Rate this book
‘…a unique book, written by a unique GP. There is no-one better placed to pull together decades of learning and experience on how to achieve the greatest success in the general practice consultation. The relaxed pace of writing, the accessible examples, the clear narrative and the engaging anecdotes make this a resource that it is accessible and useful to all who seek to improve their clinical consulting skills.’

Helen Stokes-Lampard, former Chair of the Royal College of General Practitioners

This brand-new book aims to help GPs establish ways of thinking, talking and behaving in the consultation that are most likely to lead to good outcomes. It describes a simple three-part approach to the consultation’s essential task, which is to convert a patient’s problem into a plan acceptable to both patient and doctor. It combines reader-friendly explanations, helpful illustrations and examples from everyday practice.

Although it is written ostensibly for GP specialist trainees, 'Consulting In A Nutshell' will be invaluable for any doctor who talks to patients (which is almost all of us). If Roger Neighbour's previous book 'The Inner Physician' appeals to the inner intellectual, then this one is for the inner pragmatist; from the get go we are offered clear and concise advice regarding consulting techniques that usually work and those that usually don't, alongside a consulting structure that facilitates, rather than reduces, the space for expression of our own personal styles. The book refers to the GP CSA exam, but it will nevertheless be useful for communicating in other post-graduate examinations such as MRCP PACES or the MRCS Part B OSCE. Those of us working in hospitals can learn from 'GP-land' in the vital area of consulting skills, and Consulting in a Nutshell reads and feels like your own personal tutorial. When it comes to consulting, there is no better teacher than Roger Neighbour.
