
It's set up a little differently than most books. Really, it reads like a personal diary with small poems, pictures, and thoughts put in wherever they fit, more than an actual book.
But there are some LOVELY passages, touching thoughts, and overall, it has a very personal feel.
One of the most wonderful things I've ever read. It allows the reader to be told a story and engage in the act of storytelling. Uplifting and perfect for days with sadness or lacking direction. Perfect for discussion with friends and family. I don't normally write reviews (see the sparseness of this) but I had to for this one.
I keep this, and Brian's other books, next to my desk. Whenever I need to refresh my mind/spirit, I randomly open one of the books and -re-read a few stories. Though I've read them all many times, they always feel new and ALWAYS delight.
I just love Brian Andreas's stuff. He combines innocence, wit, strong stories of the heart, and cynicsm in a way that brings me great joy. What a wonderful mind and imagination!
I LOVE BRIAN ANDREAS!!!!!! His little snippets of quotes are just so amazing and inspiring and awesome!! Definitely recommend to anyone who likes any kind of poetry
