Kendra Bright thought she was safe from her past, that is until she becomes the target of a serial killer whose objective is more than simple murder. In order to survive, she must return to her hometown of Polaris, an astrology-themed resort island, where she realizes the killer’s revenge is also her own.Polarity is a suspense speculative fiction novel, sure to enthrall readers who loved Ted Dekker's Skin and Tosca Lee's The Line Between series, as it explores themes of revenge, emotional abuse, and confronting past trauma.
Stories teach the heart to believe, and Erin tries to fill every second with stories, whether it’s an audiobook while on the go, a movie with her hubs, or just snuggling up with a good book. She is not afraid of a dark story, for the Light is often the most brilliant in the dead of night. Erin graduated from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts with a B.F.A. in Costume Design & Technology, and lives in North Carolina with her husband, Jeremy, and their happy corgis, Parker and Fable.
NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR: This book is not only a piece of my heart, but a part of my story. For anyone else who has endured emotional (narcissistic) abuse, my heart goes out to you ❤️ Though I don’t make any faith statements in this story, I pray you remember that your value is fixed by Jesus’ loving sacrifice for you at the Cross.
This was a page-turner! It kept me engaged and intrigued to the very end. I enjoyed the unique world of Polaris, the creepy villain, and walking with Kendra through her struggles and growth. A fantastic story!
When I first discovered Erin wrote a suspense thriller, I was...intrigued, to say the least. I have read some (working on all) of Erin's other works, all Fantasy, and LOVE them each so very much. She is a brilliant fantasy writer/storyteller, so I was rather curious what she had to offer in the suspense category.
Now that I've finished, can I just say, WOW! She met and exceeded all of my expectations, and with a debut suspense/thriller no less. This story was so well thought out, and engaging all the way through. I was literally kept on the edge of my seat with every single page. And her incorporation of Astrology was fascinating. She was even able to sprinkle in a bit of a romantic sub-plot within, which I was totally there for. I also loved that she left little breadcrumbs for the reader, to speculate who was behind certain events within, but without being too obvious as to give it away. But what I loved even more is that even with the breadcrumbs, she threw in some curve balls that I certainly didn't see coming.
The family aspect within was tragic, but wonderfully written. With a message that one can never truly outrun their past, and that in attempting to do so, it can only lead to more pain, sadness and bitterness. This was something that I think all readers can resonate with. Not something you typically see in a suspense novel, but a signature of the author, which I loved. Erin also touches on grief, forgiveness and hope, and how overcoming tragedy, rather than seeking revenge, can heal ones heart and soul.
If you are looking for an edge of your seat thriller, that's more than just an adrenaline ride, then this story is certainly for you.
What a page-turner! Erin Phillips writes such a powerful, gripping thriller. This story grabs you tightly from the start and never lets go, even after you read the final word.
I did my very best not to cry at the last three chapters (as I can relate to some of what occurred in the final chapter) while I was reading this in public. My jaw dropped several times as tears watered in my eyes. The last few twists are unexpected and well-written.
Erin is amazing at crafting a cold villain like Selene Wyverstone. Selene is so cold and sociopathic that you can’t help but react in fear whenever she appears and speaks. You can practically feel the coldness radiating from her as Kendra interacts with her throughout the story.
Honestly, while it did grab my attention and keep it, the first 2 books were even better. Erin’s first two books were not only entertaining but seemed a moral character development that was deeper than this - and not only at the very end but through the story. Erin has an amazing imagination and storytelling ability! I can’t wait for more of her work and hope to read it soon :)
You can definitely tell that this is one of Phillip's earlier works. The premise of the cult is fascinating and I did enjoy it, but the narrative is a bit uneven and the ending feels rushed and, honestly, a little confusing and anticlimactic. I would love to read a revised version of this now, though I'm sure Phillips would prefer to move forward to other, newer projects. A quick read, but not a particularly strong story.
As always Erin Phillips knows how to cut into one’s heart.
This is the first Thriller I have ever read and I am glad I chose to read this book.
The epilogue hit a nerve for me because through all the bad in the book and my own personal life, I feel like I’m not alone, like someone sees me and understands.
I had a similar experience with Erin Phillips other book “A Bond of Briars” that is a biblical retelling of Ruth.
I enjoyed the characters and storyline, but found the errors in editing distracting.
If there hasn't been a reprint, I would suggest one with proper editing outside of "spelling and grammer check" within a program like Word, and also adding some sort of asterisk or line break when there is a scene or POV change. Just my 2 cents.
Although this is not one of Erin’s talked about novels, it is still marvelous. It kept me on the edge of my seat, and though I had some thoughts on what was going to happen next, I was enthralled by the details and the delivery. Walking through the story of Kendra’s trauma was reminiscent and revealing. Even though it is not in the spotlight, this is a thrilling adventure that should not be forgotten!!
