Maverick’s bigot father raised him to be a racist.
The moment he sees me—the biracial new girl—an invisible target is placed on my back.
Before the first day of school, he turns most of the senior class against me.
Maverick thought I would roll over and take his abuse, never anticipating a battle.
He was mistaken.
I will fight until my last breath.
Maverick and his friends can suck it.
When I don't fold under pressure, he comes at me full force, wanting to destroy me.
He never expected to be the one to fold.
*Previously titled I LIKE THE WAY YOU HURT. This book has undergone an extensive rewrite to include more craziness, smut, several added chapters, a prologue, and new epilogue!*
Warning: This book contains racial slurs, abuse, graphic language, and explicit sex scenes. It's not for readers who require trigger warnings, so PLEASE proceed with caution.
Lorrain Allen aka Trigger Queen has enjoyed writing ever since she was in first grade. She loves to get away from the world and lose herself in a book. As a young adult, she became a romance book junky and was inspired to pen her first romance by the many creative authors whose books she's read. Her main focus is writing nontraditional dark romance. The subject matters of her books are controversial, but what’s life without a little controversy?
Man… I had been looking forward to reading this book for months, but I was left disappointed by the time I finished. The writing style was too jarring for me (not enough details) and when the H does something extremely despicable towards the end, the h caved way too easily for me.
Cocoa’s half black/half white (h). Her mom gets married and they move away from Los Angeles to Montgomery. It’s her senior year, which makes it sad for her because she’s very involved in school and is moving away from all her friends, so she’ll have to adjust to a completely new scenery before going to college. At her new school, she meets Maverick, who’s the star quarterback and popular. She gets invited to his pool party and she decides to go.
Maverick was raised in a very rac!$t household with an abusive father who beat him up as he was growing up and also forced him to watch him r@p€ not only his mother before she committed su*c*de, but many other women as well. In fact, he forced him to lose his V when he was 12, because if he didn’t, that means he was g@¥.
When Cocoa shows up to his house for the party, he doesn’t receive her warmly. Luckily, Cocoa’s feisty and fights back, with her words and physically when needed- and she won’t run away from a confrontation/fight👏🏻. She’s got thick skin, and she doesn’t let things get to her. He constantly belittles her and throws rac!$t slurs at her, and this is where their toxic relationship begins- a mostly noncon/dubcon one.
SPOILERS BELOW:
This book has A LOT of triggers (see ⚠️), but we get warned about them, so I won’t take stars away for that 🤷🏻♀️. Not only is she bullied by Maverick, but others bully her as well- like Maverick’s girl friends. At one point, his possessive side comes out (when the video taken of her is sent out to the senior class) and he forbids things from happening to her, but not enough of that happens😒.
Because of the writing style and the amount of irredeemable qualities in Maverick, I was close to DNFing this. He was abused and tortured, BRUTALLY, growing up (I was cringing and hurting for him), which is why he hulks out and gets triggered so easily- demonstrated by the amount of times he gets into fights and pushes people around, Cocoa included. Buuuut… I did NOT care for the VERY abusive way he was towards Cocoa. There’s a difference between the noncon/dubcon actions that Cocoa ends up enjoying (which I enjoy reading too 💅) and the way he smacks her around (like when he slams her head into the dashboard of his car, causing her to black out, etc). And the thing is, I didn’t feel like he regretted it much 😬; Okay, I’ll rephrase- he didn’t regret it enough to actively change during these parts in the book (which kind of makes sense- considering what needs to get done at the end and the abuse he’s encountered himself). I kept going because this book isn’t long, and I NEEDED to see if he gets redeemed, but I don’t think he fully did 😏. He doesn’t give her the benefit of the doubt when he’s shown pictures taken out of context, causing him to lash out at her. Which leads me to…
The writing style. Sooooooo much happens. This book packs a punch in terms of what happens in 338 pages that many things were told instead of shown. Some things were glossed over- like the viral video of Cocoa showering (consequences? Actions? Feelings?)- or just told quickly in order to get to the next scene. I want the angst, the buildup, the tension, and I didn’t feel like that happened enough.
