THE DETECTIVE Michael Angel is over fifty, married to Mary. They don’t have any children. They are a devoted couple but the relationship sometimes breaks down due to his job or due to the problems of Mary’s sister who lives in Edinburgh and imposes on their easygoing natures. Michael works at the small local police station and is devoted to defeating crime, murder, and dishonesty of any sort and has no personal ambition beyond being a good husband and a successful detective. He doesn’t want promotion with all the routine office work and stress that goes with it. He is incorruptible but always short of money. He is always at odds with his immediate chief, Detective Superintendent Horace Harker, who is lazy, a hypochondriac and not a bit interested in assisting Angel in serious police work.

The Yorkshire author writes crime stories about Detective Inspector Michael Angel who lives a fairly happy existence with his wife Mary in the town of Bromersley in South Yorkshire.
It is always a pleasure to be transported to Det Angel's world. These books are not flawless, they are not great literature, but for what I want/need they are spot on: stories that do not insult my intelligence but are not so complicated I can't follow the plot, characters that are interesting, and details of crimes that don't give me nightmares. I am looking for escape, for enjoyment and for some level of surprise. These always deliver. And even though I could do without some of the one dimensional characters (e.g. Harker) all in all I revel in the time I spend with this group.
This is the best series in a long time! Angel, whose methods are amazing always gets his man! They are all fun to read, made even more so by the clever twists and hints along the way. Add to that his relationship with co-workers and his much loved wife and you have a wonderful group of books....only downer is I wish the author could write more quickly!! Don't miss this series!
It's astonishing. The whole bedroom episode with the two intruders was nothing short of farcical. There was no explanation of the set-up to entrap the killers either before or after the scene. Surely, this piece of writing ranks among the most ludicrous in the whole series or anywhere else in murder-mystery offerings. A real letdown!
I think I'm on number 23 of his Inspector Angel series and I just keep reading and enjoying. These are not blood and guts tales or so convoluted as to leave one feeling garlic and Holy Water will be needed at some point. I rate all 23 as 5 stars.
I chose a 5 star rating because I love his witty writing, and how he solves his crimes. He lets you feel what the character feels and looks like. I am hoping he continues to write more.
The Detective Angel books are among my favorites. I love the characters. The stories always keep you guessing. I hope there are many more to come! I highly recommend this series.
This is one of my favourite authors and policeman, as per usual Angel has a great time working it out but always does , he also missed his wife who had come up to Scotland. I just love these stories.
Another great story in the Inspector Angel series. Roger Silverwood has a truly remarkable ability to create the storylines that he does and to make this a wonderful series to read. Please keep them coming.
I chose 5 stars because had some difficulty Getting my finger to land on the 4. Enjoy Angel and how he goes about treating his Staff, his boss is a bit unbelieveable and wonder why the author created such a person, Enjoyed the yarn.
My wait for book 23 was less than a month, and it was worthy of the short wait. The biggest plus is the character Superintendent Harker was heard from until almost midway through the book 😀. Sadly he did eventually make an appearance ☹️, but his overall presence was much less. Which made 'Angel and the Actress' a solid, entertaining read. 👍
I won't rehash the plot since it is on Amazon and Goodreads 🥱, but Angel as expected ties it all up at the end.
Only bummer for me is Mrs. Buller-Price still hasn't reappeared 🤷♂️, maybe Roger will read my review and sneak her back in for book 24 🤓. But I'm certain my wait for #24 will be longer than my wait for #23 😠.
It has myriad flaws, ranging from its unfortunately lacklustre plot to the truly bewildering domestic scenes, culminating in a convoluted climax and an ending which quite frankly didn't seem like an ending at all, and more like an interrupted chapter frozen mid-sentence. I can't tell if this is one book in a series or not, or where, perchance, the author is taking this series. Much like many of the characters in Angel and the Actress, I will 'breathe noisily' through my nose to express my irritation in a book with such promise and so little follow-through.
