A very easy to understand, funny and insightful read which I couldn’t have read at a better time. I picked this up at my local bookstore some time ago which was perfect since I was about to graduate (which I did a few days ago!!). This book really helped me navigate what’s about to come in terms of my creative career and how to be prepared for it. It gives a lot of practical tips which I was already able to apply, so it’s safe to say this book motivated me to do something which I consider a great thing!
Packed with good, practical, and specific advice on working in the creative industries. I recommend it.
Probably more helpful for a complete newbie than someone who's got years of experience, but that'll depend on each person. Also, I think it'd also be helpful to people considering a career change that means starting fresh in a different industry.
Personally I finished my design degree five years ago and have been working full-time for about four years and while there wasn't much here that felt completely new to me (probably a good thing), it was still a great read in that it was an excellent refresher/reminder of things I knew already but hadn't thought about much, as well as a bit of encouragement/inspiration.
It was a fun read, too! Paul Woods writes in a style that's enjoyable and effortless to read while still packing in all the necessary information. (Oh and there are also fun [and useful] flow chart quizzes.)
My manager at work gifted me this book and it couldn't have come at a better time. The author gives advice on how to get started in the creative industries, from agency work, to freelance, and everything in between! I'm definitely going to keep referencing it throughout my creative career.
fun, practical, easy read - Just the way the author frames the tips for right after you graduate doesn’t completely make sense to me, some tips are handy way in advance and some tips seem to be more suited for a bit later down the line.
