How many different ways can I say, "No, no, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!"?
I need every last one of them. Brilliant story, even better narration, heartbreaking emotion on every page that there should be...
I actually am confused about something though. I thought I heard xyz happened with a note. I was LIVID. Why would Eve do that? Asking to get caught. Then... it's where it can't be. If I had a paperback, I'd go check it out but I don't. I may have to get this one on Kindle so I can do a search. #BecauseReasons. It's really confusing but the story was so good, and I assume I misheard something.
Then again... I may want to keep these on my shelves... get them for my husband... I'm not sure what it is about this series that I love most. How raw and real and flawed Rembrandt is? How seeing how each choice we make affects every other one? I can't tell, but what I can say is that most of each book is written in first -person/present tense. And I love 'em anyway.
BLOOD FROM A STONE is another thrilling ride in this series where a police detective travels to the past to solve cold cases and fix his future. Great characters and an engaging plot with several twists will keep readers glued to the pages. Definitely a series to grab for fans of cold-case detective stories who will enjoy a sci-fi twist!
Each of these books are such an intense, roller-coaster ride! In this installment Rem has gone back in time again to solve a cold case and change the future for two people. Of course he can't control nor remember everything, so there are plenty of twists that keep readers guessing what will happen and how it will all affect his life in the future. These characters become more lovable each book and you can't help but cheer Rem and Eve on as well as love seeing other characters. Rem is such a strong character and the authors do a great job in how this series is written for readers to feel all of his emotions as well as Eve's. You're completely immersed in the story and hanging on the edge of your seat. I literally could not put this book down. I figured out who the villain was in the last book and was dying for these two to figure things out too. Still not sure of all the consequences from Rem's choices and what will happen in the final book, but I can't wait!
In the end, was it what I wished for? A thrilling ride of detective work with a time-travel twist. Readers will fall in love with these characters over the course of this series and hang on every choice as Rem tries to fix his future. Highly recommended!
Content: Some innuendo and violence. Source: I received a complimentary copy from the publisher through JustRead Tours, which did not require a positive review. All opinions are my own.
"Thankfully, fate and I have been in the ring together before...But what fate has forgotten is that I don't know what's good for me. And I'll keep swinging no matter how many times I get knocked flat."
Book 5 gives back to the readers the self-assured, almost reckless Rem we met at the beginning of the series who's armed with foreknowledge and a determination to make things right. But this Rem is a bit more aggressive and a lot more desperate because of the things he's been through. I've missed Rem's conversational storytelling and his honest, sarcastic, and raw fighting voice and spirit.
There is a lot that happens in this book and if you thought there were suspenseful plot twists and action in the previous books, you are in for a grand and delightful treat with this book. And faith thread is introduced here through Rem's father's wisdom and a little girl whom Rem meets through a cold case in the past. The ending is a cliff-hanger... it's not just the gasp-inducing, what-in-the-world-happened kind of a cliff-hanger like before but also one that gives a glimmer of hope in the new reality Rem finds himself. Can we fast-forward to November already for the last book?!
I received the book from the authors/publisher and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are solely my own.
Reread update: Still as fantastic as I remembered. Even better because I can jump to the last book right now.. Original review: Let me catch my breath. My reviews may seem a bit repetitive. Yet each installment has sent me on the rollercoaster of emotions and tension and suspense! Yes I love this series and I feel like the stakes are raised with each book in this series. The cliffhangers get more intense with each book, yet I am so invested with these characters that I eagerly wait for the moment I can get my hands on the next one. The suspense is there, the moments that pull the heartstrings and moments of humor that perfectly balance all the intense moments. It is the perfect balance of all things I love. This book sets up the series for what I anticipate to be a killer of a climax. I am trying not to spoil anything, because so much is at stake in this book that , I am just dying! Ahhhhhh! If you are looking for a series, full of twists, a great cast of characters and tight writing, I highly recommend this series. I recieved a complementary copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions in this review are honest and completely my own.
