There are some really great and profound moments in this book. I was moved deeply at times as I worked through the prayer, scripture, and reflections. I do, however have a serious concern about the parallels Toups draws between sin and addiction. It’s a dangerous line he tiptoes in comparing the two. As a Catholic psychotherapist and trauma specialist, I take issue with tying the clinical to the moral. I see what he’s trying to do, but it could be harmful to someone in recovery. I also struggle with the fire and brimstone feel of some of his reflections. At times they read as almost threatening, condemning, or shaming. The imaginative reflections in the Holy Week devotions were very much the opposite though, conveying mercy, tenderness, and love.
Overall, I found this book useful and meaningful, though inconsistently.
I liked how this book was also accompanied by Fr. Mark Toups’ Lenten videos. I was able to be in the scenes in the scriptures this Lent and be with Jesus and Mary. This book helped me to focus on Jesus over Lent and be transformed. It made Holy Week like no other week, setapart!✨Christ is Risen! 🕊
Fr Mark Toups is so gifted at leading you through meditations. He always takes you a step deeper than you think you can go, but in such a loving compassionate way. All of his meditation studies are simply beautiful
This was a great book to read to prepare for the battle against Satan. He has lost all power to enslave us. We need to arm ourselves to join back to Jesus.
This book was a excellent for Lent. The tasks recommended by the book were truly challenging. I had two concerns about the book. The author makes reference to Hernan Cortes, which might be upsetting to some readers. Also in one section the author says “apostle” instead of “disciple”. This made it slightly more difficult for me to imagine myself in the scene as a woman. I discussed this book with a group of women each week and we watched the online videos together.
This book was a very insightful companion for me during lent, it made Holy Week even more meaningful and profound for me. It really assisted me throughout my Lenten journey 🙏🏽❤
