Robin Dubicki almost lost his best friend to cancer last year, but everything changed the night they met the mysterious tall, dark, and handsome Doctor Sexy. Now, Timothy’s different. The sports-loving, sunshine man who was always at Robin’s side is now attached at the waist to his new boyfriend, and Robin’s convinced he’s joined a cult. Why else would Timothy refuse to go out in the daytime?
While Luke’s friend Michael is immersed in taking care of his new boy, Luke is the only one to notice Timothy’s best friend investigating. If he’s not careful, the young man’s going to get himself killed digging for dangerous secrets.
When Robin puts himself right in harm’s way, Luke has no choice but to act, and this loner vampire and lonely boy will find the connection they’ve both been looking for—if Robin can break free of a rival vampire trying to manipulate him.
W.M. Fawkes is an author of LGBTQ+ urban fantasy and paranormal romance. With coauthor Sam Burns, she writes feisty Greek gods, men, and monsters in the Lords of the Underworld series. She lives with her partner in a house owned by three halloween-hued felines that dabble regularly in shadow walking.
One minute Robin’s best friend Timothy has a terminal cancer diagnosis and then suddenly he’s “all better,” switching his college coursework to night classes and shacking up with a mysterious doctor that Robin is pretty sure is some sort of night-worshipping cult leader.
Robin is undoubtedly hurt that Tim would abandon him and their friendship like that, but mostly he’s worried about his friend’s welfare and the increasingly suspicious circumstances that are getting weirder by the day.
Curiosity really did kill the cat though, as Robin soon finds out, when his investigations lead him into a dangerous situation where he learns first hand that vampires are very real and he’s about to become one of them.
This novella was a fun little follow up to the short story For Life (Tim and Michael’s story). Thankfully, this one was a bit longer and juicer in the storytelling and relationship development, letting the reader learn more about the nature and history of vampires, while also getting a better romance progression between new leads Robin and Luke (Michael’s vampire BFF).
Although not marked as a sequel, this very much was one, in my humble opinion, so if a couple of short M/M vampire romances tickle your fancy, I definitely recommend starting with For Life!
This one is basically the companion piece to For Life.
Robin is a sweetheart, he's out and fierce but really, he's lonely and missing his best friend.
When he starts investing into the supernatural world, he lands himself in a whole load of trouble.
Fortunately Luke is on hand to keep an eye out for him as Michael and Tim are still all wrapped up in each other.
In fact, they both peed me off a bit at how they dismissed Robin's legitimate concerns.
Still, Luke isn't oblivious and I really liked how he came to realise that his concerns over Robin might be more than not wanting the existence of vampires to be revealed.

This story is linked to the 50-page For Life so I suggest you read that before you pick this. It will help you to understand all the dynamics going on in this story.
Robin was the bubbly, attention-loving best friend from For Life, so I was expecting more of the same from him especially when he was being paired with the "stuffy" Luke. What I rather got was what lay beneath the surface of both these men and it wasn't what I was expecting.
Once again, these two authors(who are on the way to becoming faves) managed to weave a tale within such a small number of pages that took me through a gamut of emotions. I thoroughly enjoyed it and will recommend it to anyone who is the mood for a short, well-written PNR with a solid HFN.

This is the second book in this series and, to me, is extremely realistic. We all know if we had a friend who was going to die and then all of a sudden he "disappears" from your life, someone is going to have to tell us SOMETHING. It is just that poor Robin, in his quest to get his friend back, went a little to0 far and found an unexpected rescuer. Both of these books were good, quick reads.
I had mixed feelings about this book. Before I go into my review, i want to make clear the book is good & worth reading, but a particular character struck a nerve with me.
Robin is left in the dark about his best friend Timothy being turned into a vampire. It doesn’t help that his best friend has completely ignored him and is spending all his time with his new boyfriend who’s a mysterious, older, and rich doctor. While Robin is floundering missing Timothy he’s determined to uncover the truth about what happened to his best friend. Unfortunately his digging gets him in trouble.
Luke is Michael’s (Timothy’s boyfriend) best friend & he sees what Robin is doing and he’s worried. He understands what Robin’s going through because he has those same feelings of abandonment since Timothy has come into the picture. He’s happy for his friend though. But Michael & Timothy are too involved in their new relationship to see anything else going on around them.
