Penny

I used to think that I was better than him. I thrived at a private school for gifted children, and he barely made it through the public school system. I was smarter, and I didn’t miss an opportunity to let him know it. Then, I told a lie to get him in trouble and out of my way.
Turns out, karma is a bitch.
Five years later, my once oh so promising life is nothing more than a fading memory. I’ve hit rock bottom. Just when I thought it couldn’t get any worse, fate has one more cruel twist in store for me.

Ryder

I hated her from the moment we met. My hate has only grown over the years. I lost everything because of her, went to jail and became the man I am today.
So, when she shows up at my club, unable to repay her debt, I can’t believe my luck. She owes me more than the five grand, and I’m going to enjoy making her pay.

***The Hate Vow is a dark romance standalone with a HEA. The book will be exclusively available in the Sinful Secrets Anthology releasing Sep. 15th***

This book was as fucked up as I initially thought it might be after reading the 1st chapter. 🤌🏼

The Motorcycle Club the hero belongs to consists of rapists who think that beating, drugging or raping a woman is a perfectly normal thing to do and NO ONE in the story calls these pigs out on their bullshit. The hero kept treating these assholes (who wanted to gang rape his girl, as a matter of fact) as his brothers and friends and I —🗿.

The beginning of this book disturbed the living fucking hell out of me. The rape scene felt very degrading even though the heroine got to enjoy the process and had her orgasm *eye-roll*. Taking into account the fact that she was about to get gang-raped right before the hero offered his candidacy for a rapist post ... 👄

The way other "men" were mad at him for not letting them take turns RAPING her, for a record, made me sick to the stomach. My 13th reason for hating books that feature motorcycle clubs: they're too misogynistic even for the likes of me.

I dare say I have 3 main issues with the above mentioned scene:

1) it happened right at the beginning of the story when I still didn't feel a tiny bit of connection or attachment between the main characters to make it seem more dubcon-ish.

2) he fucked her bare, of-fucking-course. Then he demanded that she take a morning-after pill. Such a pill is NOT good for any woman's health and I was angry as fuck with him for being a selfish sick fuck who didn't bother spending 2 seconds of his precious dick time to wrap it up. He even dared to taunt and mock her after committing such a disgusting piece of act since in his opinion she deserved this. 🚬
I personally don't think that sex should be used as a revenge device in a romantic story or in any kind of story. No matter what she did in the past, there are more effective and less sickening ways to punish a person who had faulted you.^.

3) I can hardly imagine myself getting over the fact that the hero works with rag pieces who were ready to take turns raping his woman/any woman.

AS FOR THE POSITIVES

I still low-key hate the hero, Ryder, 😂 but him taking care of beaten Penny (h) and killing two assholes who had wronged her did make me warm up to him, to say the least (becoming a murderer so that you remain the one and only abuser in her life? Romantic! 🥰).

I also appreciated how the author managed to show Ryder's slowly developing feelings for Penny: initially, the sex scenes were kinda mechanical and the asshole treated her like a sex doll, but the further into the story, the more evident it was becoming how ensnared in the heroine he was, which was evident both in intimate scenes and his general behavior. The author did a good job of convincing me that he fell head over heels with Penny (in his own way 🤌🏻) and it was ah-ma-zing.

All in all, the book was engaging. Almost a 4 star read.

I feel like an outlier right now, but...I liked this. Or maybe I'm just really desensitized to books like this.

I like seeing her in pain, but only when I'm the one causing it.