Here I sit at the end of another Rembrandt Stone installment, nerves shot, heart wrung out, and maybe a few grey hairs. Let’s get real here, I have no one to blame but myself. Hehe.
I was anxious walking into this one after how Susan left us at the end of Set In Stone, but quickly settled into Rem’s quest to return to or at least land in a version of his life he can live with. A version that includes Eve and their daughter.
So many twists and turns and “what is happening right now” moments — Blood From A Stone was incredible. I couldn’t be more excited to see how this unforgettable series wraps up.
Blood From a Stone was a nice continuation of the series, although I'm getting a little tired as it seems like the same things keep happening in all the books....(go back in time to try and fix things, make them worse, and repeat). This story was a little difficult for me to keep track of all the things and I was just not captivated by it.
I am curious how the series will end, so I will finish the last book and hope that I enjoy that one more.
All in all, I liked the book, just didn't love it.
Rem oh Rem! Book 5 brings back the Rem we know but there's a difference about him. A recklessness and abandonment that leaves him desperate for things to work out, to fix everything that has gone wrong, solve the cases that have been cold for so long and just have a happy life with Eve and his daughter. But it's not as easy as it seems and with the twists and turns and the nail biting and yes blood pressure raising experiences Rem seems to go through, this one takes the cap and we left desperately longing for the final book because honestly right now we just want everything to be okay. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. All opinions expressed are solely mine.
Every single time I meet up with Rembrandt Stone, I know I’m in for a twisting and wild ride. And Blood from a Stone by David James Warren is the most white-knuckled, knock you over one yet.
When we left Rembrandt last, he was desperate to get back to his past. To right the penultimate wrong in his present. But no matter how the man plans, no matter his determination to beat fate and change the outcome, he is swept back to his present with regrets. And none so much as at the end of this one. Y’all if you’ve been okay with the cliffhangers in the previous four books, this one is the exception!
With only one book left in the True Lies of Rembrandt Stone series, there is a lot to sort out. Will Rem get what he wants most back? Will he learn to be grateful for what he has now instead of regret what he doesn’t have? I, for one, will be right here on the edge of my seat until I find out.
Disclosure statement: I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book and was not required to write a positive review. All opinions are my own.
Our job in life, Rem is just to stand firm on what we believe in. Because we are only accountable to the men we are called to be.
Another great installment to this series. In this book, I felt Rem's inner conflict to try and fix what he changed, to save the lives of the people he loves and to protect those he was called to serve.
I loved the way the author keeps the reader in the dark along with Rem. This made this reader feel more connected to Rem and his struggles to do the right thing without changing more of his future. The author also threw in a few twists and turns not expected in this installment.
I love the honesty and vulnerability only the reader gets to see through this journey with Rem.
It's brutal to hear your own screams, the rending of your soul. Even in the padding of the rain, and night, I'm shaken through, and I'm unashamed of my grief.
Looking forward to the final book in this series. There is so much I want to be returned to Rem, and so much new things I don't want to change, and I have a feeling we won't be able to get everything we want!
*I received a complimentary copy from the author. All opinions expressed are my own.*
This book, this whole series, deserves so much more than five stars.
I have NEVER been as hooked on a series as I am on The True Lies of Rembrandt Stone. Holy. Cow. And just when I think it can't possibly get any better, that Rem's changes to his timeline can't get any worse...I read this book and the authors blow my mind once again.
The storytelling of this series is unlike any other. I absolutely love reading in Rem's voice. He's still as funny and charismatic as he was in book one but he's also grown so much! And all I want is a good ending for him!! I cannot wait for the final book to come out next month! I don't think I'm going to be able to last until then!
Seriously, everyone needs to read this series. It's painful, but it's absolutely incredible!
Boy this story was a rollercoaster and while it didn't contain too much action as the previous one, that ending made it all up for me.... boy stone really can't have a break and honestly am a bit scared of what the last book will hold and how it will end... cause seriously i can't see a happy ending no matter what.
Gee whiz! Rem just can't seem to win for losing! His time travel choices have disintegrated his life almost to the point of being irreparable. But at least now he's trying to make the right decisions in order to put his life, and those closest to him, back together in a positive way...
