If you like fast-paced, action-packed Urban Fantasy novels with dynamic characters, intense action, and breathtaking suspense, then you'll love this edge-of-your-seat series, with a touch of Slavic mythology. Get your copy now!
N.M. Thorn currently lives in South Florida with her husband and son. Owner of a digital marketing agency by day and a writer by night, she loves spending her times creating new worlds, paranormal planes of existence and anything that could be described as supernatural.
When she is not busy working with everything digital or exploring fantasy worlds, she enjoys spending time with her family, reading, painting and martial arts.
I'm convinced N. M. Thorn can't write a bad book. This the first installment in her new series and on no level did it disappoint. The characters are relatable, complex and with real depth of emotion. World building is superb (even in its urban setting) and you can see, smell and hear everything the characters do. The story is fast moving and entertaining and will grab you tight and not let go till you've read the last word. As always, myths and legends are woven in – especially slavic folklore – which gives the story an even greater depth, and piques your interest in the old tales. The way they create the foundation to the stories is perfectly crafted and makes you want to believe there are all these supernatural beings walking among us. Okay, so maybe not vampires. Because who wants to be bitten by one of them? But the other ones would be fine. Especially if you have Damian Blake, Shadow Hunter, nearby. Damian is our main character in this book who hunts down supernaturals preying on humans. He travels alone and works alone, but is asked make an exception. Taking on a job as a handyman and to help protect a newly widowed woman, he finds himself drawn into a supernatural mystery that could have dire consequences for humans and non-human alike if it's not solved in time. Fighting a battle on more than one front, Damian finds help from surprising allies and long lost loved ones. Add to the mix a talking cat with attitude and you have the perfect blend for a fantastic read that will keep you thoroughly entertained for several hours. If you haven't tried Thorn's books before, I highly recommend you start now. You won't regret it.
What a great start to this new series! N. M. Thorn’s latest book is the perfect addition to her fantasy world. We were introduced to the main character — Damian Blake — at the end of Thorn’s previous series, but reading it is not necessary for this book. Although, I highly recommend reading The Fire Salamander Chronicles anyway, as it’s a fantastic read.
Damian Blake hunts and kills any supernatural beings that hurt humans. He travels alone and works alone. Until he doesn’t. Reluctantly accepting a job as handyman and protector to an older man’s daughter, he’s about to discover much more than he bargained for.
As always, Thorn’s characters take on a life of their own and positively leap off the pages. She lures you in, wraps you up in her web, and all you can do is follow the strings to where she leads you — straight into an adventure with myths, magical realms and supernatural beings. She’ll have you believe there are gods and goddesses walking among us, causing mayhem and mischief, and watch out, the person standing next to you in the hardware store might just be capable of much more than you could ever dream of.
The world building is spot on, the characters are complex and entertaining, and the plot is flawless. You won’t regret picking this book up. Curl up on the couch, ignore your surroundings and immerse yourself in Damian’s world. And for goodness sake, someone let that cat out!
As a massive fan of The Firesalamander Chronicles, I was excited when N.M. Thorn announced a new series in this world, and boy... it did NOT disappoint. It felt like coming home despite the new cast of characters we are introduced to. It's like that warm blanket on a cold winter day.
At the end of the last FSC book, we are introduced to Damian, but it's not necessary to read that series (although I would suggest that you do).
Damian Blake, ever the reluctant hero, carries a massive secret with him; his story will keep you guessing all the way to the end, and I for one cannot wait to read more! Trouble seems to follow him wherever he goes, but anyone knowing Thorn's world knows that everything happens for a reason.
Thorn's done a marvellous job on the Shadow Enforcer. As ever, it's a fast-paced, edge-of-your-seat kind of story; just like we've come to expect from Thorn. If you loved FSC, or if you love Urban Fantasy with that wonderful magical twist and deep seated Folklore, the Shadow Enforcer is for you.
The best of all? The not so wandering Gypsy. You'll see.
Lots of Slavic mythology in this one. I have always loved mythology, but the only Slavic mythos I have had the pleasure of reading has been part of the Kate Daniels series, which has all the mythology.
Damien Blake (most fantasy name ever!) is No One. He travels around dispatching any monsters who harm humans. Most of the human world is unaware of magic, so he has to do it quietly. When we meet him there are hints as to his past where he had a lot more power. Now he can't even heal himself. While hitchhiking, he is picked up by Sam, a retired hunter like Damien. Sam asks him to help with a problem at his daughter, River's, home, a mansion with a dark past.
Damien arrives and meets River, finds some seriously creepy stuff going on. River's husband was killed and there is a whole mystery surrounding his death.
This book is action-packed from word one. It's a longer book, but it moves so fast it's hard to put down. Luckily, I'm on winter break right now! It also sets up a series I would love to read. I have also heard good things about this author's Fire Salamander series.
