If only they hadn't met!

Sean Cartier disliked the press generally and he had special reason, he thought, to dislike reporter Sarah Helm. His cousin Don had died after Sarah had broken their engagement.

And if Sarah had known that Sean was Don's cousin she would never have taken the assignment to cover the oil strike at the Australian field where Sean Cartier was in charge. Sean's acts of revenge--keeping her off the story, holding her captive--infuriated Sarah. Yet underneath there was a strange attraction between them....

This is for alpha-hole lovers only. Our reporter heroine had the bad luck to be engaged to the hero's womanizing cousin when she was 18. When she discovered his baby and baby mama while reporting on another story, she broke the engagement. The cousins car went off of a cliff a week later - and the hero blames her.

Hero is in charge of oil exploration in the Northwest part of Australia. Heroine is at the camp to report on any oil strike they may find. This all sounds like government work, rather than a private enterprise with all the security and need for the right kind of publicity, but I could be wrong.

Anyway, when the hero finds out that the pretty reporter is responsible for his cousin's suicide, he refuses to allow her to interview anyone and relegates her to working in the canteen. To make matters worse, he makes sure she finds out some top-secret info so that it would be a crime if she left the compound before the oil strike results are made public. This endangers both her job and keeping her flat in Sydney.

Normally, I like the falsely accused heroine with some physical labor and Stockholm syndrome thrown in, but this had too many legalistic details to justify the hero's actions that it shattered the fantasy. The heroine was intelligent and was constantly plotting her escape, but most of her speculating came to naught - and quickly. She got shot down over and over again and it got boring. She actually spent as much time with the canteen supervisor and then the Chinese servant at the hero's station later on in the story than she does with the hero. So the romance/attraction part seemed very thin.

That the hero was tied up in knots about the heroine with her two changes of clothes and her natural beauty, I don't doubt. But why the heroine thinks she's in love with a hero she barely sees is beyond me.

This is certainly a story you'll remember - but probably not too fondly.

A romance book where I recall no romance just manual labor. The ML"s mode of revenge is to make FL do manual labor and his secretarial work. Their proper interactions are I guess just 5 times and the rest of the story and their chemistry which I don't even know can be called is so forgettable.

Heroine was once engaged to Hero's cousin. While following leads on a story about a funeral, she finds out the woman she is interviewing is actually her fiance's mistress and has a 4 yr old child by him, and that he still visits her and engages in sexual relations. Although he didn't provide well for them as they basically lived in a slum and was very poor. Shattered and disillusioned with the man she thought she was in love with, that night they have a screaming row and she throws the ring back in his face. He taunts her claiming she'll come crawling back to him in the next week and the next day he ends up driving his car off a cliff where he and the heroine would park and discuss their future. After being consumed by guilt for so long, her friends rally around her pointing out he was a womanizer and too lustily enjoyed life to commit suicide and it had to have been an accident as the location of the accident was also on a curved road.

The story begins in the thick of an argument between the Heroine and the Hero at the mining site where she is a star reporter for her newspaper and he's just found out who she is. He believes she knew who he was the entire time and was leading him on using her beauty as a lure to get an advantage and scoop on the story as well as making a fool of him. He is also angry and sure he knows the score. When engaged to the Hero's cousin, he never discussed his family at all with the Heroine and she literally had no idea. Someone in the press corps on site had informed the Hero that she was the one who caused his cousin to commit suicide, hence the Hero's want for revenge. He takes her off the press list (he's the Big Man on Mining Campus so ya know he can do this!) and makes her work in the kitchen to earn her keep after informing her editor he's pulling her off because his 'future wife' will not be a working woman. Then after a few days of that, decides she'll be his assistant and keeps her basically relegated to her room unless she's having dinner with him. He thinks she's a slut due to the story he was given so he keeps her away from the men at the camp and tells her some information the rest of the press didn't get which is Top Secret (of course), claiming he has the right to hold her captive because with that information she's now a security risk.

Eventually she escapes, he catches her and takes her to his home and again puts her into the worst room of the house (what she had at the camp was much more luxurious!). She charms the Manservant, has an accident and hurts her shoulder ... meets his neighbor who is beautiful and has her heart set on the Hero but is a non starter and only makes the one visit. His sister shows up and recognizes the Heroine, mentioning to Hero she wasnt shocked of the broken engagement because of how the cousin really was which the Hero wasnt aware of and didn't believe because he remembers him from childhood - but not as an adult. The story is finally released of the 'Top Secret Find' and the Heroine is credited with the story due to the Hero's handiwork with her editor. She goes back to her home in Syndey, finds out she no longer has a job. Hero shows up and let the chase begin for a few pages. Then the HEA! All without even discussing the misunderstandings!!

There are times when I want to queue a Mariachi song and dance in circles singing "Na na na na na na na" while repeatedly banging myself over the head with a gourd or perhaps even a set of good hard castanets and this was definitely one of those times.

I can only assume that the heroine (23) was bewitched by the hero's (30s) masculinity. From the very beginning of the story he is raging and unjust and treats her in a highhanded manner. He makes no move, after the first three days of their acquaintance (which are before the book starts), to be accommodating or to woo her. His conceit is astounding.
I give it 3 stars as I wanted to know how it would end, but I imagine her one day waking up and realising that she is being held captive and being unable to escape him.

I love Jane Corrie but this book is disgusting.

The man kidnaps the girl, humilates and abuses her, then tells her she must bear his children because he says so.
Odious man!
And she agrees?

One of the examples of the bewitched man in love - he forces her to dance, she says she's no good at it, he doesn't listen and then this gem:

'You're being deliberately dense!' he snapped angrily. 'Wherever your brains are, they certainly don't reach your feet. It's so damn simple a child could do it!'

A man in love you say?