This book is STEAMY 🥵🔥, especially when it came to the primal play, fighting smex scenes 💦😅 (which I loooove), but even in this, the scenes were over quickly 😐. I appreciated that Maverick ALWAYS made sure Cocoa got off, but I needed these scenes to be more fleshed out. A few times, I would reread to understand the positions better. She’s on her belly then her back? Where was the transition? How did they get from point a to b? THAT’S what I mean about needing detail 😏.
And don’t get me started on the fact that Maverick calls Cocoa’s arch nemesis to finish him when Cocoa leaves him high and dry. We don’t see it happen, but it’s implied 🤢🤬. They weren’t together, but at this point, he only wants Cocoa, and this just grossed me out.
Overall, there were many things I liked, but also many things I didn’t. I was CLAPPING MY HANDS when Maverick finally received therapy. I wish I had seen this in more detail, ESPECIALLY after the last thing he did to Cocoa (when he embarrassed her with racist slur and people threw food at her). Did he grovel? Umph- not enough. I’ll admit, I got emotional when he got on his knees and hugged Cocoa’s belly while worshiping her body and asking for forgiveness, but he needed to REALLY GROVEL and suffer more for what he did (the embarrassing way he calls her the n and hoar words 😣). Yeah, I’m bitter 🤷🏻♀️. He didn’t give her the benefit of the doubt- and asking the culprit of the lie for “smex” to uncover the truth was annoying as well (because she’s nekkid and waiting for him when he confronts her) Ugh.
I love noncon/dubcon/CNC/primal play, but I also need the grovel to be worth it too… in the epilogue, i would’ve liked to see more about how his therapy has helped him and what that means in their relationship 😏.
⚠️safety squad⚠️ -noncon/dubcon -Primal play -bullying -rac!$t (A LOT of these) and homop#@bic slurs -child abuse/torture flashbacks -no sharing or cheating buuuuuut… -OWD (H has on page smex with 2 different OW before interested in the h and then one time calls OW3 to finish him when h leaves him high and dry during the bullying phase- we don’t see it but it IS after he’s interested in the h and after he’s made the h O) -OW3 also bullies h -OMD- the h kisses 2 OM, one time, it was consensual -somnophilia -H is physically abusive towards h -during their many-month separation at the end, both are celibate -H was a manhoar, h was NOT a v

STORY: Uummmm.... Yeaaaaaa.......Sooooooooo....There comes a time when you come across a book that is dark and F$&ked up and I am voting this book as one of them. I NEED THERAPY; I NEED THERAPY; I NEED DAMN THERAPY after this read, because I loved it. The best way I always describe these books, this is all kinds of wrong that reads all kinds of good. It’s disturbing, but you can’t help it because it feels like it’s your fix. You need to deny it but you can’t. Hell, I wouldn’t even call these triggers in the book, it’s like waving red flags 🚩 and sirens warning the reader before approaching this book.
So we are just going to sum up Maverick by saying, he needs anger management. He’s like a tick away from an atomic bomb exploding. His normal is everyone else’s wtf. He was extremely intense, and he holds first place in 2021 for the most intense and angry book guy for me so far. There are no words yet created in the English dictionary for him, because he surpasses the words obsessive and possessive. The words omg, omg omg omg was on repeat while reading this book. Cocoa, her type of strong in this book I like. The pull and tug chemistry between her and Maverick was ........... I have no words. They were both each other’s drug of choice that they just couldn’t get enough of.
CHEMISTRY: Non con, non con, non con, non con throughout this book. You all, it’s not normal, but you couldn’t look away (of course I don’t condone in real life). But it definitely added another layer and experience to this book.
SECONDARY CHARACTERS: I don’t know if there will be a book 2, but there are so many characters that I love.
Nix and Dee - Maverick’s best friends. Who would have thought Nix and Dee would be my favorite.
Cocoa’s Friends - Kate, Lucy, Jamal, Kayla even Lo and Micah. Really liked them was hoping for a hook-up somewhere.