SPOILERS NEXT PARAGRAPH:
It hurt me to read what Robin was going through. Feeling abandoned and lonely. Then he’s attacked by a feral vampire. It pissed me off to no end when Timothy is ecstatic that Robin was turned, without consent mind you. Like WTF?!? Timothy is a selfish and horrible friend. I’ve had plenty of those. So it struck a nerve with me. A friend who’s only excited or cares about something when it benefits them, not truly a friend. This soured the book for me. The fact Robin didn’t have a good support system as he was coming to terms with his new life, it was hard for me not to be mad for him. Sooo I was angry for most of the book.
I’ll still read other books from this author.

Definitely read For Life first - it’s short but introduces this world. I really liked Luke and Robin as well as getting to see Michael and Timothy again. There’s some action and danger and a little sex. I didn’t always feel the connection between our MCs though.
I quite liked this sequel to For Life, even if I didn't really like those characters here. In the first one, Timothy was dying of a brain tumour, and his roommate and bestie, Robin, drags him out to a club to try and get him to live in the moment for once. While at the club, Timothy has a seizure and meets Michael, a neurosurgeon who also happens to be a vampire. Michael can save Timothy by Turning him, which he does, and that leads into this book, taking place a few months later.
Since being Turned, Timothy has (from Robin's perspective) just ghosted Robin. He stopped staying at the apartment, moving in with Michael instead, but hasn't officially moved out. He's just moved most of his stuff, usually while Robin has been in class, so he's totally avoided him. He hasn't given any explanation for the sudden about-face, and will only communicate with Robin via Face Time. He's switched all his classes to night classes, and refuses to give any further explanation.
This leads Robin to wonder if he's fallen into the clutches of some kind of night-worshipping cult. After all, what kind of medical treatment would necessitate switching to a completely nocturnal existence? Robin is suspicious, and isn't completely sure that Michael isn't an abuser, since separating victims from their friends and support networks is exactly what an abusive person would do. Michael may be a doctor, but Robin doesn't trust him. Alternating between being hurt and angry that Timothy has ghosted him in favour of this guy he only just met, whether he's saved his life or not, and determined to not just let his bestie slip away from him without a fight, Robin takes to digging for the truth.
He snoops around Michael's and Timothy's house, and gets caught by Luke, Michael's best friend and fellow vamp. Despite Lukes attempt to reassure him that Timothy is fine, Robin presses on. Luke is afraid that Robin's inquisitiveness will put them in danger, so he follows him. He sees him Googling his suspicions, and then later follows him to a witch's bookstore (the witch happens to be Timothy's aunt; not sure this was really relevant, but someone had to give Robin the book on vampires, I guess).
Through all this, Luke is the only one who seems to give even half a shit about Robin's wellbeing. Michael and Timothy are too wrapped up in their new lurve to care about anything else, and Timothy's spent the three months learning the ropes as a new vampire. Luke thinks they should tell Robin what's going on, sure that this will allay his concerns about Timothy, but Michael flat-out refuses because The Secret Can't Get Out. He doesn't seem to care that Robin's investigations might put him in danger; he just wants it suppressed.
Well, surprise, Robin's digging doesn't put the vamps in danger, it puts Robin in danger, and he gets attacked by a hungry, feral vamp outside Michael's blood bank. Luke arrives just in time to Turn Robin in order to save him.
Timothy is so self-absorbed that he is only elated at this news that his bestie is now immortal too. When they all meet the next day to discuss things (well, okay, Michael and Timothy come over to Luke's so Michael can try to lecture Luke), he's all "isn't this great? We'll live forever as besties! What a great thing that has happened to you!" No apology for treating him like shit for the preceding three months, no concern over how Robin might be reacting to 1, being attacked by a vampire and almost killed or 2, being Turned without his prior consent. He just thinks Robin should be totally fine with now having to drink blood for sustenance. I wanted to give Timothy a gigantic wallop upside the head.
Michael has his head up his ass as well, having only been concerned with keeping the secret, and not at all with keeping Robin safe, so Luke is rightfully pissed at his best friend, who seems to think he can order Luke around like he does his Boy.
Robin is unsettled by the whole situation because it seems to him like Luke is always annoyed with him and doesn't really want Robin around, and he struggles with wanting to blast Timothy for being such an ass and telling him what he really thinks, but is afraid of pushing away one of his only real friends. His temper finally snaps one night, and he runs off. Luke isn't there to stop him, because he has gone to his own Maker to get advice on what to do.
