A TALE OF TWO TIMELINES! Reeling from the events of X OF SWORDS, Cable turns back to the matter of missing mutant babies… a matter he knows a thing or two about.
I bambini mutanti rapiti dall'Ordine.
Oh yeah, that's what we were doing before X Of Swords so rudely interrupted us...looking for kidnapped babies!
And, thanks to Rachel Summers, we actually find them! Well, half of them. As in, we find five of the ten missing babies...not that we find ten halves of babies...that would be gross. Why would you even think that might be thing? You disgust me...
Anyway, it's great to see the Summers family being a family, I don't recall Nate and Rachel ever really spending any time together, just the two of them, before. Plus we get some great "Cyclops being a dad" stuff here. And "Dad Cyclops" is probably the best Cyclops.
Plus, we finally find out who's behind the baby kidnapping, and let's just say that they're keeping it in the family...
The only thing missing from this issue is more outrageous flirting with the Cuckoos, but it's still pretty great with some gorgeous Phil Noto art.
- Rachel Summers looks so gooooood! I'd love to see more of her by Duggan and Noto.
- Since X of Swords I've started liking Cable a lot more. This redemption arc is doing great for his character development too. It's wonderful to see him working with Rachel. The Summers siblings should definitely team up more often in future – that includes Hope!
- Yesssssss to seeing Domino in future issues!!
- Lots of funny moments balanced with the right amount of foreshadowing.
This was one of the most Rachel-heavy comics in years, which I like. Even in X-Factor, where she is ostensibly one of the main characters, she doesn't usually get as much dialogue as she got in this issue. That's great.
What's not so great is that I don't think the writer really "gets" Cable. Lately comics have bounced around with ideas about what this version's personality should be like. Some suggest he is dumber than the older version of himself, some suggest that he is too impulsive. I don't really understand why these are suggestions at all, unless there is some editorial mandate that this version of Cable has to be different from the other one. Usually, Cable is methodical, experienced, competent, etc.
Also, what a strange thing for Cable to say, that Stryfe was the clone of the other version of him. Stryfe was cloned from Cable as a baby, shortly after he arrived in the future and was freshly infected with the T-O virus. Because Apocalypse was worried Cable wouldn't survive the infection. So Stryfe is just as much a clone of this Cable as the other Cable.
Back to saving mutant babies! You'd think they would have sent one of the of mutants that weren't involved in the Otherworld tournament but then we wouldn't have this Stryfe storyline. Funny, i was just thinking about Stryfe the other day, he was featured pretty heavily in the 90's era trading cards and one of my kids bought me some Chef Boyardee promo cards where he is one of the mystery villains. Anyways... This issue really stands out from its predecessors for me. It's a nice blend of action and story building. I think bringing in a classic "old Cable" villain is a good move. Or at least more interesting than Cable dates the Cuckoos. And the Domino/kid Cable team-up should be fun. I'd been considering canceling my subscription of this book but I think I'll give it a few more issues because this was really good.
Good clean art by Phil Noto. I enjoyed the sequence where they saved the babies, even if I was a little lost on the why of things happening. Mostly just because it'd been so long since I've read the previous arc. The teasing of bringing in Domino at the end was cool!