N.M. Thorn’s The Shadow Enforcer is the first entry in a spin-off of her Fire Salamander series. While this story is set in the same universe, it can be read without previous knowledge of the urban fantasy series which inspired it.
Shadow trades out Thorn’s previous cast for a brand new one led by the enigmatic wanderer Damien — whose arrival in a small Arizona town sets off a mystery of its own revolving around an old manor.
That’s as much as I’ll say regarding the central plot. But the cast (including one of my favorite-ever secondary characters from Thorn — also leaving a surprise) is solid, and the story is great. Because the universe in which Damien’s story unfolds is well-established by the previous series, Shadow blows right out of the gate into a supernatural adventure that will make you want to return to the previous series, if you haven’t read them already.
Vampires, demons, rural America and gods combine to make this an adventure you will not want to miss.
I totally recommend reading this book and embrace yourself because is going to be a bumpy ride packed with action and suspense! I'm very much looking forward to book two
I am head over heels for The Shadow Enforcer by N.M. Thorn. This action-packed Urban Fantasy had me hooked from the first line of its epic prologue. And the story only gets better from there!
It has everything you want in an Urban Fantasy: A world-weary hero who’s shackled to a destiny for which he longs to break free, a perilous job that only he’s equipped to handle, and a centuries-old mystery that could destroy him.
Riveted by every word narrated through my headphones, I blasted through this audiobook. Props to the mad skills of Steven Barnett and his dynamic portrayal of Thorn’s Damian Blake.
I can’t wait to read book 2 The Shadow Deception.
And since there are 9 books in the series, I’ve got lots of reading enjoyment ahead!
Damian Blake is no one. Literally ‘no one’. But it doesn’t take long for the reader to learn that Damian Blake is an immortal Child of Earth and a badass fighter with some dangerous skills. In other words, he is a complicated man with a shadowy past that he has absolutely no interest in discussing with anyone for any reason.
We meet Damian as he is walking and hitchhiking his way from Florida to Arizona to start a new life in a new place and find some peace and quiet. But it is on that journey that he meets Sam — a grizzled old Hunter in his own right — and gets tangled up into something far larger and more dangerous than he could have imagined to be possible.
Set in the same literary universe as N.M. Thorn’s first Urban Fantasy series, The Fire Salamander Chronicles, this book is a stunning start to what promises to be another amazing series!
Thorn has a unique talent in making her immortal heroes out be vulnerable and flawed even as they take on seemingly unstoppable foes. She weaves her tales of magic and mayhem into a stunning tapestries that you just want to sink into and be a part of. Her books are page-turners that you never want to put down.
She also has an impeccable talent at weaving in elements of many different pantheons, but her particular love for the Slavic pantheon — one that is largely ignored by most writers in favor of the Greeks, Romans, Celtic, and Norse.
If you haven’t already picked up your own copy of The Shadow Enforcer or any of the six books of the Fire Salamander Chronicles, you are truly missing out! I cannot recommend this book enough!
Note: I was an ARC reader of this book, but I loved it so much I bought a Kindle copy after it was released!
I’m not sure how I found this book but I’m glad I did. This starts out in 996AD, when an area of Russia is being invaded. Dimitri watches as his brother, Nikolai, is overpowered and killed by vampires. He then dies himself but because he is connected to the Elemental of Earth, he is actually immortal. Fast forward to present day, Dimitri, now known as Damian Blake, is now a shadow hunter, killing vampires and other supernaturals who prey on humans. He gets hired by Sam to protect Sam’s daughter, Raven, as there are strange, possibly supernatural happenings in her house. Shortly after arriving, Damian is framed for murder but at the same time, rescues his brother, now a vampire. There is a lot of history to cover while they reconnect. Joining together to find out what is happening, this book has a lot happening. There is action, surprises, suspense, supernatural politics, magic and more. Not a lot of humour except for Raven’s cat, Gypsey, who only Damian can here. She is a very snarky cat. This is not a light book; there are definitely darker aspects to it but it is not a difficult read. I do have one complaint, when Damian casts a spell, he uses words like incanto collium, which makes me think of Harry Potter, but there is no actual similarity. I really enjoyed this and am on to the next one.
Damian Blake is a drifter with a past. He enters Arizona looking for a fresh start but soon gets pulled into a world of magic he wishes to avoid. He has powers connected to Earth magic, but that power has been crippled, leaving him a shadow of his former self. Events force him to make a choice that will change his life forever.
There is a lot to like about this new series. Damian is an interesting and mysterious character that will have you turning the page to find out more about his past. The supporting characters add nicely to the story. I especially loved Gypsy, the sarcastic cat. The pacing and plot are spot on.