Turns out Robin is unsettled because their bond isn't complete, because Luke didn't bite Robin, he only fed him. So Robin is partially tied to the feral vamp who tried to kill him. Long recap even longer, Robin is abducted by the feral (who unsurprisingly is not a Good Person), and Luke has to fight to save Robin in time.
The story itself was a good one. But I was angry almost throughout the whole story at Michael and Timothy. Once Michael is faced with exactly what is happening, and his role, however circuitous, the best he can say to Luke by way of apology is that he *might* have been a *little* self-absorbed with Timothy. Might? MIGHT?? ::rolls eyes:: I'm glad Luke told him their friendship was the only thing saving Michael from a broken jaw, but I wanted more from him. I wanted Robin to tell Timothy that, while he was glad he's safe and okay, after the way Robin had been treated for the past three months, he wasn't all that inclined to be very friendly or forgiving toward Timothy just then.
I would love to read a book where a conflict between the besties just isn't resolved. Not everyone needs an HEA (well, the MC's do, of course. But side characters? Not so important). I would have found this much more satisfying with Robin telling Timothy that maybe in the future he could forgive him for not trusting him enough to tell him the truth, but it wasn't going to happen right then, and he'd like him to leave. Why couldn't Robin have HIS feelings be the most important? Why, even with all he's got to deal with, is he still trying to make sure that Timothy is content and unruffled? Maybe later on Robin will get his thoughts in order and let Timothy back in, but why isn't he allowed to be angry at how he was treated? I really would have loved to see that, and see Luke telling Michael that it's too bad Timothy's upset, but them's the breaks, and he'll just have to deal. For that matter, Luke had every right to show Michael the door too, maybe not breaking the friendship, but a cooling-off period was definitely in order, and then maybe Michael could have come up with more than a half-assed apology for his behaviour.

I enjoyed this. This was rolling along as a cute short, but nothing really standing out. That changed a bit when Robin ran off. That part bumped it up a level. Cute start to the series. I love forward to seeing how it evolves.
I knew I was going to love this story because I loved Robin in For Life. But I didn’t realize how bad Timothy was going to affect him. And it broke every inch of my heart. Robin is like a dog with a bone though, and he’s determined to figure out why this cult thing is happening in Timothy’s life and why he’s losing his best friend. And the only one to see what is REALLY going on and going to happen, is one who didn’t want to be involved in this mess to begin with. Luke.
But the thing with Luke that cracks me up, is he is literally so old school. He has no desire whatsoever to change with the times. Sure, he dresses in today’s fashions and has a phone and stuff, but it’s more to blend in and not because he wants to change. It’s not that everything was great back in the 1800s and before, but it’s what he knows. It’s what he was born into and he is almost torn I think. Part of him definitely doesn’t want to relive that time, because he remembers things that don’t need to be remembered, but again, it’s something he really knows. But what is funny about Luke as well, is how in denial he can be. Robin is everything in a being, human, whatever, that Luke loves. He just doesn’t want to admit it. He doesn’t want to admit he’s jealous of Timothy and Michael, so he throws it off as it makes him gag.
But when he catches Robin spying on them with the same look in his eyes that Luke feels in his gut, he knew he couldn’t deny it anymore. He also knew he was going to have a world of trouble on his hands. And he was right. But I love the dynamic between these two. Luke doesn’t want to be a dom or daddy, he wants someone like Robin that fights back and stands up to him and shows him that fire that is in his soul. But the trauma Robin went through has gotten to him and with things not fully right between Luke and Robin, it’s throwing both of them off.. And it’s at this point I want to shake them all. And I do mean them all.
I didn’t like the way they left Robin out. I understood keeping Timothy sequestered. Common sense. But Robin is the one who would have laid his life down for Timothy and they basically just left him out to dry. It was totally unfair. And I’m on board with Luke in that I wanted to punch Michael because he was being a complete butt about it and totally in the wrong. If they had just let Robin in and let him be with Timothy when it was time, all the bad that had happened probably never would. But it left Robin with too many questions, not enough answers and in a world he knows nothing about.
It’s a good story though. I still love the guys. I still want to punch Michael and I think Timothy should have stood up to Michael. Compulsion or not. But eventually it got to where things needed to be. If you haven’t read For Life, you need to. It won’t make as much sense. But it’s a good set of stories. And I almost wish there were more to add to them.