OVERALL, very intense ride and not everyone will be here for it. If you are into dark romance with extreme intensity from the hero, this will be for you. If not put it down and walk away.
✰✰TRIGGERS: Bullying, degrading language, rough sex, force intimacy, non-con etc...
****I don’t equate these stories to real life. It’s about personal taste and what you would or want to tolerate with the books you read. I know we all have different opinions and preferences with what we read. I based my book reviews on my preferences and what I like, and while these preferences may not be the same for others, I hope this review was still helpful.
This version was so much better than the original. Maverick was a psycho but I loved him in this version and the heroine actually felt a lot more likeable and stronger in this version too.
The cover is innocuous. Deceiving, even. Because the villain is the hero. The cover is boring and in no way reflects Maverick. Unless you count the black background His moral compass is non-existent. He has no good intentions; no noble causes, he doesn’t justify or make excuses for his actions; he rapes, he hates, he fights, obsesses, he abuses, he stalks, he avenges. He loves only 2 people: his best friends and brothers in spirit if not by blood. Until Cocoa. She’s his nemesis, his kryptonite and 100% his match.
17-year-old Maverick is beyond redemption by the time he meets Cocoa. From their initial meet until the epilogue (and I'm sure until the day he dies) he focuses on her- hellbent on breaking and then owning her. He doesn’t even KNOW what his endgame with her is because he has no idea how to navigate this new knock life is forcing on him. He literally can’t sit still from the tension of her presence in his life. Still, anyone who gets in his way is dealt with. He, I’m not sure why I was surprised by this, choses his demons above his best friend, turning against him for the first time in their lives.
She fights a strong fight. She makes silly decisions typical of a 17-year-old in her position would make, but otherwise stands her own against all her enemies. She’s vocal and physical about it. Not a minute before the turning point of the book does she fall and when she does, its at his hand and in one of the ugliest ways a young biracial woman should not have to endure. And when she picks herself up, her fight is silent. She does not forgive, and she does not forget.
That’s when he finally stops spiralling, but, in true Maverick fashion, not before he systematically ruins the people who have contributed to his brokenness and hers. Its insane. He’s insane
With that out of the way, he starts the process of growing up and forgiving. Making amends and healing and allowing himself to care about others. Well, as much as Maverick can, anyway. He doesn’t make a complete personality change, there’s no good boy to see here. But he makes the effort and there’s redemption for him while staying true to himself.
Some might say she gave in too soon. As blood thirsty as I am, I think her capitulation is natural considering who they are. Plus, she can handle him.
5 stars for me and I can’t justify it. The writing isn’t particularly spectacular; the trope has been done to hell and back. The pace is too fast or maybe it was me speedreading because I desperately needed to know things. He’s really REALLY bad and I shouldn’t root for him, but I do.
The flashbacks are bearable. No long-assed chapters of back story. They’re apart for less than a year – thank goodness no extended years apart.
He has meaningless sex with ow once or twice after he meets her. On page. They’re both celibate during their breakup. No cheating.
The HEA is solid. I bet he takes her final breathe the day he dies because he’s not leaving her behind.
A+++ for the trainwreck DRAMA. Maverick was such a crazed obsessive psycho. The whole time I was like 😨😱. Boy was crazyyyy. This was such a toxic relationship, but I was all about that drama. I honestly don't see how this relationship could work out realistically lol.
Our heroine, Cocoa, is a drop dead gorgeous mixed race girl who is fiery and spirited. Cocoa doesn't take shit from people, for the most part. She will NOT hesitate to throw hands or beat up people who piss her off. Cocoa was forced to move away and attend a richy rich school after her mom remarried. She then meets Maverick, the school golden boy and star quarterback. Maverick is a psycho. He was raised by a sadistic and abusive racist father, who would beat and rape women in front of Maverick and force him to participate at a young age. Maverick is somewhat self aware that he's messed up, but doesn't really try too hard to change. Maverick is instantly attracted to Cocoa (much like every man who isn't gay in the story) and becomes completely smitten and obsessed with her when she fights back against him after he tries to "put her in her place." This begins their love/hate tango, mostly hate on Cocoa's part for most of the book.