Blood From A Stone is the fifth book in the True Lies Of Rembrandt Stone and is one of the best. As I've said before, Time Travel is just not my genre but this series has really been an exception for me. The whole question of how important even our tiniest choices are, how they affect others, and just how responsible we are for what happens, is fascinating to explore through fiction. A lot of that existential stuff may be above my pay grade but it's been interesting to watch as Rem's character has changed and grown as he wrestles with those questions.
The combined talent that is David James Warren has really run their main character through the wringer thus far but the ante has been upped exponentially in this book. I kinda surprised myself at how fast I finished Blood From A Stone, I read it all in one day which is definitely quicker than the previous True Lies Of Rembrandt Stone. Maybe it had something to do with the bombshells that just kept dropping on poor Rem.
James Rubart, Susan May Warren, and David Curtis Warren were pretty gutsy to take on writing a story with a single main character but I can tell you that it's been a winning combination so far! And after the cliffhanger at the end of Blood From A Stone I can't wait to read the conclusion to the True Lies Of Rembrandt Stone...
(I received a copy of this book from the author/publisher. All opinions are entirely my own.)
I have loved every book in the Rembrandt Stone series so far and the fifth book, Blood From A Stone, was no exception. There were aspects of this book I didn’t enjoy as much as others, but that was only because certain situations weren’t working out the way I wanted them to. I wanted the parts of the main character’s life that were broken in other books to be fixed. Fixed I tell you!
I was hooked on this series from page one of the first book, Cast the First Stone. I fell fast in love with Rembrandt and his wife Eve and their daughter Ashley and all the supporting characters around them. My fast attachment is probably why I have read these books with a “fist in my gut” as Rem would say. I’m on edge, anxious to know if it will all turn out okay, if the family will be happy again, which isn’t a spoiler if you know these books are time travel thrillers. In time travel there is always a chance things will go wrong, but that they can be corrected again. They can be corrected again, right? Right?! Of course, they can, as long as the author (or in this case authors) want it to. Oh, I truly hope these authors want it to.
Most who review this book, and others in the series, are going to tell you they love the fast-paced action, the way Rem breaks the fourth wall, the characters, the backstories that are woven through the series and I love all those aspects as well. What I also love, though, is how marriage is portrayed in these books. It’s not boring, mundane, or something to get out of. It is passionate, special, something to fight for. The bond between Rem and Eve spans timeline after timeline but each time Rem knows that Eve belongs with him, that without her his life isn’t worth living, no matter how many cases he solves, how many wrongs he makes right.
You rarely find a series of books that can balance suspense, mystery, action, and romance. Thankfully, the Rembrandt Stone series is one of those rare, to-be-treasured finds. I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
If you love having a book hangover and trying to understand "WHAT JUST HAPPENED" this needs to be your next read... as long as you've read all of the other books in the series.
I never know what to expect when I begin a new time with Rembrandt Stone. I think like Rem, all we want is for him to get back to the right time with Eve and Ashley! Because then everything will be right in the world. Although after finishing this story I don't know if anything will ever be right for them again.
The authors have blown me away once again by surprising me at every turn. They're hasn't been a moment when I've ever felt I knew what to expect. The only thing I know is that anything can happen. And it DOES in this installment.
With Eve, with his parents, with his cases, etc I feel like my mind and emotions are put through the wringer. What could be better because it keeps me coming back for more and wondering HOW the heck this is gong to be wrapped up in the next book and how can I beg them for more of the same.
Each book solidifies how unique and excellent this series and will always stay at the top of my favorite series... EVER.
I liked that faith was brought up to Rem in a more "you can't avoid this" way. You can tell he's also trying to be "better" with his choices. He seems to question himself more.
And Eve, I love her more each time! Her belief in Rem and her inner knowing (at least this time) of who he truly is just makes me root for them even more!
This series is excellent and not too be missed!
*I received this book for review. This is my personal opinion.
“You just never know how your sins will turn out.”