The only minor flaw I had with the book, was that Damian at the end of the story takes down a very powerful entity (I won’t go deeper to avoid spoilers). This always makes me nervous that the series is going to jump the shark; if you start a series taking down some that powerful, where does it go from here?
Despite my worries about where the series might go, I look forward to reading the next book in the series when it is released.
I enjoyed this first instalment of the Shadow Enforcer. It was a slow burn read at the beginning but did manage to hook me in so that I found I had to keep reading till the midnight hours to finish the book off. I couldn’t wait till the next day to finish it off, so that says something. Only the 4 rating as it took a while to get into the story and into the characters. Could have been a little bit better at building stronger, more interesting characters backgrounds to make you want to know them more, Sam just disappeared for a father who hires someone to help with some house and yard work, and then no follow through. And on some of the characters just touching on their basic background and no personalities to build with so all of them were very grey no pop, standing out as characters in the book they come and go but they just leave you feeling like you don’t know them. I will read the next in the series to see how this plays out, see if the characters do grow and we get to know them more.
This the first book in : The Shadow Enforcer Book Series
This is a great start of a new series from this Author what makes it even better is that this takes place at the same time as Zane's . This series is more like a spin -off to the Salamander series because we will see some of the same characters in this series . The storyline is great I love the brothers as always the world building is awesome . The only problem I have with most Author's including this one is how they just have to throw in a LOVE interest that's mainly useless Tessa = The two new women that I could have done without . Anywho looking forward to the next book in this series oh and another thing that had me stumped was that Zane didn't make an appearance . I know that this is a new series with a new cast of characters but Zane is the guardian of the human world. You would think that someone would have informed him that two dark God's was about to cause an apocalypse just saying .
I have been an avid reader of NM Thorn's work since she first published it and was sad to see her original series come to end. Ms. Thorn if you're reading - hope to see a new Gunz book in the future :) or a cameo appearance.
When I received the news that she was starting a new series I was both excited and scared. Excited to see what she creating and sad to see Mishka go.
Sometimes sequel series lacks the punch of the original one has but not the case for NM Thorn. In reading Shadow Enforcer, Ms. Thorn expands on the magical universe she created in the Burns Fire with the wonderfully complicated Damian Blake.
Darker than Gunz with a millennium of experience, Damian is the epitome of dedication in his fight to rid dark forces from the world. He is his own man and no one or thing will stop his mission.
Damian Blake has lived a very long life. He was once a member of a secret agency that makes sure that members of the magical community remain a secret from humans. His move to s small town in Arizona will not be the chance to live peacefully when he discovers a terrifying secret that could rip apart not only just the human realm, but possibly all realms. Wonderful, and well written characters. Exciting, fast paced action, magic, and fascinating twists in the plot. Fantastic book!
First book I have read by this author. It’s rare I finish a book these days so 5 stars for a book I was interested in to read all the way! I like the writing. Descriptive but with a good pace. That’s not easy to do. Characters were interesting and real. Not easy to do. Not a completely light read and not at all depressing. Just right. Not easy to do. I’m impressed with the intelligence it took to make a book that hits the sweet spot of this genre and tone. Will read more by this author.
So, yes, it was a good detective story and the the setting in a world of magic (and mayhem) just added to the story. The characters were engaging and the pace was really good (I admit I finished the book in a day - a very long day, but with a good book, who cares!
It turns out I'm rereading the 1st couple books in this series. I'm getting much more out of it, probably after reading Air and Fire. Quibble: once again the protagonist and another male make a strong connection that seems romantic only for it to go nowhere. Odd.
A new great book from N. M. Thorn, new adventures continue in the Salamander Chronicle universe. I am really glad the story continues with new characters, new supernaturals, with incredibly imaginative turns and twists.
These adventure are so exciting. Magic, creature, demones. mystery and war. Everything I love in a book. I am never bored when I read these! You will love it!
I liked the story so far..will see how it develops. Biggest issue I have is the use of the word smirk. Used over 104 times in one book. (Yep, I counted) That's a lot and looses impact as well as being distracting to read
Although the situations and dialogues, and even some of the characters seemed a little forced and others seemed “cliché” the book as a whole was entertaining. Let’s see what the author can pull out for the next books in the series.
Damian Blake is an earth child he has earth magic. He hitches a lift and ends up in a little town where he meets other supernatural creatures. Vampires and Werewolves. There is plenty of action. I really enjoyed reading this book.
Excellent! A new type of superhero who has to battle mad gods. The story is written in such a way as to keep rooted to your reading and not want to put it down. I an looking forward to reading the next episode.
The characters are very real inspite of the battles and fierce challenges they face. The plot is complex and be careful reading to be clear about the forces of good and evil. An excellent adventure!