While Maverick is conflicted about his feelings and obsession with Cocoa at first, I was honestly surprised at how fast he just accepted it and rolled with it. While he would get angry at his friends for poking fun at his infatuation with Cocoa, it never stopped him from running over and harassing Cocoa or beating up men who tried to flirt with Cocoa. It was so ridiculous and funny when he would drop everything and go stalk Cocoa. By the end, Maverick went completely off the deep end. When he nonchalantly told Cocoa he stole her house key and used it to try to break into her house and rape her in her room, but was thwarted by Cocoa locking her windows and pushing furniture in front of her door, I was like... BOI WHAT 👁👄👁 . Cocoa is crazy too, she barely reacted to that and was like, "I knew it, I better make sure to keep locking my doors and barring the windows." GIRL RUNNNN. Then he broke into her house and unlocked her window ahead of time, sneaking in, and "they had sex for hours." 😑 Maverick keeps raping her whenever he gets a chance, and one time he even KNOCKS HER OUT AND TIES HER TO HIS BED, and Cocoa wakes up to him raping her. His excuse? "You took too long to wake up." Cocoa breaks free and he chases her naked through the woods, where he rapes her again and says he let her escape on purpose so he could hunt her down. My girl Cocoa is once again also completely insane, because this incident barely traumatized her and she doesn't really mind it much 😳.
In the end, Maverick makes a big mistake of believing the mean girl bully who wants to break him and Cocoa up, and he yells racial slurs at Cocoa. It takes probably an hour before he gets his ass chewed out by his friends who tell him he's an idiot for believing the mean girl, and he regrets it. But this is the straw that broke the camel's back for Cocoa (not the smacking her unconscious and raping her repeatedly or breaking into her house), and Maverick has to try to get her forgiveness.
Both Maverick and Cocoa were unhinged. Maverick completely didn't see anything wrong with his crazed behavior, and while Cocoa snarks at him and points out how messed up he is, she honestly doesn't actually seem to mind or do too much to report him or stop him. I did really enjoy reading this crazy ass couple though. Top knotch entertainment!
Safety: * Heroine not a virgin, but is never shown having sex with anyone but hero in the story. I usually don't like it when heroine isn't a virgin, but I didn't mind this one. * Hero is definitely not a virgin, is a big manwhore. * OW scenes: hero has sex with an older woman in the first chapter before meeting heroine, has sex with some random girl at a party, gets blowjob from evil bully after meeting and falling for heroine (uses her to solve his horniness for heroine). * OM scenes: heroine kisses hero's rival before realizing she likes hero. Hero repeatedly interrupts and stops heroine's dates with OM. Heroine gets a forced kiss on her by OM near end, but pushes him away and rejects him. *Lots of rape and noncon, along with hero raping heroine while she's unconscious * Trigger warning for racism and racial slurs used. * No condoms, heroine on birth control and hero is disappointed about that. * HEA with epilogue, no babies, ends on engagement
What can I say? This book hit high marks for me. A story about a broken, conditioned-to-hate (anti)hero, Maverick, and his budding interest in a forbidden girl, Cocoa. Cocoa is confident, resilient, and spunky, and unlike in most bully romances, she retaliates and does not suffer bullying or mean girls. Maverick is a risk-taker, broody, dominant, seeking highs some of which he unleashes in the MMA ring. He is the school king. He is also racist. And while the storyline includes racist as well as dark themes, there is definitely some light-heartedness and humor. Be on alert to carnival brawls or pool parties. This book was highly entertaining, underpinned with a fitting playlist; I could not put it down once I started.
This book is lengthier, darker, and steamier than the former I Like the Way You Hurt, and the writing has matured and improved -- smoother transitions, cohesiveness, depth of character, more descriptive showing vice telling. Pace is perfect, comprehensive, no filler, and just longer than a fast burn. I love the addition of characters with their personalities nicely depicted. Both Dee and Nix, Maverick's best friends, sound dreamy, supportive of their best friend yet honest about the football hero's short-comings. The bro jabbing created some fun and hilarious moments. I would love to read their stories as interconnected stand-alones. Likewise Cocoa's crew added some cool-factor diversity to the story, both new friends and back-home ride or dies, from shy and bashful Lucy to feisty, always-carries-brass-knuckles Lo. Never a dull moment in this tale.