Loved this follow up companion story to For Life! Robin was Tim's best friend in the first book and while he is absolutely grateful that Tim is no longer dying, and even that he is in a relationship, he feels abandoned. Tim no longer comes out in the sun, he won't do some of his favourite things, and he already lives with his boyfriend. Robin is battling with the question of if his friend is in trouble, being manipulated by an older man into some weird cult or somehting, or if he is just jealous of a new relationship and drifting away from his friend as their lives change.
At the same time there is a vampire dealing with similar feelings. Luke is Michael's best friend and they were turned at the same time. While Luke has the benefit of knowing about all the supernatural stuff going on, he is still feeling a bit jealous and left out as Michael spends all his time with Timothy. Finding Robin snooping around gives him something else to worry about. As Robin gets closer to danger it brings to question whether it is more dangerous for him to know or not, as well as the question of when a new relationship is being close or if it is excluding all others.
An intriguing book with a fair amount of relationship figuring and some very sweet and sorrowful moments, this was an excellent read!
This story's a follow-up story to a previous title called For Life. This one's a shortish novella with a HEA, MM romance. Vampires, paranormal romance. Main characters in this book are Robin, Timothy's bestie and Michael's bestie Luke. Who happens to be a vampire. As is Michael and Timothy too, these days, that is. In For Life Timothy's dying of a fatal illness but happens to find a cure in the form of Michael as a saving angel as he turns Timothy saving his life. In this book, Robin is very worried and not a little bit jealous because his bestie has upped and gone without a real explanation and moved in with this older rich and handsome and mysterious Michael. Robin suspects and fears his friend has joined some cult. He ends up traipsing into danger and needs a hero to save him and gets it. Happy end's still a bit in danger but once again Luke the hero to the rescue.
This is not a very complicated story nor with much surprises either. That doesn't deter from liking it. It's a predictable but still entertaining classic kind of vampire story, just a bit short and predictable. Nicely written.
This is the follow up for For Life. The author cowrote this with Sam Burns.
You really do need to read the first one for some context. But at about 40 pages, its a quick read. For book two Robin is lamenting the loss of his best friend. But not to cancer, like he thought, but to Timothy's daddy boyfriend Michael. Robin is lost and lonely. He wants to understand why Timothy has cut him out of his life.
Luke is a centuries old vampire and best friend to Michael, Timothy's daddy boyfriend. He is developing feelings for Robin and just wishes Michael, Timothy...somebody...would tell Robin the truth before his snooping gets him in trouble.
Again, for such a short story, the characters were remarkably fleshed out. The story was a bit melodramatic, especially throwing creeper vampire into the mix, but still a highly enjoyable story.
This was an excellent and entertaining book about vampires. Robin misses his friend Timothy. He has almost disappeared from his life after he was taken to the hospital by Michael, a doctor he met at a club. Now Timothy is better, but dropped out of school and won't go out in the daylight. Robin is a curious lad and also misses his friend desperately. Luke is Michael's best friend and feels obligated to keep an eye on Robin as he knows he is going to get into trouble with his curiosity. This story of vampires is full of danger, stubborn Robin's, a protective vampire, a rogue vampire, sexy times and bonding. Good story and would recommend to anyone to read. Read "In Life" first. It is Timothy's and Michael's story and is a short read. It is also well worth reading.
This was the first book by this author duo that I've read and it was a pleasant read. It centers around a young man, Robin, whose best friend has changed after nearly dying, and Robin wants to know why. It's a fairly quick read and was engaging enough, although I didn't particularly find it overly memorable. It had an interesting storyline, it just doesn't have the deep substance that I might have wanted. I'm particularly fond of vampire stories but this one was just OK in my opinion. I'm giving it 3.75* stars because it was well written and edited and I was engaged enough to finish it, but it feels a little lacking. I think with a little more background and world building it has the potential to be really good.
3.5/5. Very... uhhhh... Boring. I'm sorry, it was boring. Like, I can see the vision/journey, but it just... it didn't quite make it there. And that's wild ASF considering it was way longer and had more time to get there. I didn't hate it, it simply felt like a half-effort kinda thing; kinda thrown together and lacking the emotional and mental connection needed to give it the heart it was trying to convey. It was almost formulaic, and I never feel that way about work from these authors, so it was a bit jarring and made me sad. I love their work--even when it needs editing and has inconsistency that makes me twitchy--and I feel like an asshole, but sometimes it just be like that.
