5☆ Quirky, Fun, Exciting and more than a little bit Boozy!
Wow Art Boozel is one quirky, Fun Cocktail Book with a bit of a twist.
Each Cocktail is inspired by Modern and Contemporary Artists. Oh and if you love Modern art work your in for a bit of a treat!
The Cocktails are fun and very inventive, but also fairly easy to follow. I must admit some of the ingredients/ alcohol I had never heard of before but I'm definitely excited to find out more!
What I really enjoyed was that each cocktail has the information behind the artist, so not only are you getting delicious sounding cocktails your also getting an educational treat too.
This would make the perfect gift for someone who loves cocktails or is after a quirky gift and loves Art. Overall it's a big Cheers from me!
Thank you to Chronicle Books and Netgalley for this copy which I reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
First off, the cover on this one is all kinds of outstanding! 🙌🏻 The book itself was also all kinds of fun. The graphics were bright and colorful. You get a little of history about each artist. Then easy to follow instructions on how to create the drinks named after each of them. 🍸🍹🧉 I can totally see this book being used at a party (themed or otherwise) for a fun evening with friends. 🙌🏻
First of all, art and booze are two things I adore so finding this book was SO MUCH FUN!
Each artist had a signature drink and a small description on who they were and why the drink was a perfect fit. Each drink as meticulously paired and it showed. I loved how the authors picked artists from every walk of life as if was extremely diverse. The illustrations were also amazing. I am excited to use some of these pairings on my own blog account.
*I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review*
Note to publisher/authors: Is the title a play on "Art Brothel"? Because the title of the book isn't super appealling and doesn't really convey what the reader's getting. If it's a pun, it's a real stretch.
This book is fun, and it would be a great gift for art lovers/cocktail aficionados (which in San Francisco is a perfect circle, and the only place where I could envision seeing many of these cocktails.)
Like many Chronicle Books, it's a fun, fast, easy read. You get a brief page overview of the artist, their time, their art and impact on the art world, and the recipe for a cocktail that is essentially drinkable art.
But here's where I might diverge from many readers. While I appreciate the mixology and attention to detail in the crafting of these signature artistic cocktails, , I'll be real: for the most part, they're REALLY fiddly, and require a lot of specialized ingredients that may be difficult to obtain, or prohibitively expensive. Or, some are just fancier versions of cocktails that exist already with one thing different (looking at you, James Turrell cocktail, aka Blackberry Bramble). Though creative and surely tasty, I can't see many people making for than one or two of them, and certainly not at an art-themed get-together, which I think, is one of the book's intended uses. I can't imagine searching our activated charcoal to make one specific cocktail, nor can I envision a person at a party making a string of dolled-up Ramos Fizzes. But I CAN see them on the menu of a fancy hipster cocktail bar in SF Bay Area or Portland. These are definitely drinks you'd rather have a bartender make FOR you, than try to master yourself, though if you're the adventurous drinking type, then take a crack at them.
In terms of artists, there's quite a bit of diversity and inclusion, representing 20th-21st century artists from around the world. As with any anthology-type collection, it's always interesting to see who's included and who's left out, and the only artist that I was surprised NOT to find in here is Orlan, who would have been a weird, wonderful, maybe even vaguely terrifying inclusion.
The long & the short of it is: neat overview of art, introduced me to some I didn't know and now I'm interested in discovering their work,. Creative drinks, if a little fro-frou & fiddly. Hey, I guess art itself is a little fiddly and frou-frou, so it makes sense that these cocktails should be approached more as a small, ephemeral object of art that you can drink. So maybe it's performance art, as well as a cocktail.
“The most celebrated cocktail ever named in tribute to an artist is the peach-prosecco concoction known as a Bellini. Created at Harry’s Bar in Venice, Italy, in the 1940s by Giuseppe Cipriani, the drink had a pinkish hue that reminded Cipriani of the toga of a saint in a painting by the Renaissance artist Giovanni Bellini. Today, the Bellini might be more of a household name than the artist who inspired it, but the rich colours of Bellini’s work live on through his namesake drink.”
Chronicle Books produces beautiful books and ‘Art Boozel’ written by Jennifer Croll and illustrated with Kelly Swarmi’s creative, colourful illustrations is no exception. This fun, inventive hardcover includes lists of the basic equipment required to create cocktails, the glassware, cocktail ingredients, garnishes, rims, and syrups.
While the cocktail ingredients are important to provide a balanced flavour, for example, various combinations of alcohol; infused alcohols; simple syrup; citrus juices; eggs and foamers, and shrubs, the flavoured simple syrups read like an exotic found poem from cardamom syrup to hickory smoke syrup to turmeric-ginger syrup and pomegranate syrup.

I had such fun with this this playful, imaginative tribute to dazzling, challenging boundary-breaking modern and contemporary artists. Sláinte, santé and cheers!
A huge thank you to @NetGalley and @ChronicleBooks for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Art Boozel is a well designed and light-hearted collection of cocktails inspired by 30+ modern and contemporary artists (such as Max Ernst, Anish Kapoor, Banksy, etc). There are several detailed pages on glassware, ingredients, garnishes and rim additives before the recipes. Everything is designed in a simple, san serif, high contrast font that is very easy to read. Each drink has a bio on the artist, an illustrated artists' image, and a fun recipe inspired by themes for the artist's work such as edible rose and chrysanthemum as a garnish for The Kehinde Wiley, gold shimmer and turmeric for The Gustav Klimt, and a whole hibiscus flower ice cube for The Georgia O'Keeffe.