Now my favorite...the love scenes. Sweltering! Big fan of dubious consent and skilled, alpha males and fervent passion, and this story carried those themes in delicious abundance. Cocoa and Maverick were not wilting wallflowers -- feisty against quick-tempered -- when tensions mounted and desires overflowed, even coerced, their love was intense. Maverick's unbidden attraction to Cocoa was unrestrained, all-consuming, and sometimes unwittingly violent.
The path to happily ever after is paved with love's healing. A passionate story of strength, growth, and forgiveness with some juicy dark themes and dark humor, a very entertaining and touching read. Maverick may be my favorite of Lorrain's (anti)heroes yet.
Didn’t couldn’t and can’t. The mmc is a racist and a rapist. Heroine wakes up to him having sex with her but i couldn’t find where the fucking consent is. No thank you. There is nothing cute about being outright racist to the heroine and then them falling for eachother either.
Great bully romance featuring Maverick who has had a terrible childhood, raised in a racist and abusive home by his father John. Enter Cocoa, who must finish her final year of school in a prestigious and affluent school. So much drama in this story with a lot of hostility and some cringe worthy moments. Sensitive readers beware. All in all a good story and a HEA!

BYOO- bring your own opinion….after reading these quotes from the book..I am done for Maverick the rapey king and his sex obsessed madness that magically recovers
“You enjoy raping me?” “Absolutely. It’s my favorite thing to do.” He kisses my nape. “I’m going to rape you again, and again, and again.”
“I go to physics and eagerly await Cocoa’s arrival, but she doesn’t show. By lunch, my temper surpasses boiling point. I storm into the cafeteria and zero in on the table where she usually sits. Her friends are there, but she’s absent. I swiftly make my way over to them. I know she came to school today. After second period, I checked the parking lot and saw her car. “Where is she?” “Who?” Jamal asks. I grab him by the shirt. “Don’t fucking play with me!” I yell. “We don’t know,” Lucy squeaks. “She wanted to eat lunch alone.” In agitation, I bound outside to search for her. I’m gonna blow any second. The nippy temperature does little to cool my disposition. Fuck it. I’m going to her house. Then I spot her, sitting in her car and hastily duck behind a tree to avoid being seen. My heart rate instantly slows, and my anger evaporates. The mere sight of her calms the beast within me. This is what she does to me. I watch her for a few minutes before heading back inside to lie in wait for her.”
“You can’t keep doing this, Maverick.” I stomp my foot. “I’m not yours. You said I was at the movie theater, but I’m not.” His muscles tense. “Yes, you are.” “Are you in la-la land?” I throw my hands up. “We haven’t had one civil conversation since meeting.” “You’re beautiful.” “What?” I ask, taken aback by his compliment. “And smart. You’re a fighter too. I admire that about you.” I’m at a loss for words. Am I in an alternate universe? “You’ve spent the last three months sexually assaulting me, more recently while I was unconscious.” “You were taking too long to wake up,” he states”
“His hands clench. “I like you.” I blink rapidly. “You don’t know anything about me. We’ve never even been on a date.” “We can go on a date tonight,” he says. “Anywhere you want.” “Absolutely not.” A vein throbs in his forehead. “Why?” Is he for real? “Umm, let me think.” I tap my chin and look heavenward. “Because you’re a fucking dingbat.” He pounces on me and slams me facedown on the nearest desk.”