Straight up the hero raped the heroine and I was like—

The hero is a fucking horrible person, but he killed the heroine's abuser so...brownie points for that 🥰

Style: Dark MC Romance
Story: 3.5/5
Enjoyment: 4/5
Dark Level: 3.5/5
Sexual: SEX-CITINGLY GOOD
Triggers: YES/Extreme
Male: Dark, Intense & Alpha
Series:
Pages: 232
Kindle Unlimited: Yes

STORY:
Wow. You will fall into either two categories when you finish this book. Horrified and disgusted, or you love it, don’t think there is any room for in between on this one. I think to like this book, you have to love dark romance no matter how many emotions it evokes from you. Basically, to describe this story and experience, the first 3 chapters you are reading with your jaws to the floor and eyebrows raised. Pretty much 70 to 80% of the book, your jaw is still in that position, to the floor. The loathing that Ryder feels towards Penny it’s unbelievable the savagery that was his treatment towards her. It was unreal at times, granted he still carries hate for what she did 5 years ago. Most of the time I was cringing and saying OMG, I can’t believe he just did and say that throughout the book. The title is so befitting of this book. The story starts off on very strong hate and gradually declines. Penny, wow, can I just say a lot of people will say she is weak because she is. She is so broken and compliant, and this was also one of the disturbing parts of this story. But where she has been the last 5 years has also played a role in why she is the way she is. What she has been through will and can set off triggers for other readers.

ENJOYMENT / CHEMISTRY :
At times I found myself saying I’m going to hell, because I can’t look away and felt really invested in this story. In other words, I loved it, and it was intense for me. I remember having the feeling of reading Penny’s epilogue and felt a little emotional and thought everything came full circle for her because you feel as though you are and were on that journey with her. Ryder’s and Penny’s chemistry were not made up of that Romeo and Juliet love story. Their story is different and unorthodox. It’s like a runaway train gone at full speed ahead, and you want to come off, but your not making the attempt to get off because you want to stay and see what will happen.

SECONDARY CHARACTERS:
The only person who stood out to me I would love to see a book on is, Maddox. He is the Prez of Ryder’s MC and Ryder is the VP.

Overall, a crazy, disturbing and intense ride for the reader. Again, you have to be a lover of dark romance to like/love this book. I appreciated the journey, though it was hard at times.

**Triggers: attempted rape, physical abuse, force intimacy etc..

***I don’t equate these stories to real life. It’s about personal taste and what you would or want to tolerate with the books you read. I know we all have different opinions and preferences with what we read and hope this review was helpful.

This was really meh. The characters were one dimensional. No chemistry. No angst. The author couldn’t even remember the heroine’s physical traits; in one chapter she was a brunette with brown eyes and in the next she was a blue eyed blondie.

“Big brown eyes, too large for her face.”

“Her head falls back, and strands of her long brown hair tickle the skin on my stomach.”

“With red-rimmed eyes, she looks up at me, a barrage of emotions reflecting back at me. I’m so lost in the depth of those blue orbs”

“She shakes her head furiously, strands of her dark blonde hair falling in her face.”

Yeah, it pissed me the f off. I couldn’t even remember the names of the MCs 1.5 seconds after finishing the book. That’s how much I loved it. Highly recommend. ⚡️🥵

Ain't Ryder a dreamboat guysssss🥰
And ain't Penny a little babe🥺

Nevertheless your honor ✋
Me likey

This is getting old. It’s not fun when it’s this miserable. I need to fix her, so I can break here again myself.

That's my good king

The fact that him working with a bunch of rapists is ... not pointed out at is HORRIBLE.
NOT ONE motherfucker said that they should not be doing it.
I hated how everyone jumped on in the 'im gonna rape her and beat her up because she owes me fucking money' club.

Coming to the mama bear Penny

When I tell you this woman's standards...
She really said "it's fine I expected to be beat up when the guys dragged me in but you only✨raped✨ me and i know you from before so you made me feel safe🥺"

“Do not compare me to him. I am nothing like him. I would never hurt you like that.”
I can feel her throat work under my touch as she swallows. “I know that, but you hurt me in other ways.”
“Shut up, you like what I do to you. Even when I’m rough with you, you come, so don’t fucking lie.”