“God has an eternal perspective, eternal goals, eternal time to spend getting us there. And everything that happens to you, and everything you do is part of that journey to the man you’ll be. What we do here is just the external activity so that God can get at the inside of us, and root out whatever it is that we’re struggling with.”
This has quickly become my favorite series in a long time and definitely among the best books I have read this year. Each book has great mystery, some profound perspectives, and there is always an amazing cliffhanger. Rembrandt Stone is one of my favorite book protagonists, a flawed character on a journey towards redemption. I still love the idea of Stone Quantum Leaping back to the past, trying to right wrongs. And I love even more the Butterfly Effecting that happens from every major decision he makes. It definitely keeps you guessing!
The good news is that Blood From A Stone was another winner from writing trio David James Warren. The bad news is that there is only one book remaining.
This is book number five of six in the “True Lies of Rembrandt Stone” series. This is definitely a series that you will want to read in order otherwise you will be completely lost. When this book starts, Rembrandt is in the past trying to figure out how to undo all the things he previously changed. This book is so good. As soon as you have an idea of what might happen, the author throws you a curveball. The suspense and mystery of this plot is a twenty on a scale of one to ten. I highly recommend this book.
Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book in order to give an honest review.
I accidentally read the first 1.5 chapters of Book 6 before I realized I'd opened the wrong book in my Kindle library. 🤦♀️ That's on me. But because of that, I was sort of like a time traveler myself, knowing what was coming and being unable to stop it. Ha!
I'm of two minds with Rembrandt here. I like him when he shows up and wants to do things the right way. However, there's a big part of Rem that wants what he wants to matter the cost. Which is exactly how we end up where we are at the end of this book, ready for the final installment.
Personally, I continue to feel that this is written more like a TV drama, where different writers tweak the story as the seasons progress. The ages of the characters seem to have changed, and that has nothing to do with time travel. Rem is fifty-two in Book 1, which means he's twenty-eight when he goes into the past. This is mentioned multiple times. I can't remember for sure, but I got the distinct impression Eve was really close to him in age. Maybe twenty-seven. But now here in Book 4 Rem is suddenly fifty and it's stated Eve was nine years his junior. No way was Eve nineteen in Book 1. That's playing fast and loose with the details, writers.
Also there's a rule of Rem's time travel which is suddenly super important in this novel when I don't remember it ever being mentioned before. I found that annoying.
That said, having read the opening of Book 6, this one wasn't as dark as I was expecting as the events played out. That was refreshing. I have hope that there's a major redemption arc coming. Stay tuned!
"I've been waiting for this moment for twenty years. C'mon, rookie. Buck up. This isn't over yet."
With these words, John Booker prepares Rembrandt Stone for one more adventure, and I am ready, oh so ready! I am so in awe of the authors of this series, and I can't wait to read the last book that releases on November 23rd. Will Rembrandt Stone's time travel adventures have the ending that we want? Will he find answers to satisfy the questions that have plagued him from the very first? Rem's efforts to alter his life have only brought mistakes and heartaches as he's gone back and forth in time, but each trip has also added to his knowledge. Surely, he is closer to his goal!
In this book, Blood from a Stone, Rem is determined to capture Leo and stop the killing! He wants the love of his life, and he wants happiness, but it's still eluding him. Will it finally happen in Heart of Stone?
I don't normally read this genre but this series has been an absolute treat. If you're looking for action, danger, and unending thrills, grab a copy of this fascinating book by David James Warren.
I received a copy of this book but there was no obligation for a positive review. These are my own thoughts.
“There are no happy endings,” says Rembrandt, and I’m starting to wonder if he isn’t right. Seriously, the ending for Blood from a Stone is such a horrific shocker I don’t know what to expect next. But I’m keeping the faith that David James Warren will not let this stand. And speaking of standing, standing is the emerging theme for this whole series. I’m not sure Rem has been clear on what he should stand for, but the experiences he’s had are starting to clarify for him what’s most important in life and what’s worth fighting for. This series has great characters. Rembrandt continues to evolve into the best sort of man, and Eve becomes more endearing. The secondary characters have grown as well and, I want them all to be alive when I get to the last page with one exception. I don’t want the villain to survive, and I’m looking forward to seeing how Rembrandt figures it all out and deals with this dastardly person. With just one more book left in the series, I’m anticipating a spectacular conclusion. This is the best series of 2021. I received an advance copy for review but I’ve ordered it because this series is just that good.
