the junkyard of literature is vast; susceptible souls may easily go astray.polish poet & nobel laureate wisława szymborska's how to start writing (and when to stop) (poczta literacka, czyli jak zostać (lub nie zostać) pisarzem) is a masterclass in tough love for wannabe writers. culled from the "literary mailbox" column (which she co-authored anonymously) of polish journal literary life, szymborska's replies to advice-seeking epistolary inquiries are a ton of fun, if a little snarky at times. szymborska suffers no fools, blows no smoke, and minces no words. more a showcase of the poet's wit and her writerly chops rather than a proper how-to guide, how to start writing (and when to stop), no doubt, disabused many aspiring writers of the idea that fame and fortune were but a few hastily dashed off stanzas or stories away.
to l.w., from przemyśl*translated from the polish by clare cavanagh (miłosz, zagajewski, krynicki, and several other szymborska collections)
no, the form of your story cum moral treatise doesn't shock us. we don't aim to save the purity of past literary genres. we view each piece as a separate entity governed by its own principles and generating its own potentials. we're not grieved that your vast commentary outweighs the feeble plot. but your naivete dismays us. you praise rural life in the bosom of nature, and find the root of all evil in knowledge, curiosity, and the impulse to better our lot. we wish you greater familiarity with nature's ways and, incidentally, better handwriting.