Now papa bear Ryder

My SUPERMAN🤝
Like good god bless the audacity and generosity of the male species never fails to astonish me.
He ...popped the cherry and made her cum for the FIRST time ever and when he was about to take her on fours he saw scars (aw sad right) and the proceeds to let her go AND THEN drumrolls please
He picks her off the streets and keeps her in like a dog.
Bruh MOJO (the dog)
Guys ....
THE DOG was more respected than she was.

But taken THAT aside (the whole plot)
I ....liked it.
He was a dick yes I know but he was also considerate of her.
He saw her soft and vulnerable
And all things nice
I loved the gradual shift from the hate to love.
Ryder did love Penny in his sick way.

PLEASE him kissing her and then continuing to treat her like LITERAL poop >>

To conclude it all

🥰Penny's ideal weight is Ryder on top of her🥰

Ryder, my king
You might be a rapist and a horrid person and a bitch.
But you're a GOOD rapist okay?
Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
I believe in you 😘
You killed that guy who abused her.
You're NOTHING but a hero to me.

Ryder is an abusive A**hole.

Let me start by saying that I never leave reviews. But I felt compelled to finish this book just so I could tell everyone... The “hero” is an irredeemable abuser. Just to name SOME examples... He R***d the heroine repeatedly and manipulated her into staying with him by lying and emotionally abusing her. He never actually owns up to any wrong doing or apologizes to Penny for any of the horrible sh*t he put her through. It’s horrendous. It’s like, Ryder thinks that just because he’s not being physically abusive like her Ex boyfriend that his behavior is okay. It’s not. I could go on an on but I’m getting upset. Just Arghh! This book made me so mad. Please don’t read it.

a really good story about how some mistakes in your life cast a long shadow.

The h made a huge mistake when she was 15 and the H suffers as a result. But so does she as she gets trapped by her own guilt into saying yes to the wrong man.

What unfolds is a story of how the h finds herself again when the man she wronged saves her time and again.

multiple triggers - I don't think the opening chapter is rape b/c the h herself didn't think so. She didn't give consent either and I feel conflicted.

I pretty much cried throughout this book b/c I felt so bad for the h.💖

I did think some aspects of the story were not fully fleshed out especially near the end, how did the H realize h didn't love Tommy? How did h know that the H forgave her? This left the book unsatisfying.

*** Book Q & A***

* How did the book make you feel?: I enjoyed this book a lot more than I thought I would. I was in the mood for something dark and gritty. There was a lot of gratuitous violence, but the story was very entertaining.
* How do you feel about how the story was told?: You must be a fan of dark romance to enjoy this book. I enjoyed the premise of the story and how the characters’ feelings gradually evolved from hate to something more. The pacing was good. There were a few typos, which diminished the story for me, and a few continuity problems.
* What did you think about the main characters?: I understood Ryder, the H’s motivations concerning what he did to keep Penny (h) safe. He sure did run hot and cold, though! The beginning was rough and I didn’t think Ryder would be redeemable at first. Whether he actually was is questionable, but I enjoyed the book, nonetheless. Penny was very much a damsel in distress the whole book. I don’t usually like a helpless h, but it worked in this book.
* Which parts of the book stood out to you?: Their scenes were hot, hot, hot. Lots of chemistry. There was some angst.
* What themes/tropes did you detect in the story?: enemies to lovers, MC (a very ruthless MC!), secret baby
* What did you think about the ending?: Ryder manned tf up and I loved it! I was happy for the year later epilogue.
* What is your impression of the author?: Enjoy this author but I hope for better editing in the future.

Triggers: rape, domestic violence, kidnapping

Revenge is best served cold

From childhood Penny, wanting to remain the apple of her adoptive father's eye and not share his affection, taunts newly arrived foster member, Ryder, until she speaks a terrible lie causing him to be thrown in jail. In the intervening years both suffer hardships.

Owing money to a motorcycle club and unable to pay, Penny attempts to make an agreement. She re-encounters Ryder who is second in command and soon learns some debts simply cannot be easily satisfied. Ryder vows to make her pay and the drama, heat, and suspense of the story unfold.