“You humiliated me… encouraged kids to throw food at me.” My voice thickens with emotion. “An orange hit me in the face. I could’ve been seriously injured.” “I’m not letting you go.” “You don’t have a choice.” Maverick lunges forward and I lash out, cutting him across the torso, but he doesn’t falter. He swiftly captures my wrist and squeezes brutally. I yelp, dropping the knife. A line of red blooms on his shirt, creating a stark contrast against the white cotton. A violent struggle ensues. I latch on to his hair and yank hard while trying to knee him in the balls. I’m picked up and slammed onto the bed stomach first. His heavy weight presses me into the mattress, trapping my arms beneath m”
Does the last one even make sense?? She is complaining and crying about orange hitting her face when he has been raping, assaulting, pushing, throwing, slamming her head all around and this is what she complains about— an orange 🍊 and him calling her a derogatory word…….. WTF
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
H and h were really mad,,,This book was madness and I loved it.
1.5*stars. I just can't. I so wanted to give this book higher rating because I liked the premise of the story, strong heroine and good writing. But I just can't get over when a strong and likable heroine in the beginning, later becomes weak and is okay with which isn't a great message to impressionable (especially young) readers out there thinking this what they want in real life.
Dnf @52%. I don't have a single clue as to why I continued reading it as long as I did. Oh God, it was bad. Horribly boring and just.....Nope. I quit. I seriously rec staying away from this one. 🤚😫
PS- Who says "coochie slayer"?!!😑 Totally ruined my reading experience.
Maverick’s Madness is a darkly addictive, twisted sexy AF dark romance. Maverick and Cocoa are intensely addicted to each other! I love the way Lorrain Allen writes her Anti-Heroes they do whatever it takes to get the woman they love and nothing will get in their way.
I will start off by saying my review does not take away from the author's talent. My dislike was for what seemed to play a major part in being a defining way of displaying just how jacked up Maverick was. I know books give these disclaimers to prevent someone being offended, so I thought I could handle it and I could just not so much. I think it(read review or the story) only needed to happen once for us to understand his damage. However, it not only happened repeatedly, but she continued to walk away as if not affected by it. Is this really the mentality of teenagers? I mean I can't see her looking over it multiple times, especially since she was supposed to be this well rounded teen. It was very hard to keep reading certain scenes( I just skipped those pages), but once I did I did enjoy the rest of the story. I enjoy drama, it had that. I like seeing the main character with a support system and both had that. It really does have the making of a good story my stomach just kept turning at those run-ins), I just don't think it should have been about high schoolers.
Maverick, Maverick, I don't know what to say about you man🤔you broke me, my mind is overwhelmed with your actions, your past, your everyday struggles, your pain. I could tell through out the book you wanted to just give up cause of the pain you're going through, just when I thought "this is it" in walked in miss Cocoa. The baddest chick alive who can put up with your crazy behind, no matter what you throw at her, Cocoa never folded, she stood strong not given an inch. She met up everything you dished out, she knows deep deep deep wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy down you're a good guy, it's why she put with you in the first place. Both of you challenges each other, the attraction is so strong you can't even stay away from each other, the sex scenes in this book is over the top H.O.T 🥵💦🔥HOT out of this world amazing. This phenomenal read by author Lorrain Allen is beyond what I thought it would be, she's easily becoming one of my top favorites dark read authors, she's a truly talented author. There are so many great scenes in this book that I could've chose from but this one👇🏿spoke to me and made me teared up a bit😢
BEST SCENE BY FAR:
💜I was spiraling towards rock bottom until you came into my life and healed me. Loving me isn’t easy, but you never gave up. You inspired me to become a better person. Thank you so much for being a courageous woman and sticking by my side. I can’t promise perfection, but I pledge my undying love and devotion💜
I was done for when I read that part, I fell hard for Maverick🥰
I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone who asks, cause it's that good. Now I will warn some of you, if you can't take the heat 🔥than stay out of the kitchen, cause this is not for you. There's a lot of trigger warnings ⚠️ please beware and be cautious ⚠️cause you've been told⚠️now with that being said, when will i get to hear about the rest of the gang author Lorrain Allen? Yeah you heard me, I want their story cause Maverick's book deserves some cousins to make it a series. I know some of you will say "why is this reader asking for all of this?" Well, you'll see what I'm talking about when you read Maverick's Madness, trust me you'll want them too, why don't you go head and download this book? Come On I Dare Ya😈I Know You Want To😈
The essence of this story is romance. It checks most, if not all, of the boxes that make up the requirements for a romance novel. That's not why we're here though.