It can be a hard task for an author to keep a reader engaged in the 5th of a 6-book series.
But not if you're David James Warren and the series is "The True Lies of Rembrandt Stone."
No, I was just as captivated with Blood from a Stone as I was in the other previous four novels. But Rembrandt is faced with the same task he has been in the other books; one that, in truth, he's wandered a bit off course from. He's supposed to solve a cold case. But he keeps getting sidetracked by those he loves.
There's a serial killer on the loose; but only Rem knows that the murders the police know about will develop into many multiple crimes. Booker is still at risk of losing his life in a liquor store robbery. And Eve, the woman that should be Rem's wife in the future...well, it doesn't bear thinking about what might happen to her.
But, what Rem thinks should occur on this trip to the past doesn't. Instead, there are new crimes and new occurrences; quite a lot of them. New clues. And unfortunately, new killings. Will Rembrandt actually solve the crime and return his future to what it should be?
Enjoy book #5, Blood from a Stone. Keep your hopes up for Rem. Things might just work out after all. But there is still one more book to come...
But don't miss Blood from a Stone. You'll love David James Warren's jaunt to the past, with its familiar music, younger versions of characters you know and love, and the hope, ever-present, that Rem can fix the past. This series is hurtling fast toward an ending, and we're all waiting breathlessly to see what book #6 will contain. But first, you'll have to read book #5, Blood from a Stone!
I received this book from the author. All opinions are honest and my own.
Oh man! What a way to end this book! Remington, what have you done? Sorry. I have no time to write a coherent, interesting review. Instead I have to download the audio of the sixth and final book in the series. I simply must know how Remington's world is set to right. Or can it be set to right? Time to find out.
Robin’s Ratings 5🌟 = Out of this world. Amazing. Unforgettable. A personal favorite. 4🌟 = Excellent read. Couldn’t put it down. Will recommend to others. 3🌟 = It kept me engaged/entertained. Glad I read it. 2🌟 = The book was fine but not a favorite. Just a matter of personal taste. 1🌟 = For whatever reason, this book didn’t engage me.
Blood From a Stone The True Lies of Rembrandt Stone #5 By David James Warren
Rembrandt "Rem" Stone has a problem, he is a time traveler who is trying to fix the past to restore the present. But every time he fixes something in the past his present is altered. And now he has lost everything - his wife, his daughter, his home - everything. But this time he knows what to do - he'll stop the cycle before it begins.
But Rem is about to discover that time doesn't like to be messed with and there is always a cost involved - and this time he might not like what his meddling is about to cost him. But t save the future - his future - Rem is going to outwit time and fate.
This is the fifth book in The True Lies of Rembrandt Stone series and there is no let up in the action as Rembrandt Stone attempts to bring a killer to justice and to do this he must stop him in the past. But with two cases to solve Rem needs to balance everything or risk destroying any chance he has at restoring the future.
The first thing you need to know is you can't read this book without reading the first four books. If you attempt to do so you will be missing most of the story as each builds upon the book before. This is not a book for light reading - it is intense page-turning suspense. This is well-written and won't leave you feeling let down. Nope, instead, you will be counting down the days until you can read the sixth and concluding book of the series.
I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion - all thoughts expressed are my own.
Omg! This is one of the best of the 5 books so far! I am so shocked by the ending. It can’t end for them like this!!! I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book.
Three authors -- bestselling author Susan May Warren, award-winning author James L. Rubart, and debut author David Curtis Warren -- team up to write this time travel series.
In Blood from a Stone, police detective Rembrandt Stone returns to stop a crime that prevents the justice he has been seeking in the future. Can he stop two murders and save the lives of those closest to him? Everytime he tries, it affects the lives of others, and not always in a good way.