I recieved an e-ARC from NetGalley for review. This book is set to publish August 2nd, 2021
I absolutely delighted in turning page after page of this fascinating, artistically designed cocktail recipe book by Jennifer Croll with illustrations by Kelly Shami. I read this aloud to my sister because I couldn’t help myself from sharing the incredible blurbs on each artist and inspiration that helped to create interesting and one-of-a-kind drinks suited for each artist’s style. I have made a couple of the more tasty (and less daunting) drinks to begin with, but I will definitely be making the more ribald drinks in the future, when the mood strikes and adventure calls forth!
I received an ARC from the author and publisher in exchange for an honest review.
As a curious art aficionado, I had to pick up Art Boozel even though I'm not much of a drinker, let alone a cocktail maker.
I was pleasantly surprised at the variety of artists Jennifer Croll included in this book, penning brief yet beautiful biographies to accompany each artist and their signature cocktail.
Although some of these cocktails might be a little more involved and abstract than I'm willing to try making myself, Art Boozel introduced me to several artists I wasn't familiar with before. I look forward to using this book as both a reference guide for expanding my knowledge of art history and crafting mixed drinks.
This book would make a wonderful gift for an art lover or cocktail lover in your life! I see this as more beautiful coffee table book and less in-with-the-cookbooks. I love the illustrations- so fun and bright! The Frida Kahlo cocktail sounds the best- with watermelon juice, tequila and lime, garnished with an orchid!
My one complaint is that I wish I could have glimpsed a sample of the works of these artists in this book, but I do see how that would not be consistent with the style of the book. And there’s always google for that!
Having an index at the end was a really nice touch, too.
Art Boozel is such a fun book! I enjoyed reading about some of my favorite artists, as well as being introduced to new ones, and discovering cocktails inspired by these colorful and interesting folks. Cocktails have become a big part of my Saturday nights at home over the past year and I look forward to crafting many of the concoctions from this book, starting with the Henri Matisse and the Diego Rivera.
I loved the whimsical art and think this would be an amazing book to gift to art and cocktail lovers alike.
Thank you to Chronicle Books and NetGalley for this ARC.
Disclaimer: I was provided a digital version of this book in exchange for an honest and fair review.
Thank you NetGalley for such a fun book combining art and alcohol. I smiled as I read the descriptors used to explain the work of the artist and then REALLY enjoyed comparing the cocktail associated with each creative.
I am eager to serve the Henri Matisse next time I entertain!
If you, the reader, love colorful illustrations, alcohol, and/or art, this little treasure will make you smile.
I LOVE this book! Artists & cocktails, cocktails as art, I can't think of a better combination! A brilliantly boozy homage to the world's greatest art festival, without the crowds. This lavishly illustrated compendium of cocktails is chock-full of brief bios of trail-blazing artists - past and present day - each perfectly paired with an inventive libation. This book will be high on my gift-giving list this holiday season!
This is probably one of the coolest cookbook/ cocktail books I’ve ever seen! It’s a book you could easily find on one’s coffee table it’s so beautiful. Each artist has their own cocktail created in their image? The cocktails themselves are quite obscure and I wonder how some of the combinations would actually work out. The artwork and descriptions are very entertaining. This one shouldn’t be missed!
I have to say, this is the first time for me to read a Cocktail recipe Book. It was very neat how Jennifer Croll had history for every drink and who it represented. We did try a few recipes from the book and our favorite one was James Turrell. It was really fun to make the blueberries ice cubes. We did wish that there was more recipes for Bourbon and maybe even some western legends. Overall a nice read but wont be trying out all the recipes. Thank you NetGalley for this advance read.
So fun! I am obsessed with interesting cookbooks and recipe books and when I saw this artists and cocktails book I knew I needed a peep at it. I will definitely be trying out a few of these cocktail recipes for special occasions and the illustrations are so vibrant! I will want to add this one to my collection. It’s a fun book to add character to your coffee table, or cookbook shelf!
This is a fun drink recipe book full of original drink ideas paying tribute to artists around the world. A lot of these recipes are, shall I say "quirky", just like the artists they portray, such as a dehydrated tomato for garnish. ART BOOZEL would be a lot of fun for someone who enjoys making cocktails, even better if they're an art fan.
Art Boozel: Cocktails Inspired by Modern and Contemporary Artists by Jennifer Croll and beautifully illustrated by Kelly Shami is such an amazing cocktail book. The cover is gorgeous! The drinks are so much fun. I can’t wait to try the Andy and the Frida! What a great gift for a cocktail lover! #ArtBoozel #NetGalley
A fabulous and fun coffee table book featuring snazzy art, wonderful artist facts and some really clever cocktails. I think I'll start with a Mondrian and maybe follow it up with an Ono.
This is such a great cocktail recipe book! The formatting is really fun, the drink recipes all sound delicious, and the illustrations are wonderful! Thank you net galley, for the advance copy. I love this one!
Each artist has a drink and an illustration. The artists highlighted are a nice mix of men, women, and poc, from Picasso to Yayoi Kusama to Jean-Michel Basquiat and many more.