The story is a novella that feels like a full novel, an unexpected treasure hitting my favorite elements --enemies to lovers, dominating alpha male, demure but strong-willed heroine, revenge, blackmail, high steam, and dark themed dubious consent wrapped in a light suspense thriller. Excellent character development, I could feel the bittersweet emotions, the internal conflict of the main characters. Supporting characters, even though having minor roles in this book, were showcased well, in addition to nicely highlighting the main characters. There was an undercurrent of grittiness that enriched the storyline and held my attention. I liked the evolution of their relationship, their personal growth to relinquishing animosity, to forgiveness and acceptance.

An excellent, short story that did not feel like one.

Merged review:

Retribution to redemption

This extended edition is even better in this enemies to lovers, revenge love story with does of motorcycle club to whet the threat appetite. From jealousy and insecurity, Penny's childhood lie against foster brother Ryder brings about an irrevocable misfortune and life-altering damage. When they meet again, Ryder is determined to exact retribution on Penny.

More of the same elements enjoyed in the novella -- relentless alpha male, demure but strong-willed heroine, revenge, blackmail, high steam, and dubious consent -- but in this version greater character development, history, and tension. These created stronger bittersweet emotions and highlighted the internal conflict of the main characters, which rolled off the pages. Also great backdrop of supporting characters, highlighting the main characters. Overall great story of retribution to love's redemption and an enjoyable read.

The Hate Vow by C. Hallman is such a breathtaking masterpiece of a read it took my days to be able to write this review because I simply can’t put into words how EPIC this book is.

You just truly need to read this for yourself and see the utter perfection that C. Hallman wrote. The journey of Penny and Ryder is so beautiful. This is one of those books that you will not be able to put down once you start reading. I took this book with me everywhere! You could feel the emotions capture your soul when reading this one. I felt the need and love in my bones.

Initially I thought due to title, this would be an Arranged Marriage read which it is not.

The Hate Vow is true hard core enemies to lovers. If you are an enemies to lovers fan like I am, you will LOVE this book. If you love a-hole, dominant, mean, bossy heroes, you will LOVE Ryder! He is cold, mean, ruthless, takes no prisoners and is sexy as hell! I could see why Penny is so taken with him. Mmm Ryder.

I LOVE revenge plots, enemy to lover, hero hates heroine books and second chance romances. This book had it all! There’s dun/con, rough sex, HATE sex, ah it doesn’t get better! To sum it up, it’s my definition of everything I need in a sexy read.

There’s also sweet redemption in the end so don’t worry.

Trigger warning though: the heroine, Penny, does get abused a lot in this book so just FYI. She’s also weak but that never bothers me in my heroines 😉

This is definitely my top reads of 2021 and a now favorite. I would recommend this to ANYONE. It’s perfect.

This book was going so good and I wanted to rate it four stars but it feels like 100 pages are missing. Things were so rushed in the ending, it’s like the author got tired of writing it and just wanted to wash her hands of it.

We don’t see him grovel for ANYTHING. Not for sending her away, not for missing their baby’s birth, not for treating her like shit. NOTHING. Just randomly shows up one day after being given permission from his keeper and tells her he bought them a house. He obviously values the MC over her. All of these issues could’ve been resolved if they authors had put the same effort into the last half of the book as she did the first half. It’s so disappointing because I was looking forward to seeing him grovel. But no he’s just forgiven.

3.5 "Hit Me Baby, One More Time" Stars

This one was weird to read and I have mixed feelings... First of all, Ryder is the Vice President of a motorcycle club, which was a pleasant surprise, as I love motorcycle club related stories.
There are triggers EVERYWHERE, so consider it a warning. Penny was a punch bag for me... maybe a rug-doll? I don't know, just so dormant and in each turn she ended up being assaulted... 1, 2, 3, 4,... how many times, I just lost count.