With each rendition of his life, Rem continues to change into a better man, and his relationship with Eve and his parents improves. Faith elements are stronger in this book, especially through the words of his father. This book is filled with tightly-written suspense and memorable characters. Like the other books, it ends on a cliffhanger. The reader is encouraged to start with the first book, Cast the First Stone. Each book is filled with intense action as Rem chases down leads. The plot twists will keep the reader on the edge of their seat, especially in the final chapter of each book. Readers look forward to the final installment, Heart of Stone, coming in December 2021.
Recommended for adults who enjoy crime fiction, time travel, and fans of these authors (Susan May Warren, James L. Rubart, and David Curtis Warren).
Disclaimer: Book reviews are my honest opinion of books I either purchased or received free of cost from the publishers, publicists, and/or authors. I am not required to write reviews, nor to even post positive reviews.
I don’t think my heart can handle much more of this series! LOL Every time Stone goes back in time to try to solve cold cases and fix his mistakes, more tragic things happen. Poor guy can’t catch a break it seems.
I highly recommend reading these books in order! If you enjoy time travel drama, you will love this series! and even if you don’t usually read time travel (I don’t), then give this series a try anyway. I have read all of them so far and have really enjoyed them!
Once I get start reading the ebook I don’t like to stop until I’m done. I like that most of the characters are the same throughout each book and sometimes we read things from Stone or Eve’s point of view. Highly recommend this series!
I received a copy of this book complimentary for blog and social media review. All opinions are my own.
If anyone needs to know how to write a series or how to create characters that grip readers and simply won't let go, I will hand over these books and tell them to study. This storytelling is fantastic. Painful, but fantastic.
I walked into this book with the wounds that were inflicted by the ending of the previous book. Rem and I were in a similar state: desperate for things to be fixed. Fix it, trippy time watch. Fix it, Jesus. Whoever can and will, JUST FIX IT.
My absolute favorite part of this book is Rem's growth. Though he's certainly learned throughout the series, and he is more humble and slightly less bitter than when we met him, I felt like this was the book that highlighted how far he's truly come. I enjoyed seeing that, even if the process has hurt like the devil.
I'm so beyond ready for the next book in the series. I'm hopeful for good things and so excited to see the interactions between certain characters! I'm not telling you how to live your life, but don't miss this series. Just don't. You can thank me later.
I received a complimentary copy of this novel from the publisher. All expressed opinions belong to me.
I am loving this series. It is torture to have to wait for the next book to come out, though. Thank goodness they are coming out so close together! I never know what to expect when I dive back into Rembrandt Stone's life (other than he can't get it fixed yet, because there are more books in the series). I love the writing style and feeling like I'm a part of the story. Although, I must say, I'm glad I'm not Rembrandt. It would be super confusing waking up and not knowing what in the world is going on. Either for young Rem when old Rem has been back in time, or old Rem when he wakes up in a new "current" time. I can't wait to read the last book in the series. My hunch about what is going on with the Jackson Killer is getting stronger and I want to see if it's true.
I got a free copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own and given voluntarily. No compensation was received for my review.
Blood from a Stone by David James Warren for the fifth time allows readers to time travel with Rembrandt to the past as he tries to fix the future back to the way it was. Of course, more problems arise. After having failed four times, he hopes and prays that the fifth time is the charm. Again with the knowledge of past events, he tries to stop the crimes before they occur, but it does not end up correct and a domino effect of errors start occurring. After reading all five novels at this time, I really can’t wait to see how Warren ties up this series. Does everything go back to the way it was? Does Rembrandt learn to accept life the way it is? The plot continues to showcase danger and the hunt for the Jackson Five killer. I do enjoy the amount of action that is crafted in the novel. I do enjoy that Warren has Rembrandt try really hard to win his wife’s Eve affections. Overall, Blood from a Stone is another thrilling installment, and I can’t wait to get my hand on the final book and see how this series ends.
I received a complimentary copy of Blood from a Stone by David James Warren from Sunrise Publishing, but the opinions stated are all my own.
