The City of Gods - A City at War The ruinous Civil War of the Gods is nearing its end; the rebels are cornered and desperate.
Aila, the demigod daughter of the executed rebel Prince Isra, faces a choice – fight to the end, or come to terms with the tyrannical rule of the victorious Gods.
Imprisoned within the palace of her father, she has one chance to make a difference – one final chance to find peace, or to let the City she loves fall into the hands of her uncle, the cruel and ruthless Prince Michael.
Caught in the middle are the City’s long-suffering mortals – the hundreds of thousands that labour so that the Gods can live in luxury.
With their fate in Aila’s hands, can she summon the courage to do the right thing?

About Me
I love deserts, which is too bad as I live in Scotland, but the mountains, glens and lochs more than make up for it. My other love is Greek Tragedy, especially Euripides, and I also read history, science, fantasy, and pretty much anything about the Beatles…

This is an origins story and one which I really needed to read as it fills in some very important facts to the main series starting off with the weaning of Alia from her opium addiction whilst she was imprisoned by the God Queen and King after witnessing her own father's death. Isra had been a rebel and fought for the mortal's cause same as Princess Yendra. Yendra was fighting for her people, the Evaders who lived in the circuit but who were being starved to death by Prince Michael the son of the monarchs and a tyrant who saw mortals as just mindless slaves, there to serve their betters. Aila escapes the palace and travels to Yendra's circuit but only to persuade her to give up the cause before more demi-gods were killed. She ends up embroiled in the terrible battle and on the rebels side. This book also shows us why Yendra was loved as much as she was and how she ended up were she did as well as giving us a totally different version of Kano to the one we saw in the main series. I think this is a book which must be read by all those who enjoy the series about the Magelands.
I’m almost positive that I’ve read this before but can’t find anything to support that belief. This is when Aila first escapes from her opioid stupor to try to convince her Aunt Yendra to cease her attempts to protect the mortals living in the Circuit. When this doesn’t succeed Aila more or less becomes part of the resistance by default as she has nowhere else to go.
Supposedly the demigods want to strengthen their line by breeding yet don’t seem to have any compunction in killing off those who don’t fall into line. The parents of the demigods show obvious favoritism when dealing with their progeny. Aila is once again made a prisoner when Yendra is defeated and is destined to bear the children of the detestable Marcus.