P.S. I LOVE the cover!

I really wanted to like this, I love a good revenge hate to lovers story. Especially when there is very good reason for the hate but this just fell short for me.

I wanted more character growth and depth, both of them needed to be fleshed out more. The sex happened way too early, it should’ve been teased & taunted more. I like to be kept on edge when it’s a revenge hate/ you’re my prisoner trope.

I really hated how every guy in the chapter was portrayed as a general POS. All we learned of them is that they push drugs and will gang bang and or rape a woman for payment. That’s not the kind of biker stuff I want, I’m all for the threats, blood, gore and killing but the threat of rape was just too heavy through out.

The Hate Vow by C. Hallman

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

5 STARS

I don’t normally read reviews, but this time I don't know what draw me to do it. I have to say that I was a little disappointed that some of the people didn't like it.
Because of those reviews, for me, it was like reading a story with BDSM said elements and the only BDSM elements are spanking and a little choking.
Really?!
I have read much darker books than this one, from this author.

I don't know why I read the reviews before.
I personally loved the book, and for my tastes I can say that it was a little dark.

Penny and Ryder meet when they are teenagers. Penny adddopive family takes Ryder in foster care. Penny, being spoiled and a brat, hates Ryder even before she knows him, and finally does a pretty number on him, sending him to jail being innocent.

What goes around, always comes around, that's how karma works. In the last 5 years, Penny's life is a living nightmare with her boyfriend. At some point she escapes. She was expecting her ending, but nothing prepared her for what she was about to find. She escaped one prison and executioner with other. Ryder is about to collect her debt she owns the MC club.

Ryder can belive his luck when he sees Penny in his MC club. He will extract the debt she owns the MC club. He and only he. No one will touch her. He "kidnappes" her and takes her to his house, keeping her as his made and personal sex slave.

I personally loved the story, especially MOJO, my heart broke for him. When I got to that part I was so upset, that if something bad had happened to him, I would have stopped reading.

I loved Penny and Ryder as characters. Of course I hated Penny for what she did to Ryder 5 years ago, and especially finding out who her boyfriend was. I really appreciate Ryder for what he did, he could've been worse to Penny and make her suffer pretty good. Don't get me wrong, It's not right what he did to her, but she enjoyed it, and he could've been much worse to her.
I hated Penny for the lack of fight for what she had to endure 5 years. I totally got her defense mechanism.
I loved how the things got in the end, how they got their HEA. They both deserve it.

I really would love if we can get Maddox book, because I hated that prik. I want to see him meet his match, and knocked down on his ass by a woman.

Fantastic read....Blew me away!

This book absolutely blew me away! so many plot twists and tropes, but done so well I just couldn't put it down. Ryder was everything you want in a book boyfriend and Penny was a such a strong female lead. And together they were explosive. Their chemistry was undeniable and I adored Ryder's protective side. And his damn dog...absolutely friggin adorable! And holy hell the plot twists. I had no idea what was coming next. Honestly I could go on about this book for days, but just read it! You will not regret it.

First off, this book needed major editing. There were typos everywhere.

The plot was really dull and repetitive - basically, it was either the H and h having sex or the H saving the h from being raped - and yet the angst was surprisingly low for a “dark romance”. The characters were not fleshed out or interesting at all, physically or personality wise. The H supposedly had a rough life in and out of foster care and the H and h had a history spanning back to when they were younger, but we barely got any flashback scenes or any details about the past besides why the H went to prison (which was a stupid reason). We didn’t hear anything about the H’s experience in prison. We didn’t get to see any true emotional development or feel emotional connection between the two. All of the (like two) twists and turns in the story were very predictable. The sex scenes weren’t great, in my opinion… the h orgasmed hard her first time having PIV when the H did nothing but thrust away. The H kept attempting to give her oral but she’d tense up and he would think about how weird she was.