Robin may have his faults but I think we can all agree that he’s also tenacious, loyal, passionate, brave and wonderfully prickly. I wasn’t sure about Luke from the brief glance we had of him but he’s a true keeper. I love his intelligence, compassion, spirit and the care he shows Robin. They both need each other and while neither makes it easy and at times quite painful, they are worth everything and more. “But I could be yours if you’d be mine.” Sigh, those words, the feelings and the smoking hot chemistry these two have. Ngh, more please. Amazing vampires with heart, with soul and full of pure love...now that’s something I can sink my teeth into.
Very enjoyable and well written. I especially enjoyed the scene of Luke visiting his captain and maker and the captain realizing that something was wrong with the bond between newly turned Robin and Luke. The scene had intelligent dialogue and underscored the parent and child bond between the maker and who they turn. The physical relationship between Luke and his ‘little bird’ Robin had depth and emotions. It was hot, too. I liked that there was no daddy dom, just the two MCs agreeing to belong to each other. Michael and Timothy played a good supportive role in the book. Vampire stories are my favorite paranormals and this is a good one.
The main characters of this story is Luke, a Quaker vampire and Robin, a curious college student. Robin's best friend had disappeared with his doctor Michael for 3 months, after having almost died from cancer. When he returned he was better, but started taking night classes. Robin, wanting to know the truth put himself in a dangerous situation and was attacked by a feral vampire and was left for dead. Luke, Michael's best friend, found him barely alive and turned him to keep him alive. The rest is Luke and Robin's story and it is a sweet love story and I enjoyed it.
4 stars… Oh this one was so much better than the other one “For Life” not so much insta love and wayyy more angst and insecurity with these two which I personally enjoy. I also felt like the length was much better suited to the plot and didn’t feel so hectic and rushed. Is Luke an old name…? I don’t feel like a vampire that’s like 200 has the name Luke but ooookay.
This is the follow up to In Life and I was so excited for Robin and Luke’s story, this did not disappoint! Robin is very lost and lonely and convinced something is not right with his best friend Timothy, he unwisely ends up in need of rescuing from Luke. Their story is bittersweet but ultimately joyous.
For Life was excellent, but this one was much more satisfying to me, since both MCs needed to work on their relationship instead of having the instant maker/child bond that Michael and Timothy have. Luke is set in his ways and Robin has an independent steak wider than he is tall. It's a lovely clash of personalitites!
A well planned spin on the Vampire theme that results in an emotionally satisfying novel filled with strong Main Characters & solid world building. Believable circumstances propel the characters to higher personal & interpersonal growth leading to the HEA!! Buy the Book & Enjoy!
Robin starts this book feeling abandoned by his bestie Timothy who has a new beau and can’t come out during the daytime. Deciding to research what’s going on, he gets more than he bargained for plus a new love interest.
Cute, sweet, hot and fun this is Robin and Luke's story.
I liked it more than I did Timothy's but maybe it is me but it felt long in the way that it wasn't holding my attention for long so it took me 2 days (granted I was only reading at work) to finish this.
I wasn't in love with the couple from book #1, but I really hated them here. Both of them. Thank goodness I loved both MCs in this one so much better. Better as individuals and better as a couple.
I really enjoyed this novella which follows on from In Life. This is a very quick but enjoyable paranormal read. Robin is extremely happy that his best friend Timothy didn’t die from Cancer last year but he’s definitely changed since meeting the mysterious, tall, dark & handsome doctor Michael. Robin believes that Timothy is now part of a cult since he refuses to go out in the daytime, so he decides to do some investigating on what’s actually going on. Luke, a vampire is Michael’s best friend and he notices that Robin is investigating what’s changed with Timothy, putting himself in danger without even realising it.
Luckily Luke is to the rescue. Both Robin & Luke are adrift after their best friends have pretty much ditched them now that they’re in a relationship. They’re happy for them both but are also kind of jealous, as they want someone to be there for them, even if they struggle to admit that to themselves. I thought that they were good together but it takes them a moment to work things out but they eventually get there, and it’s worth the wait. I’m looking forward to reading more books from Sam Burns & WM Fawkes in the future. I’d recommend this novella and both authors to others.
