Hiram Woolley was with his son Michael, in the cab of their Double A truck, driving through the sage, scrub and rocks of Spring Canyon above Helper, Utah. The sunshine of a May afternoon had done a fair job turning the dirt road into dust.
This story takes place within the world of novels The Cunning Man and February’s The Jupiter Knife by D.J. Butler, creator of the Witchy War saga, and Aaron Michael Ritchey.
Aaron Michael Ritchey was born with Colorado thunderstorms in his soul. He's sought shelter as a world traveler, an endurance athlete, a story addict, and even gave serious thought to becoming a Roman Catholic priest. After too brief a time in Paris, he moved back to the American West and lives semi-comfortably with three forces of nature: a little, blonde hurricane, an artistic tornado, and a beautiful, beautiful blizzard.
Interesting world-building with a good skeptic/believer dynamic between the father and adopted son. While the descriptions are evocative, the prose didn’t quite flow smoothly, and I’m a little unbalanced by the protagonist attributing every event that goes his way as a gift from god rather than the frequent fruits of his labours.