But what bothers me more than anything is the fact that the h LIVED with her abusive ex for years and yet somehow she was still a virgin (in every way). Even the H questioned this in the book, but unless I totally missed it when I was skimming, which to be honest is possible, this remained a mystery.

So why the 2.5 stars? Honestly, I can’t come up with anything I genuinely liked about the story. But it wasn’t the worst book I’ve ever read, and I’m feeling generous. 😇

Plot: 4/5 • Smut: 3/5 —————> She’s on the run from her abusive ex and owes an MC 5k. Needless to say her life is in the gutter right now. When she’s confronted for the money she owes she runs into her old foster brother. Aka someone she’s not on the best of terms with. He takes over her and she has to work off the money she owes. With sex. We have a virgin FMC who’s working off her 5k debt. We all knew things weren’t going to just stay black and white. Feelings start to become involved. And in the end we have my least favorite trope of them all… surprise pregnancy. We do get a HEA.
I liked that Penny has some inner strength left after being abused for so long, and even through the rough and tumbles of Ryder. The smut was good.

I also liked that there weren’t too many flash backs. We don’t really get much of the story behind Tommy/Ryder, but honestly, fine by me.

We get:

• Virgin FMC

• MMC in a MC

• Second chance

• He falls first

• Enemies to lovers

• Surprise pregnancy (😡)

I don't even know where to start. When I picked this book to read, I expected an enemies to lovers, I didn't expect her owing debt and he just tells her to open her legs and shit. This was like something I remember reading on Wattpad when I was younger.

Every action Ryder made cringed me to the core.

"Giving up, for now, I push her off my face and flip her around, so I can fuck her doggy."

HER DOGGY? SHE DOESN'T HAVE A DOG. (im not slow ik what he means but wtf bro) there has been times in which he throws her in a crowd to get raped. This book had potential but what the actual fuck- omg read this if you want to have book ptsd.

For a sneak peak, you can view the quotes I have for this book. (traumatizing fr)

Because I'm nice, this is a 1.5 stars. I want to puke for forcing myself to read this but it's okay.

The Hate Vow by C. Hallman is a dark enemies-to-lovers romance story. There is angst, abusive, drama and some violence. In this story we meet Penny. As a teen, she did well in school, had good parents and good grades but when she met the wrong guy, that's when her life changed. She put up with all the torment and abuse he threw her way until she had enough escaped. Unknowingly, one of her so called friends used her as collateral and when it came time to pay up, she had no choice but to do what was told.
Ryder has had a hard life. Living a life a crime, he made his way up to president of his MC group. When he finds out that the one and Penny owes him a debt, the need for revenge hits him hard. And he intends on taking his revenge out on her body. After all, it is partly her fault that his life ended up tne way it did. He plans to use her and forget she ever existed. But after he has his fun and learns about her life, he quickly changes his tune. Saying that she will work off her debt by being his live-in maid, he houses and feeds her, but is the debt and his need for revenge the only reason?
This was a great story. I loved how even though they both endured so much, they were able to open themselves up for the other.

Wow, C hallman doesn't fail to capture my attention. I loved this book so much since reading it in the Sinful Secrets anthology. I kept wanting to know more about Ryder and Penny.
At first I thought Penny was a cruel girl for what she did to Ryder while they were young but knowing what she went through I felt for her. Ryder on the other hand just wanted to have a family but due to Penny he lost it and became vengeful.
I love how C. Hallman adds some violence in her novels become I love the thrill of danger. I hope you will all love this book as I have and hopefully *fingers crossed* we will get a book about Maddox and the rest of the MC.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

WOW… so now it’s the new trend to write repulsive, despicable and revolting MMCs? Wtf!

This was beyond ‘dark enemies to lovers’. There’s no way people actually romanticise this shit. Worst book I have ever read and that’s saying a lot coming from me. I swear to god, I’ve never been more angry reading and hating a book so much at the same time.