This was previous titled I Like the Way You Hurt and Lorrain used most of the bones of that story to build something completely different. She completely dismantled the Maverick we knew and gave us a Maverick with a sturdier foundation. There is a light shed on all of his darkest parts and we see him so much more clearly than we ever could. He may not be all bad but he definitely ain't all good.
This story provides you a perfect example of learned hate. Hate doesn't just appear out of thin air. It's taught. It festers. It infects. And Maverick is infected.
Cocoa has no intention of being his punching bag or his nurse though. She knows her worth. But there is just something about disasters that make you want to look again, even after you've walked away.
This isn't a pretty story. It's really ugly actually. Maverick isn't the villian here but he's not the hero either. He's just a guy who got trapped in the dark until he found a star to light his way.
There are a ton of triggers here. This may be way too much for some people. Lorrain worked her ass of on rebuilding this story though. So if you decide to read it, you're consenting to everything she wants to show you.
Another blockbuster hit, whew chile that darn Maverick , a very dark and deranged soul so dark and dangerous.. cocoa is a Ray a sunlight and a breath of fresh air for him.. I have to give it to her bc I don’t think I could be with him the name calling and they way he treated her. I guess that is his way of loving her bc she was his sun/Angel to pulling him from darkness... I still think maverick should’ve killed his father the world be better of that scumbag but hopefully he’ll get the same treatment in prison aka dead man walking.. the sex scenes 🙈🙈🙈🙈 I’ve shouldn’t been turned on but hey I’m human sue me.. even though this is antihero but i guess I can like him... They will have ups and downs but there’s no such thing in a fairytale relationship....... ps this book isn’t for the fainted heart or have triggers flashbacks... bravo Lorrain Allen another stellar read👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Maverick Maverick Maverick, where do I even start with you.
I think he’s on the same level of insanity as Dare from Even if it Hurts.
This was another quick read for me, once I started I couldn’t put it down. Love love love Cocoa. She is everything I wanted in a strong (h) who stands up to her bully/tormentor. My only criticism is she should have made Mav grovel more for the shit he did to her.
Also check TW as there are racial slurs used in this.
Maverick and Cocoa have a complicated relationship. It's not hearts and flowers by any means. It's toxic, dysfunctional, and abusive. That being said I couldn't put this book down!
Cocoa is a mixed race girl whose mother gets remarried and she relocates to a new town. Maverick is the star quarterback player, what everyone thinks is a rich entitled kid whose father is a judge so he's untouchable, and all around golden boy douchebag! I hated Maverick until I read his entire story. That's no excuse for his racism but he was a miserable little twerp. His childhood was horrible and disgusting. The things he put Cocoa through were irredeemable.
Their relationship was volatile. I have to say Cocoa was a strong girl because I would have murdered Maverick rather than look at him. He was horrible to her. That being said I was rooting for them in the end. I know. I know. I'm a pushover for intense chemistry. These two were hot as the fires in hell.
I couldn't put this book down. I loved the story but disliked the horrible people. Does that make sense? Whatever, it ends on HEA so it's all good. If you want a bullying, cruel, irredeemable hero then Maverick is your guy. He's also an ott j/p, stalking sexual assaulter but that all makes the story unputdownable.
What a story!! I was eagerly awaiting this book and it was everything i hoped it would be and more! Maverick is just one of those sexy, possessive, jealous, crazy alpha guys, who you just love to hate! He sets his sights on Cocoa but doesnt expect her fighting spirit and what you get is an explosive and emotional plot filled with angst and sizzling chemistry!! I loved how the characters evolved as the story developed.
I think Lorrain has really set the bar for the fiesty heroine character....Cocoa really is one of my favourite heroines I've read in a very long time!
If your a fan of dark bully romance with strong anti heroes and even stronger heroines that make them work for it, then you need to read this book!
I loved it 🖤
I received an ARC from the author and this is my honest review.
recieved a free arc in exchange for an honest review. I will admit I was little hesitant when the author announced that she was taking down "I like the way you hurt" and she was rewriting it. Well I'm so glad she did. Maverick's madness if I could give it 10 stars I definitely would!!! This one is so much more entertaining, fuller. It withholds no punches. Maverick is without a doubt handsome, yet broken ,psychotic deranged teenager ( but you'll have no choice but to love him) who has his sights set on the beautiful, fearless feisty, independent, strong willed Cocoa. The author set a standard on what a heroine should be like in bully romances. Once you start reading this book, you're not going to want to put it down. Congratulations lorrain Allen it's a hit!!
I wanted start by saying wow just wow Lorraine did her thing in this awesome rewrite of I like the way you hurt...she touched on bullying and racism it goes to show that racism is a taught behavior
Maverick knew he liked Cocoa but didn't know how to express his feeling towards dating a black girl so he gave her HELL
Cocoa was just as feisty and bad ass like Maverivk her attitude and her will to fight back mad me love her more...you will learn to like Maverick and his brokeness
Not only is this book well written it's compulsively readable. I couldn't put this book down for more than a few minutes. The chemistry between Cocoa and Maverick was stellar from the beginning it practically oozed off the page. And Maverick, his redemption arc was just so good. This book made me cry in the best way.
This was the remix of I like the way you hurt. It was still as good as the first. It had a few major changes, Maverick was still as crazy/hurt as ever. I think Cocoa made him feel and that's what he didn't know how to handle.
I really wanted to like this book but I just can't get behind the abuse, name calling, and rape. I get that he had a bad childhood but that doesn't give you the right to sexually assault and rape someone and then say that, "they enjoy raping them; it's their favorite thing to do; and that they are going to rape again, and again, and again." I just can't get behind that especially with all the racism he spewed. I don't understand how you could still end up liking someone after that. I get that he has trauma but again so does everyone else and they are not going around acting like that. He saw his mom getting sexually abused and raped, he even went through sexual and physical abuse but still decides to do that to Cocoa?! I'm happy that Cocoa stood her ground most times but...idk I just can't get with it(the other parts).
Besides that the writing besides those types of scenes was well written for the most part besides some unrealistic plot devices, unnecessary addition of details, and kind of cringey word choices used... I don't know any person that would tell some random kid they met at the mall all their details and then agree to go to a party at their house (luckily her friends went with her). I know true friends have your back but Maverick came with too much drama (then again he is the male lead). I felt like besides the rapey stuff alot of it was predictable in the sense of Maverick being the predictable bad boy with a bad past that is "dangerous" because he's "fucked up" in the head. And I think that s why I couldn't enjoy it because I couldn't find any redeeming qualities in him and he is a product of that man/boy needing the right girl to help him realize what he needs to change/save him...

4.50 Stars. (BW/WM). Kindle Unlimited Edition e-book. As I was reading this story, I kept getting the feeling that I had read a book very similar to this one; so at about the 50% point, I went back and read the blurb and the statement that this was a rewriting of the book “I Like the Way You Hate”. I am happy to have found that clarity. I finished this version of the story and find it to be better than the prior version...the first version was good. The protagonists, Maverick Carter and Cocoa Matthews are likable and memorable characters as is their turbulent romance. The author presented their possessive, obsessive, loving romantic and sexual chemistry on the page for the reader to sense, feel and root for their happy ever after-which they get.
At first I saw the title “Maverick’s Madness: A Dark High School Bully Romance” and thought, “How could high school romance be dark?”, absolutely ignoring the bully part in it.
I forgot I hate the bully trope.
But worse, this book is dark as fuck. The hell? He hit and r*ped her over and over again and she was like “I’m a strong woman I can take this” and just forgave him because he was that way because of his trauma. Fuck’s sake, he called her a whore, the N word LIKE PUBLICLY ANNOUNCED TO THE WHOLE SCHOOL AND SHE FORGAVE HIM? TWICE?
Nope. Nuh uh. Do yoursef a favour and don’t read this.
P/s: I don’t even know why I didn’t DNF. I started feeling icky halfway into the book but I guess I just wanted to know how this bullshit would be wrapped
